Book Description
The Nonprofit Handbook, Second Edition, Fund Raising 1998 Supplement can serve both as a supplement to the main volume edition or on its own as a resource on current developments in the fund raising industry. Topics covered include a not-for-profit ethics program, cause related marketing and sponsorship, and fund raising software, as well as an appendix updating material to the main volume. This title is free with the purchase of the main volume.
Customer Reviews:
It isn't just a book; it's a fund raising curriculum . . . ........1998-01-19
One of the most experienced and respected fund-raising professionals in the United States, James M. Greenfield, ACFRE, FAHP, has assembled the best wisdom 42 other highly-regarded and experienced fund-raising leaders, into a comprehensive handbook covering nearly every conceivable aspect of fund development. The Nonprofit Handbook: Fund Raising isn't just a book; it's a fund raising curriculum between two covers. Indeed, I am unaware of any other volume which attempts -- and successfully so, I might add -- to map the entire scope of fund raising so thoroughly. A warning, though: It would be a monumental task to read this book in its entirety. Rather, its best use is as a fund raising reference - a one-volume library for articles covering just about any topic fund development professionals are likely to encounter. For example, folks who are involved with an annual fund will want to focus on Part III, entitled "Annual Giving Program." The section contains articles on "Overview of Annual Giving," "Direct Mail," "Benefit Event Fundamentals," "Benefit Event Enhancements," Telemarketing," and "Volunteer-Led Solicitations." To take another example, folks looking for major donors will turn to Part IV, entitled "Major Giving Programs," containing thorough treatments on these topics: "Overview of Major Giving," "The Corporate Support Marketplace," "The Grant-Seeking Process," "Major Gifts from Individuals," "Capital Fund Appeals," "Planned giving: Gift Vehicles," and "Planned Giving: Management and Marketing." One drawback is its price. At $210, it's one of the pricier books in fund raising. However, this is a two-volume set. I've described only the "Fund Raising" volume; there is also Management volume, covering -- again, in encyclopedic fashion -- all aspects of nonprofit management. We'll be reviewing that in the next installment of "We Review." Despite the price of the set, I cannot imagine any well-equipped fund development department not having these volumes available to the staff.

Book Description
Save BIG BUCK$ on consulting engineering fees! Why pay expensive consulting engineers every time you're faced with changes to residential and light construction plans? Now you can proceed on your own with complete confidence thanks to Basic Engineering Calculations for Contractors, by August DOmel--your one-stop, jargon-free guide to the properties, loads, stresses and tolerances of wood, steel and concrete members. The author's done all the heavy number-crunching for you, so you get instant, ready-to-apply data on: support reactions; bending and shear stresses; deflections; dead and live loads; snow and winds loads; wooden joists, headers and trusses; steel beams and columns; concrete slabs, footings and walls; and much more.
Customer Reviews:
well written and clear information.......2005-09-20
I found the information helpful, easy to use and direct to the point.
Some help, but contains errors, and may be misleading.......2003-05-03
As an engineer it made me nervous to read this book. The author did an ok job at simplifying many of the engineering concepts contained within, but I came across a number of major errors in formulas and definitions. Keep in mind that unless you are a licensed engineer or architect (at least in NY state) it is illegal to design or modify any of the structural members discussed within the book. I believe the author is misleading in implying that complex engineering work can be simplified to the point of bypassing a licensed professional. To me it just seems dangerous. If you are a contractor looking for a better idea behind the engineering of residential construction, the book generally meets that need.

Contractor's Guide to the Building Code: Based on the 1997 Uniform Building Code (5th ed).......2005-08-31
Thank you Jack. I got what I want.
Missing key information.......2003-12-06
There is a very important section of the UBC titled Conventional Light Frame construction (ch23 Div IV), which allows a designer/builder to build a house without requiring expensive engineering. This book virtually ignores it, which I feel does a great disservice to readers. Many (most?) magazine house plans do not include braced wall requirments, which are part of the above building code. It would be nice if this book addressed this important section of the UBC. Also, it seems every time I have a building question and go to this book as a reference, it leaves me dissapointed. For example, requirements regarding grading and setbacks from slopes, etc., which can be pretty cryptic in the UBC. OK for general reading, but not a great reference book.
It works for me.......2002-12-06
I needed a book which would give me some ideas for designing my house, this one did it. It doesn't have descriptions for every nail, every stud, but it did what I needed in a clear, concise manner.
Insight into the building code bureaucracy.......1999-12-12
Well, that should've been the name of the book. If you're looking for advice on working within the building code bureaucracy, this book might be for you. If you're looking for advice on building according to code, you need to look elsewhere. It does give insight into the mind of the inspector, admitting permits are for taxing and taking glee on setting the attorney general on a citizen who was trying to prevent the inspector from trespassing on his land. I bought the book hoping to get a concise guide to the code, but was mistaken.

Book Description
Participation in fisheries governance is an issue that has become fashionable in recent years, partly because of the patent failure of most non-participatory modes of fisheries management across the world, and partly because participation has become de rigueur in many other sectors, most notably the development sector.
This edited book is, therefore, a timely contribution to a lively contemporary debate. The chapters focus on three main themes: first, what value does stakeholder participation bring to fisheries governance? Its advocates claim that participation improves the quality of decision-making; resolves conflicts; and increases compliance with regulations. On the other hand, critics argue that participation is often unnecessary, ineffective, costly, time-consuming, and cosmetic. The second theme is the relationship between the participatory mode and the current switch from single species-based fisheries management to the ecosystem-based approach (EBA). In what way does widening the extent of public participation contribute to the EBA? Third is the vexed question of the relationship between fishers’ experiential knowledge and fisheries science: how far does fishers’ knowledge improve our understanding of the marine environment?
The central message of the book is that while stakeholder participation is beneficial, it carries with it responsibilities as well as rights: all stakeholders have a public duty to act as stewards for the marine environment.

Description:
Fisheries have long been managed through public-private partnerships based on collaboration between government and user-groups. The alleged benefits of involving the latter-as representatives of civil society-are a management system that is more flexible and legitimate than one based exclusively on top-down command and control. A question that is rarely addressed is whether civil society is up to the task. Are voluntary associations fit-'technically' and 'democratically'-to take on management responsibilities? Assessing the pros and cons of involving civil society in fisheries governance requires a closer look at the role of user-groups in public policy-making. This paper attempts to do that by examining certain aspects of the Norwegian system of fisheries management, focusing-in particular-on the role of its most prominent civil society player: the Norwegian Fishers' Association. The association has long been a privileged partner, virtually monopolizing the attention and goodwill of government. How has this been justified, and does it still serve its original purpose? As the fishery has changed, so-we contend-has the association: from something akin to a public interest group into what is essentially a 'trade union' pursuing the economic interests of its most powerful members. How and why did this change-in goals and priorities-come about, and is it tenable that this particular partnership continues? What lessons, if any, can be drawn from the Norwegian case about the pros and cons of user involvement, interactive governance and the role of civil society in fisheries management?

Description:
During the last decade, devolution of responsibilities of fisheries management has increasingly become an issue in the political debate. The CEC and national governments have expressed an interest in sharing responsibilities for fisheries management with stakeholders. This article investigates the dynamics and constraints of the devolution process in general and in relation to Danish demersal fisheries by answering the following questions: What are the important factors to consider with respect to sharing responsibilities in fisheries management; how can this delegation and/or devolution of responsibilities be institutionalised? And what kind of decisions should be delegated to stakeholders and to whom?

Book Description
Diatomic molecules are important to the physical sciences because they are the basic building blocks of large molecules. Many of the principles which underly our understanding of chemical bonds in molecules were first developed by studying diatomic systems. Starting from fundamental principles, this book develops a theory that analyzes the energy levels of diatomic molecules and summarizes the many experimental methods used to study the spectra of these molecules in the gaseous state.
Download Description
Written to be the definitive text on the rotational spectroscopy of diatomic molecules, this book develops the theory behind the energy levels of diatomic molecules and then summarises the many experimental methods used to study their spectra in the gaseous state. After a general introduction, the methods used to separate nuclear and electronic motions are described. Brown and Carrington then show how the fundamental Dirac and Breit equations may be developed to provide comprehensive descriptions of the kinetic and potential energy terms which govern the behaviour of the electrons. One chapter is devoted solely to angular momentum theory and another describes the development of the so-called effective Hamiltonians used to analyse and understand the experimental spectra of diatomic molecules. The remainder of the book concentrates on experimental methods. This book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers interested in the rotational spectroscopy of diatomic molecules.

Customer Reviews:
Strange book.........2007-06-23
I started reading this book, and I am puzzled by its style! While the information seems to rely on a huge compilation of data from many books, there is a lot of rather crude QM stuff (ordinary QM and AMO). Its style is rather pretentious, hard to follow, jumping from one thing to another..

Book Description
Volume II/24 presents the spectroscopic data on diamagnetic and paramagnetic molecules as well as on molecular ions and radicals up to date considering the publications up to and partly including 1997. The spectroscopic information collected in this volume has been obtained principally from gas phase microwave measurements.
Volume II/24 is a supplement to volumes II/4, II/6, II/14, and II/19 and is planned to appear in five subvolumes, the last of which will contain the substance index taking into account all molecules worked at since 1967 in the volumes mentioned and will provide cross references to and between all tables of these. The present subvolume
II/24B contains an introduction and tables of rotational and centrifugal distortion constants of asymmetric-top molecules, i.e. data which roughly specifies the frequencies of the rotational transitions of these types of rotors.
