Ric Edelman believes you can't create a truly effective personal finance plan until you really know what you want out of life. In Discover the Wealth Within You he shows how to develop a realistic series of individualized goals for your future, and then how to construct an investment program to help you realize them. Edelman, author of New York Times bestsellers Ordinary People, Extraordinary Wealth and The Truth About Money, draws on these books to explain why we're ultimately more successful with our financial agenda when we focus on it as a means to an array of unambiguous objectives (such as "see an event in person during the next Winter Olympics" or "have plastic surgery in three years") rather than vague long-range aspirations (like saving "for retirement" or to "buy a house"). In the first section he unveils a step-by-step process for determining the precise objectives that motivate us; in the second he points us toward a mutual-fund-based savings plan that should be easier to capitalize consistently because we know where it's taking us and when we'll get there. Incorporating a profusion of appropriate cartoon strips, inspirational testimonials, persuasive statistics, and an unusual assembly of footnotes that are as amusing as they are informative, Edelman offers a clear and innovative course of action that could turn even procrastinating wannabes into enthusiastic money managers. --Howard Rothman

3 out of 5 stars How To Be Healthy, Wealthy, & Wise the Fun Way........2005-06-22

This is an interactive how-to book fulled with relevant comic strips and cartoons -- a very graphic publication. In it, he promotes reverse psychology to get what you want; my sister mastered in this type of child rearing which I could never learn.

This book is about setting goals, not just realistic, but real. Make this goal as though you were living it today. Visualize. By doing this, your enthusiasm will rise, your focus will intensify, and you'll be able to stick to your goal. Nothing is impossible. Sure enough, one day, you will make it happen, because you'll have made it important to you, vitally important.

After you set your goal, you have to plan how to achieve it. Too many retired people are so focused on maintaining a living that they sometimes forget to have a life, and become 'bored to tears!'

Lincoln said: "And in the end it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years." He gives several "what-if" and "if-only" scenarios.

Whatever you choose, however you go about achieving your goals, the main end result is to be happy along the way and when you reach your destination. We may not get what we want when we want it. I was told by a stranger some years ago that God does not work on our time, but He has a plan for each of us in His own time. I'd really love to go to South America to see their pyramids. John Greenleaf Whittier said, "For all sad words of tongue and pen, the saddest are those "It might have been."

He tells us that "Bill Gates is rich because he own a whole lot of Microsoft, the software company he started. He's the richest person in America, perhaps the world." Part II shows you how to have your cake and eat it, too: take your choice, pound cake is fixed income investments and stocks; marble cake is filled with both. Cupcakes are fads. Avoid them.

Learn to be yielding, and that way, you'll exercise your strength. It sounds contradictory, but it's not. Many ancient cultures consider water the strongest substance on earth because it acts with gentle persistence rather than brute strength, and in that way manages to shape its circumstances without
destroying what lies in its path. Maybe there's a lesson you could learn from that and apply to your own life.

2 out of 5 stars Not so good.......2005-06-19

I picked this book up at a dollar store so I guess I got my moneys worth . this book gives very little info compared to it's size. It does have some useful info on the morning star ratings and Bata.
For me it seems to give a lot of info what people do wrong but not How to do it right.

3 out of 5 stars Two unrelated themes, one decent book.......2004-12-19

This is a decent book, if (a)you want a very interesting guide to goal setting, and (b) you want to learn about mutual funds, and the ideas involved in modern portfolio allocation. So in one way, it is two books in one. The two however, are NOT related in a real way. While some of the advertising and blurbs for this book make it sould like the investing section will in some way help you to more rapidly reach the goals you set in the front "goal setting" section, this is almost certainly not going to happen. The mutual fund, and the "modern portfolio allocation" are not radical way to improve returns. If you follow the advice of this book, you will (a) do about as well as most any disciplined investor, and (b) protect yourself from possibility of massive loss in the type of market we have just been through. You will probably not be touring the world on a sailboat, operating a first class horse farm, or living in luxury in Europe, which are type of goals Mr. Edelman encourages the reader to engage in at the front of the book. So my only complaint would be that the book promises much more than it returns. But if you read each half of the book, as clearly NOT related to the other half, it is a useful tool, in particular the thoughts on portfolio allocation, and the links near the end. It is clearly written and easy to understand in most ways.

3 out of 5 stars An easy (and funny?) book on personal finance.......2004-03-16

This is a book for personal finance. But it only concentrate on 2 main topics - setting up goals and picking up mutual funds. On goal setting, it is one of a few books that give such an emphasis (and proportion) on this topic. It is important, critical, but somewhat over-long. (Imagine listing several pages of places/events that help you to pick up for your goal?) The good side is that the importance of goal setting is applicable is many other areas - not just personal finance. The second half of the book is about mutual funds, and there are some very interesting 'facts' - e.g. Morning Star ratings, index fund, tax benefit, etc. Since the author is quite humorous, it is a very easy read for the 300+ pages. One thing I only like is that some of the footnotes are totally pointless - they are there just for the sake of being funny?? Maybe Ric can consider 2 labelling of footnotes - one is useful and the other is only joke.

5 out of 5 stars Truth, honesty and Integrity.......2004-01-18

These are the three values that come to mind when I think of Ric Edelman. There are many financial books out there and advisors eager to take your money, but how many can you trust?

Edelman was named the #1 financial advisor by Research magazine for his focus on the individual client. He has earned three Awards of Excellence by Royal Alliance Associates, was named Ace Advisor of the Year by Ticker Magazine, named Financial Planner of the Year three times by World Invest Magazine and named one of the D.C. areas top financial professionals by Washingtonian magazine.

His firm Edelman Financial Services Inc., has won more than 50 professional, business, community service and philantropic awards, was named three times by Inc. magazine as the largest growing privately owned financial company in the nation. awards and has been ranked twice by Bloomberg Wealth Manager as one of the largest independent financial planning and investment management firms in the nation (his firm ranks 6th in the nation). The firm has created and implemented financial plans for more than 6,500 clients, and today Ric and his team manage $2 billion for people across the country.

His classic book The Truth About Money was named book of the year by Small Press magazine and his five books have collectively sold over a million copies.

Ric has also earned several financial designations, CFS, RFC, CMFC, CRC, and QFC.

Finally the man has three important qualifications: Truth, Honesty and Integrity.

Ric Edelman is not a "me-too" financial author. He stands alone. In the opinion of many, he is the best.

Expert authors summarize the principles set forth in case law and explore the philosophical foundations of First Amendment law. Current theories are examined to explain the rationale behind constitutional protection for free expression and freedom of religion. The debate between separationists and religious accommodationists in establishment clause jurisprudence is featured in this text as well.

"Congress shall make no law...," but on this subject at least, the Supreme Court gets to do pretty much whatever it wants. First Amendment doctrine is notoriously serpentine and challenging. While this nutshell doesn't change that, it does explain the law in a crisp, well-organized fashion, with a good balance of case summary and explanation/analysis. The authors are concise without dumbing down the law. While there are big treatises out there for practitioners or for in-depth reference use (e.g., Smolla and Nimmer), there aren't very many First Amendment study aids out there. I think this one is the best.

Expert narrative reflects the substantial attention the Supreme Court has given to religious-freedom issues under the First Amendment over the last 15 years. Text covers issues such as separation of church and state, equality of treatment, and religious liberty. Provides historical perspective and explains how the Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause interact. State constitutions and legislative provisions on religious freedom are discussed as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great insight on issues of law and religion.......2006-11-03

This book is an excellent summary of the law in this area. The writing is so clear and interesting. Even though I am not a lawyer, I was able to understand it. What a great way to add depth and context to the issues of law and religion that are so often discussed superficially on the news.

2 out of 5 stars The State and Religion in a Nutshell (Nutshell Series).......2004-11-25

As a guide on religion and religious freedoms, this book was disappointing in that it did not address neo-pagan religious groups and religious viewpoints in America... especially one of the fastest growing religions in the States: Wicca. In federal court in 1985, Wicca became recognized as an "official" religion in the U.S. (See Detmer v. Landon) And in light of the religious freedoms that have been trampled on over the years for non-mainstream religions in schools, prisons, employment, etc., it would have been great to see some of this addressed in this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good reference tool.......2004-02-14

While a little simplistic and over-generalized at times, like all the books I've used in the Nutshell series, this is a good, solid reference tool. As an attorney and moderator of a discussion board on coastal access issues that emphasizes California law, I appreciate the comparisons of different approaches taken in different states. It's not really a book to read from start to finish, but as a quick reference to illustrate issues and point to the leading cases it's been a welcome help.

        Book Description

In the 6th century, a prophet, Mohammed, was born in the Arabian city of Mecca. Today, more than a billion people from the Ivory Coast to Indonesia continue to read and practice the lessons revealed to Mohammed by Allah (God) fourteen hundred years ago, yet the religion is still misunderstood by many people in the West.

Islam in a Nutshell, offers readers a 32-page overview of the fundamentals of the religion in simple, short chapters beginning with the life of Mohammed and ending with the contemporary politics of the veil. Also included: the "true" definition of the word jihad; descriptions of Heaven and Hell as laid out in Islam's holy books; women and Islam; the causes of the Shi'a/Sunni split and the spread of Islam from the 7th century until the Safavids declared Persia (Iran) a Shi'ite state in the 16th century.

With the inclusion of a family tree of Mohammed's ancestors and offspring, a full-page map of Islamic countries and a glossary, the book is also a practical resource for any consumer looking for a quick reference guide.

As a lifelong, card-carrying member of Islam Ignoramus Society, I finally compelled myself to become a proud ex-member in light of all that's happened in recent years. Since there is no such book as Islam For Dummies (Salman Rushdie being disinclined to pen such a book), I opted for Amanda Roraback's excellent "nutshell" version. Islam in a Nutshell deftly (and objectively) whisks us on a journey to the 6th Century A.D. and beyond, carefully educating the reader along the way. Incredibly, I didn't understand how Sunni and Shiite Muslims differed-and, more importantly, why-but this little book (not too little to skimp on some crucial maps of the era) told me clearly and concisely. I highly recommend Islam in a Nutshell, so read it before bed one night and awake the next day a little more enlightened.

                Book Description

Las Vegas is surrounded by some of the most spectacular geology in the American Southwest. Looking outward from the glittering city center, one can see evidence of nearly two billion years of the Earth's history expressed in the rugged mountains that border Las Vegas Valley. Thick sections of limestone, sandstone, and shale, similar to rocks of the Grand Canyon, can be found. There are remnants of volcanoes and the volcanic rocks fill basins formed by faulting in the last few million years. Erosion of these geologic features by wind and water in this desert climate has resulted in the amazing landforms that can be seen today.

Each of the five geologic tours in this newly revised and expanded guidebook takes the traveler to a different area of special geologic interest within a short driving distance of Las Vegas. Travelers can visit one of the three national recreation areas, two Nevada state parks, and even a national wildlife refuge protecting Desert Bighorn Sheep. These tours provide options for side trips, hiking, camping, wildlife viewing, and even fishing and boating at Lake Mead.

5 out of 5 stars Las Vegas Geology Rocks!!.......2007-02-14

This is an excellent publication for both the layman and experienced geologist to use while exploring the wonderful geology around southern Nevada! They used enough detail for everyone to learn something and the diagrams and images are fantastic. I highly recommend this book for anyone, especially those who are going on roadtrips through this area!

                  Book Description

The relationship between liquids and gases engaged the attention of a number of distinguished scientists in the mid 19th Century. In a definitive paper published in 1869, Thomas Andrews described experiments he performed on carbon dioxide and from which he concluded that a critical temperature exists below which liquids and gases are distinct phases of matter, but above which they merge into a single fluid phase. During the years which followed, other natural phenomena were discovered to which the same critical point description can be applied - such as ferromagnetism and solutions. This book provides an historical account of theoretical explanations of critical phenomena which ultimately led to a major triumph of statistical mechanics in the 20th Century - with the award of the Nobel Prize for Physics

Yesterday Will Make You Cry, the story of a young man's brutal sojourn in prison, was first published in 1952 as Cast the First Stone. Author Chester Himes had intended to write a book based on his own prison experiences, but when publisher after publisher turned it down, Himes rewrote the text. He turned his third-person narrative into a first-person narrative, eliminated flashbacks, and toned down the sometimes poetic language. The revision became, so the new editors tell us, "a hard-boiled prison novel." Finally restored in the form of the original novel, Yesterday Will Make You Cry is the heartfelt book Himes would have had us read: it is occasionally brutal, always uncompromising, and sometimes harrowingly moving.

                  Book Description

A classic restored--the complete and unexpurgated text of the first, most powerful, and most autobiographical novel of this great African-American writer. In 1937 Chester Himes, newly released from a seven-year stretch in the Ohio State Penitentiary for grand larceny, finished his first novel, Yesterday Will Make You Cry. By turns brutal and lyrical and never less than totally honest, it tells the autobiographical story of young Jimmy Monroe's passage through the prison system, which tests the limits of his sanity, his capacity for suffering, and his definition of love. Stunningly candid about racism, homosexuality, and prison corruption, the book would take sixteen years and four subsequent revisions before being published in much altered form as Cast the First Stone in 1952. Even bowdlerized, it was recognized as a sardonic masterpiece of debasement and transfiguration. This edition presents for the first time the book precisely as Himes intended it to be read, with its raw honesty and startling compassion entirely intact. It now stands definitively as one of the great novels of prison life and one of Himes's most enduring literary achievements.

                  5 out of 5 stars I Cry For Today!!.......2007-05-29

This book was awesome, I cry not only for yesterday, but today!! You have to read it from the beginning and keep reminding yourself what the title says, it goes beyond the hip hop, urban street, hard core books it tells a beautiful story,it's life education in itself.U have to understand, this book goes beyond racism, and prison life,it tells a story which goes deep in everyone heart and soul, because everyone have or will have some thoughts & feelings of this story. I cried almost all the way thru the book, this character went thru alot. Sometimes, u never know what u will do thru life struggles, so were no better than the next person, but thru it all soone or later we go thru struggles and we all cry for yesterday and today.

                  2 out of 5 stars Tedious.......2006-05-29

Himes is an excellent writer, but Yesterday was tedious. Pales in comparison to some of his other 'unfooled around with' works. Still a Himes fan, but Yesterday is not worth the eye strain.

Yesterday Will Make You Cry: Why?
                  ***

"It was the first night..., convict no. 57232 had been in the dormitory." This starts the whole thing. The author's purpose is clear, to put you in the zone of this book, but does it? Chester Himes' Yesterday Will Make You Cry is a novel that brings to life the way of life in jail.
Himes presents Jimmy Monroe, the protagonist into play with the realization of life in jail. He is hit with many obstacles, but doesn't know what to do. Himes present this story in a weird way.
The setting is very realistic. The protagonist has a problem with coming to the realization of it, "Top range,...a very cold block with small, grimy, and very cold cells."
Jimmy Monroe is a very complex character. One may not understand fully what's going on in Himes' mind when he created this character, but one must also keep in mind the title when you read the book at all times!

Himes present many flashbacks through Monroe, but fails to foreshadow at first. There is conflict between the whole story and the readers mind as well. One must not forget who the protagonist is because you will get lost.

Himes dos use some "big words" but, most of them tie in with the story. Some parts of this novel are simple, like every-day life talking, but the narration parts are more complex. "Before the fire, despite the fact of it's submergence beneath the level, endless, monotonous, unvarying, un-movingly eternal stretch," is an example of how Himes' really wants you to think.

This novel is an alright novel. One must keep in mind the "deeper meaning" or the "big picture" of some things. Read "between the lines." If the reader doesn't pay attention in the beginning, they will get lost later on in the book. Read the novel a couple of times to get the full meaning. One will find something new every time.

                  3 out of 5 stars yes, but...........2001-05-24

You know, I really wanted to like this book.... but, and perhaps this is beyond the pale given the novel's publishing history, it seemed to need an editor more than anything else, not for any of its themes, or subject matter, but for the prose itself: it's true that the language is often very evocative (and those moments are very good indeed--for example, when he describes the loneliness inherent in prison life), but more often it is clunky... not at all bad, but somewhat disappointing given the relative hype....
