5 out of 5 stars Latest Trends in Branch and Operations Facility Planning.......2004-01-13

I have just completed the third edition of this popular book for the credit union industry. It is again being published by the Credit Union Executive Society and will be available in the second quarter of 2004. It contains eight new chapters dealing with advanced branch business modeling and prototype development; strategic branch planning; strategic operations occupancy planning; branding, marketing and merchandising; selecting the most beneficial merger partner as the acquired and acquiring credit union and management team; property development for use and profit, creating effective measurement systems; technology integration in facilities; call center design; hiring the best consultants; developing the most effective construction strategy; ergonomics and high performance branch and operations environments, what is working and what is not in the industry, and much more. There are over 250 drawings, illustrations, charts, check lists and case studies. All of the previous chapters have been enhanced. This is a how-to book with step-by-step instruction on how to create strong retail branching and operations occupancy strategies and then design, construct and operate succesful facilities that can be measured in terms of member and staff satisfaction; growth in deposits, loans, target PFI status and profitability; brand equity; ROI and savings in construction and long term operations.

        Book Description

The second edition of Law and Justice, while retaining the overall structure and themes of the first edition, includes substantial changes in the material and its organization.

The first third of the materials, concerning the "Rule of Law" virtues, has been reorganized and enriched with additional material addressing statutory interpretation and the doctrine of precedent. The materials on procedural justice have been trimmed and moved forward in the text in order to make connections with the substance-neutral claims of legal process. The materials on substantive justice have been reorganized and supplemented in order to make more vivid the tension between liberalism and its critics. Nance concludes the text by turning to the question of the duty of obedience to law, and the topic is given greater immediacy, especially for law students, with the addition of material concerning the challenging issue of the lawyer's duties in advising clients who are contemplating acts that would violate the law.

The second edition retains the pedagogy of the first: significant readings from important scholars are coupled with a relatively small number (twenty-three) or minimally edited principal cases. The emphasis is on sustained arguments rather than "snippets" of insight.

        A teacher's manual is available.

        1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.......2002-06-18

This book is very poorly written and seemingly not edited at all. I tried keeping up with the mistakes and quickly realized that there were too many to count. Also, the organization is terrible. The book does provide some interesting insights, but not nearly [the money] worth. Don't buy this book for... unless you have the misfortune to be enrolled in Nance's Justice class at the Chicago-Kent school of law. If that's the case, don't even buy the book at all. Grades are a [junk] shoot and you will quickly discover that reading the assignments is more of a waste of time than the class is a waste of money.

3 out of 5 stars Theory, theory, theory.......2001-02-06

This book explains the theory behind justice and contemporary law through an exploration of historic cases and academic essays. If one is looking for a glimpse into what goes through a judge's mind while an opinion is being written, or a map to substantive and procedural justice, this is the book to read. It is organized as a case text for a law student and at times can get overwhelmingly dense, but is very comprehensive.

                          Book Description

Of all the different areas in computational chemistry, density functional theory (DFT) enjoys the most rapid development. Even at the level of the local density approximation (LDA), which is computationally less demanding, DFT can usually provide better answers than Hartree-Fock formalism for large systems such as clusters and solids. For atoms and molecules, the results from DFT often rival those obtained by ab initio quantum chemistry, partly because larger basis sets can be used. Such encouraging results have in turn stimulated workers to further investigate the formal theory as well as the computational methodology of DFT.

This volume contains ten contributions from active workers in DFT, covering topics from basic principles to methodology to applications. In the Foreword, Prof Walter Kohn gives his perspective on the recent advances in DFT. Because DFT is being developed in so many different directions, no single volume can provide a complete review of DFT. However, this volume will help both beginners and experimentalists to read the growing DFT literature more easily.

                              Book Description

The Pushcart Prize XXVII continues as a testament to the flourishing of American literature in our small presses. Edited with the assistance of over 200 distinguished contributing editors—including Philip Levine, Rick Bass, Rosellen Brown, Joyce Carol Oates, Billy Collins, and Stephen Dunn—this edition includes over sixty stories, essays, and poems from scores of little magazines and small presses, both print and online.

As the consolidation of commercial publishers continues, the small presses capture and encourage what is truly lasting and important in our literary culture. For new writers, the small presses are where they will almost always get their start. The Pushcart Prize serves as their inspiration and source book, with listings of hundreds of presses. Among writers discovered in the Pushcart editions are John Irving, Mary Gordon, Rick Moody, and many more.

                              4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2004-03-10

I've bought this book in the past, the 2002 edition, and used it mainly as a reference guide to small presses. I expected to do the same with the 2004 version - to see what type of material the presses are publishing, publishing trends in small presses, etc., but I found myself unexpectedly enjoying the book.

There is some excellent poetry in here, interesting fiction, and a memoir that I continue to think about.

I wish, in the contents, the original publication as well as the author and title, were listed. It's a huge book to skim through to search for which story originated from which publication - though many might find that information unnecessary.

                              5 out of 5 stars a terrific ensemble!.......2004-01-27

This book was one of the best Xmas gifts I've ever received. It's loaded with good work, fiction, poetry, memiors, and essays. Evan S. Connell's story alone is worth the price for any one thinking of buying this fine book. I have always liked good writing (the recovering English major that I am), but have felt depressed about the current state of letters. Oprah's book club wasn't cutting it for me (but I loved The Corrections). This antology rescues my faith. Bravo, Mr. Henderson! I'm a Pushcart fan for life.

I read the review in the Cleveland Plain Dealer and immediately bought a copy of the book, gave my copy to a friend and have just purchased a second copy. What a terrific selection of stories! The Cleveland Plain Dealer review by Karen Sandstrom was right on target. This book is packed with great literature!

In 1889, when this book was first published, the depredations of the Indians upon the Texas settlements were still of recent memory, and the accounts still possess freshness and occasional ironic humor, despite the passage of over a century.

See other reviews for comments about bias, humor, and nature of the stories. Unfortunately, the organization seems haphazard being neither by county nor chronological. As a result, the stories start to drone on and on. Encyclopedic rather than readable. Get Jenkins for a more readable book of this type.

Will give you an idea of what living in Texas was like when hostilities between natives and settlers were common. As I read this book I kept imagining a Texas with no cars, no hospitals, no air conditioning and the very real threat of getting scalped on any given day. The book made me appreciate more what early Texans must have seen in their state and understand better why they came and why they stayed.

When whites arrived on this continent they found it populated by countless tribes of residents. During the centuries that followed those tribes mostly vanished. The white conquest of North America is a story of migration and extermination. It is the microcosm of human history everywhere. The Wilbarger book is a series of accounts of the turmoil on the front lines of human encounter. The Wilbarger book is a study of understanding of the minds of men involved in conquest and an illustration of the desparate responses of the (savage)peoples being overrun and exterminated.

5 out of 5 stars Good book about early Texas.......2002-04-06

I'm a Texas History teacher, and I use the book quite a bit in class. It is broken up into short, true stories of encounters with Indians in the days of early anglo settlement. Some of the accounts are funny, some harrowingly tense. Others so heartbreaking that I've never been able to shake the violent imagery. As other reviewers have stated, it reflects the opinions of the time, so if you're into PC BS you won't like it. Books like this shouldn't be forgotten.

                                              Book Description

From the cubit used by Noah to build the ark to the angstrom in spectroscopy, units of measure have been integral to science and engineering. Throughout history, countless systems of measurement have been devised and then discarded as more precise and more logical systems have come along. While most of the world has adopted the metric system, the United States -- with the curious exception of soda bottles -- adheres to the imperial system, even though the country has officially been a metric nation since 1893, when Thomas Corwin Mendenhall declared metric prototypes the country's "fundamental standards of length and mass." The convenience of the base-ten metric system is undeniable, and so are the costs associated with not converting to metric. Yet, Americans still cling to inches, quarts, and ounces. Clearly, there is more to measurement than logic.

In Measure for Measure, Alex Hebra offers a delightfully engaging and instructive history of measurement systems from ancient times to the present, exploring how and why such units as the stadium, the span, and the parsec first came about. Tracing civilization's various efforts to calculate distance, volume, mass, energy, and time, he explains how units of measurement are applied in such fields as mechanical engineering, physics, optics, and astronomy. In particular, Hebra focuses on the development of the metric system, arguing that even the United States will eventually join the worldwide metric community. Deeply informed and imaginatively told, Measure for Measure chronicles humanity's imperfect search for the perfect system with which to quantify reality.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting material, but dreadful organization.......2004-01-26

This book covers a lot of information which could be done quite interestingly. However, its organization leaves so much to be desired that I was very disappointed in the book. It covers things like dimensional analysis and the effect of choice of units on physical formulas, as well as the history of units (as promised in the title), but it jumps from topic to topic in a chaotic manner, with topics that are closely related scattered among different chapters and things that ought to be separated lumped together in one chapter.

Another reviewer talked of the errors in some of the equations in this book. They are there, but I don't think that this is the biggest problem with this book. Rather, it is the totally incomprehensible lack of any sensible organization.

3 out of 5 stars Very Promising But a Little Disappointing.......2003-12-18

I just love books like this. They guide the reader through various physical concepts using simple calculations, often to arrive at interesting conclusions. The author of this book has attempted to do this in an accessible way while mixing in historical snippets to add to ones reading pleasure. Unfortunately, I must agree with the prior reviewer who commented on the fact that the book was very poorly edited. There are, indeed, too many errors and typos, especially in the equations, and many explanations lack the clarity and completeness that one would expect in such a book - things that may discourage neophytes and induce feelings of impatience and mistrust in the minds of the initiated. But because of the interesting topics discussed, a thorough, proper and careful revision of this book, including careful re-thinking and re-writing of some of the discussions would easily make it five-star material. Such a revised version would be an asset to popular science literature.

5 out of 5 stars Different systems are juxtaposed and examined.......2003-12-13

Measure For Measure is an informed and scholarly history of imperial, metric and other units of measurements blends science, engineering, and human discovery in a historical survey which examines standards of length and mass. Different systems are juxtaposed and examined during the course of Hebra's coverage, providing an excellent, engaging survey of past, present and possible future measurement systems and how they came to be.

5 out of 5 stars Great little science book.......2003-08-29

I was not the best student in high school or college, but now that I'm a "mature grownup" I enjoy reading science journals and books - as long as they're not too dry or massive. Who has time to plow through a 600 page tome?

I enjoyed reading Measure for Measure. Mr. Hebra uses lively text, formulas and plenty of clear drawings to help explain the subject matter. In every chapter I found fascinating details. Like how close we came to adopting a metric clock (10 hours per day, 100 minutes per hour) or that the great Thomas Edison electrocuted stray dogs to prove how dangerous AC electricity was, compared to DC. Yikes!

As with all disputes, the opposing sides of the metric vs. "standard" debate can sometimes be very polarizing and shrill. Mr. Hebra does not try to sway us one way or another but instead explains the logic and history behind our systems of measurement. He sometimes strays off the subject, but that's part of this book's charm. Hebra's anecdotes are amusing and help put a human face on the evolution of science and measuring systems.

If you want to learn a little more about and how mass, size, heat and time are all related and measured I strongly recommend picking up a copy of Measure for Measure.

5 out of 5 stars The whole nine yards (8.23 meters).......2003-08-27

The great science myth is that all scientists use metric units. In this marvelous little book, which is thoroughly enjoyable to read, Hebra shows that they don't. Astronomers have parsecs, particle physicists use barns, and engineers and mathematicians often don't use units at all. To prove his point, Hebra shows us how to instruct space aliens to build a hydroelectric dam, without knowing what fluids they may use, how big their planet may be, how strong its gravitational force may be, etc.

Along the way, there are some fascinating anecdotes about hogsheads and jereboams, the thirteen-month year proposed by the League of Nations, and the size of Noah's ark.

I now have a far greater appreciation of the scientists and engineers who struggled so hard, and for so long, to come up with a standard system of units. I wish I could have read this book when I was taking physics in college. It's entertaining and breathes life into the science of measurement.
