2 out of 5 stars Trite business jargon.......2007-10-01

This book is full of the trite business jargon you get from fad business books. Worn-out cliches, pithy anecdotes, cutesy anagrams...it's got them all. Siess' intended audience is the lone librarian in a small library, and there is certainly information here that can help. However, to get to it you have to dig through a great deal of business-guru garbage. She meant well, it just comes across silly.

Book Description

More than 500,000 female millionaires already live in the United States. Many accumulated their wealth with ideas and hard work, not by marrying a millionaire. "The Millionairess Across the Street" inspires women to think more powerfully about money and success and to be motivated by confidence, pride, and a belief in their own ability to manage it. Flores and Sander don't use fear of ending up alone or dependent as a motivator. Women will learn to enjoy the process of accumulating wealth and achieving success without the guilt and fear they traditionally experience.

3 out of 5 stars Needed More Depth & Real Millionairess Interviews!.......2004-07-13

What I Liked: First, let me say that I love this book conceptually - the basic ideas here needed to be said! Women can get rich in their own business, and marrying a millionaire is not the only way to become a millionaires (certainly not the most satisfying either.) I believe that most women in America would gain a lot even from the most basic lessons in the 23 chapters of this book. Thinking BIG, taking yourself seriously, stop squandering your money, leaving the past behind, build a high profile for success and not giving it all away for free (something women often do with their time and money for loved ones) are principles every woman should take to heart, as they have the hardest time with them. All too often our "feminine ideals" hold us back from being successful in business. While it's okay for a man to reach for the biggest piece of the pie, a woman will make sure everyone else eats before she does - even if she cooked the meal! I believe that as women it's time to start treating ourselves like what we are truly worth, instead of the last in line. "Caviar not cornflakes!" is a motto I learned from this book that I'll always carry with me.

What Needed Improvement: I believe this book was written too quickly in response to the huge success of "The Millionaire Next Door" and the authors did not do nearly enough research on female, self-made millionaires. Instead of writing in depth about the great business women and leaders of history and present day, they often chose the well-known stories of successful men who rose to the top - in a book about female millionaires! Did we really need to hear the story of Starbucks CEO, Bill Gates or the author of the "Chicken Soup For The Soul" books one more time? The authors make it even worse by justifying/apologizing for their use of male examples wherever they are used. "You need all the positive role models you can get ... regardless of gender..." they say, with the unspoken "because we couldn't find enough female ones!" at the end.

Surely the personal stories of amazing business women such as Oprah, Madonna, Elizabeth II and Martha Steward would have been more appropriate - but the authors glaze over them, only going into as much detail as a single paragraph will allow. I wanted to know these women's secrets, their strategies... for instance Oprahs few lines in the book could be summed up as "Oprah grew up very poor, and overcame a teenage pregnancy to become one of the richest women in America. So you see even successful women overcome great obstacles." But how exactly did Oprah become one of the richest women in America? What did she do in her rise to the top? Did the authors interview her? Did they share any of her personal insights? No, they just repeated what everyone already knows about her life. Disappointing. Elizabeth II was not even mentioned in the book, though there was a chapter on women and money in history. Most of the examples given in the chapter were depressing! Now there is a great book out on the market called "Elizabeth CEO" detailing her incredible leadership and business skills. That book was written by a man ... and here two women claiming to be experts on millionairesses apparently have not even heard of her.

I really feel that enough work did not go into the writing of this book... whatever successful women the authors personally knew about were used as examples over and over (Lillian Vernon and Mary Kay) and yet so many obvious and great examples of women's skill with money were absent. In fact, any detailed examples and strategies straight from real female millionaires were absent. The authors claimed that they interviewed hundreds of female millionaires before they wrote this book, and asked them among other things "What do you think holds most women back from success?" Yet they never said what they heard from their interviews. There were no excerpts from interviews what-so-ever which I would have found very interesting. The authors also justify / apologize in the first chapter for not being millionaires themselves but writing this book, which kills their credibility immediately.

Next time a book about millionaire women is written, I would like to see the following stories included. Ani DiFranco went from being a waitress to learning guitar because she liked to write her own songs... she then created her own record label, and with a unique brand of feminist folk-punk songs sold millions of albums. She refused to sign on with any male-owned big record labels despite the money they threw at her when she was successful. To this day she owns and operates her label, making $10 per cd sold whereas other artists make only $1. This alone landed her on the cover of Forbes magazine. Madonna worked at Dunkin' Donuts in New York with dreams of stardom. With no apologizes and no regrets she climbed her way to the top, becoming the most successful female artist ever, having sold over 150 million records. She is well known for her business and marketing savvy, and runs an empire of music production through her own label Maverick Records. Alexandra Nechita, a child protégé painter, sold $1,000,000 worth of art before her 16th birthday. Elizabeth II inherited a weak and distressed England, which by the end of her 44 year reign had become the most powerful and rich country in the world. She refused to take a husband because she would not share her power with a man, and became known as "the virgin queen." Look into any area of life... whether it be historic leaders, entertainment, big business, publishing, medicine, science, education, etc and you will find successful female millionaires.

I highly recommend this book for all women interested in creating success in all aspects of their lives.

5 out of 5 stars The Millionairess Across the Street.......2000-03-27

You've got to read this book if you are a woman! Jennifer and Bettina teach women that we should start looking at our earnings like a man does his. How come we give our money away? Don't negotiate the deal for bigger bucks? After this book, I took their advice to heart and managed to secure $4,000 more dollars in a work deal. I've made more in a few months than I made last year because the book taught me how to look at success and work and money. I've also learned to ask for what I want! This book changed my life. It's also a quick, easy and inspirational read. Keep your copy in your briefcase. That's where I keep mine.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just For Women.......2000-01-30

I found this book to be very real. Nitty -Gritty advice and common sense approach. Though I've read enough books and didn't expect much new, i found this to be one of the best books I've found and have recommended it to many friends - both men and women. For anyone of either gender who is 'coming from behind', who hasn't been graced with the unquestioned belief in their rightful place among the population of the successful, this book is an eyeopener.

4 out of 5 stars Think differently -- see what happens!.......1999-12-23

Ms. Flores teaches women (and men!) to think outside their usual conventions and to change their feelings about money. She gives strong examples for those of us who learn visually. Additionally, the thinking and writing exercises are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars A fundamental books for Atmospheric Physics.......2007-07-05

The atmospheric science is a young science and it is difficult to find rigorous, not only phenomenological, and precise books on it. I find this book a very precise, with a good mathematical description of phenomena, and self consistent books, very useful for physics of the atmosphere. Probably, in my opinion, some initial notion of general fluid mechanics is needed but this book is fundamental for people that want to construct a solid and mathematic bases in atmospheric physics.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best ..........2005-11-21

Dutton's great book on atmospheric motion is one of the best science texts ever written. It uniquely combines the difficult
upper levels of fluid mechanics (to Navier-Stokes) with rule-of-thumb computational guidelines. And best of all it is a tale lovingly told. The man genuinely loves his subject, and just as
importantly, he loves his students. He never talks down, but he
explains with exquisite text and scads of diagrams. As one simple example, he shows how to graphically compute the material derivative of a flow, and you see how all the terms of the
algebraic computation correspond to elements of the graphic description. Page after page is a true delight.

Yes the real mathematics is all there. Dutton aims the book at upper under-grad and graduate students in meteorlogy or physics.
I used the book for self-study and for the sheer joy of seeing
          real physics presented so clearly.

If you just want a review of calculus in a delightful setting or
perhaps a grand overview of the interplay of several disciplines
(dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, potential theory, etc.) then you will not be dissapointed with this magnificent
          book.

A true classic at the level of Feynman.

This book critically examines the concept and practice of verification in economics. It argues that economists have relied too confidently on applying methods drawn from the pure sciences and mathematics to their own studies. The authors call for greater study of what is involved in verification.

Fascinating chronicle of the bands of plundering sea rovers who roamed the Caribbean and coastlines of Central America in the 17th century. Detailed accounts of shrewd and fearless men, excellent navigators, and blood-thirsty adventurers who frequently committed inhuman acts of cruelty — among them the infamous Henry Morgan.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Earn Your Sea Legs.......2007-06-25

Originally published in Dutch, this version is translated by Alexis Brown. The author, Alexander O. Exquemelin (spelling varies widely between versions and sources), provides a first hand account of the environs, history and, to him, current accounts of several of the well known buccaneer captains.

Much of the book is in travel log format and describes the various towns, flora and fauna of the Caribbean, especially locales like Tortuga, Panama and Hispaniola. The author describes various animals and often their suitability as food, such as the differing qualities of the various types of turtles and even manatees. His descriptions of the trees and animals are fairly detailed and the modern reader can often make the connection with current names.

The other focus of the book is a set of narratives of two of the better known buccaneers: Francis L'Olonnais and Henry Morgan. The author provides accounts and opinions of the exploits of these two men and their crews, including the less than admirable usage of torture.

This is required reading for any with more than just a passing interest in pirates (I am somewhat ashamed that it has taken me nearly 8 years to get around to this cornerstone for a true understanding of buccaneers). While the biographical content is limited to just two buccaneers, the basic understanding of the buccaneer lifestyle and environment provide a firm basis for understanding much of what transpired during the 17th century in the Caribbean as well as what was to follow in the Golden Age of Piracy.

An exciting first hand account of pirate life in the Caribbean. I found the book to be both enlightening and entertaining to read. It was packed full of exciting, interesting tales about how pirate life was really lived.

5 out of 5 stars Better than any "pirates of the Carrabean" movie.......2007-04-11

Want to read about the original Captain Jack? This is the book for you. It's the basis for most of the rest of the pirate books we have. An insider's perspective. Exquemelin was a pirate for a while and both was on some of these adventures and listened in the bars to the stories about the rest of them.

A great read for any Pirate fan! Yar!

4 out of 5 stars The real pirates of the Caribbean........2006-04-15

The Buccaneers of America is a first-hand account of the life and exploits of real-life pirates in the seventeenth century Caribbean region. There are apparently rather few such eyewitness publications, and this one must surely rank highly among them. Alexander Exquemelin was a buccaneer himself, and relates those stories that he actually witnessed or those that he heard. His own participation is always left vague, and while he witnesses plenty he claims few actions for his own.

As a primary source, Buccaneers presents a lively narrative that any reader should be able to enjoy. Exquemelin first briefly discusses his voyage to the West Indies and then tells something about the islands in the region. While he does then continue with the stories of the pirates (a term he uses at the beginning of the text), he slips easily and effortlessly between tales of battle and daring, and descriptions of life among the other inhabitants of the region. This interplay makes the work come alive as we get a fuller picture of things. Thus, while telling the story of Henry Morgan's depredations on the Spanish towns, he stops to describe the catching and preparation of manatees, or turtles, so some other such thing.

What can the reader expect to learn about the Buccaneers? Quite a lot, though I found myself questioning some of it, and have to wonder how much Exquemelin embellished the stories for the sake of publication. The Buccaneers are invariably presented as warriors of almost superhuman endurance and martial skill, and also as the most sadistic and depraved of human creatures. Time and time again he presents descriptions of the tortures and murders that captive Spaniards were put through. A more extreme example of exaggeration comes when he writes about how four Indians ran two hundred feet into the trees carrying a one ton canoe with them, finally dropping it to make their escape. While such things may find favor with gullible readers of the late seventeenth century, today we can dismiss them as ridiculous.

I suspect that much of it is genuine, or at least close to genuine. It certainly takes no great leap of knowledge to find stories of man's inhumanity to man, and men can become good warriors when their lifestyle calls for it. Certainly while the Buccaneers themselves come across as far from sympathetic, this portrayal certainly makes their lives and exploits come alive.

                Book Description

Reissued for the 500th Anniversary of Columbus's Voyage to the Americas, Carl Sauer's Classic Account of the Land, Nature, and People Columbus Encountered
The history of Columbus's four voyages has been told many times. But Sauer's book is still the only work to provide not only a narrative of the voyages and of the colonizing ventures that followed them, but also an exploration of their impact on the peoples, the flora, and the fauna of the Americas.
For Sauer, Columbus was simply "a Genoese of humble birth and small schooling," obstinate and increasingly paranoid. His obsession with gold and the rights he had secured brought the first Spanish venture overseas to the edge of failure. His successors were more competent administrators but continued the quest for riches, destroying the native ecology and the lifestyle of the indigenous peoples. Sauer attempts to show that native Americans had a balanced and highly productive livelihood that gave them abundance, leisure, and satisfaction. This book offers a unique view of the "cultural landscape" Columbus encountered and how it was transformed by the Europeans, establishing a pattern of conquest and settlement that was repeated all over Spanish America.

This is the definitive English language compilation of the most significant spanish documents relating the first years of the conquest of the Caribbean and Tierra Firme. A tragic account given to us first hand by the chroniclers and put into context by Carl Sauer, one of the experts on the topic. An anthological book.

5 out of 5 stars The original book on pirates.......2005-10-03

This is probably the original source for information of pirates. It contains such a vast compendium of information that it is difficult to select anyone in particular. The cruel reality of pirates is sometimes terrifying; however, in the context of their times this may not have been so shocking. Each reader will take away what they find most interesting. I find that the interaction between the pirates and the indigenous people of these island most intriguing.

This is a book about buccaneering written by one of the participants. Esquemeling was a Dutch physian who went to the Caribbean during the heyday of the Spanish Main. He was the surgeon to Henry Morgan's expedition against Panama City.

Like many educated men of his time, he tried to be a scientific observer of the New World. As a result, you'll see descriptions of flora and fauna of the Americas mixed in with anecdotes about the famous and near famous of the period. The phraseology can be stilted in places, but that is how people spoke at the time.

Is it worth reading? I certainly think so! It's valuable in the same way that Bernal Diaz's account of the conquest of Mexico is valuable, it gives a flavor for how the participants saw themselves. So, if you want real, this is it.

In response to the previous review:

This book was originally written in Dutch and first published in Amsterdam in 1678 - most texts refer to him as a French surgeon, as he originally came in contact with the buccaneers as a result of his 1666 journey to tortuga with the French West India Company. His name is spelled Alexander Exquemelin....

The events of the book cross reference fairly well with Spanish historical documents - most errors are in place names and dates, according to David Cordingly (british historian, and expert on all things pirate).

5 out of 5 stars The Bucaniers of America.......2000-06-15

No one knows for sure the spelling of the man's name of his nationality, but in 1684 Alexander Esquemeling published in London a powerful, some say mendacious, personal reminiscence of Henry Morgan and other pirates. Histerical at times, this work brilliantly recreates Morgan's most memorable, indeed incredible adventures. A must read for anyone wishing to capture an authentic view of the Carribean during the period of pirates and the battles of Spanish main.

                                Book Description

During the late 1970s and 1980s, "cancer" underwent a remarkable transformation. In one short decade, what had long been a set of heterogeneous diseases marked by uncontrolled cell growth became a disease of our genes. How this happened and what it means is the story Joan Fujimura tells in a rare inside look at the way science works and knowledge is created. A dramatic study of a new species of scientific revolution, this book combines a detailed ethnography of scientific thought, an in-depth account of science practiced and produced, a history of one branch of science as it entered the limelight, and a view of the impact of new genetic technologies on science and society.

The scientific enterprise that Fujimura unfolds for us is proto-oncogene cancer research--the study of those segments of DNA now thought to make normal cells cancerous. Within this framework, she describes the processes of knowledge construction as a social enterprise, an endless series of negotiations in which theories, material technologies, and practices are co-constructed, incorporated, and refashioned. Along the way, Fujimura addresses long-standing questions in the history and philosophy of science, culture theory, and sociology of science: How do scientists create "good" problems, experiments, and solutions? What are the cultural, institutional, and material technologies that have to be in place for new truths and new practices to succeed?

Portraying the development of knowledge as a multidimensional process conducted through multiple cultures, institutions, actors, objects, and practices, this book disrupts divisions among sociology, history, anthropology, and the philosophy of science, technology, and medicine.

This study of deforestation in Malaysia's three regions examines the different factors that shape them, the institutions and policies that determine forestry development, the ecological impact of deforestation, and sustainability. Much Malaysian deforestation reflects agricultural expansion or rural development and poverty alleviation projects, while logging became more significant after independence. Sabah and Sarawak have relied increasingly on the exploitation of their timber resources, and private greed and corruption at state level have overridden federal policies of sustainable management. The authors take a hard look at the economic and political forces in the international tropical timber trade. An ecologically rapacious emphasis on growth, coupled with politically powerful distribution coalitions, give little chance for policy reforms and no hope of radical change. The only pressure that has the slightest effect, it seems, is international criticism.
