Book Description

Our world is composed of thousands, perhaps millions, of cultures-ranging from the cultures of nations and ethnic groups to the cultures of corporations, communities, and individual families. From global to local, our cultures determine what we believe and how we act in relation to each other.

The Touchstones were born in cultures of the workplace, but they work equally well in all interpersonal settings. They are ground rules for working relationships, meaning both ground rules for relationships in the workplace, and ground rules for relationships that work.

Rather than presenting totally new concepts or ephemeral technique, the book takes these eight widely-valued principles and presents them in a new way. The notions embodied in the Touchstones are familiar to everyone-everyone pays lip service to them, and almost everyone takes them for granted. The apparent simplicity of these principles lulls us into believing they are easier to apply than they really are. As a group, the Eight Ground Rules certainly look familiar enough: Be in the Here & Now Be Open Be Honest Listen Be Constructive Be Non-Defensive Speak for Yourself Participate ...but in practice, these deceptively simple notions are a different story. These Ground Rules are simple in name but often complex and tricky in application. They may seem simple because everyone has heard of them, but seething beneath the familiar names of the Ground Rules are all the emotions, conflicts, confrontations, and epiphanies that are the life of relationships in any organization.

One of the major success variables in business is the quality of our relationships. We've heard a lot about fixing the processes of organizations transforming, re-engineering, down-sizing, right-sizing-but while we've been attending to the processes, we've neglected what absolutely must work well if an organization is to succeed: the relationships between its people. When relationships work, the processes stand a better chance of working.

This book is about eight ground rules-the Touchstones-that make the relationships within an organization work.

Most of us travel through life carrying many or all of these basic notions like a pouch of uncut diamonds-we understand that they are diamonds, that they are bright and valuable, but unless we are able to cut the facets, to mount them, to share them, they are only so much carbon.

We live in a time of unprecedented organizational changes where overnight a corporation can adopt an entirely different hierarchy, morph into a flatter structure, tap unexplored energy by empowering more workers, and germinate a new culture based on semi-autonomous teams. In all this explosive change, we've lost sight of a fundamental fact: it is now, as it has been always, people working together that accomplish the most. Mission statements proclaim that "people are our most valuable asset," yet many leaders don't know the best ways to help their people work together. Thisbook provides executives and the people who work for them the tools theyneed to forge substantial relationships and dynamic collaborations.

    Book Description

Interpretations of wild nature and wilderness are particularly diverse in the American mind, given our history, our collective economic success, and our diverse social and cultural mix. Although the meanings we attribute to nature reflect our different views of the role humans should play in the natural world, there remains a divide between how we embrace protected landscapes and how we consider natural landscapes, or nature itself. Thomas Vale explores this phenomenon in The American Wilderness: Reflections on Nature Protection in the United States. In his examination of protected landscapes at all scales, from the wooded corners of a city park and the local reserve of wetland, to the vast wilderness of the Everglades and Okeefenokee, to Central Park and Yosemite, Vale argues that nature protection is an act of place-creation, an act that necessarily links humans to nature and depends on a diverse array of human interactions.

rare combination of celebration and criticism, Vale's argument is twofold: landscapes of protected nature in the United States represent a legitimate natural resource, and contrary to expressions in some recent literature, such landscapes bond people to nature. Providing extensive historical and modern data about the national park, national wilderness, and national wildlife refuge systems, Vale argues for the validity of landscape protection and the benefits of achieving both strict preserves and mixed-commodity places in a democratic society. His goal is to unite the often disparate threads of nature protection into a fabric that will enhance an appreciation for the extent and richness of nature protection sentiment and action in the United States.

This is volume 1 of two-volume book that presents an excellent, comprehensive exposition of the multi-faceted subjects of modern condensed matter physics, unified within an original and coherent conceptual framework. Traditional subjects such as band theory and lattice dynamics are tightly organized in this framework, while many new developments emerge spontaneously from it. In this volume, · Basic concepts are emphasized; usually they are intuitively introduced, then more precisely formulated, and compared with correlated concepts. · A plethora of new topics, such as quasicrystals, photonic crystals, GMR, TMR, CMR, high Tc superconductors, Bose–Einstein condensation, etc., are presented with sharp physical insights. · Bond and band approaches are discussed in parallel, breaking the barrier between physics and chemistry. · A highly accessible chapter is included on correlated electronic states — rarely found in an introductory text. · Introductory chapters on tunneling, mesoscopic phenomena, and quantum-confined nanostructures constitute a sound foundation for nanoscience and nanotechnology. · The text is profusely illustrated with about 500 figures.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction text to condensed matter physics.......2007-02-13

This book was written by two respected Chinese physicists. It tries to give a coherent account to the whole subject of condensed matter physics. To do this, it builds up an unified framework based upon concepts such as elementary excitations, topological defects, broken symmetry, rigidity, emergent phenomena, collective phenomena, coherence, localization, etc. In the first part, authors discuss thoroughly the structure of matter in condensed phase, which is not readily available in other texts on condensed matter physics. In the second part, authors focus on wave behavior in condensed matter systems with different structures. Things like electrons, phonons, photons in periodic or quasiperiodic systems are discussed. This part has also covered topics like surface and impurity effects, transport, tunneling, and Anderson localization. The third part introduce bond and band approaches to electronic structures of materials. Two other chapters in this part are given to correlated electron systems and nanostructures like quantum well/wire/dots, respectively. The fourth part is the last part of this volume, which covers phase transition and various ordered phases. Landau theory is introduced and applied to liquid crystals and other systems. Magnetism, superconductivity, and superfluidity are discussed. Finally, a chapter on broken ergodicity is included, which is an important concept to the phase transitions that are not directly related to broken symmetry.

Overall, this book is a great introduction to condensed matter physics. It can also serves as a reference for research physicists. Many discussions in the book are illuminating. The book is well organized. The framework taken in the book is very helpful for graduate students to gain a deeper and wider understanding of condensed matter physics as a whole. In one word, this book is highly recommended for those who want to study condensed matter physics.

                        Book Description

A wise and richly symphonic first novel, Long for This World is a thoroughly contemporary family drama that hinges on a riveting medical dilemma. Dr. Henry Moss is a dedicated geneticist who stumbles upon a possible cure for a disease that causes rapid aging and early death in children. Although his discovery may hold the key to eternal youth, exploiting it is an ethical minefield. Henry must make a painful choice: he can save the life of a critically ill boy he has grown to love at the cost of his career or he can sell his findings for a fortune to match the wealth of his dot-com-rich Seattle neighbors. Henry turns to his family for support, and in their intimately detailed lives unfolds a story of unforgettable characters grappling with their own demons.

3 out of 5 stars Medical Ethics Dilemma, Well Diluted.......2006-12-03

A doctor discovers a possible cure for a rare disease, then administers it to a favorite patient without waiting for approval. He feels justified because the patient is dying anyway, but also figures he'll get rich if the cure works. So begins the basic story in this book. While not especially original, it might be crafted into a solid short novel of 150 to 200 pages. Trouble is, this book goes on about 3 times as long. The many digressions on the experiences of the doctor's relatives, neighbors, etc. add little or nothing to the central story. Few of the digressions are very interesting in and of themselves. I can see this as a good book for people in the medical and related fields, but even they might want to skip many sections.

5 out of 5 stars An Unexpected Pleasure.......2004-12-12

I came across this book through one of the Seattle area purchase-circles. Its a complex story in a simple setting - the story of a family each with their own wants and needs, and a larger story of life through the father's patients, or research subjects.

4 out of 5 stars Small Story, Big Book.......2004-10-15

Although the plot of this book can be summarized in a sentence, during the 400+ pages of it you learn nearly encyclopedic knowledge about each of the characters -- their motivations, their histories, their hopes and desires. You get to spend at least a chapter inside each character's head, and the author does a great job of bringing the characters to life.

The Seattle setting is completely accurate, including lots of little out-of-the-way spots only a native knows. Apparently the author's father works at the University of Washington hospital, which explains it.

I was a little disappointed by the way the plot was SO realistic -- no dramatic denouement, no resolution to several characters' turmoils, no good guys or bad guys... this was refreshing in a way but, novelistically, curiously unsatisfying. Well worth a read anyway.

4 out of 5 stars An intriguing look at the American family..........2004-08-04

I was a bit disappointed in the book because it was billed as 'medical-ethical thriller', but was much more a quiet look at an American family. That is not a problem of course, just what I expected. It is a book of quiet grace. The characters are all fleshed out and almost like people we know. They have real concerns, real ideas, real problems. The story has it's ups and downs, as in real life...it does not have huge, shattering plots twists--again, that is just right for the novel. If you are looking for a sweet, sad, and ultimately hopeful potrait of America at the turn of the century, this your book.

4 out of 5 stars Sloppy research, but a great book!.......2004-03-04

What a wonderful book! The characters are very well done. I chose this book because I suffer from a chronic disease (and hope for a cure), but then I enjoyed Ilse's immigrant points of view, having met my US husband in Europe myself (I'm from Germany).

However, I would have expected better research of Ilse's background: Ilse's mother gives her marks when Ilse leaves for Paris - but the currency of Austria used to be the Schilling, not the Deutsche Mark (now it's the Euro). When Ilse speaks German, it sounds like straight out of a dictionary - no grammar knowledge whatsoever. And so on and on...

Byers knows how to write and does it very well, so maybe he just needs an assistant for the research part. Despite its shortcomings, I loved the book and will recommend it.

I recently decided to return to college after being away for nearly 20 years raising a family. This text was one of my first courses and I found it easy to understand, well laid-out, and concise. Generally speaking, it dealt with issues thoroughly, though I would have liked to have seen more coverage on gender issues through the ages. Early civilization was primarily patriarchal, yet women played an intricate part in the development of society through the ages. I think any student interested in learning about the origins of civilization would benefit greatly by using this text. The chapters covered topics well, but weren't excessively lengthy. The companion document book worked well with this text, preventing any confusion as to the time table involved. This book should be included as a reference or required reading for any history major. Mr. Stearns did a wonderful job covering a large span of time in simple terms and in few pages. Having a wonderful professor, along with easy-to-understand text, influenced me to add history as one of my majors--along with my major of English. I only hope my second semester in history goes as well as my first!

Living and working among the TzÂ'utujil Maya people of Santiago Atitlán in highland Guatemala for some fifteen years, Vincent Stanzione has observed, photographed, and participated in their ritual and ceremonial life, which he describes with unique authority in this account of the continuities in Mayan culture from pre-Columbian times to the present.

“This book represents both a confirmation and an innovation in the scholarship and field work about the religious imagination and rites of passage of Maya peoples. I know of no book that is as able to a) link the pre-Hispanic, colonial and contemporary religious practices of these peoples into a coherent narrative, b) combine anthropological/religious studies theory with linguistics and ongoing field work as creatively and c) illuminate the debate between models of Â`syncretismÂ' and Â`transculturationÂ' about a contemporary ritual cycle as StanzioneÂ's beautifully illustrated work.”—David Carrasco, Harvard University

The first North American edition of StanzioneÂ's longterm observations of traditional Maya ceremonies in Guatemala.

5 out of 5 stars Maya Peoples Live Through Myth and Ritual.......2004-05-14

Stanzione presents an insightful, respectful, dynamic account of his experiences among these Maya people by combining approaches from religious studies and anthropology. The book is also graced with beautiful and revealing black and white photographs and drawings of the everyday ritual practices in and around Santiago Atitlan. Especially important is Stanzione's reporting of contemporary versions of Maya mythology about the creation of the world, the lives of plants, the sexual relations of deities-all in relation to Christian practices and sacred stories that are important to the Maya. Readers interested in religious change, syncretism and transculturation as well as the ways the Maya suffer and resist state violence and the attacks of missionaries will find this book a very valuable resource.

                                Book Description

"A textbook on the current theology and science dialogue that is directly addressed to teachers and students, and as such, manages to be remarkably accessible; it also carefully addresses all the contemporary issues in the field in such a way that it moves the theology and science debate to the cutting edge of the current conversation , and in so doing, brings readers to the newest frontier of one of the most exciting issues of our time." -- J. Wentzel van Huyssteen, Princeton Theological Seminary

The volume is divided into five "books," making it possible to read the volume as a whole or to use its individual sections (books) or the individual chapters within the sections. Book One introduces the science and religion debate. Book Two examines how three types of science -- physics, biology, and psychology - interact with one another. Book Three explores theological resources for making a model of God, humanity and the cosmos and how these can applied to a description of divine action in the light of contemporary science. Book Four looks at science's place in society, while Book Five speculates on how the debate between science and religion is likely to develop.

Includes figures, exercises, a note for teachers, references, bibliography, and index.

Christopher Southgate is Lecturer and Director of Modular Studies at the University of Exeter in England.

Then this is definitely the book for you! I already loved the first edition, but the second, revised and expanded edition, will be a classic...

Summarizing this book is simply impossible, because this is not a monograph on a particular subject, but a text book aiming at giving a broad overview of the field and providing the necessary instruments for further study. The book deals not only with matters of method (e.g. modelf of relating science and religion) and history (e.g. historical examples of tensions between science and theology), but also extensively with theory. The new physics (Newtonian physics, cosmology, anthropic principles), evolutionary biology (Darwinism, human evolution, reductionism), psychology, ecology, science and education, religious diversity, tecnology, and biotechnology are dealt with in detail. Also divine action is given a fairly thorough treatment.

All in all, this book covers most of the contemporary field of science and theology. Having studied this book, you should be able to find your way in science & theology. Truly excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Innovative, competent, interesting, unusual.......1999-09-30

Having had the privilege of studying the course behind this publication first-hand at Exeter, I would recommend the book to any student who seeks a thorough and well-rounded survey of the contemporary debate between science and religion.

Or is it a debate? The authors posit several models of dialogue between these two - usually separated - spheres, and this forms a core feature of this textbook: the opportunity to explore ways in which the two complement and enrich one another.

Therefore as well as being competently yet simply introduced to complex scientific questions (the Big Bang, the origin of life, quantum theory - to name a few), the author allows scope for the reader to see - for himself, and through the eyes of great thinkers, more and less famous - how it is possible to construct a working hypothesis of the inter-relation between God, humanity and the cosmos.

In the later chapters, which are a particularly unique and enjoyable section, we are introduced to the scientifically-influenced theologies of Jay McDaniel's "pelican heaven", Sallie McFague's "embodied God" and Ruth Page's "Web of Life". The reader can enjoy these models, whilst exercising a critical eye, sensitive to the scientific perceptions and phenomena so effectively outlined towards the beginning of the book.

On top of this, other views are outlined, including a section on Islamic theology and creation.

This is a great book for students and all those interested in understanding more of the world about them. It is refreshing to find a theology book which is so world-affirming, without resorting to religious dogmatism: not just a dry textbook, but a competent handbook AND a "choose you own adventure!"

                                    Book Description

There is a rapidly growing interest in, and demand for non-timber forest products (NTFPs); they provide critical resources across the globe, fulfilling nutritional, medicinal, financial and cultural needs. However, they have been largely overlooked in mainstream conservation and forestry politics. "Tapping the Green Market" explains the use and importance of certification and eco-labelling for guaranteeing best management practices of non-timber forest products in the field.

Using extensive case studies and global profiles of non-timber forest products, this volume not only furthers our comprehension of certification processes but also broadens our understanding of non-timber forest product management, harvesting and marketing. It will prove invaluable for forest managers, policy makers and conservation organizations as well as for academics in these areas.
