I found this book in the library and it is one of the best I've ever seen on the subject of power and influence in corporate situations. An amazing story, written as fiction, yet rings very true to situations people encounter every day.

The Fundamental Contract Text.......2007-06-20

This "student" text, bought for my daughter who is entering law school in the fall, is the reference any lawyer (or interested non-lawyer) should have at their fingertips.

Not very clear or concise.......2007-06-02

As the title indicates, this text is not very clear on concise. The authors introduce you too a great deal of information on contract law, which on the surface appears to be very helpful, until of course, you begin to read the text. Once you begin to read it, you will become confused as the shear amount of material thrown at you is difficult to understand and is written in incredibly long, run on sentences.

Recomend that you get an Emanual outline instead

Good but not needed for contracts class.......2006-12-21

I bought this book because I needed a better understanding of contracts during my 1L year. This book expanded upon the contracts outline I already had, put out by the same authors, C&P. This horn book was helpful for understanding a few areas more in depth, especially for another class where I needed to dig deeper than what was taught in contracts. On one hand, this book was readily available in the school library (probably yours too) and therefore was probably not a necessary purchase. On the other hand, it will probably be a more useful book for me in and out of practice, since lawyers and non-lawyers alike use contracts throughout life.

Could have been better, I think.......2006-10-14

Well, the fact that I'm writing a review about this book, while it's sitting open on my desk next to my computer, open and not being read, might be some evidence of how I'm enjoying this book. This book just goes on and on in complex an unclear language about a subject which shouldn't be so difficult. This book is not clear or easy to understand at all. Every sentence is awkward and followed by a footnote, and the masses of footnotes together take up half of EACH page (!), making this work look like a research project for a PhD publication. I have the casebook in this series, and sometimes it seems reading the cases alone will bring more clarity. And it turns to be true! This book might be good if you're advanced-contracts and want to know every little detail, or as an advanced reference later on, to look something up like in an encyclopedia. Some concepts, which should be pretty clear just get too in-depth coverage in this book. It's too complex for a first-year student. Sometimes it starts describing the different views out there, and then there's a jumble in your head as to what the law really is. I wish the author used his own knowledge and fluid language more than footnoted ideas from other authors.

Best used as a doorstop........2006-01-14

This book tells you nothing that the U.C.C., Restatement 2nd, and a basic cases and examples book (Farnsworth, for instance) doesn't already tell you. This hornbook, however, is much denser and dryer than these other texts. Surely there must be better study texts out there than this for the first-year Contracts student.

To give you a taste of this literary castor oil, the first chapter asks the question, "What is a contract?" Then it proceeds for paragraphs upon dense paragraphs about what some obscure academic once said a contract is. Then C&P say that they don't like that explanation (without really explaining why very well). This is repeated over and over again. Then they conclude by saying, Golly gee, we'll be darned, but we really don't know what one of them contract thingies is, but we'll talk about them in the most boring way possible for the next several hundred pages using as many words as we possibly can in order to justify our royalties.

Later, the book covers history of contracts, and the concepts of debt, assumpsit, and covenant, but in a very dense and dry manner lacking in well-communicated insight (again, Farnsworth's casebook, for example, is much more direct and enlightening). This is par for the course with C&P.

If you really want to understand Contract law better, just review various sections of the Restatement 2nd of Contracts, and the comments thereto. That is a shorter and more direct read, and depending upon your law school, you probably have to know what the Restatement 2nd says anyway. May as well get it straight from the horse's mouth instead of reading some law geeks overpostulate on it.

Good Book for first year law students.......2000-06-07

The first year of law school was very difficult. It was refreshing to use this casebook that so clearly outlined the law of contracts.

The best part about the book is the problems after every section of cases. These problems allowed me to realize whether I understood that type of contract.

The worse part about the book is that the hornbook is a newer edition. So, although Calamari does an excellent job laying out the law, the labels (that tell you which sections in the hornbook to read) do not always correspond.

I don't know how I could have finished law school without the study aids! This is a fairly good one. If you prefer an electronic copy, I'd suggest the e-Legalines for Contracts (which has an updated version of this study aid).

if your using the farnsworth contracts book, this is a must. it is the most important purchase that i have made all semester. it goes through all of the cases in the book, as well as the black letter of the law. it is an excellent resource material to use when finals roll around. purchase this book at the begining of the semester and use it as a review periodically.

A very basic, easy-to-read book..........2003-06-03

A good book for those looking for a very basic, easy-to-read, book. It does have exercises after each chapter, which is good for students. However, many of them are very "repetitive"; the only difference between them are the numbers used in them. I should add that there aren't much challenging problems; most of them are easy.

The book doesn't go deep in some important topics. In some cases the theory seems to be just a "brief intro" to the topic, rather than a real discussion about it. Of course, this does not mean it's a bad book... but it should be taken into account (as the title says) that it deals with the very "fundamentals" of geotechnical engineering.

Fundamentals of Geotechnical Engineering.......2000-11-04

It's excellent book for introduction to Geotechinical Engineering. Only problem I had with this book is that I was not familiar with SI units, but you will get use to it later as you solve some problems by yourelf. There is occassional typos errors with example problems and equation you may need to be careful. Other than that it is still the best book I've read in regards to Geotechincal subject. The book is generally easy to read and understand.

Excellent book for the modeler when approaching structural geology, however the amount of classical structural geology in the book is strikingly sparse. If you are looking for a textbook that balances the two, you should probably look elsewhere.

This is the first comprehensive account of the group-theoretical aspects of the site (local) symmetry approach to the study of crystalline solids, which is based on the concepts of simple induced and band representations of space groups. The efficiency of this approach in the physics and chemistry of solids is demonstrated by considering newly developed applications to electron surface states, point defects, symmetry analysis in lattice dynamics, the theory of second-order phase transitions, and magnetically ordered and non-rigid crystals. Owing to their importance in the theory, the induced representations of space groups and the little group method are considered in detail, including the induced representations of layer (slab) groups and induced corepresentations of magnetic groups. Tables of simple induced representations are given for the 24 most commonly occurring space groups, allowing the rapid analysis of electron and phonon states in complex crystals with many atoms in the unit cell.

The authors have given a comprehensive introduction to the application of induced-representation method in space group. Although it involves some mathematics, I found that it is particular useful in analyzing crystalline states in complicated, non-tradiational lattice structures. I recommend that the reader should also have the book "Representations of the Crystallographic Space Groups" written by O. V. Kovalev to make this book more powerful.

A small, beautifully carved gem by German genius Mann.......2002-10-01

You don't have to plow through monster works like "The Magic Mountain" or "Buddenbrooks" to gain an appreciation for the art of Thomas Mann. "The Holy Sinner" is a short novel (for Mann) about the medieval legend of St. Gregory. This is a story of sin and redemption, with the horrors of the sins, incest and unbridled lust, making the redemption all the more spectacular.

The style is elegant, stylishly mocking the medieval archaic German which is well-rendered into a stylized antique English by the talented Mrs. Lowe. The story is as gripping as any soap opera but the artistry with which it is told is exquisite. As usual, Mann blends his story-telling ability with his genius as a writer of ideas. I can hardly think of another writer who comes close to being able to combine a good yarn with incredible style and deep concepts (maybe Melville and Nabokov, perhaps.)

This is a good preparatory book for "Joseph and his Brothers"--a monumental book about the biblical story of Joseph in Egypt.

Modern Mythology takes a look at Redemption..........2001-08-01

"The Holy Sinner," on a literal level is a story about a multi-generational incestuous family, and their reconcilliation of their sins. Read as such, "The Holy Sinner" is a disturbing account with a semi-satirical take on the religious rituals of redemption, incest, nepotism and penance.

On a deeper level, "The Holy Sinner" comes forth as a contemporary myth. There is a definite straining in this book for a sense of redemption, forgiveness, and the search for meaning. Ripe with symbolism, and exploring a kind of "less-violent" Oedipal storyline, you can feel Mann's struggle over the contemporary situation in Germany in the late 40s and early 50s.

Though not what I would call a "sequel" to "Doctor Faustus," in the allegorical way you can catch a glimpse of Germany in the pages of "The Holy Sinner," I would nevertheless point out that the theme of "penance and change instead of murder and vengeance" seems very contemporarily bound.

However, the story itself hinges on one coincidence too many, and there are passages that nearly grind to a halt in speed and direction. I did come away from the novel with a new respect for Thomas Mann, but this was not an easy read, and, at times, not even enjoyable. The alliteration and sometimes near-poetry of the writing was in some passages immaculate, and then a few pages later almost clumsy and awkward.

I would consider this book one meant more for study than outright enjoyment, though I did enjoy it more often than I didn't. It was work to finish it, however, and more work to digest and attempt to understand it. If you are in the mood for something serious and allegorical, pick up "The Holy Sinner." But if you're looking for something lighter or entertaining, I'd suggest you pass this one by.

A minor work by a major writer.......1998-05-20

Thomas Mann (1875-1955), winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, is one of the great German writers of the 20th century. His best works rely on an exquisite sense of irony, erudition and multiple layers of meaning to explore some of the burning moral issues of our time. "The Holy Sinner" is one of his last works and was written immediately after what many consider his masterpiece, "Doctor Faustus".

In "The Holy Sinner" Mann retells a medieval legend about the life of Pope Gregory in plush,tongue-in-cheek, bejewelled language reminiscent of knightly chronicles. The translator, H. T. Lowe-Porter, has done an excellent job in translating the romance-like pastiches spoken or written by the different characters --in particular if you have a smattering of French, Latin, Spanish, Catalan, Middle English or Provenzal, you will enjoy these light-hearted and occasional romps. However, as is usual with Mann, the glittering surface-story is not the most interesting one. This book is also a Christianized version of Sophocles' Oedipus tragedies and an optimistic commentary on the possibilties of European reconstruction in the aftermath of the second world war.

Unfortunately I feel the three levels do not resonate with the power you find in his masterpieces ("The Magical Mountain", "Doctor Faustus"). Russell Berman, who wrote the introduction to the book does not agree: "In the Holy Sinner, Thomas Mann unfolds an ornate depiction of the Middle Ages, replete with courtly love and jousting knights, illiterate peasants and papal magnificence. This fascinating setting, which the author embellishes with all his linguistic and confabulatory powers, is equally a backdrop for weighty matters of the mind: religious questions of sin and grace, psychoanalytical inquiries into incestous desire, political investigations into the distribution of power."

If you have never read Thomas Mann, I would recommend you start with his novelette "Death in Venice&quo! t; and then go on to "Doctor Faustus" and "The Magic Mountain". If you have read his masterpieces be warned: this is, in Graham Greene's nomenclature, more of an entertainment than a novel.

Fantastic story of transformation and forgiveness.Mann uses the pen like a master.
