      Book Description

The recent evolution of an independent cross market, combined with the technological advancements in computerized trading marked the beginning of a new era in the Foreign Exchange Market. Triangular arbitrage among currencies, once only a theory, is now common practice for those with access to large amounts of money. This book illustrates how converting from one currency to another, then to another, and back to the original currency can be very profitable. This study provides the first direct and precise test of triangular arbitrage based on actual data. A risk-free profit can be made by taking advantage of price discrepancies of a currency in several different markets. The study begins by reviewing past work on triangular arbitrage and provides a comprehensive review of the Foreign Exchange Market and the procedures of computerized trading. The author then presents the theory of triangular arbitrage, given a group of five major currencies. The last chapters develop methods of testing that are original and based on empiracal information. The author is careful to explain that profits arer dependent on many variables related to market volume, volatility, inefficiency, and unexpected news. The markets that consistently show the largest amounts of inefficiency are the dollar-pound-yen, dollar-mark-yen, and dollar-yen-franc markets. Inefficiencies in triangular arbitrage imply that risk-free profitable opportunities exist. Traders can take advantage of those opportunities by focusing their attention on the markets in which profitable opportunities are available.

          Book Description

The right to own firearms is one of the most fundamental, inherent rights of man. Not only do individuals have the natural,God-given right to own property, they also have the basic right to defend themselves from murderers, rapists, thieves, burglars, and other violent, antisocial people in society. Most important, individuals have the right to defend themselves from the oppressive, tyrannical acts of their own government. This book shows why gun control poses an enormous threat to the liberty of the American people. It is a must read for anyone concerned about the future direction of freedom in the United States.

This is a must read for every American. Easy reading. I would never re-sell my copy and recommend a hardcover copy.

5 out of 5 stars Gun Control is nuts.......2004-05-28

          One early reader wrote:
"Do you truly wish felons, terrorists, mentally ill, and other "disqualified" people can acquire firearms? Does the possibility of armed criminals scare you?

If you answered yes to either of those questions, or both of those quentions, then you believe in gun control."

Do you think felons and such care about gun laws. In interviews on 20/20 with prisoners they all answered that they dont care that they shouldn't have guns or carry them. Gun control is best summed up in this:
"Do you beleive honest citizens shouldn't be allowed to own guns?
Do you beleive owning a gun is immoral?
Do you think liberty should be limited?
Do you beleive self defense is immoral?

If you answered yes to any of those questions then you beleive in gun control and possible communism, socialism."

The truth is anti gunners always call anyone who doesn't agree with them a gun nut. Well Im calling them socialist/communist nuts!

1 out of 5 stars What is gun control?.......2002-09-01

Do you truly wish felons, terrorists, mentally ill, and other "disqualified" people can acquire firearms? Does the possibility of armed criminals scare you?

If you answered yes to either of those questions, or both of those quentions, then you believe in gun control.

The problem is that "gun control" is an amorphous subject, rather like tyranny. One person's tyranny can be another's freedom.

One person fears losing his firearms, the other his ability to walk the streets without fear of being shot.

The problem is that most people, even those who claim to be RKBA, actually would like to see gun control. The problem is that both sides have clouded the topic and don't work toward consensus.

This book is divisive and counterproductive. The title reeks of "gun nut" in all its negative connotations.

I would suggest reading a book that is unbiased in discussing the politics of "gun control" and tries to dispassionately examine the topic rather than this book.

          4 out of 5 stars Small Collection.......2000-06-10

A small collection of pro-gun articles, that range from very good to average. The historian's review of Rome's effort to disarm an enemy (by trick)is almost worth the price of the book.

              Book Description

Flexible and fast, computer simulations now play an important role in the study of ecology. This book gives a complete account of one such simulation, the Hurley Pasture Model, a dynamic, deterministic, mechanistic model for grassland, developed by the author and his colleagues over the last
twenty years. The book presents the rationale and theoretical elements of this type of model, followed by an overview of the Hurley grassland simulator and the derivation and construction of its plant, animal, soil and litter, water, and environment and management components. The model is then
evaluated by a series of long- and short-term dynamic simulations and steady state responses, which demonstrate how predictions can be made about the effects of, for example, climate change or particular regimes of fertilizer application, grazing or cutting. This book will be of great value to
grassland agronomists and modelers, crop physiologists and plant ecologists, and to students of ecology as a case study of a plant ecosystem model. It will also be of interest to other ecologists and environmental scientists pursuing computer modeling and its applications.

The four contributors to this volume examine the eugenics movements in Germany, France, Brazil, and the Soviet Union, and describe how geneticists and physicians participated in the development of policies concerning the improvement of hereditary qualities in humans. They examine the scientific components of those programs and discuss the involvement of social, religious, and political forces that significantly altered the original scientific goals. The book opens up new and comparative perspectives on the history of eugenics and the social uses of science in general.

                Book Description

Instability of flows and their transition to turbulence are widespread phenomena in engineering and the natural environment. They are important in applied mathematics, astrophysics, biology, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, physics, and engineering. This is a graduate-level textbook to introduce these phenomena by modeling them mathematically, and describing numerical simulations and laboratory experiments. The visualization of instabilities is emphasized with many figures. Many worked examples and exercises for students illustrate the ideas of the text. Readers are assumed to be fluent in linear algebra, advanced calculus, elementary theory of ordinary differntial equations, complex variable and the elements of fluid mechanics. The book is aimed at graduate students, but is very useful for specialists in other fields.

Drazin was an excellent writer (see Hydrodynamic Stability and Nonlinear Systems), but this book felt very disorganized to me, possibly because he passed away shortly before it's release.

The concept is very good: how do we get from instability to full-fleged turbulence, and are we even ready to answer the question? He gives a good explanation of the stability of ODEs, and follows this with a discussion of the standard linear hydrodynamic stability problems (Kelvin-Helmholtz, Rayleigh-Bénard, etc.). It ends with a discussion of the transition to turbulence.

But the problem is that he has already treated most of these topics in his other books, and the earlier treatments were nearly identical in many respects, or they were just plain better. Even regarding the new material on transition to turbulence, I feel that it did not serve to unify the earlier topics as it should have.

Some further editing may have greatly improved this book and better underscored the overlying theme, but as it stands I feel that one is better off spending their time on his other books.

Complexity studies, though still in their infancy, are controversial. By viewing different systems--whether those in biological, physical, or even social sciences--as a series of interacting "agents," researchers involved in complexity explore a rich and diverse set of phenomena such as self-organization and adaptation. They use these phenomena to model and explain such things as the formation of cities, the behavior of the stock market, and the origin of life.

In this volume, some of the world's leading scientists discuss the role of complexity across all the scientific disciplines. Opinions differ: for some, complexity holds the key to a deeper and fuller understanding of the world about us; to others, it is merely a modern version of the philosophers' stone. For the reader, it provides glimpses and insight into arguably the most exciting approach to science currently available.

                        Book Description

Lord Peter Wimsey's enduring presence and popularity are a tribute to his creator, Dorothy L. Sayers. In this book, McGregor and Lewis explore how Sayers used her fictional hero to comment on, and come to terms with, the social upheaval of the time: world wars, the crumbling of the privileged aristocracy, the rise of democracy, and the expanding struggle of women for equality. Scholars of the Modern Age, fans of the mystery genre, and admirers of Sayers's fiction are sure to appreciate this incisive examination of the literary, social, and historical context of the author's most popular work.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for the Wimsey fan.......2005-10-05

More than almost any other popular mystery sleuth, Lord Peter Wimsey was a man (and a character) who belonged to a specific era. When the hopeful optimism and sense of promise of the 1920s and early 30s were overshadowed by crisis after crisis and the growing specter of war, Lord Peter became a fish out of water, and so faded into well-deserved retirement.

So argue the authors of this fascinating book -- one that any Wimsey fan, or fan of English mysteries generally, should find most rewarding. There's actually quite a lot more to this title than the argument described above. It is, to various degrees, a biography of Dorothy L. Sayers, a dual biography of Lord Peter and Harriet Vane, a social history of England between the wars, an exercise in literary criticism, and an at-least-partial survey of the history of the mystery novel. That's a lot to pack into fewer than 250 pages, but the authors pull it off really well.

As befits a book with so much going on, there were several elements of it I found most interesting. These included the discussion of Lord Peter's development as a character and the difficulties Sayers had in plausibly marrying him off to Harriet; the impact of contemporary events on Sayers' fiction; and why (tied into that last item) Sayers didn't publish, or even work on, with one exception, any more Wimsey stories after 1936, even though he was still immensely popular.

One of the reasons Lord Peter was, and remains, so popular is that he is a well-rounded character, not simply a crime-solving machine like Sherlock Holmes (which, of course, hasn't affected Holmes' popularity either). I highly recommend "Conundrums for the Long Week-End" for anyone interested in understanding Lord Peter still further and recognizing how impressive Dorothy L. Sayers' accomplishment truly is.

(Which reminds me, if you want to know more about Lord Peter's era, I also strongly recommend "The Long Week-End: A Social History of Great Britain 1918-1939" by Robert Graves and Alan Hodge, a book which obviously influenced McGregor and Lewis, up to and including their choice of title.)

5 out of 5 stars This Book Nominated for an Edgar Award.......2001-03-20

I agree that fans of the Wimsey novels will enjoy this book most, but I also think those interested in the period between the world wars, as well as those who like good biography will find much here. Mystery buffs who haven't read Sayers may find this book provides the motivation to do so. I particularly enjoyed the authors' discussion of how Sayers' Wimsey differs from Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, and the reasons for these differences. It should also be noted that this book was just nominated by the Mystery Writers of America for a 2001 Edgar Award in the category of biography and literary criticism.

                        4 out of 5 stars Good book if you're a Wimsey fan.......2001-01-19

If you're a fan of Dorothy L. Sayers' character, Lord Peter Wimsey, you will likely find this book interesting and enjoyable. The authors, both professors, look at the Wimsey series in light of what was happening in England at the time they were being written, and show how Sayers incorporated so much of her surroundings into these stories.

If you're not a Wimsey fan, then there is probably little point in reading this book. Although it is well-written, most of its meaning will probably be lost.
