This book is somewhat out of date. However, it has a great deal of good strategy advice on how to evaluate option positions for risk and for reward. The author provides a straightforward and clear analysis. I recommend it highly. The strategies he proposes are not for small investors interested in playing the options market with a couple of thousand dollars. To achieve adequate diversification, and minimize the impact of transaction costs, one needs to invest a minimum of 30K and better 50K-100K in one of these hedges.
Read this book and you will learn a great deal about the mathematics of risk and reward.
Not an options-expert.......2002-07-12
This so-called options-expert says that options have a different value for different investors. Well, that's simply not true, it doesn't matter whether you buy an option for speculative reasons, or write it to make some extra return, you can calculate the optionprice with the Black and Scholes fomula.
The author correctly states that you should buy options that are undervalued, but his buying criteria don't make any sense.
This book contains many other errors, and with this book you will definitely not outsmart the pros, as the title suggests.

I started to understand things better about the why and the why not of options.Definitely recommend it to beginners.
Not what I had hoped for.......1999-01-18
Not the worst book I have read on investments, but certainly not the best. The author spends much of the book explaining why he believes standard option trading techniques are doomed to fail in the long term, but his rationale are at best fuzzy. He does do a decent job of outlining his twist on covered call writing and portfolio hedging, but does a poor job of backing up his claims; uses a lot of statements like 'should create a greater return' than standard methods. Should? I'd like to see a bit more testing than just his gut feel. Overall, a quick read, lots of Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheets, and some potentially useful ideas, but be prepared to work out a lot of it on your own.

I found this book insighful and informative for both the novice and experienced trader. I only failed to give it 5 stars because there appear to be a few errors in the spreadsheet code included in the appendices. If anyone has encountered the same problems I would appreciate hearing from them.

The new critical edition of the works and correspondence of Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) is being prepared and published under the supervision of the Bentham Committee of University College London. In spite of his importance as jurist, philosopher, and social scientist, and leader of the Utilitarian reformers, the only previous edition of his works was a poorly edited and incomplete one brought out within a decade or so of his death. Eight volumes of the new Collected Works, five of correspondence, and three of writings on jurisprudence, appeared between 1968 and 1981, published by the Athlone Press. Further volumes in the series since then are published by Oxford University Press. The overall plan and principles of the edition are set out in the General Preface to The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham, vol. 1, which was the first volume of the Collected Works to be published. An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation, Jeremy Bentham's best-known work, is a classic text in modern philosophy and jurisprudence. First published in 1789, it contains the important statement of the foundations of utilitarian philosophy and a pioneering study of crime and punishment, both of which remain at the heart of contemporary debates in moral and political philosophy, economics, and legal theory. Printed here in full is the definitive edition, edited by the distinguished scholars J. H. Burns and H. L. A. Hart. Jeremy Bentham (IPA: ['ben??m]) (February 15, 1748 - June 6, 1832) was an English gentleman, jurist, philosopher, and legal and social reformer. He is best known as an early advocate of utilitarianism and animal rights.
Bentham was one of the most influential (classical) liberals, partially through his writings but particularly through his students all around the world, including John Stuart Mill and several political leaders.
He argued in favor of individual and economic freedom, including the separation of church and state, freedom of expression, equal rights for women, animal rights, the end of slavery, the abolition of physical punishment (also of children), the right to divorce, free trade, and no restrictions on interest. But, he was not a libertarian, and supported inheritance tax, restrictions on monopoly power, pensions, and health insurance.
In 1776, Bentham published his Fragment on Government anonymously, a criticism of Blackstone's Commentaries, and in 1780 his Introduction to Principles of Morals and Legislation was published.
A truly influential author!
It's all downhill from here........1999-09-13
Jeremy Bentham was an important social reformer and a major figure in the history of ethics. However you might not know it from reading this dense and forbidding tract. Even a short excerpt can be tough going. However, utilitarianism has been, and remains, one of the most influential ethical philosophies of all time, and this was among its modern founding documents.
If one can come away from it with a general sense of what utilitarianism is, what act utilitarianism is, and how it gets from egoism in psychology to neutralism in ethics, one has done pretty well. This should help the reader start thinking about what some of the problems with this theory are, how it measures up to its competitors, and how it can be applied to specific problems.
The best news for those who have braved this text is that Mill and other later thinkers will seem like poetry in motion by comparison.

This book emphasizes the role that electron interactions play in the properties of condensed matter. It teaches the use of the powerful nonperturbative techniques that have become available in the last decades to discuss such topics as mixed valence systems, Kondo systems, heavy electrons, high-temperature copper oxide superconductors, the quantum Hall effect, and low-dimensional isotropic magnets. Mathematical derivations are self contained. Appendices provide standard many-body tools including second quantization, Grassmann variables, generating functionals, linear response, correlation functions, Fermi and Bose coherent-states path integrals, Matsubara representation, and the method of steepest descents. There are guided bibliographies and exercises at the end of each chapter.

good magnetism starting point.......2006-05-04
I have to be honest and say that I have to spend time with this book to understand everything, but I think this is one of those books that's worth the effort. AFTER a many body class this book is an appropriate way to foray into magnetism. The first thing i'd do is prove eq 2.9 and read chapters 1-3, just read (having some companion text for this 'easier' material is useful here). Once you are beyond chapter 3 you can start to calculate the results yourself. Auerbach talks about the ferro- and antiferro- magnets and different spin representations, RVBs, order and disoder, etc. There is a discussion of the NLsM and some large-N methods. I found it helpful to pull out original references at times. At the end i think you gain perspective on quantitative tools employed in magnetism, but realise also that this book is a text and therefore an introduction to the field. In that sense, i think the point here is to get some basic principle and learn various methods to go apply to new problems. I dont know any other book like it.

The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales.
