    Book Description

The Minority Game is a physicist's attempt to explain market behaviour by the interaction between traders. With a minimal set of ingredients and drastic assumptions, this model reproduces market ecology among different types of traders. Its emphasis is on speculative trading and information flow. The book first describes the philosophy lying behind the conception of the Minority Game in 1997, and includes in particular a discussion about the El Farol bar problem. Then it reviews the main steps in later developments, including both the theory and its applications to market phenomena. This book gives a colourful and stylized, but also realistic picture of how financial markets operate.

... go to the bar tonight?

Inspired by Brian Arthur's El Farol Bar Game, the minority Game provided the path for the entry of many statistical physicists into econophysics. Game theory, since the 1980's, has become a large part of economic theory, but is largely restricted to studies of Nash equilibria, which (by Nash's own design) is a neo-classical idea. Economic systems are instead complex, not amenable to any imaginable equilibrium analysis. As Per Bak said, equilibrium is a dead system, like a glass of water at rest. Challet, Marsili, and Zhang are three leading researchers in economics, and are the experts on the Minority Game.

This book begins with a very nice introduction to the main ideas and then includes a compilation of the main papers in the field by the Fribourg Group, who are leaders in the new and growing field of econophysics, and other main players. Physicists will enjoy seeing the tools of statistical mechanics in action in an economic setting, and economists will be encouraged to think outside their equilibrium straightjacket by studying the book. But the full range of topics is covered, Nash equilibria as well as cooperation. the compilation also includes some very nice contributions to finance theory and market efficiency.

        Book Description

Society and individual members thereof who approach the court in conscience desire justice. They place their hope not only in the knowledge but also in the morality of the judges. At a time when the values of the judiciary are under intense scrutiny, Noonan and Winston present an extensive, highly informed collection of readings with commentary and explication. They address the concept and role of "judge," the act of "judging," and the requirements and potential abuses inherent in the system and process of sitting in judgment. This is a reflective, yet eminently realistic consideration of the fundamental issues and questions involved in establishing a reasonable framework for assessing judicial morality. The work first examines qualities of the ideal, corrupt, and over-zealous or political judge. The editors next address the judge's role and response in view of the tensions rising not only from the facts of the case and legal precedents but also from such human qualities as compassion. They also look at the power of social expectations and personal beliefs as possible influences on judicial decisions. Finally, the editors consider the need judges have for independence and study that necessary factor in relationships to accountability and also potential for abuse. This is a learned, inclusive, yet accessible and captivating, work. It will clarify and reinvigorate discussion of critically important issues fundamental to an ethical judiciary.

              Book Description

Since the Industrial Revolution the chemical composition of the atmosphere has changed at a rate unprecedented in recent history. Ozone depletion emerged as one of the most important environmental issues of the 20th century as evidence grew for substantial human influences on the atmospheric ozone abundances over much of the globe. The science of the ozone layer and its interactions with halogenated chemical compounds are the primary subjects of this book. The volume provides a comprehensive view of the chemical, dynamical, and radiative processes that affect ozone and other chemicals in the stratosphere and mesosphere. Over recent decades our understanding of these processes has increased dramatically. The discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole has shown that human activities can lead to major changes in our environment. From a review of a previous edition - "[…] an interesting and well-written overview of the current status of our knowledge of the composition of the middle atmosphere and the basic radiative, dynamical and photochemical processes which maintain it." (Bulletin American Meteorological Society)

4 out of 5 stars A Milestone in Scientific History.......2006-08-12

James Van Allen passed away in August 2006, leaving an awesome legacy of achivement. This slender, well-written volume describes the progress in atmospheric and space physics with a focus on Van Allen's crowning achivement: his detection of the high-energy radiation belts around the Earth. The Van Allen belts were found by particle detectors prepared by Van Allen and his associates at the University of Iowa and carried aloft on the early Explorer satellites of 1958.
Van Allen continued his work in physics and space science up until his death at age 91. He assisted greatly in the researching of the book I co-authored, The First Space Race, which told the story of the earliest satellites. Origins of Magentospheric Physics tells an accessible, compelling story of scientific discovery.

With publishing empires swallowing smaller house for breakfast and agents swiping authors left, right, and center, the modern book industry might seem an insider's paradise, an aspiring author's nightmare, a reader's Goldberg contraption. Alas, according to Daniel Pool, 'twas ever thus. Money, advertising, publicity, blurbs, and the author's charisma were just as central to Victorian bookselling as they are now. Focusing particularly on Dickens, Charlotte Brontë, George Eliot, and Thackeray, the author builds up a portrait of cutthroat times and cutthroat measures. Readers will be particularly taken with the author's account of the rise of the serial novel--and Dickens's frustration with the form. (Something Flaubert quickly copped to. After finishing The Pickwick Papers, he commented to George Sand, "Some bits are magnificent, but what a defective structure.") And the quotations Daniel Pool presents, from the epigraphs to Virginia Woolf's assessment on the final page, make Dickens' Fur Coat essential social history.

                Book Description

Daniel Pool, author of the bestselling What Jane Ate and Charles Dickens Knew,  brilliantly turns his keen eye to England's great Victorian novelists themselves, to reveal the surprising private side of their human genius. From literary superstar Charles Dickens, whose domestic scandals were fodder for early gossip columnists to the shy, introverted Charlotte Bronte, who battled rumors about being Thackeray's mistress, Dickens' Fur Coat and Charlotte's Unanswered Letters is a delightful book for anyone has been caught in the spell of Jane Eyre, Great Expectations or Middlemarch--and longed to peer behind the heavy drapery of Victorian propriety at the private lives of these master storytellers as they battled their publishers and won the devotion of an avid reading public.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Decline (and Fall) of the English Novel.......2005-09-16

I must admit that the title of this book instantly drew my curiosity. As a fan of many Victorian novelists, I was curious what so-called secrets and mysteries Daniel Pool would uncover. "Dickens' Fur Coat and Charlotte's Unanswered Letters" may not be an appropriate title since Pool covers much more ground than just these two authors; he examines the rise of the novel in England during the nineteenth century with great care and thoroughness.

While Pool does focus a great amount of time on the writings of Dickens and Charlotte Bronte (and briefly on her sisters) this book is not just a mere examination of authors. Mixed in with the mini-biography, and gossip-page fodder scandals these authors created, is the detailed explanation of the popularity of the novel. Pool iterates the progress novels made from three-decker behemoths to readily available cheap one-volume novels. Another way that the popularity of novels expanded in England was due to serialization; the publishing of novels in installments in literary magazines made these stories available to a wider audience in an age when novels could only be accorded as a luxury to the richest society members.

Throughout the course of the book, readers are treated to mini-biographical sketches of writers such as Trollope, Thackerary, Hardy, Henry James, and George Eliot. These sketches are intermingled with almost too much information at times and the book is supplemented with numerous pictures. At times it seems as if Pool is trying to cram too much information into too little space; and sometimes it seems as if the same information is being repeated with no overall plan as to the direction of his writing. However, "Dickens' Fur Coat and Charlotte's Unanswered Letters" is a delightful read for any fan of Victorian novelists, or novels and the rise of literature in general.

3 out of 5 stars fun and informative, but ..........2004-04-13

Daniel Pool undoubtedly enjoys his research and his topic, his enthusiasm is evident on every page. Unfortunately, that's the problem. He has too many little tidbits of info that he's got no place for, so he scatters them about without regard as to whether they make sense in the context.

Here's one example. Early in the book, on page 35, he's explaining how Thackeray came to live in Kensington.
"Staffed by a manservant, a cook, and a maid, the house could boast the Kensington Square constructed in the era of Thackeray's beloved Queen Anne just around the corner. The broken-nosed Thackeray (it had happened in a schoolboy fight at the prestigious Charterhouse school) had no wife to share his home."
Now, I'll admit it IS interesting that Thackeray broke his nose in a schoolboy brawl, but does that information really fit into a description of his Kensington home? There are several instances like this, where Pool peppers his prose with juicy tidbits that don't fit with what he's talking about at the time, but don't fit anywhere else either so here you go. It made me spend a lot of time thinking, "why is he telling me this now? Did I miss some reference or something?" It dulled my enjoyment of the book.

4 out of 5 stars The pioneers of English fiction........2003-01-27

Pool's book is a well-paced survey of the industry that produced the greater (well-known) Victorian novels. By "industry" is meant process. He covers the development of publishing houses, writers, lending libraries, serials, trans-atlantic markets, and the innovative way that enterprising book distributors managed to bring their product to the public. It all combines for a fascinating story, and Pool does it well.
It could be said that he focuses on three writers, these being Charles Dickens, Charlotte Bronte, and William Makepeace Thackeray. These three (along with Marian Evans a.k.a. George Eliot) played a vital role in the development of the Victorian novel, and they comprise the bulk of Pool's discussion.
The interaction and intrigues between the main three authors make for National Enquirer-like fodder... with the difference that this stuff is TRUE! Truly, there were "rows and romances" as the subtitle suggests.
The Victorian era was an exciting, but very demanding (downright scary) time to be an author. There were the restraints of format (the serial novel had to be written in self-contained installments; the "triple-decker" had to be able to be neatly split in three), there was the gender prejudice (one ought not to be a woman writer), and there was the ubiquitous spirit of cut-throat competition and jealousy in this burgeoning literary world. Only the strong survived, and only the versatile were recognized at all.
The latter third of the book covers the rise of great writers like Wilkie Collins, Anthony Trollope, Thomas Hardy, and Henry James.
The author takes a subject having the potential of being dry as crackers and presents it as a sprawling and wonderfully connected story. Good work. Reading this book made me realize that there is a HISTORY to the easy access to good literature we enjoy in our day and age, and made me appreciate those many pioneers who cut the swath to it.

4 out of 5 stars A mistitled but informative and fun cultural study.......2001-04-01

Let's get this straight right off the bat: Daniel Pool's book is purposefully mistitled to make you think that it would be a sequel of sorts to his extremely useful and popular compendium of facts important to Victorian fiction WHAT CHARLES DICKENS ATE AND JANE AUSTEN KNEW. This book is very different: it reads like a straightforward narrative, and it's an enjoyable, gossipy, and onformative account of the demands of the publishing market in the mid-Victorian world of the novel, and how it created the careers of Dickens, the Brontës, Trollope, Thackeray, George Eliot, etc. The mistitling (undoubtedly to make the book sell better) is thus quite appropriate, in that the novel helpfully etails the ways in which publishing conventions of the time (the rise of Mudie's lending library, the convention of the three-decker) made and shaped literary careers.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not enough info.......2000-06-21

This book was very informative, but there was not enough information about the less well known authors and almost too much about Dickens and Bronte.

                      Book Description

Since the 1960s, German scholars have developed distinctive methods for writing the history of political, social, and philosophical concepts. Applied to France as well as Germany, their work has set new standards for the historical study of political and social language, Begriffsgeschichte. The questions these scholars address, and the methods they apply systematically to a broad range of sources, differ as much from the styles of Hegel, Dilthey, and Meinecke as from those of A.O. Lovejoy, J.G.A. Pocock, and Quentin Skinner. Begriffsgeschichte treats political language neither as autonomous discourse, nor as the product of ideology, social structure, or elite manipulation. Although conceptual historians agree that the field of action is defined by language, they place concept formation and use within historical contexts. By surveying political and social discourses systematically, this genre traces how the great modern revolutions have been conceptualized in sharply contested forms by competing political and social formations, as well as by individual thinkers. Combining intellectual with social history, historians of concepts track linguistically the advent, mentalities, and effects of modernity. In The History of Political and Social Concepts, Melvin Richter analyzes the theories which have generated conceptual history, and their reinterpretation of key concepts such as Max Weber's three types of legitimate Herrschaft, and that of civilitOe in France. What is it that we know when we learn the history of a concept? What difference does it make that we know it? After assessing the programs and achievements of Begriffsgeschichte, the author argues the need for an analogous project to chart the careers of political and social concepts used in English-speaking societies. Addressed not only to historians of political and social thought, this work will interest students and scholars of political culture, social historians, and historians of ideas, historiography, law, language, and rhetoric.

                          Book Description

Elizabethan Silent Language is an anatomy of an alternative or supplementary mode of communication in a culture prized for its literary contributions. Through the use of nonverbal media, Elizabethans coexpressed, enhanced, and sometimes even subverted the medium of the written or spoken word. Besides written documents and works of art, extant material reveals new referents and deeper meaning for Elizabethan verbal expression. Funeral monuments, jewelry, costume, foodstuffs, protocol, sumptuary laws, portraits, architecture, management of public appearance, absence, and silence—all were forms of a silent language.

The main elements of the semantic system of Elizabethan silent language were in many cases those of literal language, with resources in religion, in antiquity as translated through humanist tradition, in custom and law, in the Continental Renaissance, and in Tudor historiography—syntactic elements translated through word and practice and subject to personal inflection. Assumed as given values were the masculine norm, young adulthood, courtly service, discernment of ethical and aesthetic dimensions in all aspects of life, a comprehensive rule of decorum, and the preservation of religious, political, and social hierarchy.

Elizabethan Silent Language is a unique book. Although Renaissance scholars have focused their attention on individual components of texts, such as ceremony, costume, architecture, protocol, and portrait, no other source synthesizes these components.

On April 12, 1934, the strongest wind ever known to blow across the face of the earth descended on Mount Washington, New Hampshire. The Big Wind, as it was called, hasn't appeared with quite the same force since, but, writes Eric Pinder, Mount Washington gets plenty of powerful, downright nasty weather all the same.

Pinder, a meteorological observer on the mountain, does many things in Tying Down the Wind. He offers a fine study of mountain meteorology, for mountains make their own weather; and he provides a fascinating natural history of that particular Appalachian spire, which sees millions of visitors each year. More than that, Pinder serves up wonderfully learned musings on some of the basic questions that children ask and adults are too often unprepared to answer. Why, he asks, is the night sky black? Why does the wind blow at all? He answers with notes on the planet's core, on the powerful ionic winds that blast from the belly of the sun, on planetary paradoxes (how can the sun be responsible for both heat and cold?), and on what thinkers through time have had to say about such matters. His answers are sometimes speculative, but always grounded in reliable data, much of which Pinder backs with anecdotes drawn from his own experiences on Mount Washington--which, though located in a temperate zone, is really a fragmentary Arctic island, meteorologically speaking.

Imagine yourself kept indoors by inclement weather with a companion who has a keenly developed sense of how the world works, and who is all too happy to tell you about it. That's the kind of experience reading Pinder's book offers, and it's a treat. --Gregory McNamee

Generally I'm really fascinated with tales of adventure, weather, and Mt. Washington. But I really couldn't read this book because of the overbearing prose style. Honestly, I returned it to the library after reading a few paragraphs.

Mr. Pinder fancies himself a poet, but what is needed here is a plainspoken storyteller. Lines like "the stars don't speak" are not beautiful or enlightening, just annoying.

                            1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-02-14

I was prepared to really enjoy "Tying Down the Wind". I've been a weather buff for years and was looking forward to scientific information combined with entertaining anecdotes. The information is probably there somewhere but the language is inappropriately flowery and strains self-consciously at similes, analogies and images that add nothing and seriously detract from what he's trying to say. I was slogging through it rather joylessly anyway because reading is my main addiction, but when it came down to talking about a crescent moon setting at daybreak I just gave up. I would like to assume that he knows better and just got lost in his own convolutions but I really don't know. I would not recommend this book to anyone for any reason. It is a waste of time and money.

2 out of 5 stars Where was the editor of this book?.......2003-10-04

This book was written with no table of contents in mind. It rambles. Seriously rambles. Some of his anecdotes are entertaining but you can literally open this book at any page and begin reading there. There is no beginning, middle, or end. After a while, it just stops. At least two thirds of this book has nothing to do with Mt. Washington but is anecdotes of his weather experiences throughout his life. Some images are quite pretty and poetic but I kept waiting for some structure to the book. Very disorganized and disappointing to me.

                            5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2001-07-16

Pinder's book is entertaining and educational! I love science, but most science books tend to be too boring and stuffy. Tying Down the Wind is filled with fascinating stories and facts. Do not be afraid of the genre. Both science "nerds" and science "lamens" will love this novel. I also found Pinder's writing to be beautiful. He writes like poetry, but the meaning is never lost. Even with the beautiful descriptions, anyone with a working brain will come away with this book with a vast increase in knowledge on the topic. I am now even more interested in science and weather because of this book!

                            1 out of 5 stars Awful!.......2001-03-10

Rarely have I had the misfortune to read such a poorly written book. The author has put together an astonishing collection of trite and unoriginal descriptions of-what should have been-interesting weather phenomena. The writing is so flowery that if you were to eliminate all adjectives you would most likely be left with a book of less than ten pages. Hidden amongst the fluff is the occasional nugget of information, but it is quickly buried again lest the reader actually learn something.

An example: "If you grope for wind with your hand, it dodges and swivels, so that instead of catching the slippery essence of the atmosphere, you come up instead with a fistful of nothing. Wind wistles and mutters in a soft language full of vowels and sighs; it says little that we understand. The wind is alive but alien; it refuses to answer our questions, but asks many of its own."

Honestly, have you ever heard such drivel?

Freedom for the Seas in the 21st Century brings together leading international experts on marine policy to address current threats to the health of the seas and to offer new approaches to the challenge of protecting our marine environment. The paradigm presented is one of ocean governance rather than of law or policy; it challenges the prevailing concept of "freedom of the seas" and calls instead for a governing notion of "freedom for the seas" where the primary goal is the protection of ecological vitality.

This book is fantastic! It is one of a few books on Marine Conservation that is easy to read and understand. It is good for people who are just starting to find themselves interested in marine life and conservation as well as a refresher for people already in the field. There is a wealth of information on these treasures, including material on marine life, ecosystems, history, science, conservation, maritime archaeology, whaling, research, monitoring, management, advisory councils, resource protection, restoration projects, ocean etiquette, and much more. There are many reports and documents with critical information on this subject. An environmental bill that focused on ocean health, the National Marine, Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act of 1972, established a system of marine protected areas. This new system would be administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), established in 1970. The National Marine Sanctuaries Act - The purpose of this Act was to prevent "unregulated dumping of material into the oceans, coastal, and other waters" that endanger "human health, welfare, and amenities, and the marine environment, ecological systems and economic potentialities." Within this law, the transportation and dumping of radioactive, chemical, or biological substances were forbidden. However, this Act also included Title III, later called the National Marine Sanctuaries Act, which charged the Secretary of the Department of Commerce to identify, designate, and manage marine sites based on conservational, ecological, recreational, historical, aesthetic, scientific or educational value within significant national ocean and Great Lake waters. Under the newly created agency, NOAA began examining nationally significant marine areas for possible sanctuary designation. Two years after the Act was passed, the nation's first marine sanctuary was created to preserve the wreckage of the USS Monitor, a Civil War ironclad, resting in 240 feet of water off North Carolina, 16 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Over the next 25 years, eleven additional marine sanctuaries would be added. On the Pacific Ocean, Olympic Coast, Washington State and Monterey Bay, Gulf of the Farallones and Cordell Bank in California joined the system and brought into it a rich diversity of marine ecosystems. The Flower Garden Banks, a coral oasis in a sea of oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico was designated. In the Atlantic Ocean, Gray's Reef Stellwagen Bank, and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuaries protected precious coral reefs and rich fishing grounds, loggerhead turtles and right whales. In the Hawaiian Islands, a sanctuary protecting Humpback Whales was established to help preserve important breeding grounds of these vulnerable cetaceans. And the marine sanctuary farthest from the U.S. mainland was designated in Fagatale Bay, American Samoa in a fringing coral reef nestled within an eroded volcanic crater. In Fall 1999, the thirteenth sanctuary, and the first in the Great Lakes in Thunder Bay, Michigan, joined the system. This incredible CD-ROM is packed with over 9,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Macintosh systems. The Acrobat cataloging technology adds enormous value and uncommon functionality to this impressive collection of government documents and material. Our news and educational discs are privately compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government.
