        Book Description

Developing and Role Playing Effective Sales Presentations is entirely dedicated to the sales process and developing the sales call. Each student builds and role plays an actual presentation using a simple, learn-by-doing process that is consistent with the techniques of leading corporate sales trainers. Students begin the process of developing a sales presentation by choosing actual products or services that they can sell, then they gather information needed for the presentation. Students plan what will then be communicated in the four sections of the sales presentation: The Approach, Securing Desire, Handling Objections, and Closing the Sale. Finally, they role-play the presentation, ensuring that they can combine all parts of the sales process effectively.

          Book Description

Las Siete Partidas, or Seven Divisions, is the major law code of thirteenth-century Spain, compiled by Alfonso X the Learned of Castile. Seven centuries later, this compendium of legal and customary information remains the foundation of modern Spanish law. In addition, its influence is notable in the law of Spain's former colonies, including Texas, California, and Louisiana. The work's extraordinary scope offers unparalleled insight into the social, intellectual, and cultural history of medieval Spain. Built on the armature of a law code, it is in effect an encyclopedia of medieval life.

Long out of print, the English translation of Las Siete Partidas--first commissioned in 1931 by the American Bar Association--returns in a superior new edition. Editor and distinguished medieval historian Robert I. Burns, S.J., provides critical historical material in a new general Introduction and extensive introductions to each Partida. Jerry Craddock of the University of California, Berkeley, provides updated bibliographical notes, and Joseph O'Callaghan of Fordham University contributes a section on law in Alfonso's time.

Las Siete Partidas is presented in five paperback volumes, each available separately:

The Medieval Church, Volume 1: The World of Clerics and Laymen (Partida I) ISBN 0-8122-1738-1 336 pages Paper $28.50

Medieval Government, Volume 2: The World of Kings and Warriors (Partida II) ISBN 0-8122-1739-X 296 pages Paper $28.50

The Medieval World of Law, Volume 3: Lawyers and Their Work (Partida III) ISBN 0-8122-1740-3 384 pages Paper $29.95

Family, Commerce, and the Sea, Volume 4: The Worlds of Women and Merchants (Partidas IV and V) ISBN 0-8122-1741-1 344 pages Paper $28.50

Underworlds, Volume 5: The Dead, the Criminal, and the Marginalized (Partidas VI and VII) ISBN 0-8122-1742-X 384 pages Paper $29.95

The complete five-volume paperback set: ISBN 0-8122-1737-3 1744 pages $135.00

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Seven Divisions in five books.......2001-12-13

It's such a relief to have the Siete Partidas available in this attractive, reasonably priced set. The venerable Robert I. Burns has given it a wonderful general introduction and the index increases its accesibility even more than the very clear translation does. No more ploughing through paragraph after paragraph of Old Spanish, in 19th-century print, to get to the enlightening and even entertaining ideas that so well characterize the 13th century and give sociological background to any kind of medieval research.

This digital document is a journal article from Ecological Engineering, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

                            Description:
In the temperate zone, agroforestry systems come increasingly into focus as they offer an approach for the production of fuelwood, thus matching the increasing demand for a self-supply with bioenergy in rural decentralized areas. Because of the large area potential of marginal land, research activities aimed at a reliable estimation of the minimum productivity of fast-growing tree species under most unfavourable site conditions. Two agroforestry systems were established on reclaimed mine sites in NE-Germany (Lusatia) and Central Germany (Helmstedt). The yield potential and the sustainability of yields were studied for different clones of poplar (Populus spp.), willow (Salix viminalis L.), and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.), considering different rotation periods (3-, 6-, and 9-year-rotation) and approaches of soil amelioration (mineral fertiliser, compost). On both sites the highest yields of woody biomass were found for R. pseudoacacia L. regardless of rotation period and amelioration measures. On loamy substrates in the Helmstedt mining district, all tree species and clones responded positively to soil amelioration measures. In the agroforestry system in Lusatia, special emphasis was given to the interaction between trees (R. pseudoacacia) and crops (Medicago sativa L.). Considering the land equivalent ratio (LER), R. pseudoacacia hedgerows have practically no negative influence on yields of M. sativa. Hence, with regard to an increasing demand for woody biomass, alley cropping with R. pseudoacacia and crops such as M. sativa may provide a promising alternative for future land use in the temperate zone.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing and objective look at genes.......2000-04-15

This book is thought provoking and stimulating reading for those interested in genetics. Ms. Hubbard lays bare the medical establishment's incestuous culture that self-affirms even the most absurd genetic concepts.

This book illuminates for us some of the problems with genetic testing within our medical system, for example, she says, `the predictive significance of genetic information is often exaggerated or misstated'.

Many people, have been and will be, discriminated against because they have genetic markers or they allegedly have a predisposition to certain diseases. Yet Ms. Hubbard explains that we are not simply our genes but `an interplay between numbers of genetic and environmental factors'. She covers predictive tests and their downfalls, genes and behavior.

This book is about real objective science and it is sure to give you a heavy dose of reality and a new perspective on the human genome project, and all the tests and products that come of it. Also of note, her son Elijah Wald has written an essay on gay genes, in this book, which is also included in the book they wrote together, Exploding the Gene Myth. Read this book if you are interested in genetic testing, women's health, genetic discrimination, sexism and sociobiology, and/or racism.

The review from "Reviewer: A reader from USA" (see above) is referring to a different handbook, nameley the "Handbook of Surface and Colloid Chemistry." However, this page is referring to the "CRC Handbook of Thermophysical and Thermochemical Data/Book and Disk" which is totally different handbook. Please make the necessary adjustments and remove his review from this page.

1 out of 5 stars where is the data ?.......1999-02-12

I just received the Handbook of Surface and Colloid Chemistry. According to the review there should be a lot of data listed in the handbook. However I only found some listing of solubility parameter data. WHERE IS THE LIST OF SURFACE TENSION OR SURFACE ENERGY DATA ? Chang Hsiung

                                Book Description

Liquid crystals are fluids with directionality defined. Polymers are long molecules with a shape that can be changed. As a network, polymers form rubber-a soft solid that is locally liquid-like and capable of huge extension. Liquid crystal elastomers area combination of all these curious
aspects, but with additional, revolutionary new phenomena-for example, spontaneous shape changes of several hundred percent induced by temperature change, with equally large opto-mechanical responses, shape change without energy cost (Soft elasticity), color change with strain, lasing and photonics,
sensitivity to molecular handedness and soft solid ferroelectricity. This book is a primer for liquid crystals, polymers, rubber and elasticity. It then describes the theory and experiment of these remarkable materials for the first time as a monograph. Worked examples are solved so that the
reader can become proficient in the field himself. The book is directed at physicists, chemists, material scientists, engineers and applied mathematicians at the graduate level and beyond.

From the author: This study investigates deformation of a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (TLCP) in different die geometries. Blends of a TLCP with a thermoplastic elastomer of EPDM were made in a twin-screw extruder. Morphological observation of the extruded blends demonstrates the complimentary effect of shear in the die exit on dispersed phase deformation and fibril formation. Shear strain can affect fibril formation for a relatively large dispersed phase in the region close to the die wall. However, the main role of shearing is in breaking up the larger particles and initial polydomain structure. A strong elongational deformation on the blended melt after the die exit is required, and free microfibrils normally observed in in situ composites were not easily formed by shear deformation only in the die.

From the author: Blends of a polyester elastomer (PEL) having a hard segment of polyester (PBT) and soft segment of polyether (PTMG) and a liquid crystalline copolyester (LCP), poly(benzoate-naphthoate), were prepared in a twin-screw extruder. Specimens for mechanical testing were prepared by injection molding. The morphology of the LCP/PEL blends was characterized under different processing conditions. To determine what conditions were necessary for the development of a fibrillar morphology of LCP, we have studied the effect of processing method (extrusion and injection molding), injection molding temperature (below and above the melting point of LCP), and gate position in the mold (direct gate and side gate). SEM studies revealed that some extensional flow was required for the fibrillar formation of LCP and the fibrillar structure of LCP was controlled by the processing method. The morphology of the blends was found to be affected by their compositions and processing conditions. SEM studies revealed that finely dispersed spherical domains of LCP were formed in the PEL matrix and the inclusions were deformed in fibrils from the spherical droplets with increasing LCP content and injection temperature. The mechanical properties of the LCP/PEL blends were also found to be affected by their compositions and processing conditions. The mechanical properties of LCP/PEL blends were very similar to those of polymeric composite. An attempt was made to correlate the structure of the blends from the scanning electron microscope with the measured mechanical properties. All of the aspects of the morphology were possible to explain in terms of the mechanical properties of the blends. A DSC study revealed that the crystallization of PEL was accelerated by the addition of LCP in the matrix and a partial compatibility between LCP and PEL was predicted. The rheological behavior of the LCP/PEL blends was found to be very different from that of the parent polymers, and significant viscosity reductions were observed in the blend consisting of only 5 wt% of LCP.

                                          Book Description

Long considered a leading literary figure of the Old South, William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870) wrote letters, novels, short fiction, drama, essays, and poetry in his prolific career. Born in Charleston to an old South Carolina family of modest means and raised by a grandmother with whom his father left him after his mother's death, Simms felt a simultaneous sense of loyalty to and alienation from his native region. He was a major intellectual figure on the East Coast before the Civil War but saw his New York publishers abandon him after secession, of which he was a vocal supporter.

Simms's novels and poetry have been published in modern editions, and he has been the subject of numerous biographies and critical studies, but until now there has been no collection covering the broad spectrum of his writings. The Simms Reader presents a selection of his nonnovelistic work--letters, short fiction, essays, historical writings, poetry, and epigrams--chosen and introduced by the preeminent Simms scholar John Caldwell Guilds.
