From the first sip of your morning coffee to the last sheep you count at night, you will face an average of 23 adversities, predicts author Paul G. Stoltz in this follow-up to the best-selling The Adversity Quotient. The key to coping, he says, lies in improving your Adversity Quotient--"the measurable, precise, and unconscious way you respond to adversity." Here, Stoltz applies AQ to the challenges of working in the "entrepreneurial, high-velocity New Economy."
First, he details the bad news: AQ is hardwired into you during your youth by parental models and early experiences. But the good news--that your AQ can be improved and put to work on your job--is the promise this book capably delivers. Stoltz, an organizational communications expert who has measured the Adversity Quotient of 100,000 people, is fond of using mountain-climbing metaphors to describe elements of organizational adversity. For example, low AQers are "quitters" who have given up the climb or "campers" who have found a safe, shady spot. But for the resilient high AQers, "the climbers," there ain't no mountain high enough.
The lower your AQ, the more of a toll job stress will take, warns Stoltz, whose assessment tools for measuring AQ are as detailed as his strategies for creating a "climbing culture" in your organization. The pages are packed with maps, self-assessments, specific strategies, and smart end-of-chapter summaries. This hands-on approach is undermined at times by too many metaphors, acronyms, and lists, as well as a tendency to oversell AQ as a predictor of success. Still, for executives, managers, and employees alike, The Adversity Quotient @ Work is a supportive and strategic home-schooling course for coping with the demands of today's workplace.--Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Make Everyday Challenges The Key To Your Success --Putting the Principles of AQ Into Action
In 1997, Paul Stoltz unleashed a revolution with his groundbreaking book Adversity Quotient: Turning Obstacles into Opportunities, introducing the concept of the Adversity Quotient into public consciousness. Now, in Adversity Quotient @ Work, the eagerly anticipated follow-up to his bestseller, Stoltz applies the principles of his brilliant theory to the uniquely challenging environment of the workplace.
Adversity Quotient, or AQ, is a measure of one's ability to handle adversity. People who can't handle adversity become easily overwhelmed and emotional, then pull back and stop trying; those who handle adversity well become the leaders of today and tomorrow. Stoltz shows you not only how to measure your own AQ but how to improve it, and how to put these ideas to work for you and your organization. Based on the time-tested principles established by his first book, Adversity Quotient@ Work clearly demonstrates how workers and managers can use the concept of AQ to their own advantage and to the benefit of their clients, customers, and organizations. Designed for managers, supervisors, and employees, from the smallest technology start-up to the largest Fortune 500 multinational, Adversity Quotient @ Work gives readers simple, powerful ways to supercharge their lives and organizations immediately.
Adversity Quotient @ Work teaches readers how to hire and retain highly motivated and talented workers, develop employees to their full potential, and create a leadership culture that encourages all to put forth their best efforts and maximize their performance capabilities. Based on real research performed with thousands of managers and members of the workforce on the front lines of hundreds of businesses, it will quickly become any corporation's indispensable handbook for success.

Climb Every Mountain!.......2001-01-09
Finally a book that explains how a person can manifest a more powerful personal and professional life.Going beyond simple advice and into simplifying vital scientific knowledge, AQ@Work is filled with achieveable and exciting methods to help everyone access their potential. This book doesn't tell the reader he should be more successful, more productive, or more positive,, this book actually describes usuable tools for becoming more successful, more productive and more positive! The use of the Climbers, Campers, and Quitters metaphor is a brilliant way to guide reader's visualization of their current status on life's path. Some may resent the labels and metaphors, I would urge them to read the description of Camper once more and weep....
Adversity Quotient @ Work - Works!.......2001-01-01
Read this book! Dr. Paul Stotlz has written a wonderful book that can help us all to accomplish more at work and to enjoy it while we do. With his easy to undertsand concepts and easy to follow "how to's" we can all learn to harness the adversities and obstacles that we face every day and to use them as springboards in our lives. This book has already helped me and many of my friends to develop a higher level of perseverance which is helping to drive higher levels of accomplishment and statisfaction not only in our work but in every facet of lives. Dr. Stoltz, thank you for sharing your great insight!
Pop Psychology Masquerading As Science.......2000-12-11
Very, very little science in this one and one of many current books taking on a simple metaphor and developing a whole theory around it (...life is a climb, don't quit...or how about, life is like fishing, try different lures each day...or, life is like sharpening a pencil---sharp points work effectively, but sharpen too much, and the pencil grows short...). I went to a writer's workshop and the consultant there stated that the quickest way to publish a book is to think up one of these silly metaphors and write a self-help book around it. Maybe the author of this one was in the same workshop! Anyway, my advice is for readers to "climb a real mountain" and read good science---not this turkey.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING WRONG?.......2000-11-25
Not moving up the corporate ladder as quickly as you think you should? Was your brilliant idea or presention rejected? Were you overlooked for a promotion? Why? This book attempts to answer these questions. Author, Paul Stoltz has identified three types of people in the workplace, and how they react to setbacks. First there are quitters who are bitter and avoid change; secondly, campers who settle into comfort zones, and thirdly, climbers who are relentless in the pursuit of their goals. He emphasizes that "climbers" are the achievers. The book is is filled with self assessment charts and maps for strategies. But the key, it seems is perserverance not paranoia; focused effort not whining; and setting realistic goals, then taking action. Employers and employees will welcome this "window" into how to succeed in the business world. Oh yes, this author writes about work-related stress. After you read this book, take a look at "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff for Teens", by Dr. Richard Carlson. It has keys to success for everyone not just teens; and coping with stress is a universal challenge. What is your Adversity Quotient?
AQ Intro for High Performance at Work.......2000-11-18
'AQ@Work' is aimed at consultants, students, or those in business who want to create a structured reaction mindset (initially consciously incompetent, to unconsciously competent) to performing better individually and in teams in the workplace.
The attractively illustrated action-oriented chapters span: Expanding your capacity- the human operating system (Quitters, Campers & Climbers); The science of AQ; Measuring Your AQ; The CORE of a climber (Control, Ownership, Reach, Endurance); Developing Response-Able Climbers (LEAD= Listen to Response, Establish Accountability, Analyze the Evidence, and Do Something); Coaching and Mentoring Climbers; Defining and Finding Climbers; Hiring Climbers; Building Climbing Teams; Building A Climbing Culture.
Strengths include: the presentation (illustrations, tables, summaries, action lists); the lively engaging style; interesting "humans as computers with software" analogies; the usability of materials for in-company training; and the credibility of AQ itself (data set and application group spanning over 100,000 people Worldwide across cultures, sectors, and professions).
Weaknesses include: the lack of references; a need more anecdotes or tabulated quantified success stories (rather than repetitive, almost consulting sales pitch); needs 25% less page count for content; dull 2nd half becomes a "verbatim training notes doc" (to this reviewer); lack of depth to "science" (e.g. misses many credible individual/ team motivation/performance models e.g.2 misses communications models & significance to team performance); offers unsubstantiated contradictions with standard psychology view to internalizing/ externalizing problems and subsequent personal growth (or not); and anecdotes sometimes abstract/remote from complexities of real work environments. Interestingly, Cypress Semiconductor is hailed here as a success story, and as a failure in Pfeffer's recent OK "Hidden Value" and OK "Knowing Doing-Gap" texts.
Alternatives include: Pfeffer's efforts; Goleman's OK "Working with Emotional Intelligence"; and Schwartz's inspirational "Magic of Thinking Big". At the "quality-end" look at: the superb "First to the Future- on Active Leadership" by Willi Railo (rigorous proven methods to coach & lead Olympic-standard people, applicable to all) (ISBN82-991169-5-3 Norbok A/S 1995); and Jensen's punchy 'Simplicity' (ISBN 073820210X 2000). More peripherally look at: "The Time Management PocketBook" and "Yoga for Dummies" offering approaches for motivation, focus, and action to being better balanced as well as corporate citizens.
Overall 'AQ@Work' is only worthwhile- but it could be amongst the best with more rigor & science, less words, and more success statistics.

Book Description
Developments in Geographic Information Technology have raised the expectations of users. A static map is no longer enough; there is now demand for a dynamic representation. Time is of great importance when operating on real world geographical phenomena, especially when these are dynamic. Researchers in the field of Temporal Geographical Information Systems (TGIS) have been developing methods of incorporating time into geographical information systems. Spatio-temporal analysis embodies spatial modelling, spatio-temporal modelling and spatial reasoning and data mining. Advances in Spatio-Temporal Analysis contributes to the field of spatio-temporal analysis, presenting innovative ideas and examples that reflect current progress and achievements.
Book Description
This monograph presents a comprehensive description of the theoretical foundations and experimental applications of spectroscopic methods in plasma physics research. The first three chapters introduce the classical and quantum theory of radiation, with detailed descriptions of line strengths and high density effects. The next chapter describes theoretical and experimental aspects of spectral line broadening. The following five chapters are concerned with continuous spectra, level kinetics and cross sections, thermodynamic equilibrium relations, radiative energy transfer, and radiative energy losses. The book concludes with three chapters covering the basics of various applications of plasma spectroscopy to density and temperature measurements and to the determination of some other plasma properties. Over one thousand references not only guide the reader to original research covered in the chapters, but also to experimental details and instrumentation. This will be an important text and reference for all those working on plasmas in physics, optics, nuclear engineering, and chemistry, as well as astronomy, astrophysics and space physics.

Book Description
Spectrophysics shows how observations of atomic and molecular spectra can be related to the environment of the emitting or absorbing particles, with particular applications to astrophysics, plasma physics and atmospheric physics. The first part of the book describes the relations between the structure of atoms and simple molecules and their spectra, including complex atoms, which are not normally covered in introductory texts. The second part treats the effects of temperature, density, pressure, collisions with other particles, and so on. Much of this material is normally found only in specialized texts on astrophysics or plasma physics. The experimental methods of optical spectroscopy, from the mid-infrared to the far-ultraviolet regions, are described and compared in the last part of the book with a final chapter addressing such practical matters as wavelength and intensity calibration and signal-to-noise ratios.

THEY ALL CAME TO BAGHDAD EXCEPTED POIROT AND MRS. MARPLE.......2007-05-23
THEY CAME TO BAGHDAD was first published in 1951. This book could surprise the lambda reader who only read a couple of Agatha Christie books featuring Hercule Poirot or Mrs. Marple because THEY CAME TO BAGHDAD is pre-eminently a thriller with a non negligible dose of English humour in it. This reader could also be astonished by the quality of the descriptions of Baghdad and his surroundings written by an author not particularly well-known by his propensity to write long pages of description. If he is curious enough to read a few pages of Agatha Christie autobiography, he'll learn that Agatha Christie and her husband Max Mallowan, an archaelogist, spent, after the end of WWII, long months in Iraq digging and hollowing. Hence, the meticulous descriptions found in this book I've enjoyed very much. Recommended.
A book for the curious ones.
My all-time favorite.......2006-10-01
Absolutely the most enjoyable AC novel I've ever read (and I've read almost all of them). It's got all the elements of an over-the-top spy novel, but with the flair for psychology and setting of Agatha Christie. It's great escapist entertainment, and the description of Baghdad as it once was (and probably never will be again) is not to be missed.
What a Sight it must have been!.......2005-09-21
Mysteries usually keep you sitting on the edge, wondering who the guilty person is. In this case, I sat on the edge, wondering what I would find around the next corner in this magical and exotic place called Iraq. Reading this book, I actually forgot what horrors were going on in this enchanted land, and while I was mentally in that land, I found myself wanting to come back again, not just to meet the characters in "They Came to Baghdad", but to see the old hotels, the tea rooms, the Tigris as it flowed to meet the Euphrates. I no longer cared whether the main characters loved each other or simply wanted to take advantage of each other.
If you like mysteries, I think you'll like this one. If not, I think you'll appreciate just being there in Baghdad prior to the horrors we see on nightly news. Either way, it's worth the small price of the book, or a trip to your library.
Young adventuress off to see the world.......2005-07-02
This 1951 novel is highly reminiscent of some of Christie's earlier works like THE MAN IN THE BROWN SUIT or the Tommy and Tuppence adventures as well as similiarities to the later PASSENGER TO FRANKFURT. None of Christie's usual detectives like Poirot or Miss Marple appear, nor does it follow her usual 'cozy' formula.
The story opens with Victoria Jones finding herself once again between jobs. It seems that Victoria is not very good at her job of shorthand/typist but what she lacks in clerical skills she makes up for in her skill at lying. While sitting in the park considering her options she meets a charming young man who is just perfect except that he is leaving for Baghdad shortly. Victoria soon decides that this young man is the one for her at sets out to follow him to Iraq. She overcomes the obstacles of lack of funds and not knowing her young man's last name but soon finds herself involved in a vast international conspiracy.
As always with a Christie book the clues are all fairly laid out for the reader to follow but there are many twists and surprises along the way to keep the reader entertained.
This adventure has much in common with Elizabeth Peters works, lots of action, improbable situations and more than a touch of romance.
Imagine Baghdad in the 1950's!.......2005-04-28
With all that's going on in Baghdad today, this book provides much more than just a great Agatha Christie read, it provides insights into what Baghdad was like in the 1950's.
The plot basically revolves around a young lady who follows her love interest from england to Baghdad. While she is there, she gets caught up in an underground network of people out to destroy the world forever.
Interesting imagery and descriptions of Baghdad, the Tigris, and Basrah which are kind of sad when you look at all the violence that has happened in that region since then (Iran/Iraq war, first gulf war, second gulf war).
I really enjoyed it.
Book Description
Inspector Chafik J. Chafik of the Baghdad police was the creation of Charles B. Child (1903-1993), the pseudonym of British author Claude Vernon Frost. As a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Airforce he worked with Military Intelligence in Iraq during the Second World War. Child wrote that Inspector Chafik was a composite of associates whom he met in the Middle East, whose "agile minds" could "wind through a complicated maze."
Beginning in 1947, the Chafik stories were some of the most popular features in Collier's Magazine, and many were reprinted in the annual Best Detective Stories of the Year. The stories about Chafik, his wife Leila, and his adopted son Faisal whom he found on the streets of Baghdad are superlatively constructed exercises in detection, but they have a more subtle level. They are also explorations of a culture and a time and place. The stories begin when the British still influenced Iraqi politics, and continue through the period of the monarchy and the country's attempts to identify its place in the world. Many years ago, Frederic Dannay ("Ellery Queen") lamented that there was no book collection of the Inspector Chafik stories. We are delighted to publish this First Edition.
Customer Reviews:
Moderately Entertaining Stories in an Ugly Package.......2003-03-26
My first instinct on picking up this book was to wonder why a publisher would go to so much trouble to collect and resurrect these stories only to package them so unattractively. The utterly amateurish cover and inside typography detracts a great deal from the enjoyment of the book, which collects 15 of the roughly 34 Inspector Chafik stories published in Colliers, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, and John Bull between 1947 and 1969. Set in post-WWII Iraq, the stories feature a cunning Baghdad police inspector. Drawing on his wartime experience in Iraq, Child created a kind of stereotypical genius inspector who's smarter than everyone else and has those abstract leaps of intuition that are the mark of the brilliant fictional detective. Fortunately, he's not infallible, and in several stories must be rescued by his faithful assistant or his adopted son. In each, there is an initial murder which Chafik tackles, although sometimes he metes out his own form of justice rather than proceeding strictly according to law. The stories need to be read slowly over time, otherwise they tend to blur into each other as the author's style and construction is unvaried throughout. As a portrait of Baghdad, it's occasionally insightful. For example, in the stories Chafik deals with Armenians, Greeks, Sunnis, Shi'ites, city folks, villagers, rich, and poor. In that sense it does a good job of showing the diversity that exists in may Arab cities, but otherwise it's a fairly static and romanticized picture of Baghdad just before rapid modernization hits. Altogether, a moderately diverting collection of old-fashioned stories in an unusual setting.
GREAT COLLECTION.......2002-08-13
Crippen landru continue their LOST CLASSICS series with a great adition, the Child stories. They are good puzzles and will provide a great read in a caracther you probably wont know but will want another collection after reading this one. BUY IT!
