Vichy Law and the Holocaust in France
Richard H. Weisberg Manufacturer: NYU Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0814793363 Release Date: 1998-01-01 |
Book Description
Having learned much from this book, I commend it to readers as first-rate legal history, as a distinguished contribution to the understanding of the Holocaust in France, and also as a cautionary tale. The involvement of Vichy France with Nazi Germany's efforts to exterminate Europe's Jews has long been a source of debate and contention. At a time when France is taking more responsibility for its role in the deportation and murder of 75,000 of its Jewish citizens, Richard Weisberg here provides a comprehensive and devastating account of the French legal system's complicity with Hitler's genocidal campaign during the dark period known as Vichy.
As in Germany, the exclusionary laws passed during the Vichy period formalized institutional anti-semitism. In Vichy Law and the Holocaust in France, Weisberg pulls back the curtain on the ways in which the legal community responded to these laws. Private lawyers quickly absorbed the discourse of religious exclusion into the conventional legal framework, expanding the laws beyond their simple intentions, their literal sense, and even their German precedents. Anti-Jewish laws slipped easily and with little resistance into the legal canon and French lawyers often enlisted the laws as a means of career advancement. Examining the work of lawyers and judges, policy makers and administrators, prosecutors and defenders, reporters and academics, Weisberg reveals how legalized persecution actually operated on a practical level.

Biogeochemical Cycles: A Computer-Interactive Study of Earth System Science and Global Change (Computer-Based Earth System Science Series)
William L. Chameides , and E. M. Perdue Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195092791 |
Book Description
Providing the basic framework for investigating global change and its implications for life on Earth, Biogeochemical Cycles is a comprehensive and accessible examination of this complex and fascinating subject. The opening chapters present the scientific and mathematical fundamentals needed for the study of biogeochemical cycles, such as chemical thermodynamics and differential equations. The remaining chapters investigate the global cycles of the five key nutrient elements -- P, C, N, S, and O -- and examine their mathematical and computer model simulations. The text emphasizes techniques for finding and organizing data on the distribution of elements in the Earth system (including the estimation of missing data), the rational development of box models of biogeochemical cycles, and the uses and limitations of linear numerical models to simulate inherently nonlinear biogeochemical cycles. To give student hands-on experience, the authors have developed a DOS-based computer program entitled BOXES. This program, included with the book, offers a user-friendly environment for constructing numerical models of biogeochemical cycles and avoids detailed numerics. An invaluable teaching tool, BOXES allows students and professors to work interactively in the classroom as each of the cycles is explored, and gives students the opportunity to develop their own scenarios for global change outside the classroom.

A "classic of the first water" - strange stuff indeed.......2003-07-04
"NOW WE had been five days in the boats, and in all this time made no discovering of land. Then upon the morning of the sixth day came there a cry from the bo'sun, who had the command of the lifeboat, that there was something which might be land afar upon our larboard bow; but it was very low lying, and none could tell whether it was land or but a morning cloud. Yet, because there was the beginning of hope within our hearts, we pulled wearily towards it, and thus, in about an hour, discovered it to be indeed the coast of some flat country."
No hint of what fate befell the Glen Carrig - we are swept immediately into unknown lands, filled with, as H.P. Lovecraft wrote, a "variety of malign marvels".
Hodgson's strengths are his personal familiarity with the sea and his ability to create an atmosphere of creeping dread, of the nearness of forces of unknown potency and hostility to humanity. He considered three of his novels ("The House on the Borderland", "The Boats of the Glenn Carrig", and "The Ghost Pirates") to be essentially parts of the same tale. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, but there is a unifying thread of the intrusion into the everyday world of non-human entities bent soley on the destruction of the principle characters. In "The Boats of the Glen Carrig", Hodgson expands the territory of his short stories to novel length. Familiar elements are all there - the ship stranded in the Sargasso, the strange things seen at sea, and the eventual attack by monstrous forces. Unfortunately, also present is a mawkish romance and an attempt at "archaic" language that, while nowhere near as tiresome as that in "The Nightland", still wears on the modern reader. BUT!! Don't let that put you off! I know of NO other writer, not Lovecraft, nor Machen, nor Blackwood, who can create and sustain an atmosphere of creeping dread, the sense of horrors *just* out of sight. Very highly recommended.

In "The Boats of the Glen Carrig", Hodgson expands the territory of his short stories to novel length. Familiar elements are all there - the ship stranded in the Sargasso, the strange things seen at sea, and unearthly beings whose origins and motivations are never to be known. The first half of the book is especially unnerving - the "flat country" introduced in the opening is so terrifying that the men flee to take their chances on the open see rather than remain in the presence of the bizarre manifestations therein. Unfortunately, like so much of Hodgson's longer works, the second half drifts into sentimentality and, to modern sensibilities, pure mushiness. Ah, well....
Still, nothing this strikingly original has been written in many years. Hodgson definitely had his own voice and vision, and the pity is that he died in the trenches of WWI before true maturity came to his writing. The world is poorer for that, but at least we have four novels and many many short stories from this talented writer. Highly recommended.
