Few contemporary issues question the nature of life and death, families and communities, altruism and self-interest, and individual rights and public good as dramatically as does organ donation and transplantation.
Transplantation raises profound and intriguing concerns about the interplay of medical needs, state authority and bodily integrity. Although advances in medical technology and the development of immunosuppressant drugs have made transplantation an almost routine procedure in many parts of the world, the actual availability of transplantable organs remains inadequate to the need. Accordingly, various strategies and policies are in force to increase the supply of organs.
In this edited volume, Bethany Spielman includes selected papers from a 1995 conference cosponsored by the Department of Medical Humanities of the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and the Live and Learn Organ Donation Awareness Program of the Illinois Secretary of State. Seventeen distinguished experts from the fields of bioethics, medicine, law, history, philosophy, and public policy consider questions integral to the foundations and operations of organ donation in the 1990s: To what extent is policy guided by law, cultural notions of gift giving, scientific facts, or political interests? How should organs be obtained and from whom? What should be the role of financial incentives? Do existing frameworks and protocols in medical centers and surgical suites sufficiently protect and respect living and cadaver donors? Can donations be increased to meet growing demand? Is there a right to refuse donation?
The essays explore a range of specific issues: Third World violation of rights and the "theft" of organs, proposed and proven remedies for the shortage of organs, the unique ethical issues relating to donations by children, the recently rescinded American Medical Association decision to approve harvesting of organs from anencephalic infants, and apparent inequities in national and global allocation.
This book should be enlightening for practicing clinicians, bioethicists, students, policy analysts, and others interested in the technological and ethical impacts of medicine on society.

This book is a collection of papers concerned with the processes and products of magma-sediment mingling and the origin of peperite. Three papers are concerned with physical modelling of magma-wet sediment interaction, whereas the majority of the papers describe a wide variety of peperite compositional and textural types, and discuss controls on their formation. The first paper reviews the current understanding of peperite generation, and serves as an extended introduction to the volume.
Peperite is a common rock type generated in many volcanic and sub-volcanic environments. Its study is important for several reasons. Correct identification of peperite is critical in palaeoenvironmental reconstruction and relative chronology, as its presence can demonstrate contemporaneity of volcanism and sedimentation. Peperite may also record a snapshot of the processes that occur prior to hydromagmatic explosions, and which are otherwise not preserved in the resulting deposit. Its study can therefore provide information on the factors and mechanisms that influence the likelihood of such hazardous explosions. Peperite also indicates the presence of syn-volcanic sills that may be important sources of heat and/or fluids for co-eval hydrothermal systems.

This is for those who love that dry English humor. I love this book! It mocks so beautifuly stupidities, naivete, and human anxietes. If you like slap stick humor, please look somewhere else.
An acquired taste, but fun satire.......2001-11-04
This book contains a collection of ironically satirical essays. Satire is not my favorite form of humor, so it took me a few essays to get "into the swing" of the book, but I can say that once I came around to the appropriate frame of reference, I quite enjoyed the book. When reading this book, you must also remember that it was originally published in 1910; the humorous themes of the essays have aged well, but some of the settings have not.
As I read the essays, I kept having the nagging thought that the author's style reminded me of a contemporary author. Once I reached the "How to Make a Million Dollars" essay, it hit me: I would not hesitate to call Stephen Leacock the Dave Barry (Miami columnist and author) of the early 1900s. They both have the same sort of perverse logic to their points of view. Thus, if you can picture Dave Barry writing in the early 1900s, you can get some idea of what reading this book of essays would be like.
A wonderful mixture of comedy, nonsense and compassion.......2000-11-21
Stephen Leacock was a Canadian author who wrote his works with an optimistic yet realistic view of life. His light-hearted, bubbly diction impressed me all the way through the novel. Each short story was unique and had true-to-life situations and entertaining characters to whom readers of all ages can relate. His stories are full of good advice for everyone from the socially elite, eager-to-please teenager to the hard-working businessman to the overprotective father. Leacock exaggerates in many of his sketches, but that aspect of each story fits in perfectly with the separate ideas he presents. I recommend this novel to anyone who agrees that life should be lived to the absolute fullest, taking all chances and having a good time. As Stephen Leacock says, "Eat what you want. Eat lots of it. Yes, eat too much of it. Eat till you can just stagger across the room with it and prop it up against the sofa." (Leacock Literary 31)

As usual in Curry's work, the presence of the sea and the city is keenly felt and connected to the psychological action of the story.

Book Description
