This book shoold be in everybody's library. It is helpful, informative and full of information for anyone on a career path and wants better relationships. You will never be the same again. It is both innovative and interactive! A beautifully produced work.

Good for soul searching beginners........1999-08-09

As a career counselor at a local school I am always looking for new and innovative approaches to career exploration. This kit was interesting and really used a unique method for inviting the reader to take a hands-on approach to career and self development. Not really much new for many of us who have read a great deal of self-help material, pretty much says what I have already heard. I really liked how it focued on finding a good match for your personality type, good way to promote job satisfaction and retention. Pretty good material - a bit over priced.

Otterbourg entertains and informs us by presenting fifty anecdotes of live people organized around eight major retirement issues, e.g., careers, planning and volunteerism. This book helps us answer the question, what will I do if I retire? It is a wonderful companion to a book on financial planning for retirement.

Practical advice and anecdotes.......2006-10-27

An earlier edition of the Otterbourg book helped me to sort out my own retirement plans. His mix of practical advice and anecdotes from successful retirees gave me the confidence to consider stepping out on my own to pursue, independently, my lifelong interests in writing and photography. Otterbourg's book is full of down-to-earth stuff, written from the perspective of someone who also once decided to make the leap, and fleshed out with a wide variety of stories from other thriving retirees. A thoughtful take on what ought to be on the minds of those of us considering retirement.

As an Executive Coach I have often referred to and recommended to many of my clients that they read Retire and Thrive. Most have done what I suggested and their feedback to me was very positive.
Many of my clients are in their late forties and fifties and even though they hold demanding jobs, they are always thinking about their third third of life after their corporate careers end. They know that there are another twenty to thirty years ahead of them where they need to create a valid reason to get out of bed every morning with some enthusiasm. Retire and Thrive has been a source of information and inspiration to so many of them as they ponder both their present and their future. The book has been just as useful to me personally as it has been to my clients.

Real world guidance for real world challenges.......2003-11-26

I found Otterbourg's Retire and Thrive a wonderfully refreshing change from all the career and life advice books. Easy to read. I felt like he and the people he profiled were sitting in my living room simply chatting with me about their experiences. His profiles of people who have "been there" gave real world suggestions. Reading the book was like having two dozen mentors offering guidance about how to deal with real world challenges.

I especially liked the profiles that told why the person made the life changes they made...some of the changes were forced on them (downsizing, illness, etc.) but even more often they chose the changes and had the courage take the big step.

Highly recommend Retire and Thrive. Also, should be part of any career counselor's library on any educational level. Good example to young people that life isn't over at 30, 40, 50 or beyond.

Otterbourg's book Retire and Thrive (3rd Ed.)is a very useful and enjoyable read for anyone planning for retirement or only dreaming about its eventuality. It includes personal stories of people who have left both jobs and "lifework" and have pursued other wonderful endeavors. I loved this book and all the real life examples. It is indeed a good book, but if you are trying to find something really practical try SNAME's PNA - Principles of Naval Architecture.

How to shrink fluid dynamics!!.......2003-08-15

This book tells you almost everything you need to know about ship hydrodynamics, but you can't really shrink this argument into 300 pages!!
The book is mainly descriptive, if you're looking for an insight in the mathematical (painful) aspect of fluid dynamics, this book is not for you.
Anyway, there are few codes, written by the author, you can download.
Mainly the boolk talks about the flow about a ship, the ship manouvering and the propeller. Per each argument the main problems are addressed. At the end of the book there is a part dedicated to the developing of a panel code.
Good book, maybe overpriced.

Practical Ship Hydrodynamics.......2002-06-12

This book summarize all what is needed to understand the basics of ship hydrodynamics. This a good support for teaching up to PhD level. I should have liked to write this book.

Fine stuff.......2001-09-12

This book is what I would have liked to have earlier for my
lectures. In spite of being comprehensive, it gives not only
a good overview about the physics and current computational
methods of the various fields of ship-related hydrodynamics,
but contains also a host of valuable ideas which are not well
known, and it concentrates on the important aspects within
each field. Many exercises show how to apply the facts and
methods to practical problems.

A difficulty relates to viscous flow computations: Here specific
methods for naval architecture are hardly required; thus this
field is handled superficially only. For all other topics I
know of no other book of comparable quality.

Modern ship hydrodynamics..........2001-07-24

Quite often, in the field of ship design "practical" means oversimplification of the problem, bounding ship design to a sort of empirical art. This is not the case! This book, lively written with a nice balance between the description of the relevant physics and the rigorous mathematical foundation of the problems, leads the reader to approach ship design by sophisticated, though still feasible, methods. I think is a wonderful teaching tool!

PhD students will find a large number of useful references.

Finally, not of minor importance, it can be used by well trained naval architects to get quickly a basic understanding of modern CFD tools, their importance and limits.

Using science to understand baseball.......2000-11-21

When asked if he was an athlete, a recently retired professional baseball player replied, "No ma'am, I'm a ballplayer." However, as this book clearly shows, if the question was, "Are you a practicing applied physicist?," the answer would have to be yes. While fascinating to read, this work points out how little science has contributed to the understanding of the game. And given that baseball is a billion dollar industry, this is surprising.
The most interesting and astounding point made throughout the book is that to play baseball you must reason very quickly with estimates. For example, it is impossible for the human eye to track the path of a pitch thrown in excess of 90 miles per hour. To track a ball moving at 100 miles per hour as it crosses home plate, the body must respond at a rate in excess of 1000 degrees per second. And yet, studies are consistent in showing that the human limit is on the order of 90 degrees per second. It turns out that batters loose track of the ball as it nears them and extrapolate the data to actually hit it. Students lost sight of the ball when it was 9 feet away from them and professionals when it was 5.5 feet away. The absolute limit is on the order of 5 feet.
The explanation of why a pitch will curve and what makes a knuckleball dance are truly works of art. And the physics of the best choice of bat in case you actually hit it should be required reading for all those who think they know baseball, players included. All are done using equations and example numbers rather than text. It is gratifying to find authors who ignore the adage about sales declining in direct proportion to the number of equations.
Science and mathematics teaching is often(justly) criticized for lacking practicality. Well, what could be more practical than teaching someone to hit a baseball? This is one of those books where learning is fun. It could be used as a textbook for any course that deals with the physics of motion and force. And if class gets boring, you can always go out and hit a few.
