This book was primarily written for an audience that has heard about neural networks or has had some experience with the algorithms, but would like to gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental material. For those that already have a solid grasp of how to create a neural network application, this work can provide a wide range of examples of nuances in network design, data set design, testing strategy, and error analysis.

Computational, rather than artificial, modifiers are used for neural networks in this book to make a distinction between networks that are implemented in hardware and those that are implemented in software. The term artificial neural network covers any implementation that is inorganic and is the most general term. Computational neural networks are only implemented in software but represent the vast majority of applications.

While this book cannot provide a blue print for every conceivable geophysics application, it does outline a basic approach that has been used successfully.

Optical waveguide analysis is becoming both popular and indispensable in the design of various optical devices at a small cost of time and labour. Development of circuit simulators, which are common in electronic and microwave-circuit design in industries, is still required for optical integrated circuits.

This book is the first to present the comprehensive treatments of numerical analysis of optical waveguides and circuits, and is the summary of the research investigations made at Hosei University, Japan. It will also provide some powerful numerical techniques for a design tool of optical circuits.

This is a really nice book. I think it covers everything you need to know about BPM. I also recommend Kawano's waveguide analysis book.

Well worth having.......2003-09-09

This slender volume attempts to present, as the preface says, a detailed review of the most important numerical analysis techniques for calculating modes and beam propagation in optical waveguides and fibers. If that's what you're after and you're not already expert in this area, it's well worth buying. The authors are both long-time practioners of these arcane arts in major Japanese firms, and it shows. On the other hand, it was originally written in Japanese and the authors are industrial researchers, not teachers; and to some extent that shows also. But I'm glad to have it, haven't encountered anything better in this area, and have no hesitation in recommending it.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In this thesis, the ocean was modeled as a wave-guide with an ideal pressure - release surface, and an ideal rigid bottom. The ocean wave-guide was then treated as a linear, time - invariant, space - variant (TISV) filter or communication channel. The filter is time - invariant because no motion was modeled and because the properties of the ocean were assumed to be constant. The filter is space variant because of the presence of the two boundaries, that is, the ocean surface and ocean bottom. This thesis investigates the ocean as a linear TISV filter by evaluating 1) the complex frequency response, 2) the impulse response, and 3) the transfer function of the ocean with respect to depth. It is shown that the TISV impulse response of the ocean contains information that can be used to help localize a target in range and whether the target is above or below the receiver. Computer simulation results were obtained by evaluation the three filter functions for several different test cases.

This is a good text for microwave and integrated optics engineering. The applications for planar and channel optical waveguides added the optical fibers studies are of greate technologycal importance. The introduction to the nonlinear problems and the quantum well structures close this book to the more recent areas on numerical simulations with optical waveguide applications

A comprehensive but practical analysis methodology for treating optical fibre waveguides is presented in this book. It is designed for both college students and practicing scientists and engineers. The book presents a framework which treats the light waveguide as a continuum of polarizing
devices, to which a multitude of analysis techniques are applied. A more rigorous but easy-to-grasp mathematical arrangement is developed in Parts II and III, for analyzing an all di-electric or metallic, 1D or 2D optical stratum. This basic technique is extended in Part IV to cover a general 2D or
3D curved optical fibre waveguide for which both the propagative and radiative far-field distributions, together with a set of characteristic equations and their solutions, are established. Similar to these simplified straight or curvilinear guidance structures, an elliptic waveguide or a fibre with
the D-shaped cladding, may be characterized analytically, but approximately, as demonstrated in Part V. Also included in Part V is the so-called finite element analysis as a distinctive alternative numerical computation method for analysing a more arbitrary fibre waveguide exhibiting an obvious
irregularity or anisotropy.
