Is there a better "getting started" book for investing?.......2000-06-25
Is there a better "getting started" book on the subject of investing? I don't think so.
Train explores the forces working against the accumulation and preservation of wealth - taxes, inflation, and the 'herd instinct.' He offers practical advise on how to defend against these forces; indeed, he teaches the reader how to use them to his advantage.
That this book was written in the early 1980s only makes it more remarkable. Train predicts the macro-economic factors that built the Japanese bubble economy, and its subsequent downfall. A reader who took Train's lessons to heart could have predicted the go-go tech market of late 1999, and would know how to have played it.
It's important that you read this book. There are no fancy techniques, no magic formulas. The laws that make people (and markets) function are laid out. Understanding how markets work will make you rich. Understanding how people and their governments act will help you keep your wealth. Mr. Train has written a classic.

The classification of igneous rocks used in the book is the one proposed by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) Subcommission of the Systematics of Igneous Rocks. A list of commonly used rock names--many not part of the IUGS classification--is keyed to this classification. Also, the widely used Irvine- Baragar classification of volcanic rocks is included. Dr. Philpotts has organized a large amount of information to be easily and rapidly accessible. He provides students with a concrete foundation, giving them experience and confidence as they encounter the field of petrography.

Aristotle, great Greek philosopher, researcher, reasoner, and writer, born at Stagirus in 384
BCE, was the son of Nicomachus, a physician, and Phaestis. He studied under Plato at Athens and taught there (367-347); subsequently he spent three years at the court of a former pupil, Hermeias, in Asia Minor and at this time married Pythias, one of Hermeias's relations. After some time at Mitylene, in 343-2 he was appointed by King Philip of Macedon to be tutor of his teen-aged son Alexander. After Philip's death in 336, Aristotle became head of his own school (of 'Peripatetics'), the Lyceum at Athens. Because of anti-Macedonian feeling there after Alexander's death in 323, he withdrew to Chalcis in Euboea, where he died in 322.
Nearly all the works Aristotle prepared for publication are lost; the priceless ones extant are lecture-materials, notes, and memoranda (some are spurious). They can be categorized as follows: I Practical: Nicomachean Ethics; Great Ethics (Magna Moralia); Eudemian Ethics; Politics; Economics (on the good of the family); On Virtues and Vices. II Logical: Categories; Analytics (Prior and Posterior); Interpretation; Refutations used by Sophists; Topica. III Physical: Twenty-six works (some suspect) including astronomy, generation and destruction, the senses, memory, sleep, dreams, life, facts about animals, etc. IV Metaphysics: on being as being. V Art: Rhetoric and Poetics. VI Other works including the Constitution of Athens; more works also of doubtful authorship. VII Fragments of various works such as dialogues on philosophy and literature; and of treatises on rhetoric, politics and metaphysics.
The Loeb Classical Library edition of Aristotle is in twenty-three volumes.

Like most volumes in the Loeb series, the emphasis is not on word-for-word precision in the translation, but on acheiving greater readability in broader terms. Since the original text in ancient Greek is provided on the facing page, the editors assume that anyone with a little knowledge of Greek can supplement the looseness of the translation by referring to the original. And in general, the compromises made in this way are good ones throughout the series. In this case, perhaps, the translation may be a little too loose, and also given over to some unfortunate jargon that can distort Aristotle's meaning. But even so, this is still a very useful text for the specialist or the student.

Most Comprehensive I've Read.......1999-05-15
Just fininshing up a history term paper here for my major, and I thought I'd drop off a good word for the best secondary source on Sappho's life and work that I've ever seen. Ms. Williamson leaves no rock unturned, no aspect of Sappho's work or life unaddressed, and manages to do it in an entertaining and comprehensive way without running into 500 pages! If you are interested in Sappho at all beyond the text of her extant poetry, this is the book to buy!

Discussion of the interaction between tourism and conservation needs. Informative, uses lots of information, good list of sources if looking to find a greater base to learn about this topic. Could have gone slightly more in depth into case studies, rather than broad trends or shallow discussions of certain areas. Moderately good proposals as to solutions for some of the problems tourism poses the environment.
