Was a valuable behavior guide for me........1998-03-05

I enjoyed reading Civil War in the American Workplace, regarding the nature and interplay of different behavorial profiles at work. In clear passages sprinkled with keen insights and humor, the example of human relations profiled became so familiar and informative.
The metaphor of the battlefield is particularly apt for illustrating the points throughout the book. It reminds us that the concept of business strategy evolved from the study of war, and that those who contribute most to the success of any strategy -- the people employed in the organization -- derive their roles and behaviors from the same tradition. Whether one's battles are fought with real soldiers or toy ones, the book's engaging analysis will be a valuable guide to each reader.

Civil War in the American Workplace by Dr. Linda Rosene sheds light on why there is conflict, turmoil and disagreement between individuals and groups. The primary focus is work situations. However, it is applicable to all aspects of human interaction.
Differences in individuals can be viewed as a drawback. "Why can't everyone be like me...this would be a perfect world." Dr. Rosene shows another side to this thought.
Behavior traits can be suppressed, beaten, bent but not changed. Dr. Rosene demonstrates how people can and do put effort into beating or bending. On the other hand, we can recognize behavior and effectively channel it to where people are comfortable and productive at work. When this occurs, employees attain an acceptable degree of satisfaction. When the job fits the employee, turnover is not a problem.
Behavior is predictable. Once we realize this, we are a step closer to recognizing our behavior and that of others. Differences may result in conflicts or they can be nurtured and turned into opportunities where they can be complimentary. The empowered don't resent differences; they realize that differences are necessary to achieve growth and the consequences that accompany it. Dr. Rosene demonstrates the four personality characteristics in an effective analogy supported bypractical examples. She paints a picture to help the reader identify the players and understand that conflict doesn't have to be the natural consequence.

Daniel Strachman's Getting Started in Hedge Funds is a poorly written, remarkably uninspiring piece of work. Instead of actually talking about "getting started in hedge funds" - the author spends most of his time sketching profiles of the different players involved in the hedge fund industry. I'd venture to say this book offers almost nothing of value to anyone who spends even a minute or two per week perusing financial news and information. Not recommended.

This book contains way too much fluff. However, I did enjoy the fund manager profiles toward the end of the book.

Steer clear of this book. The writing sub-par and there is very little substance in this book. Getting Started in Hedge Funds reads much like a 200 page USA Today article.

The book is predominately a desultory history of the hedge fund industry and offers very little information about specific hedging strategies. Additionally, the bit of history that it does offer does not go beyond 1999. So we do not even get to see how the industry weathered the recession and 9/11 attacks.

The book is a very basic overview of hedge fund industry developments. It is important to note that the history stops at 1999 and that there have been a number of significant industry developments since then. As other reviewers have correctly pointed out, the most interesting aspect of the book is the short articles from fund managers who have started their own funds with as little as $1 million in assets under management.
For those seeking a greater insight into the risk management techniques employed by hedge funds, or the basic "How to's" of starting a fund....this is not the book for you.

A good book for people who want to learn about Hedge Funds.......2003-02-25

I have been looking for a book on hedge funds that is to the point, concise, easy to understand and grasp and I finally found it in Getting Started In Hedge Funds. The book provides a unique look at where hedge funds came from, how the industry evolved and gives insightful information about managers. The profiles are very interesting and provide a unique look at how money is managed. It is easy to read and worthwile for anyone who wants to learn more about these types of investment vehicles.
