5 out of 5 stars A must read for everybody.......2005-03-23

This may be a life changing book. The rules are simple. Do not try the unusual to get ahead. Be extremely good at your work and follow the conventions of the workplace. Advancement most often takes time, is not a quick jump up the ladder by calling attention to yourself.

5 out of 5 stars The real story of how to get ahead.......2002-12-14

This book is an unknown classic. It tells the real way to get ahead in a large bureaucracy. Most of the Tom Peters type books on success in business deal with the 2 percent of companies that are run by a great, innovative leader. The other 98% are the real world in which many frustrated managers create mini-fiefdoms where they yield power and stifle productivity. This book is funny but it provides real insights into how to navigate up the ladder of business. I have a MBA and have read many of the top inspirational business books and this is the best, most practical book on how to get ahead in the real world that I have read. It is a one of a kind, I strongly recommend it. The author is a Ph.D who worked for the Ford Motor Company. Very funny.

4 out of 5 stars Smart Cards - The Technology of the Future (still).......2000-06-17

This book has everything that you may need to know about smart cards. It contains a series of well-written in-depth articles by the experts in the field. Smart cards are the technology of the future -- and they may remain that way. The previous review predicts a smart card revolution for the year 2000. Here it is. Y2K has come and gone. Where are my smart cards? The reality is that the most pervasive use of smart cards has come about by government directive. The King of France has decreed that you cannot use a phone without having a smart card. Much touted experiments for smart card use in the United States have been failures. These include smart card electronic purses for the Atlanta Olympics and for Manhattan. It may just be that smart cards are not a compelling technology.

4 out of 5 stars How Smart are Smart Cards?.......1997-11-03

Smart cards are poised to invade two billion wallets and purses by the year 2000. If you have a credit card, chances are it will have a spider-like chip holding all your essential data. Even your mobile phone uses a smart card. But there are more applications to come, and with it diverse business opportunities for the organisation or individual who is always looking ahead. Smart Cards, edited by Catherine Allen and William Barr with Ron Shultz, breaks the mindset of looking at smart cards merely as an electronic purse. It expounds on the many possibilities that this wafer-thin chip-in-a-card can do to revolutionise the finance and retail sector. In short, it talks about smart-card technology. But don't just take it from me or any of the authors--arrive at your opinion from the cast of major players in the smart-card industry that the authors have assembled. Besides streamlining commercial transactions, the smart card will also have a hand in decentralising the storage of personal information. Hospitals will be able to access a patient's medical history just by reading the individual's smart card, thereby saving precious time in an emergency. At the airport, the smart card will make queues at the check-in counter disappear as travellers can check in electronically with their cards. Besides focusing on the application benefits of smart cards, this book also addresses the stumbling blocks of electronic commerce, namely privacy and security issues. A whole section of the book is catered not only to the issues of privacy but also the existing technologies to counter this problem. Innovative business individuals interested in leap-frogging ahead will benefit most from this book as it forces you to re-think standard business models in electronic commerce. Smart Cards also provides fertile ground for new smart-card applications because it showcases many ongoing trials and pilot projects. My only disappointment with the book is that its research is mainly based on corporations in the United States, a country whose advanced telecommunications infrastructure is actually a disincentive to the adoption of smart-card technology. Europe and some part of Asia, on the other hand, have been more than enthusiastic in their use of smart-card technology, and should be able to offer more real-world insights into the nature of the beast. On the whole, Smart Cards provides a good reading of the pulse of the industry and gets you up to speed with the business opportunities of "intelligent cards" that may soon slim that inch-thick wallet of yours--maybe in more ways than one!

            Book Description

This book is a compilation of techniques and devices for collecting and rearing insects that should appeal to educators as well as professional or amateur entomologists. Insects are easy to collect and raise and have a fascinating array of life histories, which make them great for classroom studies. With minimal space and costs, colonies of insects can be raised in classrooms for use in behavioral and physiological studies. The small size and tremendous reproductive capacity of insects are ideal for ecological studies of dispersion, predation, parasitism and reproduction in compressed timeframes and small areas relative to similar studies of larger organisms. This book explains the various techniques of how to build rearing devices and use insect collecting to stimulate insect exploration.

Anyone with basic hand tools, a little skill, and patience can construct these devices. A materials list, instructions for assembly, construction tips, and photographs are included for each device discussed in the text. Most of them require less than 1 hour assembly time and cost very little because they can be made from recycled items. There is also a review of simple statistics for use in the classroom, and, if appropriate, suggestions for classroom projects including simple statistical analyses.

I wrote this book, while working in Kenya, specifically for teachers in developing countries. The aim was to provide information about adapting teaching methods from the luxurious conditions under which teachers from the industrialised world worked to a climate where resources were scarce and termites, heat and humidity threated a well run laboratory and extreme poverty threatened access to any sort of education. I had learnt that expensive equipment is quite unecessry and that it is classroom and institutional relationships which are important. How I wish that present day politicians would understand that this applies to all government services and turn their attention to the publicising of good practice rather than targets, league tables, choice and all the other distracttions. Incidently, the book retailed at £1.10 p and I received 10p per copy in royalties.

Plato's Forms: Varieties of Interpretation is an ambitious work that brings together, in a single volume, widely divergent approaches to the topic of the Forms in Plato's dialogues.

5 out of 5 stars Much needed exploration of diverse interpretation of Plato.......2005-03-06

This book is an excellent reference point for the philosophy major interested in Plato's thought and an enlightening walk through diversity of interpretation. Its informative introduction initiates the serious philosophy student into Plato's extended influence on the Western Tradition. What folows is a series of the most diverse interpretations of Platonic forms possible. This text is a study of the variety of philosophical investigations that Plato has inspired without disparagement of any single reading; it recognizes the intent of the dialogues in this way. Thus, this text illustrates the literary-philosophic intent of Plato in a way the master would admire. I suggest this text for anyone interested in the debate surrounding Platonic forms and for anyone interested in a comparison of widely different interpretations resulting from literary-philosophic exegesis.

                              Book Description

Although Wilkie Collins is remembered primarily as the best-selling creator of the vogue for `sensation fiction' in the 1860s, he was also prolific in many genres apart from the full-length novel. In particular, he produced a stream of often brillant and original short stories. Adapting the tradition of the Gothic tale of terror, he wrote ghost stories with a distinctively contemporary flavour and also made a major contribution to the newly emerging form of the detective story. This volume has a substantial and informative introduction which places the stories in the context of Collins's career and the Victorian literary scene. It brings together samples of his work from three decades and demonstrates that as a purveyor of mystery, suspense, and the uncanny, as a chronicler of the dark underside of everyday life in the mid-Victorian period, and as a story-teller who quickly seizes the reader's interest and refuses to let go, Collins has few rivals.

Like his novels that captivated readers during the 19th century (and still do today) Wilkie Collins' short stories and novellas were no less compelling. This is a wonderful collection of spooky tales that any Wilkie Collins fan will enjoy on dark and windy evening, or whenever you are in the mood for a great read. "Mad Monkton" is especially chilling. I admit once I started this book I couldn't put it down. A classic compilation from one the best and yet most forgotten writers of the Victorian era.
