Financial planning is a young industry. The International Association of Financial Planning - one of the predecessors to the Financial Planning Association - was formed less than forty years ago. But as the profession's first tier of advisers reaches maturity, the decisions that may be part of transition planning for their firms loom large. A sale? A partner buyout? A merger? No matter what the choice, its viability hinges on one critical issue - the value of the firm. Unfortunately, many advisers - whether veteran or novice - simply don't know the worth of their practice or how to influence it. That's why "How to Value, Buy, or Sell a Financial-Advisory Practice" is such an important book. It takes advisers carefully through the logic and the legwork of coming to a true assessment of one of their most important personal assets?their business. Renowned for their years of experience helping advisers tackle the daunting challenges related to the valuation, sale, and purchase of adviso

            Book Description

This book concerns the most important relationship most people have outside the family: the relationship between an employer and an employee. That relationship is crisscrossed by a complex web of laws and regulations. This book describes those laws in a direct, straightforward fashion.

The New York Employer's Guide provides the "lay of the land" of personnel law and regulations and integrates the state and federal law that is relevant to an employer. Each section of the book attempts to include both the underlying concept and a simple, straightforward rule.

This book is written in small, self-contained sections. The reader does not need to refer to the rest of the chapter, much less the rest of the book, to find information about a topic. Although this method of writing causes some duplication, it more than repays the reader in the efficiency of its use.

The New York Employer's Guide is supplemented at least yearly, and more often if major legislation or court cases require. In order to incorporate updated pages easily, the book is published in a three-ring notebook. The New York Employer's Guide is, and will continue to be, one of the most current employment law books available anywhere in the nation.

"Memo English" is used throughout this book. Whenever possible, the author has avoided terms not found regularly in a newspaper and discussions that would appear out-of-place in a business memo. This book is a non-technical discussion of technical topics.

                          Book Description

This text may be read with profit by 'students' at any stage of their clinical careers. The authors have made no assumptions about any prior expertise in either statistics or medicine. The technical discussions of all the clinical problems have been kept at a level that can be understood by
the lay person, and it is hoped that even non-clinicians (such as patients or others involved in the health service) will find the contents of interest.
As an increasing number of medical schools transfer to a problem-based curriculum, in which clinical trials and basic science are learnt in an integrated manner, there is clearly a need for a biostatistics text which is also motivated by clinical problems. Clinical Biostatistics has been written in
response to this need. In the traditional medical curriculum great stress has been placed on the acquisition of knowledge, and to some extent skills, with little attention being paid to attitudes. This text, however, concentrates on influencing students' attitudes towards the use of evidence and the
appropriate and valid use of statistical inference in clinical medicine. Thus, by using this book students will acquire skills that are useful both for the analysis of their own data (in projects for example) and also for the clinical appraisal of the work of others. In contrast, little attention is
paid to the mere learning of statistical formulae.

The aim of the conference Cyclic Behaviour of Soils and Liquefaction Phenomena was to bring together scientists, engineers and other specialists of cyclic soil behaviour in order to discuss important results and new ideas in this special field of activity. The goal was to pursue more accurate theoretical models, to present new laboratory test results, to demonstrate more powerful and versatile numerical methods for computarised analysis, and to disseminate expertise in design of various problems involving cyclic or dynamics behaviour of soils.

Regular physics texts are extraordinarily heavy and unnecessarily over written. Student needs are only basic and fundamental. This book clearly has students in mind and understands the shortcomings of the general students.

                            Book Description

Literature and the Internet: A Guide for Students, Teachers, and Scholars is the only Internet guide written for those who love and study literature. The book begins with a practical introduction for readers who want help finding, navigating, and using literary sites. Later chapters focus on educational issues such as plagiarism, citation, website evaluation, the use of Internet sites in literature courses, as well as the technical, scholarly and professional issues raised by the advent of the Internet. Finally, the book concludes with a chapter on the cultural implications of the Internet for literary studies.
In addition, the book offers an annotated bibliography of Internet sources (with URLs) that introduces readers to hundreds of sites which they can explore on their own.
Readers need not have a B.A. or even a major in English, and no special training in computer technology and software is necessary. The book explains both the basics of the Internet and sophisticated scholarly issues in simple language.
Ultimately, each Internet user must choose his or her own path through the Internet, but with Literature and the Internet in hand, surfing the net for things literary will be more efficient and satisfying and much less confusing and overwhelming.

4 out of 5 stars Down-to-earth overview of literary studies in Internet Age.......2001-03-01

I was a new student of literary studies and found the texts I was assigned a bit dense and too filled with references to theorists and philosophers that I hadn't studied in years. This book (bought for an assignment) was a nice way to think about the real implications of hypertext on modern literature, yet not need to read too many words like, semiotics, remediation, wreaderly (shudder), etc.

I recommend it as a great supplement to any serious study of the Internet and Literature.

                            Literature and the Internet

In the field of literary studies, people have been creating digitized texts and making concordances for quite some time now. But until the advent of the Web it was difficult to get an overview of criticism and scholarship which was easily available. In fact it's still not easy. As the authors of this excellent guide point out, it remains common for the latest work to be made available only in the form of conventionally printed books and the dinosaur publishing methods of scholarly journals.

But at last the Internet is now making ever more material easily available to us, and it is the purpose of this guide to advise students, teachers, and scholars how to make the most of the opportunity to retrieve it. They start with a general survey of the pros and cons of the Internet for literary studies, quite rightly pointing out that despite all its obvious advantages, there are still many shortcomings:

It has large and obvious gaps, it cannot cover the literary ground as even a moderately well-stocked library can, and it cannot equal the contemporary appeal of a good bookstore.

In fact the differences between books in libraries and texts on the Net are intelligently explored, before we get down to some practical advice on usability. This centres logically enough on using search engines, and they offer an explanation of the different techniques which can be deployed, as well as alerting users to the differences in kind amongst the sources which might be located.

The centre of the book is an extensive list of resources. These are arranged as web site address - in categories ranging from libraries, journals, literary periods, literary criticism, discussion groups and email distribution lists, to individual authors - from Achebe to Zola - and their home pages. Mercifully, these lists are annotated with useful evaluative comments, making clear distinctions between sites which are commercial, fan pages, and the results of scholarly research. It's interesting to note how many of the award-winning sites are the work of dedicated individuals (such as Jack Lynch at Pennsylvania and Mitsuharu Matsuoka in Japan) and departments in little-known colleges in the back of nowhere. Major institutions are noticeably thin on the ground.

I felt reassured that the authors had done their homework, had visited the sites they discuss - and were not frightened of levelling criticism at some quite well known names in the literary establishment. They point out the need for more qualitative evaluation of online resources and web site reviews.

This is followed by advice on the evaluation of sites, including a series of basic questions we can ask on arrival. Is the information accurate? Is it complete? And is there any acknowledgement of the sources being used?

There is also a section for teachers, discussing how computers and the Internet can be used in literary studies, with suggestions (for instance) for hypertext assignments and web essays - though I hope their term 'Webliographies' doesn't catch on.

They consider the nature of electronic texts - from plain ASCII, through the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) and HyperText Markup Language (HTML), and even as far as the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) and Extensible Markup Language (XML). These are only touched on lightly, with their differences briefly explained, but this is a valuable topic to raise in the consciousness of students and teachers, especially in the light of controversies surrounding the form in which commercial electronic books are being issued.

The guide ends with considerations of the theoretical and political connections between literary studies in an era of digitized text - exploring some of the notions raised in recent years by Jay Bolter, George Landow, and J. Hillis Miller. They even have some interesting comments to make on the likely impact of Information Technology on academic careers - including the vexed issue of academic publishing, which must surely be due for major convulsions in the next few years.

Many people have argued that it's now rather pointless issuing printed resource guides which will be quickly outdated. But there is a reason for such publications. The fact is that it's often quicker to locate information in a book, rather than searching through files or favourites using a browser. Certainly, I'm very pleased that this book is on my desk, and I look forward to exploring its suggestions and passing on any gems to my own students - who are currently learning how to write, link, zip, and upload their first web essays.

                              Book Description

Maxwell E. Perkins, famed editor of such literary luminaries as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Zora Neale Hurston, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, and Thomas Wolfe, was a man whose personal and professional lives often intersected. Nowhere is this more evident than in his correspondence with Elizabeth Lemmon, the Virginia socialite who became his long-distance confidante. Despite the platonic nature of their relationship, others realized the intensity of their connection. The letters contained in As Ever Yours, published here for the first time, reveal an epistolary love story-and they provide fresh insights into Perkins the man and Perkins the editor.

Max first met Elizabeth in 1922 at the Perkins home in Plainfield, New Jersey. Immediately drawn to her stark beauty and southern charm, he struck up a correspondence with her that lasted until his death in 1947. As Ever Yours contains 121 of Perkins's letters to Lemmon as well as the 20 extant letters from Lemmon to Perkins; the rest are presumed lost or destroyed. Letters from Fitzgerald and Wolfe also shed light on the pair's dynamic relationship.

The letters make for compelling reading as Perkins details his personal life in New Jersey and Connecticut and his professional life in the New York publishing world. The writers he discovered, edited, and encouraged at Charles Scribner's Sons emerge as endearing and believable characters, brought to life in Perkins's vivid narrative voice. He is witty, self-deprecating, and painterly in his descriptions of people and locales together with the social milieu of his day. Protected by distance, Max used his letter-writing relationship to unburden himself in a way he could not with his coworkers, his authors, or even his wife-and these letters simultaneously highlight his editorial judgment and disclose his private feelings.

Expertly edited by Rodger L. Tarr, As Ever Yours will be important to students and scholars of the history of publishing. The Perkins-Lemmon letters illuminate the thoughts and experiences of the greatest literary editor of the twentieth century.

"When I found these cigarettes you had left I thought at first to keep them as a rememberance. But I am far from needing a rememberance."
-From Max Perkins's first letter to Elizabeth Lemmon, dated 14 April 1922

A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years, concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years, writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry". With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. This particular book is on loan from an Austrian friend, whose two brothers are chefs in Austria.

The book is outlines as follows:
                              1. Introduction: Katarina Schratt
                              2. Cookbook, 1905
                              3. Notes
                              4. Bring Vienna to your table.

Before I review the book, I must say that if you are on a diet, this is not the book for you. I think that you could gain weight just reading this book. However, if you are a fan of good food, especially desserts, WOW what a book!

The first chapter tells about the life of actress Katarina Schratt and her 32-year relationship with the married Franz Joseph I, emperor of Austria and King of Hungary that was arranged by the king's wife. I had never heard of Katarina Schratt, but her life story is fascinating, and well worth a read.

The 1905 Cookbook belonged to Katarina Schratt for use in her own home, and was never meant to be published as a cookbook. If you are a very accomplished cook, you could follow her recipes. Otherwise, just move to the last chapter where the directions are much more detailed.

The modernized versions of the recipes from 1905 cookbook begin on page 132 of the book. These recipes are subdivided as follows:

                              Hors d'Oeuvres
                              Soups
                              Vegetables
                              Main Dishes
                              Egg Dishes
                              Desserts and Pastries

The directions in the modernized recipes are good enough to reproduce reasonable facsimiles of Austrian recipes even without a good knowledge of Austrian cooking. My exposure to Austrian cooking is based mostly on my knowledge of the cooking of Trieste in Italy (which was part of Austrian until 1920). Even with this limited knowledge of Austrian cooking I find the recipes easy to follow.

The book provides recipes for the standards: Spaetzle, Snowballs, Vanilla Crescent Cookies, Gugelhupf, Linzer Torte, Strudel, and Sacher Torte to name a few classics.

Reading this book makes me hungry. The dessert recipes, although a cardiologist's nightmare, are a gastronomic delight.

Overall, I would recommend adding this book to your cooking library if you love good food, history or biography's. The stories about Katarina's life make for a fascinating read. The recipes that she used in 1905 are a nice look into the past. Finally, if you love good food, and particularly dessert, you can't go wrong by adding this book to your cookbook library. I borrowed this book from a friend, but I will be adding a copy to my own library of cookbooks.

                              5 out of 5 stars hungarian cooking.......2001-12-17

While lots of the cooking recepies outdated, the baking recepies still alive. I do not agree with the listings of so many gulash recepies, there are a lot bigger variety of the astro-hungarian cooking. Anyway I do love the book, there are many old treasures can be revived and used in the every day cooking. The baking is an other story. From the cresent recepie I was able to recreate my Grandmother's chesnut filled cresents, which she used to make for every Christmas. The walnut filling is missing some presoaked raisins, or without it the filling will be too dry. The linzer recepie will need more sour cream too, or the dough will be too dry. These are wonderfull old recepies, all should be treasured by all of us.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful culinary guide to Old Vienna.......2000-10-02

This book is fun to read on three levels. First it has a short biography of Katharina Schratt, the close friend and confidant of Emperor Franz Josef in 19th Century Vienna for over 30 years. This is a great story of a relationship that is legendary and inspirational - the original story of the Emperor and the actress. Following this are two completely different but complimentary cookbooks on 19th Century Viennese cooking. One is a translation of recipes used by Schratt and hand-copied into a notebook in 1905. These are brief and somewhat difficult for the modern reader to understand because they were never intended for publication and they are from a different time and place. To help the modern reader 13 pages of notes bring these recipes to life. Yet still, they will challenge all but the most experienced Austrian cooks. The second cookbook is called Bring Vienna to Your Table! and includes modern versions of many of the classic recipes of Old Vienna. In this section you will find all the famous dishes that make Viennese cooking world-renowned: strudel, Linzer torte, gugelhupf, stuffed cabbage, creamed spinach, rice sausages, goulash, tafelspitz, dumplings, spaetzle, and croustades. All the recipes are easy to follow. These are the real thing and not for those on a diet. Treat yourself to a little of Old Vienna and read this book. You may find yourself in the kitchen like I did with my mouth watering and ready to cook.

                                      Book Description

This book examines the trust concepts and institutions which may be employed to ensure that a healthy environment is passed onto future generations. Following initial consideration of the desirability of using the private law mechanism of the trust, and trust funds, for environmental purposes, the book examines the domestic law concepts of private, charitable and public trusts in an environmental context. Attention then turns to the development of the trust concept on the international law plane, with particular focus on the novel concept of an intergenerational trust. Embodying the legal articulation of sustainable development and embracing both intra- and inter- generational equity, it is this form of the trust concept which has the greatest resonance for international environmental law. This book will be of particular interest to academics, students and practitioners of international, comparative and national environmental law and politics.
