This is long overdue, albeit, brief view of a long and lustrous career of a man who never received the accolades in this country that he should have. Many musical luminaries in the world have paid tribute to him, including his friend Miles Davis. This book covers about a 10 year period in his career, mostly in Europe. It details elements of his career and the friends he made while there. There is a section of the book with photographs of many of these frriends and some of his family.. Other members of my family have read the book and found it to be informative and an interesting story of this renowned classical musician who never really attained the kind of fame many of his comtempories received. I recommend it highly if you are looking for an autobiography of a remarkable man and just a small part of his career.

Interrogation and "confession" revealed.......2002-02-19

Although Miranda's Waning Protections is written by a law professor whose primary audience is lawyers or law students, the book is surprisingly accessible to lay readers. The book describes how Miranda v. Arizona (1966) limited police interrogation practices, and how court decisions since then have watered down its original intent. Even for readers lacking a legal background, the account of how the Supreme Court tries to balance law enforcement's interest in obtaining confessions with protecting individuals against abusive interrogation practices is engaging and interesting. And, White explains why Miranda, as interpreted by the current Supreme Court, provides scant protection for individuals subjected to police interrogation.
Several parts of the book provide detailed accounts of police interrogations, the kinds of tactics police interrogators use, and
why these strategies sometimes lead to false confessions.
Some of these accounts, though horrifying, are fascinating reading. In Chapter 12, White provides excerpts from the taped interrogation of Peter Reilly, a teenager accused of murdering his mother, and his subsequent false confession. This really happens, though it happens to read like a TV script.
Chapter 7, "How modern interrogators have adapted to Miranda," shows police strategies that negate the effect of the Miranda warnings. White presents a stark and disturbing picture of exhausted suspects who are interrogated, and sometimes tortured, for hours without intermission. Mentally disabled suspects are tricked into confessing to crimes they didn't commit.
The author provides at least a sketch of some unforgettable
characters who participated in the struggle: Fred Inbau, who
fervently believed that the Interrogation Manuals he wrote for the
police would only result in truthful and fairly obtained confessions; Yale Kamisar, the law professor who eloquently defended the rights of suspects; and the "indefatigable" Paul Cassell who zealously sought to overturn Miranda.
After explaining the problems with Miranda and other cases
governing police interrogation practices, the author proposes some
sensible remedies. Perhaps the most interesting, in its simplicity, is a procedure under which most police interrogations would be video-taped so at least judges will be in a better position to determine whether or not the police have employed abusive practices to obtain a confession and whether the suspect's confession appears to be in fact truthful.

Though he was on board the Bellaconda, he might just as well have been in an airship, or riding along on the back of a donkey, as far as his knowledge, or recognition, of his surroundings went. He seemed to be thinking thoughts far, far away, and he was never without a book--either a bound volume or a note-book. In the former he buried his hawk-like nose.

This story in the original series is not one of the stronger ones, in that there is no "great" invention. To me, one of the greatest strengths in all of the Tom Swift series was the grandiose nature of the inventions. A Mr. Job Titus approaches Tom, seeking his help in blasting a tunnel through the Andes Mountains in Peru. The Titus Brothers Company has been hired by the Peruvian government to blast a long railroad tunnel through the mountains and they have encountered some extremely hard rock. This has slowed them considerably, and they are in danger of falling behind schedule and failing to meet their deadline. Tom agrees to aid them and he travels to the construction site in Peru.
The site is primitive and the workforce is made up of a small number of white overseers and a large number of native laborers. Given the date when the original was written, the natives are lazy and the whites hard working. After some labor difficulties when an entire work gang disappears from the tunnel and some attempts by rivals to sabotage the job, Tom's group triumphs. In their construction, they unearth an entire ancient city that was somehow buried in a hollow space in the mountain. In fact, the proposed location of the railroad tunnel goes right down an arterial road on the edge of the town. This means that no part of the city has to be destroyed for the railroad and Tom's group is saved a large amount of excavating. This was absurd; it is difficult to see how a hollow mountain could somehow grow around a city.
I cannot get excited about this story, the invention of a more powerful explosive is the only new idea and some of the plot lines are very farfetched, even for a Tom Swift story.
