Book Description

California gives employees more legal protection than any other state and sets the pattern for labor laws across the country. As success and satisfaction on the job often determine a person's overall happiness and financial well-being, noted employee rights attorney and "Los Angeles Times" columnist, Don D. Sessions has written an easy-to-read, enjoyable book, filled with practical information and advice about this important area -- the only current book detailing Employee Rights in California.

The book covers a broad range of topics, including discrimination, sexual harassment, whistle-blowing, slander, privacy, unemployment, overtime, bonuses and benefits, broken and fraudulent promises, and recourse. Additional resources provide information about free government programs and other sources of aid.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars No Help.......2002-05-16

This book was no help in learning about California Laws regarding Employee Rights. It is a compilation of simple questions written to the LA Times by readers and minimalistic answers to them that are vague and could be answered using common sense with no background in law.

4 out of 5 stars Practical Advice.......2000-10-01

"Everyone works for someone", a mentor once told me. And at some point in their lives, everyone has a problem at work. As a Human Resources practitioner of many years I know that most employees have no idea of their rights under the law, which often leads to bad decisions. I would recommend this book to anyone who works, as a quick reference and reality check. Chances are their particular issue may be covered; at the very least, the table of contents provides a way for people to categorize, and speak knowledgeably about, their specific issue. True, there is a danger of simplifying complex issues. But most people have no practical guidelines to apply to their working lives. This book provides a first step.

4 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2000-09-20

I found this book to be extremely valuable for understanding myrights as an employee in California. This book was easy to read and organized well. As a future business owner, it also provided helpful insight on how to protect myself and my employees. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs tons of good information, fast.

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money.......2000-05-07

Don Session's book is little more than a "fast-food approach" to legal assistance regarding abuse in the workplace. There are many other fine books on this important topic that will provide considerably greater help to those who have been harmed by their employer. Don't waste your money on this one.

    Book Description

This book contends that the East Asian financial constitution lacks an appropriate infrastructure, resulting in inefficient allocation of high savings and an over-inflated short-term debt market. It goes on to point out that despite high savings, East Asia's dependency on financial centers outside the region is also relatively high, and that there is no strong region-wide network to connect various financial centers in East Asia.

Against this economic background, the contributors make recommendations for the establishment of effective and stable capital recycling in East Asia. The financial intermediary function of the regional financial centers - Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo - is evaluated. Discussion focuses on the issues of building an organic network between the financial markets of major economies in the region and enhancing the future role and function of those regional financial centers. The policy implications of the future development of regional financial markets - based on regional financial networks - that could potentially act as intermediaries between the high savings and productive sectors in East Asia are also examined.

Concentrating on the major issues identified as central to building a new financial market structure in East Asia, this book will be appeal to those with a special interest in Asian studies and financial economics.

4 out of 5 stars Marine Protected Areas: Principles and Techniques for Manage.......2001-07-03

The book covers interesting and useful guide in aspects of marine protected area, from the history of Marine Protected Area (MPA), what to consider and how to select site of MPA to management, enforcement, and building the awareness. I particularly like the chapter that discuss the MPA concept and the importance of getting the community involvement (which will ensure the sustainability of the MPA), also the marine education and interpretation.

I read the book from a library in UK and would like to have one. Unfortunately the quality of this books is shown by its price, which not affordable for me who come from developing countries where the techniques can be put in practice.

This is a book worth reading for those involve in any aspects of marine (and community) issues and/or works in small islands.

        ASIN: 0691006911

        Book Description

This comprehensive introduction to the physics and chemistry of Earth's atmosphere explains the science behind some of the most critical and intensely debated environmental controversies of our day. In it, one of the world's leading experts on planetary environments presents the background necessary to assess the complex effects of human activity on our atmosphere and climate.

Unique in its breadth and depth of coverage, The Atmospheric Environment includes a survey of Earth's climatic history to provide a context for assessing the changes underway today. It is written for--and will be of lasting value to--a varied audience, including not only students but also professional scientists and others seeking a sophisticated but readable introduction to the frontiers of contemporary research on biogeochemistry, depletion of stratospheric ozone, tropospheric air pollution, and climatology.

The book covers both the chemistry and physics of the atmosphere with an account of relevant aspects of ocean science, treats atmospheric science and the climate as an integrated whole, and makes explicit the policy implications of what is known. Its critical account of steps taken by the international community to address the issue of climatic change highlights the challenge of dealing with a global issue for which the political and economic stakes are high, where uncertainties are common, and where there is an urgent need for clear thinking and informed policy. The book also sketches key gaps in our knowledge, outlining where we need to go to fully understand the impact of our actions on the climate.

Thorough, timely, and authoritative, this is the book to consult for answers about some of the thorniest and most pressing environmental questions that we face.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional and thorough.......2003-07-20

I took Mike's class at Harvard and found it fascinating. The book is thorough and extremely clear - when I first opened it I was intimidated by the number and complexity of some of the diagrams but all is explained in the book in short order. The chapters on climate change and urban ozone are particularly interesting. I think this book could easily be read even if you don't have a scientific bent by just skipping some of the more technical work - you don't need to understand the photolysis of ozone to understand smog. I don't know of any other text that applies to so well to a fairly broad audience.
THe only group to whom I would not reccommend this book are serious grad-level atmospheric chemists. This would be a little infantile for that group.

          Book Description

Everyone knows that symmetry is fundamentally important in physics. On one hand, the symmetry of a system is often the starting point for general physical considerations, and on the other hand, particular problems may be solved in simpler and more elegant ways if symmetry is taken into account. This book presents the underlying theories of symmetry and gives examples of their application in branches of physics ranging from solid-state to high-energy physics via atomic and molecular physics. The text is as self-contained as possible, with as much mathematical formalism given as required. The main emphasis is on the theory of group representations and on the method of projection operators, this is a very powerful tool which is often treated only very briefly. Discrete symmetries, continuous symmetries and symmetry breaking are also discussed, and exercises are provided to stimulate the reader to carry out original work.

5 out of 5 stars Keeper Text Book.......2001-12-09

I've been using this book in a career writing class where we have been focusing on learning how to write creative non-fiction. It is a great book full of incredible selections and is a great introduction to the field of Creative Nonfiction. Let me tell you, after years of writing academic essays, this has been a blast. The book, and my instructor, has helped me understand the difference between an autobiography and a memoir or a personal familiar essay and a personal critical essay.

All of that being said, I found this book to be more of an introduction into the world of Creative Nonfiction than an instructional 'how to' book. I have enjoyed being introduced to such a large host of, for me, new writers and will definitely keep this text book for reference, enjoyment, and inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars The Guideline for Creative Non-Fiction.......2000-07-17

Finally the genre of Creative Non-Fiction is gaining recognition as a valid art form. Critics are finally starting to realize what the puplic has always known; real people have valid and intruiging stories to tell. The Fourth Genre collects an overview of the best non-fiction writers writing in and about their genre. I had the privilege to study under a contibutor from this book and discovered the joys of writing about my life and reading about the lives of others. This book is a necessity to those interested in Creative Non-Fictions. I would also recommend Naked and Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris, Writing Life Stories by Bill Roorbach, and Take the Cannoli by Sarah Vowell.

                    Product Description

The 14th century English alliterative poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is admired for its morally complex plot and brilliant poetics. A chivalric romance placed in an Arthurian setting, it received acclaim from the peasantry of its time for its commentary regarding important socio-political and religious concerns. The poemÂ’s technical brilliance blends psychological depth and vivid language to produce an effect widely considered superior to any other work of the time. Although the poem is a combination of English alliterative meter, romanticism, and a wide-ranging knowledge of Celtic lore, continental materials and Latin classics, the extent to which Classical antecedents affected or directed the poem is a point of continued controversy among literary scholars. This collection of essays by scholars of diverse interests addresses this puzzling and fascinating question. The introduction provides an expansive background for the topic, and subsequent essays explore the extent to which classical Greek, Roman, Arabic, Christian and Celtic influences are revealed in the poem's opening and closing allusions, themes, and composition. Essays discuss the way in which the anonymous author of Sir Gawain employs figural echoes of classical materials, cultural memoirs of past British tradition, and romantic re-textualizations of Trojan and British literature. It is argued that Sir Gawain may be understood as an Aeneas, Achilles, or Odysseus figure, while the British situation in the 14th century may be understood as analogous to that of ancient Troy.

I have not yet read this work but feel compelled to note that the statement in the editorial product description, that "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" "received acclaim from the peasantry of its time for its commentary regarding important socio-political and religious concerns" is absurd. First, the "peasantry" of the time did not read chivalric romances, for they could not read. Secondly, the poem exists in the unique manuscript British Library Cotton Nero A.x, and there is no mention of it until the seventeenth century and hardly acclaimed by anyone until the nineteenth century. Information on how the poem comments on the "socio-political and religious concerns" of the 14th century may or may not be found in this collection of essays, but it is doubtful that the author of the product description couldn't tell us.

In the preface of "Tilings and Patterns: An Introduction," the authors write: "This volume is a brief edition...comprising the first seven chapters of our earlier book Tilings and Patterns... The present paperback version contains all the material from the oirginal text that deals with tilings by regular polygons, the topological and symmetry properties of tilings, the motif-transitive patterns in general, and the special cases where the motif is a circular or elliptical disk or a straight-line segment. It also includes several classifications of very symmetric tilings." There is no indication of what topics were covered in the remaining chapters (8-12) of the original edition.

This book is a magnificent achievement.

I just want to gush about this book, but that won't do you any good. It is the very best in its field. Just start there.

Grunwald and Shepard have put together the definitive book on ways to tile the two dimensional plane. "Tiling" means covering the 2D universe with interlocking figures, so that no gap remains. Bathroom tiles do that, and patterns of brick on walls, and all of those wonderful geometries that the Muslim artists raised to their god in place of graven images.

That can not be enough for the very strongest of creative minds. The authors show the "Penrose tiles", that cover the world without ever repeating. Penrose used a five-way plan, which barely meets the needs of the world's symmetries. Amman used a four-way plan, like floor tiles, but created tiles that forever create new patterns. The pattern fills the world, but never repeats (except in detail). And then, there are the spiral tiles - perfectly regular, and different at every scale.

The artist will savor the richness of the plane. A mathematician will sink deeply into the many symmetries that turn THIS point into all points, or no other, or some, or all of the above. The student will struggle through the problems at the end of each chapter. Thoughtful readers will simply find themselves wandering away from every page, where some seed of thought blossoms in your mind.

I can not imagine how this could have gone out of print. I really can't. This book is the only one that covers its topic in !every! way. Depending on who you are, you must have it.

Every field has its overused word. In sports it is super-star and in publishing it is definitive. However, there can be no dispute that this book can be described using both of those words.
With complete explanations followed by problems and references, this is the place to look if you have any interest in this area. The problems range from the near obvious and trivial to the unsolved. The mathematics is often strenuous, but not overwhelming, as many times the proofs require many cases. Each chapter terminates in a notes and reference section that is superb. It recapitulates the history and contains an enormous number of references. This is especially helpful given the wide range of sources. Examples include the expected ones in mathematics and geometry, but also crystallography, virology, art, philosophy, and quilting. The authors also take the extra effort to point out what is as yet unsolved.
An authoritative work that makes one plea for a second edition, this book is everything you could ask of it.

This is deep, dense and thorough; on a topic that was without such a definitive reference book. This is not what i would call a completely accessible book, to persons that are not professional mathematicians, but the crisp and fascinating illustrations are compelling to anyone with an active curiosity.

Worthwhile for interested parties; an single-volume encyclopaedia on the subjects of Tesselations, tiling, and intriguing information on conceptual patterns.

                      Book Description

The classical approach to environmental policy--of activists and government regulators against polluting industries--has had impressive results. But it can never achieve a sustainable society that integrates environmental values into everyday thinking and decision-making. In Our Common Journey, Paul de Jongh proposes a new model of cooperative environmental management that brings together government, business, citizens and activists to negotiate long-term deals on policy. De Jongh's model is based on his leadership of the Dutch National Environmental Policy Plan, the international standard in sustainable development planning.
