    Book Description

For nearly three centuries the spectacular rise and fall of the South Sea Company has gripped the public imagination as the most graphic warning to investors of the dangers of unbridled speculation. Yet history repeats itself and the same elemental forces that drove up the price of South Sea shares to dizzying heights in 1720 have in recent years produced the global crash of 1987, the Japanese stock market bubble of the 1980s/90s, and the international dot.com boom of the 1990s.

The First Crash throws light on the current debate about investor rationality by re-examining the story of the South Sea Bubble from the standpoint of investors and commentators during and preceding the fateful Bubble year. In absorbing prose, Richard Dale describes the trading techniques of London's Exchange Alley (which included 'modern' transactions such as derivatives) and uses new data, as well as the hitherto neglected writings of a brilliant contemporary financial analyst, to show how investors lost their bearings during the Bubble period in much the same way as during the dot.com boom.

The events of 1720, as presented here, offer insights into the nature of financial markets that, being independent of place and time, deserve to be considered by today's investors everywhere. This book is therefore aimed at all those with an interest in the behavior of stock markets.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A scholarly, technical account of the South Sea Bubble.......2006-09-18

"The First Crash" by Richard Dale deals with the lessons from the South Sea Bubble of 1720.

According to the dust jacket Dale is Emeritus Professor of International Banking at Southampton University, England. As one might expect, the book contains much technical jargon relating to capital market theory and accounting.

Dale certainly knows his subject and is up to speed with the literature - the bibliography of this 198-page book has 148 entries.

The book might appeal to students or specialists such as bankers, accountants and investment advisors, but it is hard going for the rest of us.

You almost need a financial dictionary by your side and a calculator to follow the intricacies of most of Dale's technical explanations. There is a short Glossary in the book, but it is totally inadequate.

To be fair, it is possible to skip over most of the financial detail and still get a feel for the atmosphere and activities that led to the inflation and deflation of the bubble.

Prior to reading the book I was unaware of the sophistication of financial techniques available in the 18th century. Many of the investment tools in common use today (eg options, discounted cash flow calculations, futures contracts) were available in essentially similar form then.

They were also abused in much the same way (and by people of similar character) as they were in all subsequent bubbles. Human nature never changes, and the possibility of large gain attracts the greedy, the credulous and the scoundrel.

Chapter 9 contains a technical and rather pedantic discussion of the lessons from the bubble that will be of interest to specialists, but probably not to most general readers.

If you have the skills and want to pore over the financial technicalities of the South Sea Bubble you will enjoy the book and you will benefit from Dale's impressive knowledge.

If you just want to know what happened and why it happened, there are more suitable and accessible accounts than this book.

      Book Description

What impact do state-level institutions have on the behavior of state supreme court justices and interest groups participating as amici curiae in those courts? Specifically, is the information provided by interest groups conditioned on the judicial retention system, or whether the state uses the ballot initiative, and does that information impact the decision-making process of the justices? Comparato answers these questions by employing strategic theories of judicial and group behavior, with groups motivated by the attainment of policy and group maintenance, and state supreme court justices motivated by policy and the continued maintenance of their position on the court. He argues that the information provided in amicus curiae briefs allows both groups and state supreme court justices to achieve their respective goals. In order to answer these questions, Comparto analyzes litigant and amicus curiae briefs as well as judicial decisions from seven state supreme courts to evaluate the effects of state-level institutions on the types of information provided to state supreme court justices, and how those justices respond to that information. The results suggest that interest groups do behave strategically, providing information to justices that they believe will be useful in helping the justices retain their seats on the court and achieve their desired policy outcomes. There is also support for the expectation that the information provided by litigants and amici, as well as the retention method, have a direct impact on the decision-making of justices.

                              Book Description

El Nino and the Southern Oscillation is by far the most striking phenomenon caused by the interplay of ocean and atmosphere. It can be explained neither in strictly oceanographic nor strictly meteorological terms. This volume provides a brief history of the subject, summarizes the oceanographic and meteorological observations and theories, and discusses the recent advances in computer modeling studies of the phenomenon.

4 out of 5 stars A Fine Collection of Beasts.......2004-11-06

In The Heraldic Imagination, the various odd monsters and creatures found in heraldry (ranging from the commonplace dragons, unicorns, and griffins to the obscure melusines, yales and apreses) are laid out and discussed. This book is a must-have for anyone seriously interested in the field of heraldry.

The book is not perfect- it does go into significant detail about heraldry in general, which detracts from its focus as a bestiary of armoury. It also contains a number of errors, such as the description of what is actually a badly-drawn wolf's head crest as a new form of sea-dragon. These errors are neatly summed up in a review in The Coat of Arms, and are not enough to ruin the book.

                                  4 out of 5 stars A gorgeous book.......2001-08-10

A well-produced, lavishly illustrated, and yet very informative volume on the artistic aspects of heraldry and how European styles and symbolisms affected British armory. Especially interesting are the discussions of "attributed" arms, such as those of Christ and King Arthur; apparently, it was unthinkable to medieval heralds that gentlemen of such significance and rank should not be assigned official arms.

                                            Book Description

This new volume provides an indispensable guide to the proliferating bibliography (often hard of access) of several thousand Ancient Arabian inscriptions through one-and-a-half millennia (c. 1000 BC to c. 570 AD), mainly in South Arabia, but including also some monumental texts from NW Arabia and others from E Arabia. The Bibliography offers important information on each principal text (all sigla by which each is named, with ample cross-references; location, date, nature, besides the vital list of publications in which each appears). A comprehensive but compact set of charts provides a basic palaeography, to help in the dating of texts that lack a royal name. Updates are given for the chronology, king-lists, and lists of sources in Volume 1, and (to complement the minimal dates in that work) fresh maximal dates for those wishing to base their dates on the supposed Assyrian synchronism with Karibil Watar I of Saba in 685 BC.

Wading Into Wetlands is an excellent resource for teachers of any grade who would like to introduce the importance of Wetlands Habitats. This is part of the Ranger Rick Nature Scope series and the National Wildlife Federation. Each chapter (What Makes A Wetland; Saltwater Wetlands; Freshwater Wetlands; Wetlands, Wildlife and Peoples; and Crafts) is has complete adaptations for Primary (K-2), Intermediate (3-5) and Junior High (6-7) students. The book addresses all of the seven intelligences: it has opportunities to learn songs, build models, illustrate concepts, research projects, utilize mapping techniques, and more. I am using it with my third grade class. Each child is researching a different wetland bird and making a scale model of it for our wetlands bulletin board, along with a short report. They will find different insects, mollusks, invertebrates, fish, plants and animals to add during their research. Many of these are suggested in the Wading Into Wetlands book. We will build a mangrove habitat (Mail order: That Pet Place at 1-888-thatpet sells mangrove seedlings for $1.50 and we will plant some in fresh water and some in salt water to see the plant's adaptations to different water). We will visit a local small marshy area not too far from our school and explore the area. They will write to the President about how important it is to maintain wetlands areas for migratory birds. This book is a real find and I am using every page of it for my class. I highly recommend it.
