    1 out of 5 stars Disappointed!.......2007-05-29

Given the high reputation of the DB quant team in London, I was expecting something on the line of Brigo & Mercurio's wonderful book "Interest Rate Models". Alas, it is nowhere near in terms of breath of contents and analytical depth (well, the price is higher tough). Maybe the authors cannot reveal their proprietary models or did not want to give too much away, then why did they write a usuless book and ruin their reputation?

    2 out of 5 stars Taken aback.......2007-04-16

While the info in the book seems to be relevant (by other people's recommendations) I've been taken aback by the authors starting each section with the theoretical coverage.

One of the best teachers - Steven Dym - said that you should think twice about any finance book that starts a new chapter with a math formula.
This book shows off with maths on the 1st page!!!

    The best approach is to
    1) dive into why a certain financial product came to existance,
    2) how it works, and them
    3) dive into theory.

Starting with the #3 will just make me try to guess #1 and #2.

      Book Description

Racial categories can be spatial categories. The writers reject the idea that spaces, and the arrangement of bodies in them, emerge naturally over time. Do Native reservations, Chinatowns or slums simply emerge naturally? Or are they products of more active, often violent, resettlements? The authors ask * How did such places come to exist? * What is the future of the ideas that formed these places? * ...and readers are encouraged to unmap drinking estabishments, parks, slums, classrooms, urban spaces of prostitution, main streets, mosques, and international borders. The ideas in this book are part of a growing, unsettling field of exploration that spans geography, sociology, law, and education.

                  Description:
The main application for solar energy in southern Mediterranean countries in agriculture is the drying of agricultural crops. The optimisation of dryers necessitates complete knowledge of the whole drying process, thus leading to energy savings and avoiding environmental pollution by using renewable sources of energy. We present a study concerning thermal behaviour of a solar air heater as a source of energy for drying agricultural products. In order to simulate the functioning of our solar collector, we chose a simple model based on the evaluation of different heat transfer coefficients in the collector and within the external environment, which allows determining the overall collector heat loss coefficient. Our purpose was to calculate the fluid outlet temperature, the output energy used and thermal efficiency as a function of ambient temperature, incident solar radiation, wind speed and air mass flow rate. The present suggested model's results demonstrated that the air heater has paid off since we can attain the temperature on the order of 80^oC at the fluid outlet and 60% in thermal performance.

This is volume 1 of two-volume book that presents an excellent, comprehensive exposition of the multi-faceted subjects of modern condensed matter physics, unified within an original and coherent conceptual framework. Traditional subjects such as band theory and lattice dynamics are tightly organized in this framework, while many new developments emerge spontaneously from it. In this volume, · Basic concepts are emphasized; usually they are intuitively introduced, then more precisely formulated, and compared with correlated concepts. · A plethora of new topics, such as quasicrystals, photonic crystals, GMR, TMR, CMR, high Tc superconductors, Bose–Einstein condensation, etc., are presented with sharp physical insights. · Bond and band approaches are discussed in parallel, breaking the barrier between physics and chemistry. · A highly accessible chapter is included on correlated electronic states — rarely found in an introductory text. · Introductory chapters on tunneling, mesoscopic phenomena, and quantum-confined nanostructures constitute a sound foundation for nanoscience and nanotechnology. · The text is profusely illustrated with about 500 figures.

In the tradition of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Umberto Eco, Lawrence Norfolk has created a dizzyingly dense and impressively erudite fantasy of a novel, a vast edifice based around a single, actual historical event: the sinking off the coast of Italy of a Portugese ship bound on a bizarre mission, to deliver an African rhino to Pope Leo X. Norfolk takes his readers on a world tour of the 16th century, from the flophouses of Rome to the rain forest of West Africa, and along the way he piles historical esoterica upon philosophical rumination upon myriad subplots and minor characters. The chains of event and coincidence and the encyclopedic references will exhaust some readers long before the mad quest for the rhino meets its watery end, but Norfolk's baroque talent remains inexhaustible.

                                      Book Description

The highly acclaimed author of Lempriere's Dictionary, which was selected as a New York Times Notable Book of 1992, returns with a vivid, antic, and picaresque fictional tapestry--reminiscent of The Name of ther Rose--which spins around one of history's most bizarre chapters: the 16th-century attempt to procure a rhinoceros for the amusement of Pope Leo X.

4 out of 5 stars A little bit of Eco..........2004-07-25

With "The Pope's Rhinoceros," a novel I stumbled upon in my early college days while working as a humble bookstore clerk(thanks to a customer's reccomendation, no less), Lawrence Norfolk is clearly driving the same proverbial car as Umberto Eco. However, it feels as though the story is going in a wildly different direction than such titles as "Foucault's Pendulum" and "Name of the Rose." Indeed, this is more playful and feels almost like a post-modern interpretation of the more longwinded brands of historical fiction out there.

Think of it as "Baudolino" meets "The Princess Bride,"(Just look at Salvestro and Bernardo and if you do not see the obvious similarities you're looking too hard) with a heavier dose of rhetoric than both combined.

All in all it is entertaining, particularly for the ex-humanities majors out there and does a better job of painting the absurdities of the Renaissance than it does to tell an actual technical story.

Then again, I've spent a better time with this book than I'd had in a while.

                                      4 out of 5 stars The Pope's Rhinoceros..........2004-07-19

I started reading Lawrence Norfolk's second Novel on a flight from London to Houston in early April 2004. I finished it on July 18. The last book that took me as long to read was Salman Rushdie's "The Satanic Verses". Both books are fascinating, but at times immensely tedious. I intend to read both again after I retire!
I found the style of the book descriptive in the extreme. This worked in some instances, like the description of the rainforest somewhere in Goa?/Africa?, but often was at the expense of good story telling and a cohesive narative. The reader is very likely to lose sense of times, places, events and characters as some of the naration is actually a parade of memories taking place inside some character's mind. As a result, the reader might read a whole chapter without having any sense of time, place, event, etc.
As has been said by others, the ending was rushed and was in no way in proportion to the less improtant but extremely verbose descriptions given elsewhere.
Some of the likeable characters were treated unsympathetically. For example, can someone tell me what happened to Bernardo whose fortunes we followed in detail most of the way, but who suddenly disappeared without any fuss.

                                      3 out of 5 stars The Pope's Rhinoceros.......2003-01-28

The opening pages which take the reader through the centuries of the ice age were indicative of what was to follow. The prose was compelling but very descriptive and I felt this was at the expense of narrative drive. I did not emerge from the book with a much clearer idea about what drove Niklot/Salvestro, or indeed many of the other characters in the book. While true life is often confusing, I would have welcomed a bit more "glue" holding the many different episodes together. Full marks to an earlier reviewer's dissection of the plot, much of which I missed---I don't think I'm particularly slow, and I like to be kept guessing, but not to the point where I forget which country I'm in. I skimmed the last hundred or so pages, feeling that I'd not taken adequate notes as I read it. I began to flounder in a welter of details quite early on in the process, so I'm not the best qualified judge, but the ending seemed anticlimactic. Plenty of brilliant scenes throughout the book, which was populated with a gallery of fantastic grotesques and others, and many of the scenes would have made great short stories. But ultimately the lack of narrative and construction made the book unwieldy. A pity, since the characters and their time were anyway so fascinating, and not covered so frequently these days.

5 out of 5 stars Imagination meets Erudition.......2002-12-08

Lawrence Norfolk's vivid imagination goes amok in this, his second novel. The characters are fantastic and utterly believable. His knowledge of early 16th century Europe and the religious and political strife therein make for a lovely canvas upon which this hefty tome is created.

3 out of 5 stars This book's definitely not for everyone..........2002-05-29

I enjoyed Norfolk's first book, "Lempriere's Dictionary," a great deal, although it requires a tremendous amount of memory and attention to detail to really follow the twists & turns of the plot: It was very rich and satisfying, and it finally "came together." For me, "The Pope's Rhinoceros" had the difficulty of "LD" but not the pay-off: At the end, I still couldn't fully understand the motivations of the different characters, why they made decisions one way and not the other, and so on. If "LD" had something of the character of a murder mystery, then "TPR" had the character of a murder mystery without a murder: You keep waiting for the sun to rise and dispel the fog, but find out that in the end, the fog is just smog and won't be dispelled.

The book does repay careful reading: For example, there is an entire bread-eating scene that is more-or-less incomprehensible if you don't know what "spurred wheat" is, and aren't curious enough to look it up. (Hint: You may need to look at a real dictionary, not just what's available for free on-line.) Maybe if I had caught every one of these subtle hints, I would have understood the story better - or maybe not.

My basic feeling is that the publisher rushed Norfolk to finish his second book before it had received the polishing that his first displayed. I hope this doesn't happen again: He's proven to me that he's too good a literary craftsman to be wasting his time on rush-jobs.
