Book Description
The failure of optimized portfolios to meet their practical investment goals has prompted many portfolio managers to abandon optimization techniques for simpler alternatives to maximize asset value. Yet, according to financial expert Richard Michaud, readily available methods exist to help practitioners reduce instability and enhance the value of optimization--tools that the investment community has largely ignored. In his succinct new book, Michaud argues that the problems lies with the conventional perception of optimization as a numerical computation; this view has severely restricted the typical manager's understanding of inherent limitations--and resulted in optimized portfolios that frequently fall short of their potential. If, instead, managers approach optimization as a statistical estimation, Michaud argues, they can resolve many of the serious limitations. Michaud identifies and explains five powerful techniques--improved estimation, application of benchmark priors, integration of active forecasts, tests for efficiency, and tests for portfolio weights--that portfolio managers can use to reduce errors, increase precision, and enhance the value of seemingly optimized portfolios. He illustrates the impact of each method with a simple asset allocation problem. With its important implications for investment practice, Efficient Asset Management's highly intuitive yet rigorous approach to defining optimal portfolios will appeal to investment management executives, consultants, brokers, and anyone seeking to stay abreast of current investment technology. Through practical examples and illustrations, Michaud updates the practice of optimization for modern investment management.
Customer Reviews:
Important information when considering Markowitz optimization.......2007-05-13
Michaud's resampling methodology is quite rigorous, although the patentability of application of econometric concepts that are over 40 years old to a theory advanced by Markowitz in 1952 should be seriously questioned by any rational reader. The applicability of resampling and improvements to the inputs to estimation are clear, and should be strongly considered by anyone in the asset management industry. The book glosses over other approaches to optimization that are not based on Markowitz, all but ignoring the huge body of literature that has been built up around other optimization approaches. Except for this shortfall, this is an excellent book, and shoulds be a part of your library on quantitative asset management.
It has good chapters, but..........2006-04-14
This book has a couple of good chapters on the problems of implementing the Markowitz model. Interestingly enough, I understood better the resampling idea in Scherer's article (a clean and honest review in my opinion which Michaud understandably hates) than in the entire Michaud's book. If I'm not mistaken the basic resampling idea was originally due to Jorion. Michaud patented it a variation of it. Now if you want to implement the ideas presented in this book, you are by law forbidden to do it (because it is patented). In that sense I think this book should be free (since as another reviewer below put it, it is a sales pitch.) There is an interesting review on this troubling trend of patenting really basic algorithms in Wilmott Magazine. Still it makes interesting reading. 2 1/2 stars.
Required Reading for Sophisticated Investors.......2006-01-13
This is an excellent book for the readers with solid quant skills. This is not a course in investing for poets. So be honest with yourself about your capabilities and needs.
the author responds.......2005-11-23
The new reader should know that the innovations in the book described in chapters 6 and 7 have been awarded three patents so far, two in the U.S. and one in Israel. Worldwide patents are pending. The critiques by some reviewers do not mention that many sophisticated investment and consulting institutions worldwide have adopted the techniques described in this book as their sole asset allocation optimization framework. They also do not mention that Markowitz has confirmed that "Michaud optimization beats Markowitz optimization" and that "Bayes does not beat Michaud optimization." Resampled Efficiency optimization is the only provably effective portfolio optimization and portfolio rebalancing technology in the world today and is revolutionizing asset management in practice worldwide. See www.newfrontieradvisors.com for further updates, research and applications.
All gloss no substance.......2005-03-16
I am surprised that this process has gained the clout that it has. It almost seems like the finance industry got bored of existing processes and so came up with something new and possibly promising, evn though the author himself cannot explain why hes doing what he is doing.
The book is short, but could have so been shorter had it not been for Michauds constant repetition of ideas. Save your money and google the concept if u really want to know about it.

Book Description
This book gives a comprehensive account of financial optimization models used to support decision-making for financial engineers. It starts with the classical static mean-variance analysis and portfolio immunization, moves on to scenario-based models, and builds towards multi-period dynamic portfolio optimization. As the story unfolds the relationships between classes of models are revealed. Once the foundations are laid with several building blocks, and the broad landscape of financial optimization is charted, the book moves on to analyze several real-world applications. In this way the reader acquires not only solid knowledge of the foundations of financial optimization, but also a taste for the large-scale models that can be grounded on these foundations.

Book Description
Huge changes have taken place in Irish society over the past 10-15 years, and many controversial policy decisions which have resulted in those changes, have been provided for by legal interpretation. This pamphlet asks whether that situation is a healthy one for the Irish polity. Is it democratic? Are the politicians using the courts to avoid public controversy for their own political ends?
David Gwynn Morgan ask these questions and offers ideas which might be used for the redefinition of the role of the judiciary as they confront matters of national policy.

Pruning and training review.......2002-07-30
A great book for both the experienced and novice gardener. Informative pictures, clear, concise and easy to follow.
However as many of us gardeners know the only way to prune is to get out there and do it! Mistakes will be made but hopefully not as many with this guide.

Customer Reviews:
Not so good........2006-03-03
Didn't find this book very helpful. It's my first pruning book and I hope others are better. It was more of an overview than a 'how to, when to' guide. Even the specific plants it mentions only get a few sentences each.
Eyewitness Garden Handbooks: Pruning and Training.......2000-04-22
The Eyewitness Garden Handbooks: Pruning and Training was such a tremendous help to me in developing the beautiful garden I had always wanted. It was able to walk me through the difficult process of espalier techniques that had always been so difficult to grasp from the other books I had read for this involved procedure. The beautiful pictures and easy to understand language made this a book I will use year after year! I would recommend it to everyone!
Customer Reviews:
no one has written a better book.......2006-06-01
As other reviews write, it is certainly a humble book. The section on the training of young trees (a mere 2 1/2 pages) is concise, easy to follow, and copied by many newer authors. Available at most nursery stores. You can find thicker books with more pictures and more discussion, but still, no improvement. Available from: Martin Bio-Products, Burbank CA. Carried by many nurseries, incl. Walter Andersen in San Diego, CA.

Book Description
The wealth of petroleum has made the Middle East one of the most actively explored regions of the world. The volume of geological, geophysical and geochemical data collected by the petroleum industry in recent decades is enormous. The Middle East may be a unique region in the world where the volume of subsurface data and information exceeds that based on surface outcrop.
This book reviews the tectonic and geological history of the Middle East and the regional hydrocarbon potential on a country by country basis in the context of current ideas developed through seismic and sequence stratigraphy and incorporating the ideas of global sea level change.
Subsurface data have been used as much as possible to amplify the descriptions.
The paleogeographic approach provides a means to view the area as a whole. While the country by country approach inevitably leads to some repetition, it enhances the value of the volume as a teaching tool and underlines some of the changing lithologies within formations carrying the same name.

Book Description
The ancient philosophical school of Epicureanism tried to argue that death is 'nothing to us'. Were they right? James Warren provides a comprehensive study and articulation of the interlocking arguments against the fear of death found not only in the writings of Epicurus himself, but also in Lucretius' poem De rerum natura and in Philodemus' work De morte. These arguments are central to the Epicurean project of providing ataraxia (freedom from anxiety) and therefore central to an understanding of Epicureanism as a whole. They also offer significant resources for modern discussions of the value of death - one which stands at the intersection of metaphysics and ethics. If death is the end of the subject, and the subject can not be benefited nor harmed after death, is it reasonable nevertheless to fear the ceasing-to-be? If the Epicureans are not right to claim that the dead can neither be benefited nor harmed, what alternative models might be offered for understanding the harm done by death and do these alternatives suffer from any further difficulties? The discussion involves consideration of both ethical and metaphysical topics since it requires analysis not only of the nature of a good life but also the nature of personal identity and time. A number of modern philosophers have offered criticisms or defences of the Epicureans' views. Warren explores and evaluates these in the light of a systematic and detailed study of the precise form and intention of the Epicureans' original arguments. Warren argues that the Epicureans also were interested in showing that mortality is not to be regretted and that premature death is not to be feared. Their arguments for these conclusions are to be found in their positive conception of the nature of a good and complete life, which divorce the completeness of a life as far as possible from considerations of its duration. Later chapters investigate the nature of a life lived without the fear of death and pose serious problems for the Epicureans being able to allow any concern for the post mortem future and being able to offer a positive reason for prolonging a life which is already complete in their terms.

Facing My Brother's Death.......2007-08-27
My brother, Scott Swaner, was a Professor at the Univ. of Washington, Seattle when he was diagnosed
with terminal Pancreatic Cancer. He was only 38 years old and other than teaching, he devoured philsophy,
wrote poetry, translated Korean literature and poetry and was waiting for his first novel to be published.
He was living a determined and purposeful life.
The shock of the diagnosis, left him befuddled, but he continued to study and write as he always had.
This book-- Facing Death by James Warren, is one of only three books that Scott read, and recommended
for anyone facing their own mortality.
Scott encouraged each and all of his family members and friends to get a copy and read along with him
as he continued to try and make sense of the senseless.
It helped us.
It helped Scott. I will forever be indebted to Mr. Warren for his words and thoughts.
The Book: Facing Death-- helped save my brothers life, even as he was dying.
Scott died December 20, 2006. Only nine months after his diagnosis and three weeks shy of his 39th
birthday.
We completely recommend this book, for anyone faced with the same situation--
and for anyone who wants to broaden and expand their mind.
Sheri Swaner
Great investigation of Epicurianism, but a bit boring.......2005-05-17
Maybe you stumbled on a description of Epicurus' philosophy and were attracted to it, like I was. A review in Skeptic magazine included a quote:
"God should not concern us.
Death is not to be feared.
What is good is easy to obtain.
What is bad is easily avoided."
A nice perspective to have, as the modern world becomes more and more hedonistic, and God seems more and more out of the picture.
I read Warren's book a couple months ago, so please forgive my fuzziness. The first section is very engaging--a wonderful philosopher's breakdown of the conflicts and claims Epicureanism. In particular, it enumerates the many fears one can have regarding death. My purpose, as yours may be, in reading this book was to see how Epicurus claims to deal with these. This first section promised an investigation into these fears (and true enough, the book delivered).
The second section is on the symmetry argument (not existing before birth doesn't bother us, neither should absence after death). This is an interesting argument, but is not convincing (he agrees, and reserves some criticisms for later). However, it is definitely much too long--I almost wish I'd skipped it.
The rest of the book analyzes some other objections to Epicurianism, from the fear of mortality to the unsustainability of their perfect life (nutshell: at every moment you are satisfied with having lived your life. How can you justify preserving it?).
In fact my only objection to his arguments is in the Epicurean Will section (why write a will if you have no care what happens after your death?). It seems obvious to me that you might write a will to appease and comfort those around you (your grandson might be less nice to you in life if you didn't promise to give him your house when you died; thus you'd be more unhappy.)
In the later parts of the book, he digs deeper into the primary texts of the early practicers, trying to get a handle on what Epicurus taught. I was a little disappointed (slightly uplifted later, at the conclusion) that less time was spent analyzing the viability of these teachings--at this point it became too historical for my taste.
The book is obsessively footnoted, so many of the issues he raises (not only with historical interpretations, but also in viability) can be further explored in literature (some online, some not). Many point to dry topics, but undoubtedly some address my objections.
To tell the truth, in the end I was uninterested in a lot of the conclusions. I'd realized that at least one of my particular major objections were not going to be addressed. Still, I think that alot of the issues, examples, and counterpoints he makes are very illuminating. I have benefitted from reading this book, and as soon as I can get around to it, plan to look up some more argumentative modern defenses of Epicurianism.

Alexander to Actium: The Historical Evolution of the Hellenistic Age (Hellenistic Culture and Society)
ASIN: 0691043671 |
Book Description
Callimachus has usually been seen as the archetypal ivory-tower poet, the epitome if not the inventor of the concept of art for art's sake, author of erudite works written to be read in book form by fellow poets and scholars. Abundant evidence, much of it assembled here for the first time, suggests a very different story: a world of civic festivals rather than books and libraries, a world in which poetry and poets played a central and public role. In the course of the argument, Cameron casts fresh light on the lives, dates, works, and interrelationships of most of the other leading poets of the age. Another axiom of modern scholarship is that the object of Callimachus's literary polemic was epic. Yet Cameron shows that the thriving school of epic poets celebrating the wars of Hellenistic kings that has so dominated modern study simply never existed. Elegy was the fashionable genre of the age, and the bone of contention between Callimachus and his rivals (all fellow elegists) was the nature of elegiac narrative. A final chapter sketches some of the implications of this revised view of Callimachus and his world for the interpretation of Roman, especially Augustan, poetry.

Book Description
The world is configured in ways that seem systematically hospitable to life forms, especially the human race. Is this the outcome of divine planning or simply of the laws of physics? Ancient Greeks and Romans famously disagreed on whether the cosmos was the product of intelligent design or accident. In this book, David Sedley examines this question and illuminates new historical perspectives on the pantheon of thinkers who laid the foundations of Western philosophy and science. Versions of what we call the "creationist" option were widely favored by the major thinkers of classical antiquity, including Plato, whose ideas on the subject prepared the ground for Aristotle's celebrated teleology. But Aristotle aligned himself with the anti-creationist lobby, whose most militant members--the atomists--sought to show how a world just like ours would form inevitably by sheer accident, given only the infinity of space and matter. This stimulating study explores seven major thinkers and philosophical movements enmeshed in the debate: Anaxagoras, Empedocles, Socrates, Plato, the atomists, Aristotle, and the Stoics.

Book Description
A substantial and in-depth study of the history of the atomic theory of matter between the time of Democritus and that of Newton. It is the first to emphasize the continuity of the atomic debate and the debt owed by the seventeenth-century "moderns" to the medieval critique of Aristotle.
Customer Reviews:
The Philosophy of Matter and Void.......2002-04-07
Pyle's book Atomism is an astonishing masterpiece which details the history of the study of matter and voids from Zeno to Newton. The work details the debates of those who maintained that the foundational atomic material of nature is extended (Democritus, etc.) and those who maintained that the foundational atomic material cannot be extended and is thus unextended (Zeno, Galileo, Boscovish, etc.). Also, the work details the critically important debates over whether or not absolute perfect voids or nothingnesses exist. The implications of these questions are critical in the progression of philosophy, physics, and the study of matter. This book is a must for physicists, philosophers, chemists, ontologists, and mathematicians who are studiers of matter and seekers of the final atomic entity.
FROM DEMOCRITUS TO PYLE.......2000-09-04
An excellent overview of most atomistic thought; unfortunately, it is strongly biased by Pyle's uncritical(!) acceptance of modern classical mathematics. This is not an unusual condition, but it does affect the descriptions of pros and cons for atomism. He also lumps atomistic thought too closely together, again, not an unusual method. This is an excellent "second" source book, but not one to use as an argument for or against atomism, logical or physical. If the choice were available, I would rate it at three and one half stars. It is worth the purchase cost for some one seriously interested in becomming aquainted with the philosophical thought surrounding atomism.
awesome.......1999-07-08
This is a great work in the history and philosophy of science. It is both authoritative and well written, highly recommended for anyone studying either philosophy (esp. 17th century) or the history of science, or just anyone who wants to know how we got from there to here (well, at least to Newton).
