Great Resource.......2007-01-11

I've been using this book for several years now. And each year I buy copies for our farm interns and staff. I think the book does a great job of showing various pieces of equipment with the how and why it works. The vignettes of farmers who use those tools is very helpful in offering a three dimensional real life picture of how the tool may or may not work on our farm. Great book, one we refer to often for ideas and to make sure we all have the same "picture" in our heads of what a tool can and might do.

So happy I own it!.......2004-04-14

Yes, I agree with the previous reviewer that this is a collectible, and not the version of "The Great Gatsby" to buy in order to read. But I am one of the Gatsby and Fitzerald junkies who wanted this, badly, the moment I heard it was going to be released.

It is, though, even if you do want to read it, so fragile (the material its pages are made of) and unwieldy that it's nearly frightening - I may destroy it, is the feeling I have each time I look at it.

As for the substance: the book went through a number of changes, and this respresents one. So, it isn't an all-encompassing view of the progression of the writing of the book - it's one set of corrections. The fascination, for me, is with Fitzgerald's handwriting, markings, and marginalia. I do have an affinity for handwriting, and for Fitzgerald, so this is interesting to me. Less interesting is that these are corrected galleys, really, because I know of other versions (read, even, the book "Trimalchio: an early edition of The Great Gatsby") and, even after these particular galleys were proofed, FSF sent telegrams to his editor requesting further change - most notably, the title, which didn't get changed as the book had already gone to print.

Nevertheless, owning this is a piece of FSF history and I love it. I like less reading it than looking at it, but that's me. I wouldn't do without it, and if I got more of them for my birthday I'd be in heaven!!

The series is numbered, and I wish I had a lower number. (It took me a little while to bring myself to spend the money.) For this reason, when it came from Amazon in a box too small for it, with no packaging material, and the corners of _its_ box pressed in, I didn't return it for a clean copy. But I do wish more care had been taken in the packaging of this item. It's that important to me.

Collectible -- not book.......2000-11-12

The Univ. of South Carolina Press facsimile of the "Trimalchio" galleys is worth owning if you're a serious Fitzgerald junkie, and Bruccoli's comments are (as always) enlightening, but buy the Cambridge edition if you actually plan to read the text -- the pages are looseleaf and about 24 inches long (like the galleys, presumably), so it doesn't fit so well in a backpack or on a bookshelf.

Most importantly, it is READABLE.......2007-04-22

Readable, in-depth and broad in scope, this history covers the rise of Rome and the Successor states following the death of Alexander. The second half of the book examines the social changes and the cultural richness of the period: Hellenistic women, changes in art & architecture as well as city design and scholarship. I will definitely read more books by Grant, a well-versed scholar with a penchant for good writing and a lack of verbosity.

A thorough summary of the Hellenistic World.......2003-12-01

This book was really an eye opener for me. I have a great love for classical History(especially Roman History) and the Hellenistic period is seldom given the attention I feel it deserves. Grant solves this problem by providing an intense and thorough introduction to the Hellenistic World. I learned a lot from reading this. Nevertheless it must be said that Grant's highly intellectual and thorough style may bore the casual reader. I confess I even found parts of it a bit dull myself(in some cases this was probably due to Grant going over my head, he is a very intelligent person), and I've read lots of history books(though admittedly I only have an associates degree in History so I'm far from a professional historian). So if you think your man(or woman) enough to take on a Hellenistic History book as intellectually intense as this by all means go for it, but if your just looking for a light enjoyable read(that's easy for beginners to understand) you may wish to try something else.

Empire Between the Empires.......2002-06-23

Some readers are apprehensive about Michael Grant because the adjective "prolific" so often precedes his name. Whether or not you've read his other 70 books, this is a great work which, in little over 300 pages, takes us into the heart of the Hellenistic world. The period "Alexander to Cleopatra" is often treated as bookends marking the ending and resumption respectively of interesting periods; the interregnum punctuated only by obscure wars between Ptolemites and Selucids. But, as Grant recalls, the Hellenstic period saw Greek culture spread from Egypt to Central Asia and marked new heights in art, mathematics sculpture and literature. Moreover, without understanding the Hellenistic world, it is well nigh impossible to understand the history behind the New Testament - much of which was written in Greek. Maybe it is the very success of the Alexandrian conquests in spreading Greek culture which leads historians to look down their noses at this period - as if the popularization of Hellenic thinking somehow represents a debasement of the coinage. Well illustrated, too.

Just as individuals have preferences regarding the various goods and services they purchase every day, so they also hold preferences regrding public goods such as hose provided by the naural environment. However, unlike provate goods, environmental goods often cannot be valued by direct reference o any market price. Thsi amkes economic analysis of the costs and benefits of environmental change problematic. Over the past few decades a number of methods have developed to address this problem by attempting to value environmental preferences. Principal among hese has been the contingent valuation (CV) method which uses surveys to ask individuals how much they would be willing to pay or willing to accept in compensation for gains and losses of environmental goods. The period from the mid-1980s to the present day has seen a m,assive expansion in use of the CV method. From its originalroots int eh USA, through Europe and the developed world, the method has now reached worldwide application with a substantial proportion of current studies being undertaken in developing countries where environmental services are often the dominating determinant of everyday living standards. The method has simultaneously moved from the realm of pure academic speculation into the sphere of instiutional decision analysis. However, the past decade also witness a developing critique of the CV method with a number of commentators questioning the underlying validity of its dervied valuations. This volume, therefore, reflects a time of heated debate, as wellas from commentators who see it as an interesting experimental tool regardless of the question of absolute validity of estimates. The book embraces the theoritical, methodologicl, empirical, and institutional aspects of the current debate.
