Through portrayals of the famous (Supreme Court Justices William O. Douglas and William Brennan) and the not-so-famous (Anthony Griffin, a black lawyer who, as an ACLU volunteer, defended the First Amendment rights of the Ku Klux Klan), Nat Hentoff pays tribute to American citizens whose lives embody the values and principles of the U.S. Constitution. For Hentoff, that means a strict insistence on individual rights that leaves him opposed to mandatory prayer and pledges of allegiance in schools, the suppression of prisoners' civil liberties, and quota-based affirmative action programs. President Bill Clinton emerges as a particular object of Hentoff's scorn, as much for conducting an official state meeting with the chief architect of the Tiananmen Square massacre as for domestic policies, such as the failed Communications Decency Act, that are an "evisceration of basic liberties." "Unless more Americans know the Constitution and live the Bill of Rights," Hentoff argues, "the future of the nation as a strongly functioning constitutional democracy will be at risk." Although you may not agree with Hentoff's particular authorial focus--First Amendment enthusiasts will be thrilled with his emphasis on free expression, while Second Amendment advocates will have to search elsewhere for their champion--Living the Bill of Rights should make more Americans think about what it means to be an American.

    Book Description

Nat Hentoff is one of America's most passionate and prominent writers about civil liberties and civil rights. In Living the Bill of Rights, he has taken what is too often thought of as an abstract issue and enlivened it by focusing on representative individuals for whom the Constitution is a vital part of life. As the late Supreme Court Justice William Brennan told Hentoff, Americans need to know how "American liberties were won--and what it takes to keep them alive." With characteristic eloquence, Hentoff covers the full range of American life in these inspiring profiles and stories about public and private heroes--Supreme Court Justices William Brennan and William O. Douglas, Dr. Kenneth Clark, and students, teachers, lawyers, and others who challenge assaults on the Bill of Rights.

4 out of 5 stars Important but Uneven Look at Constitutional Knowledge.......2003-12-20

This book has a very important premise - an examination of how the Bill of Rights, and restrictions on it, can affect the lives of real people. Here that especially applies to the First Amendment, which is Hentoff's specialty. He has great insights into how lack of knowledge among the public of our inalienable constitutional rights can open the door to true modern tyrants who would like to restrict those rights more and more. By profiling courageous Americans, primarily students and teachers who have been persecuted for exercising their rights of free speech, Hentoff brings an important human focus to constitutional issues that most Americans probably think are far-off, lofty theories that don't really apply in real life.

Unfortunately this book tends to drift away from that important premise, and the premise sometimes has to fight to keep its head above water. In profiles of Supreme Court Justices Douglas and Brennan, while correctly praising their work to preserve the Bill of Rights, Hentoff drifts into hero worship that occasionally gets out of hand. The book really loses its focus in the later chapters, as Hentoff starts with important issues in education, religion, and the prison system but then goes off on politically tainted tirades about current events. Examples include generalizing court-appointed attorneys as "less than amateur," and calling Janet Reno "irrelevant." Meanwhile Hentoff's views on the First Amendment's treatment of freedom of religion appear very inconsistent to me (in terms of ground-level applications for students and teachers), though they may be consistent for him in light of his absolutist views on the subject.

Fortunately, Hentoff imparts many especially insightful and far-reaching quotes and nuggets of wisdom from those involved in constitutional battles. The book is saved overall by the courageous citizens and wise Justices who have done so much to teach us all about our rights. But sometimes you get the feeling that they deserve to be in a more consistent book. [~doomsdayer520~]

5 out of 5 stars Personal stories about people standing up for Constitution.......2003-11-05

It is not easy to oppose the opinion of the community, take stands which offend one's neighbors, all in the name of the freedoms set forth in the Bill of Rights. All too often, people chose the easy way, and conform, figuring the fight simply isn't worth it. After all, even if you are right, is it really worth losing your friends, your job, your place in the community, andhaving your kids harrassed and ostracized--all to stand up for an abstract principle?

Hentoff tells the stories of dozens of people who made that choice--many of whom suffered for it. As he repeatedly notes, those who wrote our constitution did not take the easy path..they risked all to fight for ASmerica's independence.

By giving us examples of those who took the risk, and fought the good fight, Hentoff hopes to inspire others to do the same. Some of his stories involve the famous (his stories about Justice Douglas are the best in the book--although readers are cautioned that many of the "facts" Hentoff cites are taken from Douglas' own questionable autobiography), and several very ordinary people.

I was inspired, and even if you aren't, Hentoff's stories will definitely make you think about the issues.

3 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but a decent book nonetheless.......2000-12-13

I thought this was a pretty good book, which makes one wonder why I only gave it three stars. It's all summed up in the title to the Introduction, "Tell them stories about how our liberties were won and what keep them alive." That comes from the mouth of Supreme Court Justice William Brennan in a conversation with the author.

All in all, Hentoff does a decent job. The first chapter on William O. Douglas was easily the best of the book. A story of a man who was deeply committed to the Bill of Rights for ALL Americans, not just the ones with popular views.

The only reason I gave the book 3 stars was that I just did not agree with all of the stories selected by Hentoff as giving examples of, in the author's words, "authentic Americans." Chapters 6, 7, and 8 come to mind. Chapters 6 and 7 deal with Dr. Kenneth Clark, an integrationist.

Now, I'm no segregationist, but I firmly believe in the right of people to choose to segregate themselves. I don't agree with it, but I also don't believe in using the force of government to make people live, work, and play together. Hentoff and Dr. Clark disagree.

    ...

All in all, three chapters devoted to this issue was a bit much, although many of the stories in them were valuable. For example, also in chapter 8, was a story about a high school that required people running for homecoming court to disclose their race. Why? Because the court had to be 1/2 white and 1/2 black. Clearly that is wrong: the government should not use race as a factor if people really are equal before the law.

Finally, Hentoff's views on Clinton do not impact the quality of this book.... Just because Hentoff doesn't like Clinton, does not mean one should give his book bad reviews. Clinton is mentioned 5 times out of a book of more than 200 pages, and Hentoff's points are valid. The Clinton administration has presided over a vast expansion of the war on drugs which greatly curtailed civil liberties (the FBI's Carnivore system comes to mind), and has overlooked Chinese human rights violations, among other things.

Overall, I wish I could've given this book 3.5 stars. I didn't feel it was worth 4. The title of the book, "Living the Bill of Rights," makes it sound like anyone who disagrees with any of the positions promulgated in the stories somehow doesn't care about the Bill of Rights, or isn't "an authentic American." Yet that just isn't true. Many people who opposse forced busing, for example, do so because they believe in freedom of association. Hentoff is walking a fine line, and disagreement is valuable and I encourage it. But the book went just a bit too far.

It's still a valuable contribution, and the majority of the stories should make most people proud to live in a country that has a bill of rights. Hopefully it will also make people more likely to defend it.

2 out of 5 stars Rambling, undisciplined disappointment.......1999-01-28

I believe books should be reviewed on the basis of the author's intention, but with this one I can't help wishing this title simple came with a different book. It's a great idea and the subject is interesting and worthwhile and, for the most part, I'm inclined to share Hentoff's views. But he really needed an editor here. He lets himself (his personal feelings, for which he has a great deal of respect - more than he does for the reader's intelligence) get in the way of his subject. And I'm not just saying this because I was sickened by Hentoff's personal diatribes against Clinton (though I was - he is long on vitriol and short on logic, there). I'd love to read a book about inspired and inspiring Americans living the Bill of Rights, but this book ain't it. This book is a collection of everything but the kitchen sink packaged as a book about the Bill of Rights. I enjoyed parts of it and learned some things, but really! Cut it, cut it, cut it, and then publish it again with sharper focus and a clarified intention. Then any points worth making won't get lost in the egotism of the author.

5 out of 5 stars I think that this is a book that every person should read........1999-01-11

Every American should understand that the actions of people are what maintain our civil liberties, and not simply our beliefs. Hentoff has illustrated this through several stories of people from all walks of life. His writing style is easy to follow and interesting.

The book is enjoyable and inspiring.

            5 out of 5 stars 3D-Groundwater Modeling with PMWIN.......2001-11-14

PMWIN is a robust simulation system capable of modeling groundwater flow and solute transport. It is easy to use and import figures of differing formats. The GUI (graphical user interface) is user friendly. The text presents all the information, graphics and illustrations of the GUI making it easy to understand and use. I highly recommend this program.

            5 out of 5 stars 3D-Groundwater Modeling with PMWIN.......2001-07-25

I was using earlier version of pmwin and 3-d visualisation was missing. Therefore I always in preferred to work with Visual Modflow with 3-D explorer and GMS. Now using version 5 of PMWIN with 3-D explorer, I was thrilled. Really it is wounderful and quite simple. I do not find it is less than other counter part Commercial Software. Its 3-D explorer is better than Visual Modflow 3-d explorer.

5 out of 5 stars excellent primary text with latest software from start 2 end.......2001-07-24

To learn the groundwater modeling techniques, the students or the professionals need the suitable software and the textbook which explaines clearly the theory and the used software. The book must explaine the procedures step by step and from start to to the end.But nowadays, if you have not enough money to purchase the commercial modflow based software, it is a pity that you have to learn MODFLOW codes. It was the undesriable things.Hydrogeological modeling means interpretation. But there is no possibility to see visual something among the codes.I created the input and as a result output errors during the simulations with codes at the beginning. There is a good words in computer technology; Gap In Gap Out.It summurizes the best what i meant.Definitely all hydrogeologists have to know all background informations on groundwater modeling techniques and the structure of used softwares. But i think, groundwater modeling is more than a science, it is a art which must have a visual effect. So that I have looked for the best groundwater modeling book and the software since 1991.At the end, i have found, what i have ever looked for. This is this book which combines the latest modeling techniques and the latest modeling software. You can learn the latest modeling techniques written by the leading teaching experts and creators of PMWIN.This 344 pages textbook walks the practising engineers or students through the modeling process from start to finish. You don't need any other additional tool. This book has also the best groundwater modeling and contaminant transport modeling software. Especially it is the best learning asistance with example problems for the students and practising professionals.

With PMWIN ,groundwater modeling has never been so easy.It is more than a pre and post processor of MODFLOW family (88,96 or 2000);it is a great modeling environment in which you can find what you needed. You can also realize your all modeling and contaminant transport dreams with using all MOC3D, MT3D, PHT3D or RT3D family ( it was a dream for me ).

PMWIN is an advanced environment which has a digitizer, field interpolater, field generator and environment for the background images or dxf files. You can import vector or raster based images...create your own georeferenced background maps. You can interpolate your datas by using FIELDinterpolater and export your kriging results just in a minute with field generator. You can find 4 different interpolation methos. The most complex 3D preprocessing, such as surface or layer property routines take max.30 minutes. You can enter your values to cells, either in cell by cell method or in zonal method or using interchange options from the field interpolater program.

The PMWIN has a preference options the simulation can be performed either with MODFLOW 88,96 or 2000.The all datas will be controlled by the PMWIN, if needed you will be directed for the deficit inputs. After the modflow simulation has finished, the RESULTextractor gets your results in a matrix dialog. If you prefer to open your datas in an other application such as SURFER, it is also possible, you can export your matrix result. PMWIN creates two output files; one of them USGS's *.nam file, the other is the PMWIN's *.pm5 file. For example if you have only GE, you can also visualize your modflow code simulation results in GE environment because GE reads the modflows *.nam files.

If you have GE (it is an optional, low cost 3D visualization tool.It is the cheapest, the best and the easiest tool in the industry).I have tried the all other visulalzation tools, GE is the best, GE is the simple. If you wonder about the prices, it app.250 USD.The most complex and troublous datas will be shown so clearly in 2 minutes.PMWIN and GE or some other add on modules work seamlessly and perfect. The author and the programmer Prof.Wen-Hsing CHAING had thought everything.I have examined PMWIN with the most complex problems, the program has never stooped or the operating system has never collapsed. The PMWIN 5.1.7 permits 250.000 cells but with MF2K add on modules it can be reached up 640.000 cells. Again no problem, no colapse in system. If your operating system is stable, it works so unique.

If you are an unexperienced modeler or beginner,it is not problem. After one or two day with this book; definitely you will become more familiar. It is so simple that the visualization processes take just 2 minutes...you can create your own animations and import your animation scenes in many digital formats such as *.BMP, *.GIF and modify there and present.

With some additional add on modules which have been created again by the Authors of the book, you can merge with other modeling tools such as RT3D or PHT3D.I have contacted to Prof.wen-Hsing CHAING and learned that there will be a lot of add on modules...one of them is the surface water/groundwater interaction modules.I have also learned that GE will be used for the presentation of the surface waters and the meteorological datas. It means, PMWIN will be the best software in this industry. Many of the commercial modflow processors are still using Modflow 96. The MODFLOW 2000, PEST-ASP and the late version of the UCODE had been added in April 2001 to PMWIN.And it works without any problem since April 2001. I have contacted and got more additional information about the PMWIN and the book. I am gratefull to Prof.Kinzelbach and Prof.Wen-Hsiang CHAING who has written 3D GROUNDWATER MODELING WITH PMWIN and created, developed the PMWIN, GE and MODFLOW 2000 add on modules.I have found the best software and the best TEXTBOOK.This book is really excellent and can be advised both to the students, practical engineers and advanced groundwater modelers, as a compherensive guide to modeling and complete the exercises to refresh their knowledges. And also... Especially for the professors , this book will be an excellent primary text for a university course, or as asupplement to an existing curriculum.

5 out of 5 stars A recommandable book and software for groundwater modeling.......2001-03-27

PMWIN is an excellent software for the simulation of groundwater flow and transport. This comprehensive software makes it easy to setup own groundwater problems. It comprises a lot of additional programs and useful tools which help to describe and analyse a problem very clearly. For example, a model for the simulation of single and multi-species transport is included as well as the full version of PEST, the famous code for parameter estimation. Many features facilitate showing and printing of the results. The book contains a lot of elucidations and examples. Some features are still in development but should be released soon, like 3D visualization and geochemical model. Alltogether a very recommandable book and software.

            Book Description

The overall goal of this calculus-based text is to provide an introduction to physics with a modern point of view. It emphasizes the atomic nature of matter, macro-micro connections, and modeling complex physical systems. The approach is designed to go beyond low-level physics and to build upon readers' prior preparation.

The first volume deals with mechanics and thermal physics in a unified way, with strong emphasis on atomic-level description and analysis. The ball-and-spring model of solids is a major theme, culminating in computing the specific heat as a function of temperature for an Einstein solid, using the concepts of statistical mechanics.

1 out of 5 stars Aviod This Book At All Costs.......2007-07-09

This book does a horrible and insufficient job of introducing the student to physics. The book lacks examples to help understand the concepts. And because our authors dont have enough time to write up a solutions manual to their difficult problems we never gain an understanding on solving problems only partly understanding the theoretical.

            5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2007-06-12

In my freshman physics class we used this book. I had already taken an AP Physics course in high school but still did not know many things. The AP physics class actually confused me. This book has been able to clearify everything! It was a very readable book which is hard to say about textbooks.

5 out of 5 stars A solid foundation in physics.......2004-06-24

This is a great book. It is a book you can read through, it reads better than any other text book I have read. It is not like most physics text books. If you are looking for just formulas and problems to plug and chug you need to look somewhere else, this is a far deeper book than that. This is for people that actually want a solid backbone in physics learn the how and why, understand the concepts. The problems in this volume can be pretty difficult, but the information to solve them are in the chapter, The book makes you think for your self. The questoins are structured so you can not memorize problem types and the equations to plug and chug, they test understanding. The result of this approch is you are far better positioned to handle physics problems that you have never seen before, where people that just want plug and chug fall apart on problems they have never seen.

If you are taking a class with this book and problems are assigned from the book and you have not read the book and you want to just pick information you need to solve the problem... its not easy finding information in the book, you have to read it.

This book and Vol 2 which I highly recommend also have taught me the most about physics... before this book and I was asked a Physics question that was "why" oriented alot of the time I would be I dont know I just know this is the formula you use. Now I know alot of the "whys".

In alot of other Physics text books from chapter to chapter the information presented seems to be completely disjoint no real connection. This book connects chapter and chapter.

The book does have some problems where you write computer simulations, but the language they use is free to download and pretty easy to learn compared to most programming languages. If you dont want to write the programs... you can download alot of them from the authors website to look over.

There are different versions of this book out there, sometime in 2003 they re-printed and fixed some errors in vol 1 and vol 2... I think the ISBN number was changed when this happened... I would check with the publishers website to make sure you are purchasing the most upto date version.

I have the old versions before the re-print with corrections... and I am going to go buy the new re-prints, normally I would not bother, but the two volumes are such great books.

From the Physics classes I took with the two volumes, the people that did not like this book were people that did not want to understand the subject they just wanted to be able to memorize types of problems and the equations to plug and chug. They did not want to read the book, they just wanted through the class with the least amount of effect, understanding was not a priority.

5 out of 5 stars the only truly innovative intro physics text available.......2003-05-08

I've used this text for my calculus-based intro physics course since before it was officially available (since fall 1999). There is no other text like it. The emphases on estimation, programming, and real world problems (as opposed to sanitized plug and chug problems) make for a VERY different experience for students and instructors alike. In my opinion, the highlight of Volume I is the treatment of energy concepts in chapters 4-6. No other text is as meticulous with terminology as this one. Instructors will have to rethink what and how they were first taught about this material. Volume I culminates in showing how mechanics and thermodynamics are united via statistical mechanics, and the approach is extraordinary. Students using this text will be better prepared for future courses than their peers who use the traditional texts; there is research to back this up. The authors provide unrivaled user support too.

            5 out of 5 stars amazing!.......2003-02-10

I had the privilege of learning freshmen physics from the authors. The authors and their book present a new way of learning physics. Although the exercises are nontraditional, I find them to be more insightful than simple "plug and chug" problems.
