Miss Marple Novels.......2002-04-09

This collection includes: The Mirror Crack'd, A Carribbean Mystery, Nemesis, What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw! and The Body in the Library. I liked that each novel began with a list of characters and a brief description of them. My favorite of these novels is Nemesis. Miss Marple solves an old case and gets an innocent man out of jail. All the novels are good mysteries. My only complaint is that they are not in chronological order. The Mirror Crack'd is the first novel in the collection but chronologically it is the oldest and it gives away a clue to a later novel in the collection--The Body in the Library.

Using American legal history, politics and jurisprudence, this study considers the degree to which American courts have maintained their autonomy and withstood political pressure, when the sovereignty and property rights of Native American tribes were at issue.

In 1879, a chief of the Ponca tribe, when released from military custody by an order of a U.S. district court, pronounced the use of law “a better way” to redress Indian grievances. This study explores the development of legal doctrine affecting Native American tribes by courts and commissions in the United States beginning with seminal court cases of the early 19th century and continuing through to the 1980’s. Whether the law ever was a better way for Native Americans is a question of fundamental importance not only with regard to the rights - or even the survival - of American Indian tribes but also with respect to the claim of the American legal system to be equally fair and just to all groups in society regardless of their economic and political power.

Description:
Institutional anomie theory (IAT) suggests that high crime rates in America can be attributed to the commitment to the goal of material success. In this regard, particular emphasis is placed on the motivations derived from the profit goal of economic institutions that dominate the American culture. To date, IAT was only applied to property and violent crime. This study used Uniform Crime Report (UCR) and Census Bureau data to examine the applicability of IAT to a form of white-collar crime, embezzlement, as defined by the UCR. Results provided mixed support for IAT. Limitations and future research directions are discussed.
