    Book Description

    Professional financial advisors will prosper with this financial planning conference between two covers.

    The collapse of do it yourself investing has created a huge market for professional financial advisors. Wirehouse representatives, lawyers, CPAs, and others are entering the field. While a few individuals have become wildly successful, many planners struggle to survive.

    Success as a financial planner depends more on an individual's overall management skills than his or her stock picking ability, says veteran financial writer Richard Koreto. For the first time ever, he has compiled advice from some of the nation's leading financial services professionals into a single book. &Iun It Like a Business: Top Financial Planners Weigh In on Practice Management takes readers step by step from starting on their own to selling a practice at the end of their career. Each chapter features one or more expert ""guides"" insight from recognized leaders in the profession explaining how they did it successfully.

    In addition, Richard Koreto draws on the scores of conferences and seminars he's participated in over the years. Readers will learn how to:

    * Set up an office.

    * Attract the best clients.

    * Create a marketing plan.

    * Manage a staff.

    * Choose effective strategic partners.

    1 out of 5 stars Waste of Time.......2005-07-05

    I've had email communications with Koreto and found him to be arrogant, surley, and intolerant of anyone who doesn't agree with him.

    Also, I'm familiar with some of his "experts" who post their drivel on Koreto's magazine's website. As a financial professional, I wouldn't want anything that they have to offer.

    1 out of 5 stars Save your money, this one isn't worth owning.......2005-05-10

    One of the things a prudent business owner should seek to avoid when adding to the library are books that are the same garbage they've already read somewhere else. This book is a quick and dirty version of several other author's materials, rehashed and reworded, with some quotes from people who aren't high on the list of those one would want to emulate. Plus, anyone that quotes Nancy Langdon Jones on the first page as an "expert" on how to build a successful practice cannot be taken seriously. Dick Koreto has never been a financial planner, nor has he been a successful business owner. His selection of so-called "experts" shows how little he really knows about what it takes to survive and thrive in the craft of advice. Save your money and time, and keep browsing for more suitable material.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2004-04-28

    Koreto knows the financial planning/investment advice industry very well. He's done an excellent job of gathering the best practices from the top people in the industry and putting them in a book that is practical and easy to read.

    If you are a financial planner/investment advisor or are thinking about becoming one, this book is a must-read. Regardless of how long you've been in the industry, you will get value from this book. Plus you'll just enjoy it.

    Book Description

    Each step in the process is introduced separately so students can concentrate on mastering each skill before attacking another one. Although the book was developed for a four-credit course, the process approach also works well in courses with a varying number of credits and styles of instruction. Topics covered include an introduction to the law; legal analysis; the basic office memorandum; the more complicated memorandum; a brief to the trial court; appellate advocacy; and oral advocacy.

    I found this book to be very helpful. It walks through the steps of legal writing one at a time, in easy to read and understand plain English. There are also helpful examples. I had to use Neumann for my Legal Writing class, but ditched him and used this book instead. Now that I am in Appellate Advocacy, I find myself coming back to use this book again.

                          Product Description

                          Following the exciting exploration of hot vent and cold seep ecosystems, the rediscovery of cold-water coral ecosystems with high-technology instrumentation is currently another hot topic in multidisciplinary marine research. Conventionally, coral reefs are regarded as restricted to warm and well-illuminated tropical seas, not associated with cold and dark waters of higher latitudes. However, ongoing scientific missions have shed light on the global significance of this overlooked ecosystem. Cold-water coral ecosystems are involved in the formation of large seabed structures such as reefs and giant carbonate mounds, and they represent unexploited paleo-environmental archives of earth history. Like their tropical cousins, cold-water coral ecosystems harbour rich species diversity. Despite the great water depths, commercial interests overlap more and more with the coral occurrences. Human activities already impinge directly on cold-water coral reefs causing severe! damage to this vulnerable ecosystem. In this volume, the current key institutions involved in cold-water coral research have contributed 62 state-of-the-art articles from geology and oceanography to biology and conservation.

                            Book Description

                            This comprehensive treatment of the fundamental principles and applications of NEXAFS spectroscopy develops all concepts from an elementary level, presenting a unified picture of the latest theoretical and experimental results. The power of this technique is demonstrated, in particular, in the application to low-Z molecules bonded to surfaces, systems of special interest in surface chemistry, where NEXAFS reveals the electronic and structural properties of the molecules. While researchers and students without extensive prior knowledge of X-ray absorption spectroscopy are catered for by the systematic presentation of the underlying concept, practicing spectroscopists will find here details of state-of-the-art instrumentation in analysis techniques, and results, along with tabulated information about the various molecular adsorption systems that have already been studied by NEXAFS.

                              Description:
                              We apply synchrotron radiation assisted X-ray fluorescence (SR-XRF), SR-XRF mapping as well as micro- and conventional X-ray absorption fine structure (@m-XAFS and XAFS) spectroscopies in order to study the bonding environment of Fe and Zn in vitrified samples that contain electric arc furnace dust from metal processing industries. The samples are studied in the as-cast state as well as after annealing at 900^oC. The SR-XRF results demonstrate that annealing does not induce any significant changes in the distribution of either Fe or Zn, in both the as-cast and annealed glasses. The @m-XAFS spectra recorded at the Fe-K and Zn-K edges reveal that the structural role of both Fe and Zn remains unaffected by the annealing procedure. More specifically, Fe forms both FeO"6 and FeO"4 polyhedra, i.e. acts as an intermediate oxide while Zn occupies tetrahedral sites.

                                Description:
                                Aqueous extracts from diesel engine exhaust particulate matter (soot) obtained by hot pressurized water extraction were subject to near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy with respect to the carbon K (1s) absorption edge at a synchrotron radiation source. The highly intense X-ray beam caused a significant decrease of the carboxyl peak intensity at 288eV, to the benefit of a newly arising carbonate peak at 291.2eV. The same phenomenon was found in alginic acid when exposed to the same conditions. With knowledge of the molecular structure of alginic acid, we are able to propose a simple photochemical reaction scenario that describes a decay path for carboxyl in soot: the radiolysis of carboxylate into carbonate in diesel soot during irradiation.

                                    Book Description

                                    For over a hundred years, the Oblates of Mary Immaculate operated St. Mary's Mission, a residential school just outside of Mission, BC. Now for the first time, the stories of former students are told in Amongst God's Own. Award-winning author Terry Glavin has woven the accounts of 35 native elders into a bold, uncompromising narrative of life at St. Mary's.

                                    Starting with the Oblates' arrival and their establishment of the Mission on the Fraser River, Glavin tracks the chronology of St. Mary's through the 20th century, revealing the Order's religious, political and social underpinnings. Native voices recount the realities of day-to-day life at the school. Moving beyond the prevalent discourse of oppression and victimhood, the result is a groundbreaking portrait of this place and time that illuminates 200 years of native-white interaction in BC.

                                    Enhancing the stories are over 60 images culled from personal and archival collections. Amongst God's Own is a unique record of peoples at a crossroads, caught in a clash between government and religious authority whose consequences reverberate to this day.

                                      Book Description

                                      Between the mid-15th and the mid-18th century, every European country bordering the Atlantic (and some that did not) acquired land overseas. But, as these imperial powers rushed to grab colonies, the world began to grow too small for these competing adventurers. Continuing the story he began in The Age of Reconnaissance, the author of the highly praised History of Civilization series now deals with the second phase of empire--its expanded operations, collisions, mutinies, alterations of course, and changing attitude toward the subject races.
