I thought this book had excellent ideas. There are not many other books that give advice to Latinos regarding success in the business world.

Advice for Getting Ahead.......2005-12-22

Includes advice and strategies from a nationally acclaimed expert on cultural diversity in the workplace. The National Hispanic Employee Association recommended it as "required reading for every Hispanic college student".

Take the good. Leave out the bad!.......2001-06-12

While Job's book is an easy read, and there is some good practical advice in it, I would suggest that Latino's who read this book do so with caution and healthy skepticism. In the book Job tries to advise Latino's on how to climb the Corporate latter while being Latin. He talks about how Latinos should blend their culture with that of the corporate world. My problem with the book comes via the ingredients he uses in his suggested blend. While he does incorporate many of the corporate or white culture (which in his book seem to be interchangeable )it is hard to find where in this blend is the Latin culture.(to few and far between for my liking) He does not give Latinos enough credit. In fact he urges Latinos to detach themselves from their culture. While this suggestion does have some validity to some extent, Job goes as far as suggesting to the reader that they should avoid playing Salsa at their own party in order to fit in with your white corporate co-workers and counter part. As a Latino myself I found this book offensive. I think he tries to send the message that Latino's can find the proper balance of culture to fit in the Corporate world. Unfortunately for Job the message that comes glaring through is : If Latinos want to make it in the corporate world be prepare to cater to white employers and co-workers or you will not be accepted. He say's nothing about being true to yourself or your culture. He makes it seem as being true to your culture and becoming a successful Latino in the corporate world is an impossibility. He even uses the phrase "don't be afraid to sell out." I am sorry, while this formula may have worked for him, I am not ready to sell out my heritage. I am about to enter the corporate world soon-- and when I become a successful Latino, I'll be able to look back proudly and say, what the great Frank Sinatra once sang so elegantly, "I did it my way!"

Not as good as you think.......2001-06-11

I was quite disappointed with this book. It starts off great, with great advice, but as each new chapter begins, one begins to see that what Mr. Job is advising Latinos is to basically sell out until you are in a senior enough position to get away with staying true to your identity.

We are at a time where, Latinos are growing in great numbers and where Americans are embracing the Latino culture (think Buena Vista Social Clun, salsa dancing, the "Latin Explosion"). I think that now Latinos have more latitude in their behavior at work to stay true to their culture, not like Mr. Job suggests. He gives extreme examples of how people do not even serve latin-american food when their bosses come over. Not serving Latin-American food or playing Latin-American music, seems very extreme. I think your colleagues will probably appreciate this and see it as an opportunity to know more about your culture.

While Mr. Job does make some good points, it seems the message he's trying to send out is to sell out, don't feel guilty about it, your career is #1, then comes family AND YOU MUST FOLLOW THESE RULES if you want to advance. He contradicts himself so much throughout this book, he tells you that you will maintain 2 identities, your corporate one and the one where you are Latino, however, he then goes on to show examples where people lose their Latino identities and take on this corporate identity both inside and out of the office. He tells you to dress like them, talk like them, be like them, essentially, wow where's the sense of self in this book.

He does devote one chapter to "Living the American Dream Latin Style," which basically reenforces the notion that the american dream latn style can be achieved after one is in a high enough position, because as he puts it, "The more successful you are and the higher you rise within your organization, the more latitude you are allowed in your behavior, especially regarding the very cultural differences that set you apart from other executives in the first place."

I recommend that those who do buy this book, to extract the good advice and points, especially about challenging stereotypes, but to be weary of the message he's giving about losing your identity.

This is an excellent book for both latinos and non-latinos. He speaks to all people. A must have for the next generation.

Breakthrough Thinking on the Creation of Value.......2002-09-05

This book was written for decision-makers in organizations which are in current or imminent need of (a) benchmarking and comparing the value of their growth opportunities, (b) aligning the value of private growth opportunities with public market valuations, and (c) replacing complex calculations with simple and transparent methods. Amram re-examines and re-evaluates several of the core concepts which she and co-author Nalin Kulatilaka discussed in a previous work, Real Options: Managing Strategic Investment in an Uncertain World. However, as she explains in her Preface, she has since drawn two strong conclusions. "First, in many [but not all] applications, real options is not the right tool. I'll raise this issue through this book [Value Sweep] and show how to combine real options with other strategic perspectives. Second, decision analysis (and decision analysis coupled with real options) is quite an expansive approach; it can handle a lot of detail. Often, however, the detail overwhelms the rationale."

Here are several important questions which many organizations are now struggling to answer:

1. How can the value of growth from our new products and innovations be compared to the value of existing business?

2. Is there any rationale behind our valuations based on Internet growth expectations? Is there a way to identify and track the changing value of growth?

All organizations embark on a new "journey" at the beginning of their fiscal year and must make hundreds (thousands?) of decisions with regard to the allocation of their resources. Many of those decisions have profoundly serious implications...both positive and negative. Whether or not an organization survives may perhaps depend on some of those decisions. I recommend in the strongest terms possible that Martha Amram's book be read and then re-read by every decision-maker, regardless of the size or nature of her or his organization. Obviously it cannot ensure a successful "journey" but it can certainly help to improve the odds.

Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to read Heidi Mason and Tim Rohner's The Venture Imperative.

Osborn Skews Evidence for a desired result.......2006-03-26

This guy should go into business writing for faux news with this kind of cowardly research:

1. Osborn defines an atrocity as the murder, torture, or mutilation of civilians, the wounded and prisoners. Different definitions would obviously produce different totals.

2. Osborn does not count Indian deaths on the Trail of Tears (because these were allegedly unintentional.) Probably looked at old US Army documentation, go figure.

3. However, he does count episodes of post-mortem mutilation, even of combatants killed in open battle, because there were more instances of Indians doing this.

Osborn does a great job spinning history to his desired white man not as savage as evil Indians approach.

A special thanks to Wikipedia for highlighting Osborns fantasized reality.

A History of the Indian Wars .......2005-11-17

"Wild Frontier" is the story of the conflicts between Indians and Whites in the United States from the first Indian/White war in Jamestown in 1622 until Wounded Knee in 1890. The author characterizes this period as a single war lasting 268 years and he describes many of the thousands of atrocities which occured during that period giving approximately equal weight to those committed by Indians and Whites. Scattered throughout his narrative are many quotes which illustrate the attitudes of the two races toward each other over the course of this long, sordid history.

The heart of the book is found in the three appendices. Appendix A lists known intertribal Indian wars; Appendix B lists the number of deaths caused by Indian atrocities and Appendix C lists the number of indian deaths caused by settlers. The author totes up about 9,000 deaths of Whites attributed to Indians and 7,000 deaths of Indians attributed to Whites.

These long lists are admirably conceived -- but by no means complete casualty lists. For example, the book lists only about 400 Whites killed by Indians during the French and Indian War. I think the total -- from what I have read -- should be much higher. Not listed are Braddock's battle in 1755 and St Clair's in 1791 in which the Indians killed hundreds of White soldiers. Also, the list is probably incomplete for the Whites killed by Apaches and Comanches in the Southwest during the 19th century. On the other side of the conflict, the murder of many, many Indians went unrecorded.

The book is balanced in that it does not minimize or excuse atrocities by either Whites or Indians. The conquest of the United States from the Indians was a long and brutal affair and this book gives you a capsule history of many of the major battles and events in the war.

The other reviewers did a good job synopsizing the content of this very good book. I don't want to repeat them so I will note a few things that stood out for me in an effort to not be repetitive

First of all, I found "Wild Frontiers" to be a very interesting compendium of the subject matter which is documented cases of murder in the 300 years of conflict between the Native American and the encroaching stream of immigrants seeking greener pastures.

These new arrivals had goods the Native Americans were interested in after being stuck in 5000 B.C. for 6000 years. The immigrants were able to capitalize on competitions and animosities that had existed for eons between tribes. The Native Americans never seemed to unify to a point where they could effectively stop the onslaught of expansionism. So they killed, often brutally. The settlers did too but the Native Americans culture seemed to hold torture in high regard. Lots of examples are held within. No disrespect meant for the Native Americans, the torture was simply part of the culture, good or bad. Yes I know the Settlers broke every treaty ever made, and I further know it is not fair to judge the past by the mores of today. But slowly burning someone to death over the course of 4 days or cutting someones lower intestine out and tying it to a tree while you beat them so they are made to walk around the tree while they slowly unravel their large and small intestine must have hurt. It's hard not to wince a little.

I decided to read this book after reading Eckert's most excellent "Frontiersmen". It reaffirmed some of the brutality laid out in that amazing story of the Kentucky and Ohio Frontier.

I think scholars would have a hard time debunking any of the reports from this well researched book

I gave this book 4 stars because at times the writing was choppy especially when attempting to segway (sp) into a new story.

Very informative and mostly well written book that I read quickly. I recommend this book to all interested.

A fascinating read about some American history all of us might want to forget. Osborn with incredible insight and detail provides the best account ever written about that period. Osborn loves America enough to examine the good and the bad, I would highly recommend to anyone interested in American History.

An excellent, excellent book describing a side of the American-Indian war that is frequently hinted at but never fully explored. Thorough and well-documented. The author presents a serious account rather than sentimentalizing the facts of our nation's history.

An ideal primer for those who don't have the time to read the vast volume of conspiracy literature. This book will not only introduce you to perennial conspiracy favorites involving JFK, the CIA, UFOs, Marilyn Monroe, and Jim Morrison but also more obscure conspiracies. There's that dead reporter in the bathtub. He was working on something called the Octopus file involving stolen software and arms smuggling. And what about those machines in the polling booth?
