          OVERVIEW
Depth of theoretical content combined with current events and policy debates makes The World Economy: Trade and Finance, Fifth Edition an excellent choice for a broad range of trade and finance courses with an international economic focus. Yarbrough and Yarbrough discuss countries, trade policies and economic applications with the inclusion of more institutional detail and in-text examples than found in competing textbooks.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A thorough and comprehensive text to understanding the priciples and applications of international trade.......2007-03-07

Beth and Robert Yarborough have written a comprehensive text that examines the basis for trade and its contribution to ecoonomic growth and development among nations. As trade comes from general economic theory, the authors carefully present and analyze economic principles and how they can be applied to international markets and policies. The basic foundation for the study of economics is that humans have limitless desires but finite resources and alternatives available to them to attain these desires. International trade creates an interrelationship among nations where sociities may derive benefits from mutual exchanges of products and services that provide for more choices for humans to attain their wants and needs.

The authors present excellent examples of case studies and policy issues throughout the course of the book. The 21 chapters are written in a clear, straightforward manner with numerous graphical analyses to lend support to trade concepts and principles. The authors do not lose the interest of the reader with intricate quantitative formulas and calculations that many economics books often utilize. They focus on real world issues and challenges that countries often face when dealing with trade policies. The problems and questions at the end of each chapter are also quite practical and involve real world situations.

The Yarboroughs have done an excellent job in presenting an academic text for the study of international trade. This text is suitable for both business and non-business students, even those who may just have a cursory knowledge of economics. It would provide an excellent foundation for those wishing to understand how the global economy functions given that international trade is an often discussed subject and one of considerable significance in the world of marketing and commerce.

3 out of 5 stars Useful, but Utilitarian.......2006-10-19

I can't imagine using this book outside of a college course. It accomplishes what it sets out to do by reinforcing the economic principles form the book, and it tends to use real numbers, and a fair number of real world examples. Still it's just a work book, a mind numbing workbook, the type of which most people who went through High School should be familiar with.

The book isn't 'fun.' But that's not what I expected. To it's credit the conceptual questions it ask are often relative. For example, one question was about "Foreign Oil (palm and fruit oil) producers" and the advertising they use to increase demand overseas for their product. Things like that are useful, and help keep the class relevant.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Choice for a Book.......2005-10-12

This book is pretty good as far as text books go. For those people who are very analytical and love things explained in numeric/math forms this is the book for you. I do wish it was more conceptual aka more import/export demand/supply oriented. Though if you're an econ person this shouldn't be too bad.

3 out of 5 stars Could be better..........2004-07-24

Keeping my comments simple, this textbook is too verbose. Although the material is quite comprehensive, it suffers from poor organization that makes for a tiresome read. The authors should consider highlighting or indenting important concepts and equations for better readability.

          2 out of 5 stars frustrating.......2000-05-29

This book takes the time to explain easy concepts in great detail (sometimes rearranging mathematical equations in trivial ways), but it fell short in explaining the difficult concepts. For example, on p532, it appears that the balance of payments is always zero for every completed transaction just because of accounting convention and not because of economic equilibrium; this doesn't seem right. Also, it makes some assumptions that could use some more discussion (for example, on p493, it states that supply of foreign-currency-denominated deposits is not influenced by the exchange rate, but is that really true?)

                Book Description

The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) is an association of agricultural research centers that together represent an important force in genetic conservation of crops and their wild relatives. Under the CGIAR umbrella, the centers are collectively custodians of international genetic resource collections for crops that provide seventy-five percent of the world's food energy. This volume considers the status of the key collections, in each case providing details of the botany, distribution and agronomy of the species concerned, in addition to extensive information on germplasm conservation and use. The book presents a unique synthesis of knowledge drawn from the CGIAR centers, providing an invaluable source of reference for all those concerned with monitoring, maintaining and utilizing the biodiversity of our staple crop species.

                                          Book Description

"One can do no better than reading Gerald Holton for exploring the scientific mind. These essays are rich with a deep understanding of the scientific enterprise, the personalities of its practitioners, and a passion for communicating the history and culture of science." Alan Lightman, MIT

From the opening pages this book presents an authoritative and accessible guide to the place of science in our culture today. Gerald Holton shows how the work of Einstein and his followers not only transformed science but also changed the non-scientific world, from literature and visual arts to philosophy and psychology. The recently found love letters between Albert Einstein and his first wife, Mileva Maric, are used as a keyhole for studying sympathetically how the young couple tried to fashion for themselves a life based both on their tumultuous passion for each other and their love for science. This provocative volume concludes with a gallery of finely drawn profiles of notable physicists including Robert Oppenheimer, P.W. Bridgman, I.I. Rabi, Richard Feynman, and the philosopher-scientist Michael Polanyi. Library of Science Book Club Selection

There are many attributes associated with scientists, from the solitary genius (rarely true), to the mad (almost exclusively myth), to the dispassionate observer of nature (only partially true). Each of these attributes is addressed in this book, along with some of basic philosophical principles of science. Holton begins the book by describing the only scientist everyone knows, Albert Einstein. The equivalent of a rock star in the early part of the twentieth century, he had a level of celebrity that no scientist has had since. It is likely that only Archimedes and Newton matched the level of awe the public applied to him.
However, much of the emphasis is on Einstein's love affair with Mileva Maric, where he is displayed as a man of considerable passion, and not just for physics. Einstein comes across as a young man of great confidence, yet having a need for companionship and close personal relationships. Some of the correspondence between Einstein and Mileva is published, and the point is to show that even Einstein was not a solitary genius, although he is often portrayed as such.
The second segment of the book is a series of essays concerning the role of science and the scientist in culture. Even the most scientifically illiterate person is well aware of the significant role that science and the technological offshoots have on civilization. Nevertheless, scientists cannot observe without altering, interpreting and expressing their human roots, so some of the points deal with the fundamentals of what scientists are. Some of the points are quite radical, such as questions concerning the credibility of scientific research and whether there are indeed any truths to be found.
Segment three is a series of short biographies of some of the greatest characters in science in the twentieth century: J. Robert Oppenheimer, Percy W. Bridgman, I. I. Rabi, Richard Feynmann and Michael Polanyi. Certainly the greatest character of them all was Feynmann, whose most amazing characteristic was his insatiable curiosity and willingness to try almost anything. As you read about his many interests, you wonder how he ever found time to do Nobel Prize caliber physics.
The closing segment contains two essays, the first on whether the history of science has a place in the teaching of science and the conclusion is a heavily qualified yes. The role of equipment and in-class experiments is covered in the second. Lectures are valuable, but there is nothing like a demonstration of a physical principle to get the point across. While I remember nothing that was said in my high school classes, I do remember some of the classroom demonstrations, such as static electricity.
Science is performed by humans, so like everything else, it has a culture, has results that can be suspect and alters all that comes in contact with it. Since science comes in contact with everything, even in the most insular of societies, how science and society react to each other is a significant component of civilization. Holton examines this from many different perspectives, from the passionate scientist to those skeptical of the scientific mind. Whether you agree with the statements or not, you will benefit from having read them.

In Einstein, History, and Other Passions, Gerald Holton, a professor of physics and the history of science at Harvard University, dispels the idea that science is creatively inferior to the arts. By focusing on the life and work of Albert Einstein, Holton illustrates that the practical nature of science flows from the creative pursuit of knowledge for knowledge's sake. Holton reminds us that some of Einstein's greatest work was conducted at a time when he was madly in love and argues that scientists, like artists, are driven by a passion to explore and create. They do science, he says, not for prestige, but simply because they find it impossible not to.

                                            Book Description

Through his rich exploration of Einstein's thought, Gerald Holton shows how the best science depends on great intuitive leaps of imagination, and how science is indeed the creative expression of the traditions of Western civilization.
