Merrill and Donna are in the "time management business". Because they work in Grandville (Michigan - USA) I was quite interested. Grandville is the closest harbor to my birth place. It was also Christian Dior birthplace and childhood paradise. This would not be enough to give 4 stars to this book. In fact, even if this book looks boring to me. Very classical typography, layout. No illustration. Despite of all these drawbacks professional experience of Merrill and Donna are very helpful and clearly distilled in this book. Buy it with Outlook 2000 software.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Book!.......1999-12-17

I actually read this in 1995, but I've recommended it to so many people over the years that I thought I should give it an endorsement here. It completely transformed the way I work. If you want to become organized, efficient, and productive, get, read, and, most important, USE this book!

          Book Description

“In ‘The Social Meanings of Money and Property’ Kenneth O. Doyle has produced an intriguing study that lays the groundwork for understanding the role played by money and property among individuals, groups and even nationalities. The toughminded/tender minded dichotomy presented in The Social Meanings of Money and Property can also be viewed as the Conservative/Liberal conflict. Conservatives demand self-reliance and Liberals crave nurture. The Social Meanings of Money and Property is first a psychological treatise, second it is a stimulant for complex thought.” —W.J. Rayment, Conservativebookstore.com “A most important study… in the grand style of a Joseph Schumpeter…. [It] will reward both the expert and the general reader.” —Matthew Lamb, Boston College “Kenneth O. Doyle’s book, The Social Meanings of Money and Property, is one of the most wide-ranging and scholarly books I have ever read. . . .The comprehensiveness of the scholarship Doyle amasses will undoubtedly stimulate scholars from a variety of disciplines to test out the implications of the model.” –Wilbert J. McKeachie, University of Michigan Why would a man with more money than he could ever spend risk career, family, and freedom for a modest increase in net worth? Why would a woman who never cared at all about investments perjure herself for a better divorce settlement? Why do people of some cultures seem inclined toward economic success? What are the fundamental differences between conservatives and liberals, or capitalists and socialists? Is there any hope of rapprochement between Economic Man and Psychological Man? In this book, Professor Kenneth O. Doyle spells out a theoretical system for understanding these practical, everyday problems, using a conceptual framework for studying the social meanings of money and property. He finds fundamental meaning in the concept of talisman. We use money and property, he proposes, to protect ourselves from fears characteristic of our personalities: the fear of incompetence, the fear of abandonment, the fear of disarray, and the fear of constraint. The Social Meanings of Money and Property will be of interest to scholars and students across a number of disciplines, including, but by no means limited to, psychology, sociology, and economics.

          5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read to Understand the Money-Mind Connection.......2001-06-24

This is a brave and fascinating book. It gives a clear-eyed examination of the connection between love and money, and how easily one can be confused by the other. The book brings together highly original ideas about philosophy, law, religion, history, and personality theory, with the compelling subtext of people's feelings of anxiety or confidence as they relate to money (or the lack of it). Bottom line: The book explores how people use money and property to communicate with one another. Not an easy read, but well worth it. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK.......2001-06-12

This book gives the reader an interesting challenge. That is to look at money from a perspective that is challenging and inspirational. With useful information and piercing insight the author uses his unique mastery of the issue to delve into areas which have long been forgotten in the plastic pushing fancy of commercialism.

With important implications for academics, practitioners, or anyone who thinks they "know" about money this book is a MUST READ for all. Give this one for Fathers Day and get a hearty thanks! Put aside some time because once you get inside this book, you will not want to put it down. Once read you will see the offerings of money and property with a robust and deeper understanding.

Integrating and weaving cultures, psychology, and meaning with skill and grace this author takes an approach that is at once searching and at times searing. Find your own Talisman with the help of these pages. A Mighty Thank You to the author for your adventurous exposition!!!!!!

Although I am respectful of the fact that the writer deserves the right to his opinion, he could have expressed his feelings about the book here as a comment. To charge $5.99 to read comments like (for those of you that live in New Jersey, a quadrant is...), is nothing but a rip off. I am sorry I trusted Amazon to as a provider of value on this one.

            Book Description

As we enter the twenty-first century, every opinion, interest, and lifestyle known to man seems to have found a home somewhere on the Internet. The new technology and the new form of commerce it has generated have opened up much debate about how to deal with traditional business issues: in particular, privacy, taxation, and contracts. In October 1999 a group of prominent executives, Hoover fellows, and academics met to discuss Internet public policy, focusing initially on privacy and taxation but then expanding the debate to include issues of contract and jurisdiction as well. Public Policy and the Internet presents the initial findings that framed those discussions and outlines proposals that should guide policymaking in the future. In "Privacy and Electronic Commerce," Mary J. Cronin surveys opinion and position papers on how to deal with online privacy, the meaning of privacy in electronic commerce, and the arguments between advocates of self-regulation and legislation. Charles E. McLure Jr. looks at fundamental questions of tax policy and the Internet in his contribution, "The Taxation of Electronic Commerce: Background and Proposal," and outlines his proposal for a single, uniform nationwide base for sales and use taxes. Margaret Jane Radin's "Retooling Contract for the Digital Era" evaluates the crisis for contract brought on by the advent of electronic commerce. Taken together, the viewpoints presented in Public Policy and the Internet reinforce the judgment that the future of e-commerce will have as much to do with how policy issues are resolved as with how any technological challenge is overcome.

                    Book Description

This is a richly illustrated reference book that provides a unique, comprehensive, and up-to-date survey of the rocks and structures of fault and shear zones. These zones are fundamental geologic structures in the Earth's crust. Their rigorous analysis is crucial to understanding the kinematics and dynamics of the continental and oceanic crust, the nature of earthquakes, and the formation of gold and hydrocarbon deposits. To document the variety of fault-related rocks, the book presents more than six hundred photographs of structures ranging in scale from outcrop to submicroscopic. These are accompanied by detailed explanations, often including geologic maps and cross sections, contributed by over 125 geoscientists from around the world.

The book opens with an extensive introduction by Arthur W. Snoke and Jan Tullis that is itself a major contribution to the field. Fault-related rocks and their origins have long been controversial and subject to inconsistent terminology. Snoke and Tullis address these problems by presenting the currently accepted ideas in the field, focusing on deformation mechanisms and conceptual models for fault and shear zones. They define common terminology and classifications and present a list of important questions for future research. In the main, photographic part of the book, the editors divide the contributions into three broad categories, covering brittle behavior, semi-brittle behavior, and ductile behavior. Under these headings, there are contributions on dozens of subtopics with photographs from localities around the world, including several "type" areas.

The book is an unrivaled source of information about fault-related rocks and will be important reading for a broad range of earth scientists, including structural geologists, petrologists, geophysicists, and environmental specialists.

4 out of 5 stars Fault Related Rocks!.......2000-03-04

This is an excellent book and provides some of the best illustrations of fault zone rocks ever collected. The shear number of high quality photomicrographs and field photos with comments by the experts on the rocks will make it an outstanding reference for students of tectonics and petrology. This book could be easily combined with books like "Microtectonics" by Passchier and Trouw to make an advanced undergraduate or graduate course in fault zone kinematics and textures. Excellent.

                            Book Description

Thermodynamics in Materials Science, Second Edition is a clear presentation of how thermodynamic data is used to predict the behavior of a wide range of materials, a crucial component in the decision-making process for many materials science and engineering applications. This primary textbook and ongoing reference accentuates the integration of principles, strategies, and thermochemical data to generate accurate "maps" of equilibrium states, such as phase diagrams, predominance diagrams, and Pourbaix corrosion diagrams. It also recommends which maps are best suited for specific real-world scenarios and thermodynamic problems. The second edition introduces new, more user-friendly computer software, capable of converting the latest databases into the most accurate equilibrium maps yet. Each chapter presents its subject matter consistently, based on the classification of thermodynamic systems, properties, and derivations that illustrate important relationships among variables for finding the conditions for equilibrium. Each chapter also contains a summary of important concepts and relationships as well as examples and sample problems that apply appropriate strategies for solving real-world problems. The up-to-date and complete coverage of thermodynamic data, laws, definitions, strategies, and tools in Thermodynamics in Materials Science, Second Edition provides students and practicing engineers a valuable guide for producing and applying maps of equilibrium states to everyday applications in materials sciences.

I used this textbook (taught by the author) as an undergraduate, and again as a clarifier in graduate school. Not only is Dr. DeHoff's book clear and logical, it dovetails nicely with the highly regarded, and more advanced, materials thermodynamics textbook by Claude Lupis. Perhaps this is because both professors spent time at Carnagie Mellon University.

Now that Dr. DeHoff is retired, I hope that he writes an additional version of this book. He should fix some errors in the problem sets, and perhaps extend a few topics. More solution models, and a more detailed treatment of other thermodynamic plots. A discussion of the measurement of thermodynamic data would also very useful.

DeHoff and Lupis make a great combination for materials thermodynamics, along with a kinetics text like Schmalzreid.

This is a wonderful, well-written text in thermodynamics for undergraduates and graduate students as well. The unique feature of this book is the logical approach utilized for handling equilibrium in systems of varying complexity, which I believe is superior to many of the conventional approaches. Also unique is the procedure developed by the author for deriving relations between state variables. The problem sets are quite useful and should be very helpful in understanding the subject. A solution manual I believe is also available to instructors. What this book lacks for an advanced graduate student in this field, is a comprehensive treatment of solution models and more practical applications using many of the excellent thermodynamic software and databases currently available. I would hope with enough encouragement by readers (and publisher) that these topics will be included in a future, perhaps thicker edition. Many of the non-traditional topics in thermodynamics such as defect chemistry, capillarity, electrochemistry or external fields are also introduced in the text and can be quite useful too.
I had the privilege of attending this course (and others) taught by the author and would strongly recommend getting hold of the taped lectures for this course if available.

I have been using this text for a solid state thermodynamics class I am teaching. The manner in which it is organized and structured allows one to sequentially build understanding of the complicated concepts of thermodynamics one layer at a time. For example, from the table of contents one can see a progression from the concepts of thermodynamic equilibrium to one component, multiphase systems, to multicomponent, single phase systems, then to multicomponent, multiphase systems, etc. Each chapter builds upon those that preceded it, and then becomes part of the foundation for those that follow. This organization makes it much easier for the instructor to teach this difficult subject, and I think easier for the student to comprehend it. My only objection is how phase diagrams are introduced in chapters 9 and 10. I think the presentation of the "structure of phase diagrams" in chapter 9 is confusing without the material in the first section of chapter 10. All, in all, I think this is the best undergrad text for thermo in materials science.

                              Book Description

The behavior of adjacent materials at the boundary where they meet is an essential aspect of creating new engineering materials. Grain Boundary Migration in Metals is an authoritative account of the physics of grain boundary motion, written by two highly respected researchers. They provide a comprehensive overview of current knowledge regarding the migration process and how it affects microstructure evolution, focusing their treatment exclusively on the properties and behavior of grain boundaries with well defined geometry and crystallography. With their emphasis on applications-such as the characterization of microstructure and texture, recrystallization, and grain growth-the authors effectively fill the gap between the physics of grain boundary motion and its engineering practicality. The need for better microstructural design motivates permanent thrust for research in the field, and continued rapid progress appears inevitable. Grain Boundary Migration in Metals provides a solid foundation in the phenomena and serves as a valuable reference for professionals in materials science, solid state physics, and any industry engaged in metals production and the heat treatment of metals and alloys.

5 out of 5 stars Some families have all the luck...........2006-04-22

and in the Barnabas family lately that luck has turned all bad.

In the 19th century Jacoby Barnabas founded a publishing house, one that prospered and, in due time was passed along to his decendents who, for the most part carried on the business quite conventionally. The third generation was a different matter. One grandson refused to enter the business at all, another was 'to be looked after' and his brother simply disappeared. The rest managed to entangled themselves in love affairs and murder!

Enter Albert Campion (not his real name), friend of the family and amateur detective (and perhaps in line to the throne) has dropped by to take tea with the family but before the evening is over one of the family is found dead with the prime suspects being his wife and his cousin who apparently have become 'quite fond' of one another. As Campion begins to look into the matter he uncovers all sorts of things, office scandals, a long-time mistress and just how a proper businessman can vanish while walking down a London street in broad daylight.

This is the seventh in the Campion series and at this point Albert is emerging from the shadow of Lord Peter Wimsey, the character Allingham patterned him after. Albert is becoming more down to earth and focused, developing more of his own persona, although Allingham is not above making a sly reference to 'Denver' - Lord Peter's family estate.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable mystery, particularly for those who are fans of this series or of mysteries of this era. The characters are well done, the plotting is clever, and the clues are all there fairly laid out for the reader to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent mystery; watch the English words/French........2003-12-25

This is a most excellent mystery, written by one of Britain's premiere writers. Beginning with a murder (naturally) and a missing person, Campion and his companion (with the barely pronounceable first name) Lugg, set to uncover what happened. Some of the old "English/British" expressions might send one to the closest OED (Oxford English Dictionary, of course) and a line of "French", literally, at the end of the last chapter might require a "French" dictionary (for those who, like me, did not take the language in school). Otherwise, a fine book. I wish they would put the video (PBS) version of this book out, as it (the title character, Campion) was well played by Peter Davison of Dr. Who fame.

                                5 out of 5 stars Disappearing Inc........2001-04-14

With "Flowers for the Judge" Margery Allingham signals the change in her writing style which was first hinted at in "Police at the Funeral." Campion has matured a bit and changed from a hapless zany to someone just a bit more like a friend of the family. Still occasionally fatuous, but, more often, showing flashes of brilliance. In keeping with this, the stories themselves are shifting away from adventure tales and becoming more typical of detective stories. While Allingham is rarely very good at keeping secrets, there really are mysteries and inexplicable clues to puzzle out.

The mystery in "Flowers for the Judge," is who murdered Paul Brande in the cellar lock room of Barnabas Limited. Brande is one of the owners of this respectable publishing firm, along with his cousins John Widdowson and Michael Wedgewood. Paul, noted for running off without notice, and being a bit hare-brained to boot, leaves behind his wife Gina. He had proven himself somewhat lacking as a husband and Gina was in the process of trying to divorce him. To make this even more suspicious, her relationship with Michael, while not exactly improper, is a bit too close to be considered a simple friendship.

When the police discover that the murder weapon was Michael's car, which was used to pump carbon monoxide into the lock room, suspicions blossom. With Michael unable to produce an alibi, the result of the inquest is a forgone conclusion, and Michael is remanded over for trial. Gina and Ritchie Barnabas (another cousin) turn to Campion for help.

The case is complicated by other events and hints of scandal, yet provides Campion with only fragmentary evidence with which to track down the truth. Driven by the need to exonerate Michael rather than simple get him released, Campion's task seems impossible. He leaves no stone unturned in his efforts, and, in the end, risks his own life to reveal the true murderer.

I rather like the new Campion. And the change in writing style introduces considerable depth and emotional content than was present in the more light hearted romances of the past. Characters are more developed and accessible, as well. Not only is "Flowers for the Judge" a great story in it's own right, it is also a portent of more wonderful tales to come.

5 out of 5 stars classic golden age English detective story.......2000-07-14

Albert Campion, universal uncle and amateur detective, is invited into the family circle of staid British publisher Barnaby. There he finds an enmeshed family system, and a series of mysteries. Twenty years before one of the brothers vanished into thin air, while walking down a London street. Now Paul has been found dead in the manuscript vault. His cousin Mike (who is fond of the widow) is prime suspect. It was his car, left running outside the vault room's ventilator, that caused Paul's death of carbon monoxide poisoning. Cousin Ritchie, the reclusive manuscript reader, offers his eccentric assistance. A wonderful surprise ending to all this, which will be welcomed by anyone who's worked in a stuffy publishing house, or endured an asphyxiating family firm.
