The Social Meanings of Money and Property: In Search of a Talisman
Kenneth O. Doyle Manufacturer: Sage Publications, Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0761902090 |
Book Description
“In ‘The Social Meanings of Money and Property’ Kenneth O. Doyle has produced an intriguing study that lays the groundwork for understanding the role played by money and property among individuals, groups and even nationalities. The toughminded/tender minded dichotomy presented in The Social Meanings of Money and Property can also be viewed as the Conservative/Liberal conflict. Conservatives demand self-reliance and Liberals crave nurture. The Social Meanings of Money and Property is first a psychological treatise, second it is a stimulant for complex thought.” —W.J. Rayment, Conservativebookstore.com “A most important study… in the grand style of a Joseph Schumpeter…. [It] will reward both the expert and the general reader.” —Matthew Lamb, Boston College “Kenneth O. Doyle’s book, The Social Meanings of Money and Property, is one of the most wide-ranging and scholarly books I have ever read. . . .The comprehensiveness of the scholarship Doyle amasses will undoubtedly stimulate scholars from a variety of disciplines to test out the implications of the model.” –Wilbert J. McKeachie, University of Michigan Why would a man with more money than he could ever spend risk career, family, and freedom for a modest increase in net worth? Why would a woman who never cared at all about investments perjure herself for a better divorce settlement? Why do people of some cultures seem inclined toward economic success? What are the fundamental differences between conservatives and liberals, or capitalists and socialists? Is there any hope of rapprochement between Economic Man and Psychological Man? In this book, Professor Kenneth O. Doyle spells out a theoretical system for understanding these practical, everyday problems, using a conceptual framework for studying the social meanings of money and property. He finds fundamental meaning in the concept of talisman. We use money and property, he proposes, to protect ourselves from fears characteristic of our personalities: the fear of incompetence, the fear of abandonment, the fear of disarray, and the fear of constraint. The Social Meanings of Money and Property will be of interest to scholars and students across a number of disciplines, including, but by no means limited to, psychology, sociology, and economics.Customer Reviews:

Public Policy and the Internet: Privacy, Taxes, and Contract (Hoover Institution Press Publication, 481.)
Manufacturer: Hoover Institution Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0817998926 |
Book Description
As we enter the twenty-first century, every opinion, interest, and lifestyle known to man seems to have found a home somewhere on the Internet. The new technology and the new form of commerce it has generated have opened up much debate about how to deal with traditional business issues: in particular, privacy, taxation, and contracts. In October 1999 a group of prominent executives, Hoover fellows, and academics met to discuss Internet public policy, focusing initially on privacy and taxation but then expanding the debate to include issues of contract and jurisdiction as well. Public Policy and the Internet presents the initial findings that framed those discussions and outlines proposals that should guide policymaking in the future. In "Privacy and Electronic Commerce," Mary J. Cronin surveys opinion and position papers on how to deal with online privacy, the meaning of privacy in electronic commerce, and the arguments between advocates of self-regulation and legislation. Charles E. McLure Jr. looks at fundamental questions of tax policy and the Internet in his contribution, "The Taxation of Electronic Commerce: Background and Proposal," and outlines his proposal for a single, uniform nationwide base for sales and use taxes. Margaret Jane Radin's "Retooling Contract for the Digital Era" evaluates the crisis for contract brought on by the advent of electronic commerce. Taken together, the viewpoints presented in Public Policy and the Internet reinforce the judgment that the future of e-commerce will have as much to do with how policy issues are resolved as with how any technological challenge is overcome.

Fault-related Rocks
Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0691012202 |
Book Description
This is a richly illustrated reference book that provides a unique, comprehensive, and up-to-date survey of the rocks and structures of fault and shear zones. These zones are fundamental geologic structures in the Earth's crust. Their rigorous analysis is crucial to understanding the kinematics and dynamics of the continental and oceanic crust, the nature of earthquakes, and the formation of gold and hydrocarbon deposits. To document the variety of fault-related rocks, the book presents more than six hundred photographs of structures ranging in scale from outcrop to submicroscopic. These are accompanied by detailed explanations, often including geologic maps and cross sections, contributed by over 125 geoscientists from around the world.
The book opens with an extensive introduction by Arthur W. Snoke and Jan Tullis that is itself a major contribution to the field. Fault-related rocks and their origins have long been controversial and subject to inconsistent terminology. Snoke and Tullis address these problems by presenting the currently accepted ideas in the field, focusing on deformation mechanisms and conceptual models for fault and shear zones. They define common terminology and classifications and present a list of important questions for future research. In the main, photographic part of the book, the editors divide the contributions into three broad categories, covering brittle behavior, semi-brittle behavior, and ductile behavior. Under these headings, there are contributions on dozens of subtopics with photographs from localities around the world, including several "type" areas.
The book is an unrivaled source of information about fault-related rocks and will be important reading for a broad range of earth scientists, including structural geologists, petrologists, geophysicists, and environmental specialists.

Thermodynamics in Materials Science, Second Edition
Robert DeHoff Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0849340659 |
Book Description
Thermodynamics in Materials Science, Second Edition is a clear presentation of how thermodynamic data is used to predict the behavior of a wide range of materials, a crucial component in the decision-making process for many materials science and engineering applications. This primary textbook and ongoing reference accentuates the integration of principles, strategies, and thermochemical data to generate accurate "maps" of equilibrium states, such as phase diagrams, predominance diagrams, and Pourbaix corrosion diagrams. It also recommends which maps are best suited for specific real-world scenarios and thermodynamic problems. The second edition introduces new, more user-friendly computer software, capable of converting the latest databases into the most accurate equilibrium maps yet. Each chapter presents its subject matter consistently, based on the classification of thermodynamic systems, properties, and derivations that illustrate important relationships among variables for finding the conditions for equilibrium. Each chapter also contains a summary of important concepts and relationships as well as examples and sample problems that apply appropriate strategies for solving real-world problems. The up-to-date and complete coverage of thermodynamic data, laws, definitions, strategies, and tools in Thermodynamics in Materials Science, Second Edition provides students and practicing engineers a valuable guide for producing and applying maps of equilibrium states to everyday applications in materials sciences.

Only textbook I've read completely twice.......2004-03-26
Now that Dr. DeHoff is retired, I hope that he writes an additional version of this book. He should fix some errors in the problem sets, and perhaps extend a few topics. More solution models, and a more detailed treatment of other thermodynamic plots. A discussion of the measurement of thermodynamic data would also very useful.
DeHoff and Lupis make a great combination for materials thermodynamics, along with a kinetics text like Schmalzreid.

Grain Boundary Migration in Metals: Thermodynamics, Kinetics, and Applications,Second Edition
G. Gottstein , and Lasar S. Shvindlerman Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 142005435X |
Book Description
The behavior of adjacent materials at the boundary where they meet is an essential aspect of creating new engineering materials. Grain Boundary Migration in Metals is an authoritative account of the physics of grain boundary motion, written by two highly respected researchers. They provide a comprehensive overview of current knowledge regarding the migration process and how it affects microstructure evolution, focusing their treatment exclusively on the properties and behavior of grain boundaries with well defined geometry and crystallography. With their emphasis on applications-such as the characterization of microstructure and texture, recrystallization, and grain growth-the authors effectively fill the gap between the physics of grain boundary motion and its engineering practicality. The need for better microstructural design motivates permanent thrust for research in the field, and continued rapid progress appears inevitable. Grain Boundary Migration in Metals provides a solid foundation in the phenomena and serves as a valuable reference for professionals in materials science, solid state physics, and any industry engaged in metals production and the heat treatment of metals and alloys.

The mystery in "Flowers for the Judge," is who murdered Paul Brande in the cellar lock room of Barnabas Limited. Brande is one of the owners of this respectable publishing firm, along with his cousins John Widdowson and Michael Wedgewood. Paul, noted for running off without notice, and being a bit hare-brained to boot, leaves behind his wife Gina. He had proven himself somewhat lacking as a husband and Gina was in the process of trying to divorce him. To make this even more suspicious, her relationship with Michael, while not exactly improper, is a bit too close to be considered a simple friendship.
When the police discover that the murder weapon was Michael's car, which was used to pump carbon monoxide into the lock room, suspicions blossom. With Michael unable to produce an alibi, the result of the inquest is a forgone conclusion, and Michael is remanded over for trial. Gina and Ritchie Barnabas (another cousin) turn to Campion for help.
The case is complicated by other events and hints of scandal, yet provides Campion with only fragmentary evidence with which to track down the truth. Driven by the need to exonerate Michael rather than simple get him released, Campion's task seems impossible. He leaves no stone unturned in his efforts, and, in the end, risks his own life to reveal the true murderer.
I rather like the new Campion. And the change in writing style introduces considerable depth and emotional content than was present in the more light hearted romances of the past. Characters are more developed and accessible, as well. Not only is "Flowers for the Judge" a great story in it's own right, it is also a portent of more wonderful tales to come.
