      Book Description

The increasingly integrated economies of East Asia--China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand--face the dilemma of how to achieve exchange-rate security in the absence of a unifying "Asian euro." The US dollar has become the region's dominant intraregional trading currency as well as the monetary anchor to which East Asian economies informally peg their currencies. In this timely and original analysis of the benefits and risks of an East Asian dollar standard, Ronald McKinnon takes issue with the conventional view that urges flexible exchange rates on financially fragile economies. He argues instead that East Asian countries should coordinate their policies to keep their exchange rates stable against the dollar.

McKinnon develops a conceptual framework to show where the conventional wisdom on exchange rates has gone wrong. Pressure on the "virtuous" high-saving dollar-creditor East Asian nations to appreciate their currencies leads to a "conflicted" choice between a possible deflationary slump if they do appreciate and threatened trade sanctions if they do not. Analyzing interactions among the East Asian economies, McKinnon explains the rationale, and the need, for greater exchange-rate security in the region, pointing to the soft-dollar pegs adopted by these nations as steps in the right direction. He suggests that the dollar standard in East Asia could be rationalized through collective action by national governments and considers the effect of American monetary and trade policies on the East Asian economy.

If you're fan of Ronald Mckinnon, you probably have most of articles already. Only one last chapter was written for this book. Others were published in journals so you can find them in your school libraries. But if you don't have time or other accesses to articles, this is a good collection.

          Book Description

In 1991, the people of Ireland elected Mary Robinson, a women's rights crusader who supported legalized birth control and divorce, as their president. The country seemed poised for massive social and legal change, but it became apparent that even though Ireland at the dawn of the 21st century would be very different from the Ireland of the past, many fundamentals would remain the same.

This book examines Irish abortion and divorce law in their historical, religious, and cultural contexts. Its main focus is on the well-publicized referenda and court cases of the 1980s and 1990s, with special attention given to their roots and potential long-term effects on the communitarian Irish culture and opportunities for Irish women. The author identifies and discusses three forces that have affected Irish law and mores, especially those relating to abortion and divorce: economic insecurity; a sense of group loyalty and identification, particularly within families and churches; and Catholic teaching about the common good.

1 out of 5 stars What can you expect when "activists" review scholarship?.......2006-01-12

When the best self-proclaimed "pro-choice activist" Ivana Bacik could do was to make the petty comment that Professor Smyth's book was flawed for calling the Irish Times "liberal" (by Northern Irish standards -- where Professor Smyth is from -- she may be right) or that the philosophically broad forum that is the Irish Times that would embarrass many American editorial pages for its sophistication and broadmindedness, I knew I was reading a review by someone who had not taken the time to understand the arguments made in the book. Therefore: the resort to rhetorical tricks that don't actually mean anything. I familiar with Professor Smyth's work and while I am confident that she and I would not agree on all policy matters, I am equally confident we would find each other's scholarly work useful in our own. Especially in those most trying of subjects, such as abortion, there is something called collegiality among scholars that is worth striving for.

Test the review yourself. Can you tell from Professor Bacik's descriptions of either book what the primary arguments are? Do we think she knows what they are?

From reading Professor Bacik's review of my own book, I am confident she does not understand the arguments raised nor do her, at least honestly, self-proclaimed ideological blinders, make it possible for her to admit someone whose political views different from her might have other valuable points to raise. For example, my book does not rule out legalized abortion, and I make the statement Professor Bacik favorably attributes to it, because it is true. From the point of view of someone with considerable practical experience in the American family law (I suspect Professor Bacik's is limited, at best) I cannot help but to compare many aspects unfavorably to Ireland's. As for Professor Bacik's choices to make fun of my giving quite proper credit to some of the finest legal minds Ireland has ever produced -- only a very blinded pro-choice activist would not admit to their intellectual worth -- I am embarrassed for her. Moreover, she fails to mention the many scholars who are her current colleagues that I cite and on whom I rely more heavily who might agree with her as a matter of policy but are intellectually honest enough to see the flaws blind activism creates when it overcomes scholarship. Finally, if she is truly unaware that the Irish constitution is based on and includes almost word for word concepts that would be adopted in numerous human rights documents, Vatican II works on the Catholic role in politics years later (!), I confess myself astonished!

I understand that Professor Bacik holds a position in the Trinity College Dublin law faculty, but "positions" are not the only hallmark of merit. Her primary interest appears to be running for the European Parliament (which does little but pay its members) and be a self-proclaimed "pro-choice activist." My own view: politics is nice. Truth is what matters. Please let Professor Smyth and I get on with our work seeking out truth and get out of the way.

                Book Description

All coastal areas are facing a growing range of stresses and shocks, the scale of which now poses threats to the resilience of both human and environmental coastal systems. Responsible agencies are seeking better ways of managing the causes and consequences of the environmental change process in coastal zones. This volume discusses the basic principles underpinning a more integrated approach to coastal management and highlights the obstacles that may be met in practice in both developed and developing countries. Successful strategies will have to encompass all the elements of management, from planning and design through financing and implementation, as highlighted in this book. This book includes a CD-ROM with computer visualisation of field data and water quality modelling. There are also movie clips of spectacular scenes.

                    Book Description

This book presents a state-of-the-art scientific overview of the influence of terrestrial vegetation and soils within the Earth system. It deals especially with interactions between the terrestrial biosphere and the atmosphere via the hydrological cycle and their interlinkage with anthropogenic activities. Measurements gathered in integrated field experiments in the Sahel, the Amazon, North America and South-east Asia confirm the importance of these interactions, but a substantial data consolidation effort still needs to be undertaken. Observations are complemented by modelling studies, including regional models that simulate flows and transport in river catchments, coupled land-cover and regional climate systems, and Earth-system and global circulation models. Water, nutrient and sediment fluxes in river basins are also discussed and are shown to be highly impacted and regulated by humans through land use, pollution and river engineering. Finally, the book discusses environmental vulnerability and methodologies for assessing the risks associated with regional and global climatic and environmental variability and change. The editors emphasise that the results reported in this book are based on the research work of many individual scientists and teams around the world associated with the objectives of the IGBP-BAHC and WCRP-GEWEX international research programmes.

                      Book Description

Global climate change - rapid, substantial and human induced - may have radical consequences for life on earth. The problem is a complex one, however, demanding a multi-disciplinary approach. A simple cost-benefit analysis cannot capture the essentials, nor can the issue be reduced to an emissions reduction game, as the Kyoto process tries to do. It is much more sensible to adopt an integrative approach, which reveals that global climate change needs to be considered as a spider in a web, a triggering factor for a range of other, related problems - land use changes, water supply and demand, food supply, energy supply, human health, air pollution, etc. But an approach like this, which takes account of all items of knowledge, known and uncertain, does not produce clear-cut, final and popular answers. It does provide useful insights, however, which will allow comprehensive and effective long-term climate strategies to be put into effect.
Climate Change: An Integrated Perspective will appeal to a broad spectrum of readers. It is a useful source for the climate-change professionals, such as policy makers and analysts, natural and social scientists. It is also suitable for educationalists, students and indeed anyone interested in the fascinating world of multidisciplinary research underlying our approach to this global change issue.

                                    Book Description

The use of special functions, and in particular Airy functions, is rather common in physics. The reason may be found in the need, and even in the necessity, to express a physical phenomenon in terms of an effective and comprehensive analytical form for the whole scientific community. However, for the past twenty years, many physical problems have been resolved by computers. This trend is now becoming the norm as the importance of computers continues to grow. As a last resort, the special functions employed in physics will have to be calculated numerically, even if the analytic formulation of physics is of primary importance.

Airy functions have periodically been the subject of many review articles, but no noteworthy compilation on this subject has been published since the 1950s. In this work, we provide an exhaustive compilation of the current knowledge on the analytical properties of Airy functions, developing with care the calculus implying the Airy functions.

The book is divided into 2 parts: the first is devoted to the mathematical properties of Airy functions, whilst the second presents some applications of Airy functions to various fields of physics. The examples provided succinctly illustrate the use of Airy functions in classical and quantum physics.
