Speculative Capital and Derivatives, Vol. 2: The Nature of Risk in Capital Markets
ASIN: 0273641557 |
Book Description
The first book to make sense of the invisible hand of global finance
Customer Reviews:
from flawed premises follow flawed conclusions.......2006-09-23
This is, at bottom, an attempt to work out a Marxist interpretation of Black-Scholes. Black-Scholes gets the numbers right, and so can't be written off as 'wrong' in any predictive sense.
Yet it certainly wasn't the work of Marxists or anyone working from their premises, so for some one who is, the work must have been wrong in some sense.
This is the situation Nasser Saber seeks to address. He does so with some ingenuity, but those of us who don't share the premises need not follow the windings of their application.
Here's a very short course, though. He doesn't believe in "time preference," i.e. the idea that even aside from the interest of risk we prefer a dollar today to a dollar tomorrow, and have to be bribed to wait a day for our dollar. That bribe is known to mainstream economics as the risk-free interest rate, and it is crucial to the reasoning that led to Black-Scholes.
Mr. Saber, though, treats interest rates as the arbitrary edict of banks, under the direction of a central bank. He claims that the mainstream theory would require is to believe that when "in 1998 and then again in early 1999, the Bank of Japan pushed the interest rates to zero, it did so because 120 million Japanese had lost their time preference."
That's wrong, though, What such economists might say, rather, is that the Japanese continued to have a time preference, so there continued to be a risk-free interest rate, expressible in positive numbers, but that the Bank lent money at below this rate, at zero, in hopes of jump-starting a stalled economy. Gravity didn't disappear--the bank simply sought to create a hot air balloon to negate, if only briefly, its effects on certain masses.
Suddenly it all makes sense!.......2003-07-30
Thoroughly readable, this book explains with simple examples what speculative capital is and the effects it has wrought on financial, legal and social institutions around the world.
Although this book is accessible to people like me who have never studied economics or finance, Saber's theoretical foundation is deep and persuasive. He demolishes many theories of modern finance by showing their impossible contradictions, and replaces them with an elegant theory which explains so much of what is happening: the significance of Bretton Woods, the new role of the IMF, the cause of the Asian currency crisis, LTCM, and the dot-bomb, and the massive credit bubble that continues to build.
Until I read this book, I never really understood what globalization actually is, or why many governments are so fixated on fighting inflation (rather than other issues like unemployment), or why the Fed is keeping interest rates so low.
The world makes a lot more sense now.
A word of warning: Saber comes across as an iconoclast, delighting in destroying dearly-held (but ultimately flawed) theories of modern finance. If you spent years acquiring a knowledge of modern finance, you may be dismayed to learn how much your professors led you astray.
A very pleasent work.......2001-07-27
Nasser Saber does well to explain the fine details of speculative forces. Chapter four, on Arbitrage and the South Eastern monetary crisis is especially well written.

Book Description
Autonomy, viewed as a subject's autonomous designing of her own distinctive 'individuality', is not a constitutive problem for liberal theory. Since its earliest formulations, liberalism has taken it for granted that protecting rights is a sufficient guarantee for the primacy of individual subjectivity. The most dangerous legacy of the 'hierarchical-dualist' representation of the subject is the primacy given to reason in defining an individual's identity. For Santoro freedom is not a fixed measure. It is not the container of powers and rights defining an individual's role and identity. It is rather the outcome of a process whereby individuals continuously re-define the shape of their individuality. Freedom is everything that each of us manages to be in his or her active and uncertain opposition to external 'pressures'.

Customer Reviews:
Not for the small-scale, backyard compost operation.......2006-08-22
If all you plan to do is improve your garden using kitchen scraps and some yard waste, this book is not for you. It is very technical, and best-suited to those with lots of space and time on their hands to manage large composting projects. Don't let this be your first book on the subject, since it will probably (wrongly) convince you that you need a Masters in Agriculture or Ecology to do accomplish what will naturally happen if you get any of a number of inexpensive composting bins, toss in some banana peels, coffee grinds and dead leaves, mix in some dirt and let the microbes get to work.
It really is the Bible of composting.......2006-06-11
This is the most thumbed-through book on composting I have. Easily 90% of anything you would want to know about composting is inside this book. A small amount of the material may not be useful to the typical gardener, but it is interesting none the less. An excellent guide for the beginner and a good reference for the advanced composter.
Awesome book for any serious gardener.......2005-09-23
As a serious gardener I appreciate well written books that I can own and have in my book shelf for yearly reading. And Rodale is a well respected publisher of gardening books. The subtitle says it all 'Easy methods for every gardener'.
This means even apartment dwellers with a porch or patio can have a small compost setup. The book covers numerous ways to construct a composter as well as the many types of organic or natural materials one can compost. Even cardboard in moderation, as well as the traditional eggshells, coffee grounds, banana peels, vegetable and fruit scraps.
The book also discusses year round composting and how and why composting works and the positive environmental impact of everyone have some type of a compost set up. This is one of those books every serious gardener should have or at least buy, read and donate to ones public library.
The Rodale Book of Composting:Easy Methods for Every Gardener.......2005-07-28
What a great book! Easy to read, lots of information and even gives you idea's on building your compost bins. If you are a gardener and are planning on composting you really should buy this book.
If you buy no other compost book..........2004-09-17
This is the one you want. Everything you need to know about compost is available to you here, from the small household garden to municipal waste disposal programs.
Most of the book deals with the biochemistry of compost, teaching you how to maintain and balance your fertilizer.

How to Create "Black Gold" Out of Waste.......2004-06-22
Late last fall, I bought a composting bin from my county, determined to stop wasting all those perfectly good, brown leaves laying all over my backyard. Along with the bin, I received a colorful, short (30-page) book, called "Home Composting Made Easy." Unfortunately, I didn't read the book right away, and the next thing you know, the winter had set in. For several months, as the temperature dropped into the teens or even single digits, I gave the compost bin -- or the book -- little thought...
Early the next spring, I looked inside my compost bin and, big surprise, not a lot of composting had gone on during those frigid December, January, and February months. It was right then that I realized, "hey, I have no idea what the heck I'm doing here!"
Luckily, I still had that colorful, little book on composting, and pretty soon I had the answers to all my questions: the pile needed water (duh!) and turning (double duh!) in order to aerate it. And really, that's all it took, regular turning and moistening, and now I've got a bin full of rich compost, "black gold" as the book calls it. Boy, is my garden going to be happy when I spread it around! Anyway, the moral of this story is that composting is rewarding, environmentally beneficial, and not difficult at all - assuming, of course, that you've got "Home Composting Made Easy" and that you actually read it!

Book Description
The 34th European Marine Biology Symposium was held in Ponta Delgada, The Azores, between 13th and 17th September 1999. It was organised by the University of the Azores in association with the Municipal Museum of Funchal (Madeira), and the Plymouth Environment Research Centre (University of Plymouth, UK).
The selected topics, dictated by the position of the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean, were: `Ecology and Evolution on Island Shores', `The Open Ocean', and `The Deep Ocean'. Each topic was introduced by a recognised expert of international reputation and these keynote reviews provide authoritative summaries of the current status of these very important topics in marine biology. The 35 papers which make up this volume bring new ideas and concepts relating to the functioning of marine systems extending from the intertidal, through the pelagic realm down to the deep sea. The book covers many aspects of the biology of marine organisms and will have wide interest to all those interested in the life of the world's oceans.

ASIN: 0534379532 |
Book Description
The perfect manual for the lab when studying Earth Science or Physical Geology! The experiments featured in this lab manual teach and reinforce the core skills that characterize the Earth Sciences and illustrate how the scientific method works. Full of engaging activities that are designed to help readers develop data-gathering skills, such as mineral and rock identification, and data-analysis skills, the manual uses clear and easy-to-understand graphs and simple calculations. The authors also introduce readers to the graphical analysis of data via maps and sections that are characteristic of the earth sciences, helping readers develop the skills they need to "read" topographic, geologic, and meteorological maps. Using this manual in conjunction with the interactive experience of a lab, readers learn to understand aerial and satellite images, and perceive the importance of stratigraphic columns, geologic sections, and seismic waves.

Book Description
A brilliant account of the dramatic confrontation between the two “mighty opposites” of the Victorian age.
It was the most important duel in Victorian politics. From the mid-19th Century, parliamentary and political life in Britain would be dominated by their head-to-head confrontation. Each would seize the initiative at different times; blows would be traded and points scored. One would seemingly have an unassailable advantage only to see it retrieved by his foe. Even death failed to end the struggle; Disraeli’s political ghost continued to torment Gladstone, not least during the shocking Home Rule debates of 1886.
The Lion and the Unicorn is the story of this great rivalry; the challenge is how to tell it in a compelling way for a 21st Century audience. Part of the problem is that while one man appears to be the epitome of his times, the other is apparently the quintessence of ours. William Gladstone is often used to exemplify every undesirable feature of the Victorian age, most notably hypocrisy, self-righteousness and cant.
In a great feud that electrified the Victorian age, Gladstone and Disraeli set out their political and moral stalls in vivid opposition to each other, where, in addition, their abiding personal loathing personalized their disputes. The conflict between these two political giants would help to establish the modern parliamentary system.
Customer Reviews:
"The Lion and the Unicorn were fighting for the crown.......2007-10-04
The Lion beat the Unicorn all round the town.
Some gave them white bread, some gave them brown:
Some gave them plum-cake and drummed them out of town."
The original illustrations of the Lion and the Unicorn in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass, created by noted illustrator Sir John Tenniel, bear a startling resemblance to Tenniel's illustrations of Benjamin Disraeli (the Unicorn) and William Gladstone (the Lion) published in Punch. The resemblance is no coincidence according to historian Richard Aldous and the image of the Lion and Unicorn fighting all around the town provides Aldous with a perfect title for his biography of the decades-long political rivalry between two giants of 19th-century British politics. "The Lion and the Unicorn" is an entertaining and very informative look at a political rivalry that changed the face of British politics and presaged the type of personalized electioneering that is found in both the United States and Britain today.
Aldous doesn't set out to give a straight-line biography of both Gladstone and Disraeli. He notes that there is plenty of material on their individual lives and that, rather, he has set out to take a comprehensive look at their bitter relationship, a relationship that produced titanic clashes for over 40 years. The result is an almost breathless recitation of a roller coast ride in which a political rivalry turned decidedly personal is played out in Parliament and across Britain. Gladstone, who first entered Parliament in 1832, and Disraeli (arriving in 1837) were both Tories at the start of their career and (ostensibly) political allies. However, Gladstone soon left for the Liberals while Disraeli remained with the Tories. In the process Disraeli remade the Tories into the modern Conservative Party while Gladstone took a loose coalition of diverse groups including Whigs and free-trade Conservatives (Peelites) and turned it into something approaching a modern Liberal Party. Each chapter provides a snapshot on their 44-year rivalry over a wide range of domestic and foreign policy issues. High points of the book include the general election of 1868, won by Gladstone, Disraeli's subsequent rout of Gladstone in the 1874 elections, and Gladstone's "Midlothian Campaign in 1880 which marked the rivals' last battle before Disraeli's death in 1881. Aldous correctly describes the 1874 campaign as perhaps the first one waged solely as a public battle between two rivals rather than one on specific issues. As such, when one looks at political campaigns today that seem based on popularity contests one can see where this sort of process had its birth.
Aldous does a great job comparing the very different personalities of the two rivals. For example, Disraeli, despite being thought of as a fop and dandy had, once he got married, a loving and very loving relationship with his wife Mary Anne, an older woman to whom he was singularly devoted. Gladstone on the other hand, and despite his deep Anglican church beliefs had what can only be described as an addiction to `women of the night', a practice that was known but rarely discussed at the time. Aldous paints a remarkably full, even-handed portrait of the public and private lives of both men.
One caveat: Aldous does not flesh out many of the national issues of the day around which this great rivalry played itself out. Rather, the reader is presumed to know or have a general knowledge of those issues; the great debates on the repeal of the Corn Laws, free-trade, "the Irish question", and the great reform battles of the 19th-century that eventually extended the right of suffrage from a few landowners to almost the entire adult (male) population of the United Kingdom. This is far from a fatal flaw, and I'm not even sure it should be considered a flaw since Aldous' focus is primarily on the ups and downs of their battles rather than an examination of the intricacies of the political issues of the day. In fact, sidebars into these issues probably would have bogged down the story Aldous set out to tell. However, the reader probably should know in advance that there may be times where he/she may feel an urge to look elsewhere for background information on some of these issues. I did that more than once even though it really isn't necessary in order to gain a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction in enjoying Aldous' account of the rivalry of these two men.
Highly recommended. L. Fleisig

Book Description
The Dance of the Lion and the Unicorn is a riveting read and a revolutionary approach to helping couples whose relationship is in trouble. It focuses on the most common dynamic of relationships that fail: One partner (lion) reacts with outbursts of anger, while the other (unicorn) tries to avoid conflict in ways that only make things worse.
Seasoned marriage and family therapist Dr. Mark Waller shows how to escape the downward spiral of this widespread dynamic. He takes us into the gripping drama of actual counseling sessions to show, rather than just tell about, how his clients recover their self-respect, see themselves and their partners in ways they never could before, and save their marriages.

The Dance of the Lion and the Unicorn.......2005-03-09
To anyone in a relationship:
Dr Mark Waller takes us through the minefield of understanding the temperament we are born with and how that temperament is impacted by early childhood development affecting our relationships throughout our lives.
Using the analogy of the Lion and the Unicorn to help understand the difference between temperaments, Dr. Waller focuses on the most common reason relationships fail. One partner - the Lion - reacts with outbursts of anger, while the other partner - the Unicorn - tries to avoid conflict in ways that only make matters worse. Resulting in what becomes the "Dance of the Lion and the Unicorn."
Waller describes how we react to emotional triggers by either approaching (Lion) or withdrawing (Unicorn). It works something like this... We all carry pain, for example, in a relationship one person's pain is rejection (Lion) and the other person's pain is fear (Unicorn). Both players become defensive and react with their preferred survival strategy - anger (Lion) and avoidance (Unicorn). So when the Unicorn avoids the Lion the Lion feels rejected and becomes angry which causes fear in the Unicorn who seeks safety by avoidance, and round and round it goes until something breaks.
Dr. Waller shows us how to escape the toxic driving force of the dance. He takes us into the drama of actual counseling sessions with a couple named Pat and Angie to show us how they recover their self-respect, see themselves and their partner in ways they never could before, and in the process ending the dance and saving their marriage.
A great read for anyone who wants to learn more about how relationships really work. This book can dramatically make a difference in your relations with others.

The Dance of the Lion and the Unicorn.......2005-02-17
To all potential readers of the book:
Dr. Waller's latest book is truly remarkable. I recognized myself about a paragraph into the introduction. Needless to say, I had to read on! Being a lion, I was always surprised when people found my blustery demeanor intimidating. Hmmmm...maybe I need to change of few thing? I also wondered why I cry so easily (like over chocolate chip cookie commercials) and why my feelings were so easily hurt. It didn't take long to see the origin of some of my character traits and now that I am aware, I can control and work with some of them to be a more effective person, and partner. I also have a greater understanding of my husband and can now difuse a situation before it really gets out of hand. But the best part is I can see where my actions have influenced (and harmed) my daughters, and I have an opportunity to correct some of the damage before their whole lives are trashed. I have bought a copy of this book for every person I know who could use a little relationship help. If you are serious about improving your life with or without a mate, read this book. It can really make a positive difference in your interactions with others.
Thank you, Dr. Waller, for your amazing and insightful book.
Sincerely,

Real Life Relationship Dynamics.......2005-01-14
Dear Mr. Waller,
I feel that your book perfectly illustrates an extremely common relationship dynamic. Most readers will be able to identify themselves in the role of the "lion" or the "unicorn". This information will help people change self-defeating behaviors. They will be able to move past seeing their partner as "wrong" and gain understanding and fresh perceptions. The book provides tools for healing and personal development.
As a lion in my relationships, I was overwhelmed by guilt after my angry outbursts. Your book brought light to this shadow side and helped me to release the self-blame I have carried throughout my life. This dance involves two players and each person must honestly assess their contribution to dysfunction. Your book was a perfect blend of real-life anecdotes and scientific study.
I highly recommend this book to anyone dedicated to growth and creating peace-filled relationships. I believe that unless we work through our current problems, the same issues will reoccur later in our lives. You can run, but you can't hide...so you might as well dance.
Warmest regards,
Amy Garcia

Book Description
Not until her twenties was the real Edith Sitwell born. Freed from her unhappy home life she set up home in a shabby London flat: she became - almost overnight - one of the best-known 1920s pioneering poets. Her Plantagenet good looks attracted the photographer Cecil Beaton and the principal painters of the day. She befriended Aldous Huxley, T.S. Eliot, and Gertrude Stein. She rebuffed Wyndham Lewis and ardently loved the temperamental Russian painter, Pavel Tchelitchew. The thirties she spent in penury, writing her novels, poems and biographies and it was only when Yeats hailed her as `a major poet' that her work reached a wider audience and she set off to conquer New York and Hollywood. In this vivid and sympathetic portrayal, drawing on Edith's brilliantly funny and often outrageous letters, Victoria Glendinning shows the spontaneous, gallant, yet tragically insecure woman behind the public image.
