Book Description
The corporate world is a world dominated and controlled by men. Don Steele has prevailed in that world for 30 years. He tells women honestly and bluntly how that world really works and what they must do to succeed. His sound methods and real-world advice are mandatory for every young woman just starting out, all women stalled in their careers and any woman returning to the office.
Customer Reviews:
Good but needs updating with a word of WARNING........2006-06-13
I purchased Officepolitics after reading Don's other books HOW TO DATE YOUNG WOMEN version one and two(advanced skills).
I originally purchased HTDYW v1 after working in an office with 95% young women and it blew me away about their thinking, attitude etc so I researched some online bookstores and purchased a number of books mainly on understanding young chicks and HTDYW v1 was one of them after reading all these books I realised how brutally true HTDYW was, and how much rubbish the other three books were. OFFICEPOLITICS was written for women but both sexes can benefit from reading about life in the corporation and how to deal with bosses, co-workers, personnel staff for both new entrants into the work force and those considering changing jobs or career paths. The book is brutally honest as were Don's other books, for those that have exerienced some of the circumstances that is covered you will relate and find very amusing.
The book was written in 1994 so it needs updating but overall it is still relevent to todays workforce.

The Bible.......2005-10-19
When I started working at my first company at the age of 22 I was shocked. People were so mean to me, as a 22 year old educated woman. All my experiences before had taught me that I was going to be all that I could be, and instead I had people tell me just the opposite. They told me to get ready for failure and disappointment. I met failure and disappointment for the first time at that company, most of which came from management apathy and coworker bitterness. I continue to meet apathy and bitterness from many fascets in life, but this book helped me deal with it.
If you, as a young, newly minted college graduate (whether or not you're a man or a woman) believe that the workplace is a social outlet you've got another thing coming. Think back to kindergarden, not much has changed since then. Screaming, fighting and greed are going to follow you everywhere. You will be sitting there minding your own business then an armchair will go flying over your head. If you had any illusions about leading a yuppie-esque lifestyle, forget it. People come to work now because they are trying to get away from the white trash soap operas their home lives are. Management is too lazy, too concerned with their own jobs, and most importantly too afraid to discipline people for their bad behavior and just accept it. You have to find something else to do with your time if you want to get somewhere, you have no choice but to.
So, be nice, but not too nice. Don't share things with people except the basic information, that's all people really need or want to know about you anyway. Get hobbies and interests outside of work, and by all means make friends outside of work. And the jealousy is something you will never ever EVER escape, being that you work in an office full of women no doubt. Never speak of boyfriends, they will get super jealous because you're younger and thinner. If anyone asks, you don't have one and the subject is closed. We're all in this alone, people. Don't retreat into a cave, be someone's slave, be a doormat, and most importantly don't be unhappy.
Something that I wish I had done when I was younger was to have not have stayed at that bad company I did for four years. I was too afraid and too complacent to leave even though I would come home some days practically in tears because of the antics of my coworkers. And did managment do anything? No, they're afraid to. Instead they will yell at the well behaved people because they will follow their orders. Sound unfair? Well it is, but that's too bad. You don't like it? Get married, quit your stupid job and become a mommy. Want a more bohemian life? Go and live it, you'll be broke and starving and complaining about it no doubt.
The message is that life is too short (and it really is) to not be happy, and if you stay at one place for too long they will not just suck the life out of you but give you patronizing little pats on the head rather than real reward. Don't settle.
read this book and follow it!.......2005-06-30
I wish I had this book when I was starting out in my career. Would have saved me a lot of heartache. Great book, fun to read and honest to a fault. I highly recommend reading this book and taking it seriously. I'm making a lot more money today because of the advice.
Excellent "action guide" to corporate politics -for Men too!.......2005-01-11
If you're familiar with R. Don Steele you know his writing style. If not, prepare yourself for Don's refreshingly honest view of corporate politics, with a slant towards helping the young professional woman navigate and avoid the pitfalls of corporate politics.
That being said, this book is much more than just "office politics for women". About 95% of it is equally usable by men too--young, old, whatever. I have read many business [politics] books, and this one is definitely in the top 10. I have fought and continue to fight in the corporate trenches, and R. Don is "spot on" with his observations. It's a male-dominated working world and to pretend it's not is naieve and foolish.
If you're familiar with Robert Townsend's "Up the Organization", this book has a similar feel to it. It's honest but not uptight. R. Don adds humour in places, and just good old-fashioned common-sense.
Currently this book is out of print but if you can't find a used one it's WELL WORTH IT to add it to your bookshelf.
School of Hard Knocks in one volume.......2004-07-09
If you are trying to get your first job in the business world and you don't want to go through corporate culture shock (because what you've been taught has no relation to reality) then this book is a must read.
I never liked the idea of working for a corporation and consequently never worked for one. However, this book applied in a lot of ways to a job I had, mainly because of the author's insights into the male mindset.
A lot people would like to think that most men don't think like this - I would counter that SOME men don't, but most do. And don't believe for a minute that many, if any of your co-workers are your allies. Most of mine were so insecure and pathetic that they would have sold me (any anyone else) down the river for a promotion or a bigger salary. And I'm talking about people with college degrees, not high school dropouts.
I was not the least bit surprised at the Enron debacle - a lot of corporate mischief has been going on for quite some time - Robert Maxwell running off with billions in worker pensions and the Sunbeam CEO doing the same - most people who have average IQ's don't catch on until something on the scale of Enron does occur. And thank god it did - what a wake up call it was.
The main advice from this book is 1) Get in - 2) fight by choosing your battles wisely - 3) get your "F.U." money and
4) retire early, without becoming a slave to "General Cow". Good advice.

Book Description
This book is a guide to the development of an effective field sampling program as well as to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and technical information for many of the most effective remedial investigation methods. The book focuses on intrusive investigation techniques, but non-intrusive techniques such as aerial photography, surface geophysics, and surface radiological surveying are also addressed. SOPs have been provided for those sampling techniques that do not require specialized academic training, such as soil, sediment, surface water, groundwater, and drum sampling. For more specialized investigative techniques, such as underground drainage surveying and some types of soil-gas surveying, information is provided to help you understand how the technique works and under what conditions it can be used most effectively. The book also addresses: equipment decontamination; sample preparation, documentation, and shipment; health and safety; and management of investigation-derived waste. Emphasis is placed on those methods and procedures that have both proved themselves to be effective and are acknowledged by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as reputable techniques.

Book Description
An understanding of the characteristics and the ecology of soils, particularly those of forest ecosystems in the humid tropics, is central to the development of sustainable forest management systems. The present book examines the contribution that forest soil science and forest ecology can make to sustainable land use in the humid tropics. Four main issues are addressed: characteristics and classification of forest soils, chemical and hydrological changes after forest utilization, soil fertility management in forest plantations and agroforestry systems as well as ecosystem studies from the dipterocarp forest region of Southeast Asia. Additionally, case studies include work from Guyana, Costa Rica, the Philippines, Malaysia, Australia and Nigeria.

Book Description
Changing Pacific Forests examines the forest-related economy of the Pacific Basin—including Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, China, and the Philippines—from a historical perspective.
Drawing on a 1991 conference sponsored by the Forest History Society and the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations held in Honolulu, these papers address a range of topics related to the changing Pacific forests, including the remnants of colonialism, the emergence of the Third World, people and resources caught in the middle of policy decisions, land management, national forests, and subsistence use of the forest by indigenous peoples. Essays also explore macroeconomic theories of international trade and the interests of the United States and the former Soviet Union in the economic health of the region. Changing Pacific Forests will be of interest to scholars of the economy and environment of the Pacific Basin as well as of land management and the history of land use in general.

Book Description
The volume illustrates the State of the art and new directions in plasma physics, space physics, and astrophysics. It covers several hot topics of interdisciplinary interest where progress is made by the use of joint expertise. It summarizes an unusually lively symposium that has gathered world experts with a broad spectrum of research interests. Interdisciplinary meetings at the border between plasma physics and astrophysics are becoming increasingly important. In the recent past, several proceedings volumes have been devoted to astrophysical plasmas. This volume has the unique feature of being professional but not specialized, because it covers an unusually broad spectrum of topics under the common theme of the study of complex and collective phenomena in macroscopic systems, from the scale of laboratory plasma experiments to the scale of the universe. Included are: - basic plasma processes - space plasmas, planetary plasmas, and the heliosphere - solar and stellar plasmas - plasmas around compact objects - plasmas in galaxies - plasmas in clusters of galaxies - cosmological plasmas - testing plasma astrophysics in the laboratory
Book Description
The only one of its kind devoted entirely to the subject,
Large Eddy Simulation presents a comprehensive account and a unified view of this young but very rich discipline. LES is the only efficient technique for approaching high Reynolds numbers when simulating industrial, natural or experimental configurations. The author concentrates on incompressible fluids and chooses topics well to treat both the mathematical ideas and the applications with care. The book addresses researchers as well as graduate students and engineers. The second edition was a greatly enriched version motivated both by the increasing theoretical interest in LES and the increasing number of applications. Two entirely new chapters were devoted to the coupling of LES with multiresolution multidomain techniques and to the new hybrid approaches that relate the LES procedures to the classical statistical methods based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations.
This 3rd edition adds various sections to the text like a careful error analysis, on filtered density function models and multiscale models. It also contains two new chapters on the prediction of scalars using LES which are of considerable interest for engineering and geophysical modeling. The part on geophysical flow has much to offer on a critical current issue.
Customer Reviews:
Good Book!!.......2007-07-12
Great Job, this book is good, but is very tiring. Because the subject is extensive.
Thank you!!
An atlas of large-eddy simulation.......2006-06-02
This book presents the current status of Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) and is invaluable for anyone working on the field.
The author presents all relevant subgrid scale models, the theoretical basis of the method, lessons from practical cases, etc
It is no accident that this is the 3rd revision in 4 years, collecting forewords from leading theoreticians along the way: Germano, Lesieur and Meneveau.

Modern Spectroscopy
ASIN: 0471974218 |
Book Description
Encompassing a wide range of techniques, spectroscopy is used to analyze chemicals, biological and pharmaceutical compounds, food and beverages, and high-tech materials. Covering the whole range of spectroscopic techniques, this book provides a thorough overview of underlying principles, techniques and applications. Dr. Hollas is a well-known author and authority in the field, and this book is an expanded version of his well-received lower-level book, Modern Spectroscopy, now in its third edition (0-471-96523-5).
"The first edition of High Resolution Spectroscopy (the big book version of Modern Spectroscopy) was undoubtedly the best textbook on spectroscopy written at an undergraduate / beginning graduate level, and the second edition is an improvement...
...The coverage is broad, deep and even. The first chapters give a concise and clear introduction to spectroscopy, covering much that is accessible elsewhere only in more complicated discussions...
...The production values of High Resolution Spectroscopy are high, diagrams are well reproduced and the whole text is lavishly illustrated with many spectra and diagrams of apparatus....
... it contains a great deal of material and is beautifully written; every library should contain a copy; every student of spectroscopy (no-matter what age!) should have a copy on their shelves."

Book Description
Elisabetta Caminer Turra (1751-96) was one of the most prominent women in eighteenth-century Italy and a central figure in the international "Republic of Letters." A journalist and publisher, Caminer participated in important debates on capital punishment, freedom of the press, and the abuse of clerical power. She also helped spread Enlightenment ideas into Italy by promoting and publishing Voltaire's latest works and translating new European plays-plays she herself directed, to great applause, on Venetian stages.
Bringing together Caminer's letters, poems, and journalistic writings, nearly all published for the first time here, Selected Writings offers readers an intellectual biography of this remarkable figure as well as a glimpse into her intimate correspondence with the most prominent thinkers of her day. But more important, Selected Writings provides insight into the passion that animated Caminer's fervent reflections on the complex and shifting condition of women in her society-the same passion that pushed her to succeed in the male-dominated literary professions.
