For those of us who feel intimidated by the relentless pace of technological change, this book is a godsend. Not only does the author help make sense of how new technologies are altering the workplace, but she also provides practical advice on how to make the most of one's skills and interests in such an environment. Goldberg writes with clarity and grace. The tips at the end of each chapter offer excellent guidance for adapting to a high-tech world and inspire the reader to continue to think about these issues on his or her own. All in all, a valuable and accessible book that can help readers find their place in an increasingly complex world.

A Must Read for Those Advers to Technology.......1999-12-20

I found the book extremely useful. If there is anyone who has an aversion to technology, this is the book to read. As usual, Ms. Goldberg's style is fluid and cogent. It is an easy read and well done. Congratulations on a much needed book in today's hi-tech society.

This is proving a great tool for getting reluctant employees to face the fact that they simply have to deal with computers. It provides enough information and tips about working in this new way, without ever getting technical, to get people relaxed enough to accept training with hope instead of terror.

This book is ideal for getting my reluctant older university students to try using the Internet for research. It answers many of the difficult questions about how to learn what information to trust on the web, and in general makes the whole idea of a wired world less threatening. In fact, if I decide to get my mother a computer, this book might prove the key to convincing her to actually use it. Nice, easy reading, and never condescending.

Corporate groups outside the US are often controlled by a complex of ownership links, which typically form a pyramidal structure: a private holding company sits at the top of a control pyramid of several tiers of companies; firms in the lowest tier are the group's publicly listed companies. The usual practice of expropriation in such groups is to pass bad assets to companies down the pyramid and to pass the proceeds up the pyramid via internal transactions. For this collection Larry Lang has selected some of the most significant previously published articles by leading academics which investigate this process and its consequences. We examine a sample of connected transactions between Hong Kong listed companies and their controlling shareholders. We address three questions: What types of connected transactions lead to expropriation of minority shareholders? Which firms are more likely to expropriate? Does the market anticipate the expropriation by firms? On average, firms announcing connected transactions earn significant negative excess returns, significantly lower than firms announcing similar arm's length transactions. We find limited evidence that firms undertaking connected transactions trade at discounted valuations prior to the expropriation, suggesting that investors cannot predict expropriation and revalue firms only when expropriation does occur.

There is nothing else that compares to this concise introduction to the subject. I have no doubt it will help to increase your awareness of the importance of the interaction of mammalian systems with our natural environment. Highly accessible and nicely illustrated -- it is evident that a team of dedicated medics and geoscientists invested long nights editing and minimizing jargon. For this the world should be thankful! This 800+ page full-color tome highlights some of the significant interfaces of medicine and earth science. Most of the topics are fascinating, such as Skinner's review of the 'Mineralogy of Bone'. If you forgot what geophagy is, look no further than Peter Abrahams chapter. So finally there is an accessible primer for medical schools, I might predict that several institutions will begin using Selinus for courses in medical geology. The book's organization has laid a nice foundation for this emerging transdisciplinary study. The seven editors and some 50 contributors should be congratulated for sharing a common vision to its fruition. At 12 cents a page, I love it!!!!

FYI - Lastly, you should be aware that there is another book published by L-severe that has the title 'Medical Geology' (by Komatina). It is not worth a nickel and should be recycled, as it was poorly translated and largely ambiguous and full of errors. The translator should be taken out to the back and shot.

Inefficient and ineffective........2006-08-24

My prof. utilized this text for the first time last semester, and assumed it would be a good text. My background was Chem I, Chem II, Organic Chem, and Quantitative Analysis. I and a classmate with a similar background both found this text to be ineffective and inefficient. For example, one must page to Chapter 5 before finding a periodic table; every chemistry text I've seen thus far includes one on the opening pages. The treatment of atomic orbital energies was the worst I've ever seen - what introductory texts handle with a few well-chosen diagrams was written out into a page of excruciating text (p 146-147). Equations were given, but it was not always readily clear what each symbol stood for; examples were nearly non-existant. I was so excited about this course and I'm just grateful that the instructor was of much higher quality than the text.

Not very helpful........2005-12-09

This is not a very helpful text to anyone interested in aqueous geochemistry. One thing to consider before purchasing this text...Do you have a background in this material? If you do, then it might prove useful (i.e. professors and professionals). If not, then consider another text (i.e. students...I really don't think anyone will read a geochem text for fun). If you are a student and this is the required text, then buy another used text (see below) or checkout another text from the local/campus library to assist you. You will not find any thoroughly solved examples in this text. The so-called examples that are presented are not very helpful. Examples would have been great and considering the size of the text, one wonders why they were not included.

Students: checkout Drever or Langmuir or the old classic by Garrels and Christ. If you are new to this material, I would recommend Drever then follow up with Garrels.

This book may also serve to refresh the understanding of those who have forgotten what they may have learned or who previously failed to fully grasp the subject. A glossary of commonly used terms at the back of the book provides a convenient reference to most of the concepts presented.
