        —Washington Post

        —New York Law Journal

Few institutions have become as ferociously fought over in democratic politics as the courts. While political criticism of judges in this country goes back to its inception, today's intensely ideological assault is nearly unprecedented.

Spend any amount of time among the writings of contemporary right-wing critics of judicial power, and you are virtually assured of seeing repeated complaints about the "imperial judiciary." American conservatives contend not only that judicial power has expanded dangerously in recent decades, but that liberal judges now willfully write their policy preferences into law. They raise alarms that American courts possess a degree of power incompatible with the functioning of a democratic polity.

The Myth of the Imperial Judiciary explores the anti-judicial ideological trend of the American right, refuting these claims and taking a realistic look at the role of courts in our democracy to show that conservatives have a highly unrealistic conception of their power. Kozlowski first assesses the validity of the conservative view of the Founders' intent, arguing that courts have played an assertive role in our politics since their establishment. He then considers contemporary judicial powers to show that conservatives have greatly overstated the extent to which the expansion of rights which has occurred has worked solely to the benefit of liberals.

Kozlowski reveals the ways in which the claims of those on the right are often either unsupported or simply wrong. He concludes that American courts, far from imperiling our democracy or our moral fabric, stand as a bulwark against the abuse of legislative power, acting forcefully, as they have always done, to give meaning to constitutional promises.

Is the federal judiciary really out of control?

By way of answer to that question, Mark Kozlowski delivers 220 pages (plus endnotes) of fresh air and good sense -- all pointing to the conclusion that, nope, the federal judiciary is doing pretty much what it's always done and working pretty much the way the framers of the Constitution intended it to work.

It's a nice analysis. In his opening chapter, he sets out an eminently fair statement of what he calls the 'Imperial Judiciary thesis' (propounded most recently in Mark Levin's ill-reasoned screed _Men In Black_ -- endorsed, notably, by Ed Meese). In the rest of the book, he proceeds to make complete mincemeat of it. 'Originalism' (both the 200-proof Bork/Meese variety and the 100-proof version offered by Keith Whittington) get a pretty complete takedown -- along with, really, the entire Levin/Bork/Meese view of the Constitutional role of the judiciary.

I won't try to summarize Kozlowski's arguments here; I'll just recommend them highly to anyone looking for a sane voice in reply to the current round of anti-judiciary fanatics. This is an excellent and well-reasoned book that, unfortunately, remains timely two years after its publication. I guess there are still some people who need to read it.

I've bought a few other books on backyard orchards and have been disappointed. I found this book at the library and it's the best I've seen. The other books made pruning seem very intimidating so I've been putting it off. After reading this book, I feel like I'm ready to give it a try. It covers all the fruits that interest me, even oddballs like currants and persimmons. The book contains all the things a beginner needs to know such as solving pest problems (insect, disease and animal), how/where to plant, pruning and a number of other subjects. The chapters are arranged in a logical sequence and the book is very easy to read. The second half of the book is devoted to the different fruits. Fruits are arranged alphabetically and there is anywhere from one to four pages devoted to each one. Even though this may not sound like much, each page is nicely arranged and gives a wealth of information. I especially like the handy symbols on the outer edges of each fruit page. For example, one very handy symbol is "attention required". One gardening glove means it's easy to grow, two gloves means some attention is required, three means moderately difficult and four means the plant is demanding. I've had a rough time with my peach tree and sure enough, the book gives peaches four gloves (demanding). Wish I had read this book before I started planting my orchard. I plan to buy a copy of this book for use as a reference.

          5 out of 5 stars Very informative!.......2003-12-22

I bought this book as a gift but when I recieved it, I loved it so much that I wanted to keep it for my husband! Lots of information with pictures to help you with the various diseases fruit trees get. I would definately recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for My Needs.......2002-06-05

I was so pleased with the overall appearance of this book that I didn't even make it to the house to read it. I sat down at the picnic table and scanned it cover to cover! Backyard Fruits and Berries is helping me to identify and care for fruit trees and berries on a newly aquired property where the gardens have been neglected for years. The photos and illustrations are superb and the author instructs the reader how to make and use homemade organic products. This book is perfect for any beginner like myself. I even returned to purchase a second copy for my mother who already has basic knowledge. Thank you.

          4 out of 5 stars A good beginners guide........1999-05-26

This book is well organized and pleasing to read. The encyclopedia section is very informative as to ease of care, suitability for containers, recommended varieties, etc. There is also a good section on pruning and training of trees, which is the scariest part of growing fruit, in my opinion! A very good primer for the beginner!

I loved this book. I don't have a lot of space to work with. I think Martin did a wonderful job of explaining things in great detail without alot of the useless information. Would have loved for there to have been more pictures.

I expected a book that would give me a lot of information about gardening. Instead the book only gave me acouple paragraphs about certain vegetables and only one parargraph about nut tree's. The Author refers the reader to other books if they need more information any gardening book would be more detailed then this one. This book was a waste of my money.

              Book Description

This unique comprehensive volume in the Human Cell Culture Series encompasses research methodology for the growth and differentiation of all types of primary hematopoietic cells. Each of the twelve hematopoietic cell types is covered by a leading expert in the field, providing insightful background information along with detailed current culture and assay techniques. In addition to uses for research applications, current and future clinical applications of large-scale culture methods are also discussed. Further, the procurement and processing of primary human tissues is covered in detail. Because of the regulatory and ethical implications associated with use of human and fetal tissues, a separate chapter is included to guide scientists through these issues as well. The generous inclusion of figures and tables, along with a consistent format, makes critical information highly accessible to the reader. Additionally, numerous literature citations provide a valuable reference for students and professionals in the hematology, immunology, oncology and bioengineering fields.

              Book Description

This unique book is the key to computer contouring, exploring in detail the practice and principles using a personal computer. Contouring allows a three dimensional view in two dimensions and is a fundamental technique to represent spatial data. All aspects of this type of representation are covered including data preparation, selecting contour intervals, interpolation and griding, computing volumes and output and display.

Formulated for both the novice and the experienced user, this book initially conducts the reader through a step by step explanation of PC software and its application to personal data, and then presents the rationale and concepts for contouring using the computer.

Accompanying the book is a set of BASIC programs, in ASCII format, on an MS-DOS 360KB floppy disk. These programs implement eighteen interpolation methods, five gradient estimation techniques, and seven types of display, and are designed to be adapted or combined to suit a wide range of possible objectives concerning either the comparative study of contouring methodology or the practical production of contour displays.

3 out of 5 stars Content Good but Dated; Production Poor.......2005-03-15

In large part, I agree with Dr Shepard. The book is outrageously overpriced and production is poor. But no-one seems to have updated the material into a better form. As suggested, get the book on interlibrary loan, but the diskette is a bit problematic these days! Also assuming the library's magnetic security system hasn't wiped it by now (ours have!).

But that said, it's not a bad book as far as content is concerned. I've used it in classes, although not as a required text! I just hope someone will produce a cheaper, updated version with a CD! One day, when I get time.....

1 out of 5 stars Grossly Overpriced, Poorly Produced.......1999-12-10

For the money, I expect the very highest quality. This book is on the other end of the spectrum. Three major disappointments:

1.) The book is physically small (6" x 9.25") and only 300 pages in length. For the price, I expected a much larger treatise.

2.) This is the worst production of a book I've ever seen; and I have a lot of specialized, scientific references from many different publishers.

The type face is ugly and very difficult to read. Tiring on the eyes, too. The chapter and section headings have blurred edges on each letter. Perhaps the production manager thought this looked "cute," but it is distracting. The typeface and fonts should not be noticeable by the reader. This one gets in the way.

3.) The programs used in part 1 and provided both by listing and on diskette were written in 1988 in spaghetti-coded BASIC and never updated. No C code, no reference to the fact that even in 1992 (when the book was first published) most readers had PC's with more than 64K RAM and faster cpu's than a 4MHz 8088.

Although the book has been reprinted three times, it has not been updated. The references to published algorithms date back to the mid-1970's and make no mention of modern ones (e.g., "Numerical Recipes in C.")

All in all, this book is terribly overpriced for the value of the content. Yes, this is probably still the best reference for understanding computer contouring algorithms and math, but it should be published in paperback for much less money.

If you need the information, borrow a copy via interlibrary loan and make notes on what information you need.

                  Book Description

This EMS volume, the first edition of which was published as Dynamical Systems II, EMS 2, sets out to familiarize the reader to the fundamental ideas and results of modern ergodic theory and its applications to dynamical systems and statistical mechanics. The exposition starts from the basic of the subject, introducing ergodicity, mixing and entropy. The ergodic theory of smooth dynamical systems is treated. Numerous examples are presented carefully along with the ideas underlying the most important results. Moreover, the book deals with the dynamical systems of statistical mechanics, and with various kinetic equations. For this second enlarged and revised edition, published as Mathematical Physics I, EMS 100, two new contributions on ergodic theory of flows on homogeneous manifolds and on methods of algebraic geometry in the theory of interval exchange transformations were added. This book is compulsory reading for all mathematicians working in this field, or wanting to learn about it.

                    Book Description

Following the concept of the EMS series this volume sets out to familiarize the reader to the fundamental ideas and results of modern ergodic theory and to its applications to dynamical systems and statistical mechanics. The exposition starts from the basic of the subject, introducing ergodicity, mixing and entropy. Then the ergodic theory of smooth dynamical systems is presented - hyperbolic theory, billiards, one-dimensional systems and the elements of KAM theory. Numerous examples are presented carefully along with the ideas underlying the most important results. The last part of the book deals with the dynamical systems of statistical mechanics, and in particular with various kinetic equations. This book is compulsory reading for all mathematicians working in this field, or wanting to learn about it.

                                Book Description

In their lively and engaging edition of this sometimes neglected early play, Cox and Rasmussen make a strong claim for it as a remarkable work, revealing a confidence and sureness that very few earlier plays can rival. They show how the young Shakespeare, working closely from his chronicle sources, nevertheless freely shaped his complex material to make it both theatrically effective and poetically innovative. The resulting work creates, in Queen Margaret, one of Shakespeare's strongest female roles and is the source of the popular view of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick as `kingmaker'. Focusing on the history of the play both in terms of both performance and criticism, the editors open it to a wide and challenging variety of interpretative and editorial paradigms.

5 out of 5 stars A myopic of a king done in play format........2007-05-27

The three books that cover the life Henry VI are each masterpieces in their own right. They are each important parts of the multi-facted life of Henry VI. Wonderful history lesson.

                                5 out of 5 stars Not A Single Complaint!.......2000-04-27

This was one of Shakespeare's earliest plays. (possibly his third) Yet, there is nothing to indicate he was only starting out. Right away he grabs our attention with the funeral of King Henry V. Henry V's brothers Bedford and Gloucester help us to see the virtues and strengths of the deceased king. The Bishop of Winchester is well drawn as a comical villain who plots and plans, but never succeeds in doing any real damage. (Not until the next play anyway.) Talbot is memorable as the selfless hero of the play. York is memorable as the hero who defeats Joan of Arc. King Henry VI himself is interesting. First we see him as a helpless infant. By the third act, we see that he has both strengths and weaknesses. He makes the mistake of dividing the command between the rivals Somerset and York. But also, we see that he does not tolerate treason or neglect of duty. There are also many memorable scenes. The garden scene that foreshadows the War of the Roses is well drawn. The scene where York comforts his dying uncle is tragic beauty. Bedford's death in 3.2 has almost a divine tone. The death of Talbot and his son is very lamentable. York's sudden rise to power is captivating. Perhaps Shakespeare's greatest achievement in this play is that he simultaneously shows us England's war with France and the dissension with England itself.

4 out of 5 stars Part 3 and still running strong!.......2000-03-24

This is not quite as good as 1 or 2, but it is still excellent! Shakespeare grabs us with the dispute between Henry VI and York. While it seems to end peacefully it does not, and the war goes on! York's death in 1.4 is another landmark in Shakespeare's writing. The scene (2.5) where Henry finds true terror is horror, sorrow, and yet beauty and yet another moving part of the play. (The son that hath killed his father and the father that hath killed his son.) The war pauses in disaster for Henry and some comic relief is offered. But the horror starts all over again when Edward IV and Warwick have a falling out. The war starts over again, and the King of France gets involved! The scene where King Henry VI is reinstated is a scene of beauty and hope. While all of this is happening, Shakespeare carefully prepares the monstrously satanic character of Richard III. From here, the play just gets more and more bloody. A final moment of horror is offered when the eventual Richard III proudly compares himself to the one who betrayed Christ. In part 4 "Richard III," the real terror begins!
