Among the first few books I own on personal change management...Fine Read!.......2006-07-22
Among the many early books I own on personal change management, I like this book the most. I had bought it at about the time I had started to look out for options for my mid-life transition in the late 80's/early 90's.
During that period, the book gave me interesting insights about six critical pathways to personal achievement in the Age of Rapid Change.
First, let me outline the various chapters of the book to give readers a sense of how the book is structured:
- Introduction: Welcome to Curnch Time;
- Chapter 1 Break the Sound Barrier (The Listen Pathway);
- Chapter 2 Break the Code to Problems (The Prospect Pathway);
- Chapter 3 Break Away from Convention (The Innovate Pathway);
- Chapter 4 Break the Speed Limit (The Respond Pathway);
- Chapter 5 Break into the Future (The Adapt Pathway);
- Chapter 6: Break out in Front (The Lead Pathway);
In a nutshell, these were the intended results of the six pathways:
LISTEN pathway: discovering ways to tune in to what's out there;
PROSPECT pathway: finding out what you can do about them...by working smart...exploring purposefully...;
INNOVATE pathway: getting what you want with what you have;
RESPOND pathway: moving in new directions & taking short cuts to the payoffs...breaking rules...;
ADAPT pathway: reshaping yourself to suit external environmental conditions & learning to grow...;
LEAD pathway: pulling others with you in the pursuit of excellence...taking charge...;
Even till today, I always find the pathways still very relevant in today's context.
In the book, the author also offered some thirty FAST FORWARD techniques to help in expediting the journey along the pathways.
At the end of each chapter, the author obviously took pains to incorporate some fascinating picto-games to help in understanding possible barriers along the pathways. In fact, within each chapter there are one or two graphic symbols &/or illustrations to highlight key points of the particular chapter. I really enjoy reading books that are graphically illustrated as such, which makes reading a breeze!
Overall, I found the book entertaining, humourous & funny at times, but best of all, it had given me excellent perspectives to deal with a constantly changing world.
I would enthusiastically recommend this book to all busy professionals, particularly those still working in quiet desperation!.

Book Description
This comprehensive account of the management of the international monetary system from the 1944 Bretton Woods conference to the present day documents the structure and movements of the world economy during a period of dramatic change. Commissioned by the International Monetary Fund to mark its fiftieth anniversary, the work is nevertheless a fully independent one: written by an outside historian with full access to IMF archives and staff, and reviewed by an independent editorial committee. An objective study of issues and events that are often controversial, the book skillfully interweaves the history of the IMF with that of world economic developments after the Second World War. The International Monetary Fund was created at Bretton Woods, but almost immediately the rivalry between the Soviet Union and the West split the industrialized world into two economic camps. As a result the IMF's role underwent significant changes in the immediate post-war years. Harold James analyzes the system during a period of relative stability until 1971, when the United States abandoned fixed exchange rates. Since that time countries have experienced radical fluctuations in the values of their currencies and the IMF has contended with the consequences. James brings to this history a unique breadth of knowledge and mastery of both economic theory and archival sources. In a well-paced and smoothly flowing narrative, key themes emerge, including the IMF's increasing surveillance role in global captial markets and its responsivenes in ensuring international monetary stability. Recent political changes make it possible to bring to light the Fund's work promoting liberalization in planned economies. James also reveals how intellectual changes have led to increasing consensus in the world about what constitutes good economic policy. The gold standard and the dollar standard, he concludes, have been replaced by a new "information standard" under which acccurate economic information is crucial to continuing properity. A story of continuity as well as change, International Monetary Cooperation Since Bretton Woods offers enduring lessons about international economic coordination. It will be of strong interest to all those concerned with the future, as well as the past, of the world economy.

Book Description
Rule of law is one of the pillars of the modern world, and widely considered necessary for sustained economic development, the implementation of democracy and the protection of human rights. It has however emerged in Western liberal democracies, and some people question how far it is likely to take root fully in the different cultural, economic and political context of Asia. This book considers how rule of law is viewed and implemented in Asia. Chapters on France and the USA provide a benchmark on how the concept has evolved, is applied and is implemented in a civil law and a common law jurisdiction. These are then followed by twelve chapters on the major countries of East Asia, and India, which consider all the key aspects of this important issue.

Book Description
Presenting an analysis of the water relationships of the major groups of organisms: fungi, plants and animals, the text examines water stress at all levels of biological organization. Topics covered include: 1) organic osmotic agents: their distributions, modes of action, and mechanisms of regulation; 2) desiccation stress; mechanisms for preserving cellu lar integrity under conditions of low cellular water activity; 3) water stress and water compartmentation in plants; and 4) freezing stress: the prevention and regulation of ice formation in biological fluids, and mechanisms for overcoming the damaging effects of low temperatures on cellular integrity. Common adaptive strategies in diverse organisms are emphasized, as well as the fundamental physical-chemical properties of aqueous solutions that establish the nature of the interactions among water, low molecular weight solutes and macromolecules.

Irreplaceable!.......2000-10-25
I bought a copy of this dictionary when I was an undergraduate student of Geology, and I found it a very useful reference for almost all of my major subjects. Now that I'm a graduate student and a member of the faculty, I still find it handy when making lectures or doing my own course work. Since it is almost 10 years since it was published, I've been trying to decide whether I should replace it with a newer version, but none of the dictionaries I've seen can compare with the detail and thoroughness of this book. A very good buy.

The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Mathematics (Oxford Paperback Reference)

Book Description
Written in a clear, explanatory style, the new Third Edition of the Concise Science Dictionary contains more than 8,500 entries relating to physics, chemistry, biology (including human biology), the earth sciences, and astronomy, as well as terms that are commonly encountered in mathematics
and computer science. This new edition has been expanded to reflect recent advances molecular biology, genetics and genetic engineering, particle physics, cosmology, fullerene chemistry, immunology, and the techniques and material new to all the sciences. Providing both straightforward definitions
and invaluable background information on a wide range of scientific words, concepts, and topics, the entries also offer line-drawings whenever the meaning is best conveyed by way of a diagram. Charts and tables of essential scientific information are also integrated throughout.
With an extensive cross-referencing system that allows readers to place each entry in a broader scientific context, periodic tables, tables of SI units, and classifications of the plant and animal kingdoms, the Concise Science Dictionary is invaluable for non-specialists and students, and an
essential resource for professionals seeking an accessible guide to all scientific disciplines.
Customer Reviews:
The best choice for those who read a lot of popular science.......2004-08-17
This is a relatively inexpensive, concise, and handy dictionary of science. It is an updated version of the Concise Science Dictionary originally published by the Oxford University Press in 1984. This, the latest edition, is from 1999. It is aimed at professionals and an educated public who want a quick reference to terms in fields other than their own. Unlike science dictionaries found on the reference shelves of libraries, this book is small enough to fit into a knapsack.
As with all specialized dictionaries the task for editors is to decide what to leave in and what to leave out, and how technical to get. The people at Oxford University Press, one of the preeminent publishers of reference books in the world, have tried to eschew "unnecessary scientific jargon" while "always bearing in mind the needs of the readers" (from the Preface). Nonetheless, many of the entries are highly technical, having been written by experts. Clearly the editors have decided to err on the side of technical precision rather than anything resembling a dumbing down. The entry on "optical activity" for example is a mini essay of about 400 words adorned with a drawing of the D-, L-, and meso-forms of the isomers of tartaric acid along with several cross references to related terms in the dictionary. A two-page boxed entry on "El Nino" however is written in language easily accessible to the average high school graduate, as are many other entries including over 160 mini biographies of important scientists.
I also use The American Heritage Dictionary of Science, another handy (as opposed to comprehensive) reference and would like to make a quick comparison. The Heritage dictionary is a hardcover and contains noticeably more entries (16,000+ to perhaps 10,000 to 12,000 for the Oxford). However the Heritage hasn't been updated since the edition of 1988. Of course a lot has happened in science since then, which is why I purchased the Oxford paperback. The Heritage also uses the entries words or phrases in sentences, usually quoting some scientist whereas the Oxford does not bother. The Heritage also gives the pronunciation of most of the entries (e.g., it's "pree'-on," not "pri'-on" for the mad cow infectious agent) whereas the Oxford does not. The Oxford is more technical overall--it is especially strong in physics--and of course more up to date. The entries also tend to be more thorough. For example, the Oxford has a schematic drawing of a mammalian kidney system whereas the Heritage has only text.
There are seven appendices on SI units, fundamental constants, the solar system, the geographical time scale, plant and animal kingdom classifications, and the periodic table. Curiously, nowhere in the Oxford is the abbreviation SI defined or even noted! The Heritage gives it as the French Systeme International d'Unites (or International System of Units). This is actually an indication of how the Oxford assumes a greater scientific sophistication on the part of its readers than does the Heritage.
Bottom line here is that this book is practically a must for those who read a lot of science in fields other than their own. It is better overall than the Heritage because it is eleven years more up to date; and it is a better choice for most people than the more comprehensive hardcover volumes which are significantly more expensive, heavier and take up more space.

Lie Groups, Lie Algebras, and Some of Their Applications
ASIN: 0195033922 |
Book Description
The second volume of this authoritative work traces the material outlined in the first, but in far greater detail and with a much higher degree of sophistication. The authors begin with the theory of the electromagnetic interaction, and then consider hadronic structure, exploring the accuracy of the quark model by examining the excited states of baryons and mesons. They introduce the color variable as a prelude to the development of quantum chromodynamics, the theory of the strong interaction, and go on to discuss the electroweak interaction--the broken symmetry of which they explain by the Higgs mechanism--and conclude with a consideration of grand unification theories.

Thoughts that glow and words that burn.......2001-12-02
Even though I have read many books and short stories by great authors and is dazed, and full of admiration of their work, it happens once in a while, that a book or a story, that one has never heard mentioned goes right in to your heart and won't let go. That is what Mary Wilkins Freeman's stories did to me. I felt as if I had found a friend. There is such a pleasure to be found in her stories, the fluent and smooth style, easily understood by all, as well as a lesson in living your life at your own pace. She is so unaffected and natural in her storytelling, that these stories, which easily could have taken place, are sweet, tender, bitter and then full of resistence. Her character do not always behave. The stories are mostly about New England country women, for whom Freeman has obviouly a great sympathy for and she writes about them with respect and affection
