Insider's Guide to Insiders........2001-08-04

Gene Marcial, a columnist for Business Week Magazine, reveals the inside scoop on inside scoops. This somewhat dated (1995) book, published before the tech sector boom of the late 90's, has not lost much of its relevancy in disclosing how stock deals really go down. Marcial's jaded but no doubt factual account of how the entire financial system works is based on the inability of those on the inside to resist the temptation of greed and money. Using short chapters, each of which is a self-contained story about insider trading and how the financial world really works, Marcial introduces us to I-Bankers, portfolio managers, investment advisors of the rich and powerful, overvalued companies doing IPO's, and a host of real people who used inside information, sometimes legally, sometimes illegally, to manipulate the market which we all invest in. There are no real big surprises in this book, and I doubt anyone will be shocked by what they read. The most valuable lesson from this book is not that this activity occurs, but how it occurs, and how to best protect yourself (if at all possible) from being victimized by the market.

Fortunately I read this book before dot com fever took over the world, and although I have participated in buying into a few IPOs I've done so wisely thanks to Marcial. If more people understood what appears to be common sense on Wall Street, there would be fewer investors willing to call themselves Fools with pride.

In time, this book and others like it will become the lingua franca of a sobered investing public. These days it seems like only a sober few know. I'm glad I do.

Not so secrets of the Street.......2000-02-23

The thesis of this book appears to be that Wall Street insiders have the ability to cheat and use it. His examples virtually always used anonymous people. I am a bond I-banker so little in here really surprised me and in many ways it became boring. An avid stock investor with no finance experience may find it titillating where I did not.

I read the book hoping for interesting stories. There were a few like the female who had no problems using whatever tools were necessary. Otherwise, it was relatively bland. There are many other books on this subject more interesting.

A decent book for any person interested in the Street world.......1998-07-31

It is quite clear that the author had some first-hand experiences with people portrayed in his book. He (author) presents a clear picture of inner workings of the big and small Wall Street people. I can not say that he is biased in any sense; he just presents the truth. It may hurt, but that is the reality people experience every day. One can not simply close his/her eyes. The market is calling...

An extensive deposition of the true Wall Street.......1998-07-28

The author supports his point by giving multiple examples of illigal activities on the Street. The book is full of references to big and small names that keep the markets going. It presents an idea that only the fitties will survive the run. It clearly follows and correlates what the Street has been known for, making big money in the least amount of time. I think that many people of diverse professions will enjoy this book.

an oldie but a goodie.......2001-11-01

As a graduate student first learning about Fermi surfaces and metals I bought a copy of this book in a used book store. It was an excellent sorce for the basic ideas behind modern metals physics. IF you really appreciate old science books that have a lot of insight and like to work through physical concepts with intuitive models (as opposed to LARGE scale computation) then you will enjoy this book. A must have for collectors of old science tests!
