        Book Description

A clear, accessible `how to' approach to the key issues involved in a global equity offering: which capital markets to tap, and how (public offering vs. private placement); which stock exchanges to list on; structuring the underwriting syndicates; due diligence questions; road shows and marketing activities; whether to disclose forecasts; which lawyers should give `negative assurance' as to the disclosures in the prospectus; and how to negotiate representations, `outs', indemnification and other terms of the underwriting agreements. A group of leading securities practitioners from different capital markets -- the US, Hong Kong, France, Canada, Japan and Australia -- take the reader through each stage, using a case study of a global IPO of an emerging markets issuer to illustrate the process. Audience: A road map for securities lawyers, investment bankers, and senior finance officers of companies contemplating a global equity capital-raising exercise.

          Book Description

In this original book, distinguished cell biologist Heinz Herrmann explores how we understand living and other complex systems. In addition to the conventional basis of understanding that rests on abstract general theories, he proposes a new paradigm-conceptual continuity-as a way to compare systems of divergent complexity and to resolve problems in such complex systems as human societies.

Carefully written and well documented, FROM BIOLOGY TO SOCIOPOLITICS by Heinz Herrmann is a remarkable work. Herrmann has studied the processes by which we humans handle the complexity and chaos of natural systems in the decision-making process whether in our sociopolitical behavior or in our quest for scientific truth. Science is as dependent on a commonly recognized conceptual construct as it is on a recognized vocabulary or classification system. Without vocabulary we could not communicate and without a conceptual construct we could not reason. Herrmann proposes a new paradigm for science and society -- conceptual continuity. Conceptual continuity provides a construct for the intellectual encapsulation of conplex or chaotic observations within the precepts of science enabling its orderly progress without the need for rejection of phenomena whose causes are unknowable or whose processes are complex. Herrmann's articulation of that paradigm is remarkable enough for the sciences alone but even more remarkable is his generalization of "conceptual continuity" to the realm of sociopolitics. In hindsight the generalization seems simple and natural but most great ideas do.

The treatment presented in the work is especially significant because it is accomplished through the direct application of careful logical thinking and not flung out of a computer as reworked information, so common in this electronically driven information age. The work is a tribute to the human mind and an example of the advantage that the wise ones, the sapiens, still hold over the flawless memories of the electronic ones -- an exquisite example of the ability of the human intellect to raise information to the level of knowledge and, through careful generalization, to elevate knowledge to the level of wisdom. The human triumphs through perfert , selective "forgetting" rather than through perfect memory. Wisdom is achieved through careful documentation, analysis and generalization rather than through flawless recapitulation. Ultimately society and science will be moved more by wisdom than by information. FROM BIOLOGY TO SOCIOPOLITICS is a clear articulation of a remarkable insight by a truly wise man and it is one of the most thought provoking works I have had the pleasure to read.

I read FROM BIOLOGY TO SOCIOPOLITICS on the heals of reading some works by Amartya Sen who wrote extensively on the role of "entitlement" as the social glue derived from government and creating a mutual need for induvidual success at all social levels. Sen was impressed with the lack of famine in democratic societies and his perception of of mutual needs or entitlements in those societies was a remarkable insight. It won the Nobel Prize. Herrmann's insight strikes me as no less remarkable.

              Book Description

Interest in marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) is very high because it plays an important role in oceanic and global carbon cycling, which in turn impacts weather. Understanding the processes involved in the transformations of carbon, phosphorus, nitrogen, and other major elements in the oceans has been a primary goal of marine biogeochemists and oceanographers over the past decade.

This book, in 16 chapters with over 170 figures and tables, reports on the major advances in this area by a distinguished group of international chemical and biological oceanographers. Additionally, it focuses on the role of DOM in elemental cycling - where the greatest informational need currently exists.

Biological cycling of the major elements through DOM is assessed throughout, with particular emphasis on the role of marine microbes as active agents in the processing of this material
The ocean science community's advances for inclusion of DOM in both ecosystem and global circulation models are evaluated

                  Book Description

For scientific, technological and organizational reasons, the end of World War II (in 1945) saw a rapid acceleration in the tempo of discovery and understanding in nuclear physics, cosmic rays and quantum field theory, which together triggered the birth of modern particle physics. The first fifteen years (1945-60) following the war's end - the "Startup Period" in modern particle physics -witnessed a series of major experimental and theoretical developments that began to define the conceptual contours (non-Abelian internal symmetries, Yang-Mills fields, renormalization group, chirality invariance, baryon-lepton symmetry in weak interactions, spontaneous symmetry breaking) of the quantum field theory of three of the basic interactions in nature (electromagnetic, strong and weak). But it took another fifteen years (1960-75) - the "Heroic Period" in modern particle physics - to unravel the physical content and complete the mathematical formulation of the standard gauge theory of the strong and electroweak interactions among the three generations of quarks and leptons. The impressive accomplishments during the "Heroic Period" were followed by what is called the "period of consolidation and speculation (1975-1990)", which includes the experimental consolidation of the standard model (SM) through precision tests, theoretical consolidation of SM through the search for more rigorous mathematical solutions to the Yang-Mills-Higgs equations, and speculative theoretical excursions "beyond SM".

Within this historical-conceptual framework, the author - himself a practicing particle theorist for the past fifty years - attempts to trace the highlights in the conceptual evolution of modern particle physics from its early beginnings until the present time. Apart from the first chapter - which sketches a broad overview of the entire field - the remaining nine chapters of the book offer detailed discussions of the major concepts and principles that prevailed and were given wide currency during each of the fifteen-year periods that comprise the history of modern particle physics. Those concepts and principles that contributed only peripherally to the standard model are given less coverage but an attempt is made to inform the reader about such contributions (which may turn out to be significant at a future time) and to suggest references that supply more information. Chapters 2 and 3 of the book cover a range of topics that received dedicated attention during the "Startup Period" although some of the results were not incorporated into the structure of the standard model. Chapters 4-6 constitute the core of the book and try to recapture much of the conceptual excitement of the "Heroic Period", when quantum flavordynamics (QFD) and quantum chromodynamics (QCD) received their definitive formulation. [It should be emphasized that, throughout the book, logical coherence takes precedence over historical chronology (e.g. some of the precision tests of QFD are discussed in Chapter 6)]. Chapter 7 provides a fairly complete discussion of the chiral gauge anomalies in four dimensions with special application to the standard model (although the larger unification models are also considered). The remaining three chapters of the book (Chapters 7-10) cover concepts and principles that originated primarily during the "Period of Consolidation and Speculation" but, again, this is not a literal statement. Chapters 8 and 9 report on two of the main directions that were pursued to overcome acknowledged deficiencies of the standard model: unification models in Chapter 8 and attempts to account for the existence of precisely three generations of quarks and leptons, primarily by means of preon models, in Chapter 9. The most innovative of the final three chapters of the book is Chapter 10 on topological conservation laws. This last chapter tries to explain the significance of topologically non-trivial solutions in four-dimensional (space-time) particle physics (e.g. 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles, instantons, sphalerons, global SU(2) anomaly, Wess-Zumino term, etc.) and to reflect on some of the problems that have ensued (e.g. the "strong CP problem" in QCD) from this effort. It turns out that the more felicitous topological applications of field theory are found - as of now - in condensed matter physics; these successful physical applications (to polyacetylene, quantized magnetic flux in type-II low temperature superconductivity, etc.) are discussed in Chapter 10, as a good illustration of the conceptual unity of modern physics.

Virginia Astley.Cult singer songwriter from the early 80s whose family lived in Moulsford Oxfordshire. The village close to Alice Country which inspired her first album, the perfect soundtrack to Alice in Wonderland. An instrumental album with added SFX such as birdsong and church bells. Titles like A Summer Long Since Past and Summer Of Their Dreams.
Virginia Astley is,in fact,a reincarnation of Alice and not just because that's her middle name.
Her late father was born in Warrington and moved to Grappenhall in the late 40s which is the next village to Daresbury.
Since that first album Virginia was to become known as a singer and many of her songs have uncanny similarities with Wonderland and even the real life Alice. In "Tree Top Club" comes the line "I bought you sweets and comics from the grocery shop" which is paralleled in the early life of Alice Liddell.
So many others:I Live In Dreams,Nothing Is What It Seems,Over The Edge Of The World.
And another parallel in the fact that Virginia Astley was morally sound, and a reminder that "Alice was the most sensible person in a land of freaks" against a description of Virginia Astley as "unaffected by operating in a business not known for many normal people".
Virginia long ago found her own turf and stayed in it

                      Book Description

This first-time translation makes available to English-speaking readers a seminal essay in Latin American thought by one of Latin America's leading intellectuals. Originally published in Mexico in 1957, "The Role of the Americas in History" explores the meaning of the history of the Americas in relation to universal history. Amy A. Oliver's introduction provides an excellent overview of such major themes in Zea's thought as marginality, humanism, Catholicism and Protestantism, philosophy of history, and liberation.

This is a classic history of mathematics and is surprisingly readable considering it was first published in 1912. It covers math from ancient times up to the late 19th century. It was interesting to read about how math developed down through the centuries, and who the famous mathematicians were and their contributions. I was most in interested in developments since the Renaissance, but I also enjoyed the author's coverage of the Middle Ages and Arabic contributions to algebra. For example, you'll learn about Al-Khwarizmi, Abu-Kamil, and Al Karaji. In the Middle Ages there was Leonardo Fibonacci of Pisa (who gave his name to the famous fibonacci series), who lived in the 13th century (not to be confused with da Vinci who lived later), and was so renowned for his abilities that a competition was once staged by the Holy Roman Emperor to demonstrate his prowess. In fact, these sorts of math contests were quite common in the Middle Ages, which I didn't know about. Three questions were posed, such as give a number that when increased or decreased by 5 remains a square, and Leonardo was the only contestant to get all three right. Leonardo also was one of the first to introduce the Hindu/Arabic number system into Europe. He wrote a number of books, of which several survive today, which made him a celebrity as much for his writing talents as for his mathematical abilities during his lifetime, and the true extent of his contributions wasn't recognized until recent times. He is considered the most important mathematical theorist after Diophantus of Alexandria until Fermat in the 17th century--a span of 2000 years. But he is only one of hundreds of important mathematicians whose contributions are discussed. This book is still a very readable classic history that is still a valuable resource on the subject almost 100 years later.

4 out of 5 stars a solid overview of centuries of math.......2002-05-27

This book is a readable account of the history of math from ancient times down to the 20th century. I particulary liked the history of Greek math and then Indian and Arab math -- those chapters were especially well done. It's amazing that not much happened mathematically speaking until practically the renaissance -- the burning of the library of Alexandria really held up most signficant developments. The other terrific chapters were on Newton and Leibnitz, plus all the French and Italian mathematicians like LaPlace and Legrange. I sometimes wished for a bit more biographical anecdotes, but the author covers hundreds of mathematicians. My only small gripe is that he quotes extensive sections in Latin and French with no translation as if we all have a perfect reading knowledge of these languages, even the 16th century versions complete with archaic terms. Still, this book is a good reference and overview of major math developments. I had some trouble following all the math, but I'm not a mathematician either.
