While the valuation of standard American option contracts has now achieved a fair degree of maturity, much work remains to be done regarding the new contractual forms that are constantly emerging in response to evolving economic conditions and regulations. Focusing on recent developments in the field, American-Style Derivatives provides an extensive treatment of option pricing with an emphasis on the valuation of American options on dividend-paying assets. The book begins with a review of valuation principles for European contingent claims in a financial market in which the underlying asset price follows an Ito process and the interest rate is stochastic and then extends the analysis to American contingent claims. In this context the author lays out the basic valuation principles for American claims and describes instructive representation formulas for their prices. The results are applied to standard American options in the Black-Scholes market setting as well as to a variety of exotic contracts such as barrier, capped, and multi-asset options. He also reviews numerical methods for option pricing and compares their relative performance. The author explains all the concepts using standard financial terms and intuitions and relegates proofs to appendices that can be found at the end of each chapter. The book is written so that the material is easily accessible not only to those with a background in stochastic processes and/or derivative securities, but also to those with a more limited exposure to those areas.

As a former student of Professor Detemple and a former professor, he is simply one of the best organized, most articulate, and without hesitation, one of the truly talented teachers and authors I have ever met.

I just bought the book, and eagerily await its delivery. If his book is as wonderful as he is, I expect a truly outstanding book.

Dreams often reflect the social environment of the dreamer and thus prove to be a useful tool when examining the group dynamics.
It can be used to identify possible problems within that group and to create common ground among the participants. A really great inroduction to the mysteries of rocks.......2006-01-29

This is really a book of great photographs with explanations rather than a text book. Still it gives an easy introduction to what geology is all about and a complete novice or maybe a teenager thinking of choosing to study geology at university level would get a lot out of this book. Any lack of text actually makes the book a more relaxing read! What's suprising is that it makes looking at the microscopic view of rocks accessible to the layman and I think in itself that makes the book a good buy.

Looking beyond our feet.......2004-10-23

This book is as much about the beauty of the Earth as it is about how the Earth is formed. It is not a classic-style text book, but a book that illustrates the more spectacular aspects of the Earth while providing a clear and well written explanation of how these rocks are formed.

It is a perfect gift for anybody with a passing interest in geology, and in my case the family of a geologist, who often ask, "Just what is it about rocks that you like so much?" This book provides an elegant and beautifully illustrated answer to their question. Last year I bought a copy for each member of my family and they loved it.

I'm very puzzled by the reviewer who said he hid the book because he was embarrassed that he bought it. Actually this is not a bad book at all. It is a very pretty account of the rock cycle, of the formation of rocks and landforms. It is not for the academic geologist, but for the hobbyist and amateur, well-written, well-explained and very well illustrated. Actually it is a wonderful book, perfect for rock collectors and so on.

Besides its general coverage of standard geology, it is unique for its microscopic photos of rocks and minerals. You will see rocks in a new way, and in these photos you can really see the processses that created the rocks. You can see details that you can't see macroscopically.

Anyway, I suspect that reviewer was being dishonest. This book is certainly no field guide to rocks, but it never claims to be. It really is wonderful for rock hounds and hikers and people who are curious about geology.

Beneath Our Feet.......2001-11-27

As an avid amateur, I found this book delightful. Beautiful photographs, and easy to understand explanations. In particular, the detailed descriptions of the thin sections were extremely educational. Most texts that include photographs of thin sections are way over my head. This book was easy to comprehend, and afforded me an insight to thin sections, and why petrologists use them. If you have ever been puzzled by what a thin section actually reveals, buy this book. That answer alone is worth it.

By far the best introduction to geology.......2001-11-24

Beautifully organized and exceptionally clear explanations, at the microscopic level, of how the various kinds of rocks are formed, and of their mineral grain structure. Many photographs with full and lucid analysis. The coordination of text and illustration are superb. Truly a masterpiece for the interested layman.

Ohrn is one of today's most respectable ab initio quantum chemists. In his newest book he precisely directs the reader from the rigorous mathematics of groups and group algebras to the application of simplifying problems in quantum chemistry. This book contains much more mathematics than any other book on this subject and is a must for anyone who cares to know the nuts and bolts of group theory as applied to chemistry. I highly recommend Yngve's book and know that most practitioners of quantum chemistry will benefit much more from this text than from any other watered-down and inadequate text on the subject such as that written by Cotton.

It begins by tracing the indebtedness of Australian cinema to the classical narrative style of Hollywood filmmaking, with its firm grasp of melodrama. Several films are studied in detail within this framework, including Picnic at Hanging Rock, Blood Oath, The Empty Beach, and Shame. The book continues by comparing the problems faced by "high" British cinema of the 1940s and 1950s with those faced by Australian cinema of the 1970s and the 1980s in the attempts by both countries to establish national film industries. Many parallels are drawn between the responses of British and Australian cinema to the overall dominance of Hollywood, despite the thirty-year gap between these two periods of filmmaking.
