Might be useful to some.......2001-06-02

It's such a great-looking book and so well laid out, I wanted to like it but frankly this book never went beyond the obvious. It stays with the basic concepts of organization in a way that is on the level of organizing a locker in Junior High, which puzzled me. The only person I can imagine needing this book would be someone who never had to organize anything before. Perhaps a filing clerk just out of high school?

As a financier I found this book to be instructive, informative and specific. The Author sticks to what matters to a business owner, rather than what a bean counter would find interesting.

This text book is very good for beginner who interest in fiber optics

An excellent undergraduate level textbook.......1999-03-24

Overall this book is a great textbook. The author explains many of the topics clearly although it falls short (only one short chapter) in the subject of incorporating fiber optics into communication systems. There are a lot of errors in the book and the student must always turn to the errata. The problems at the end of the chapter are a bit easier than most technical textbooks. Good examples to show how equations are used.

This book has a reasonable treatment of fiber optics, but is more academic than practical in nature. I'd recommend the interested reader start with Kaminow's "Optical fiber telecommunications IIIA & IIIB" or Agrawal's "Fiber Optic Communications Systems".

stop & inspect before you buy.......2000-04-01

I have read the first couple of chapters and was not pleased with the style. At times, it may lead to confusion. For instance, N, the number of particles in a Debye sphere is declared to be "not just a large value, but it is an extremely large value", N>>>1, by which it is meant that N=10^k, where k>>1. Yet in the first example that is given, N is roughly 100. At other times, the style is distracting as the author seems to put the cart before the horse with too many "we shall see that"s or with somewhat ambiguous summaries of what will follow three subsections later (Landau damping for example).

I'm not sure whether this confusion is a byproduct of the translation, but my suggestion would be to check this title out before committing yourself to it.
