Want to read just one bond book? Make it this one.......1998-08-05

This is my favorite book on bonds. It is basic, but does not dodge technicalities; all necessary fundamentals are explained very clearly including why total return is more relevant than yield; real-world issues and market practices are addressed critically. A few peccadilloes take away the fifth star: the book is very US-focused, so European or Asian readers may want to look for a second source; it contains some typos; it gets overcommercial at times, as in "there is a formula for this, look it up in this other Fabozzi book"; and performance evaluation could be more detailed than "ring one of these software vendors". But great book anyway.

Many dehesa zones in marginal areas are suffering from the abandonment of traditional farming practices. Herbivore grazing affects grassland dynamics, changing the species colonisation and extinction relationships via consumption, mechanical disturbance, seed dispersal and altered soil fertility due to dung-borne nutrient input. This paper analyses changes to floristic composition, species richness and heterogeneity as well as soil and light resources in relation to grazing abandonment in two characteristic topography-related types of dehesa habitat (upper slope and lower slope grasslands). Vegetation surveys were undertaken using five replicates in each habitat type in grazed and abandoned grasslands in the Guadarrama range in Central Spain with distric cambisol soils. Additional measurements of light and soil parameters were also undertaken. The results show an effect of grazing on resource availability. In general there was a smaller proportion of fine matter (clay), organic matter, total nitrogen, assimilable potassium and readily available water in abandoned as opposed to grazed zones. We did not find any effect of grazing on phosphorous availability. Abandonment reduces light availability at ground level in lower slope grasslands (wet meadows) but does not produce a significant reduction in upper slope (driest) grasslands, although there is an increased spatial heterogeneity in the availability of light associated with the presence of scattered shrubs. While the total number of species in abandoned zones did not significantly differ from grazed zones, floristic composition changed dramatically with abandonment in both habitat types, with less than 50% of common species. Also, floristic heterogeneity at the small scale increased with abandonment. Designers of agri-environmental policies applied to Mediterranean grasslands should be aware of the risk of widespread grazing abandonment and promote the diversification of grazing regimes across the landscape to maximize species diversity and take advantage of the benefits of low-density grazing in other functions of the ecosystem such as their productivity and stability.

The extensive expansion of urban centres over agricultural land in Indonesia is poorly monitored due to the ill-equipped land monitoring system. The objective of this study was to assess the applicability of the vegetation-impervious surface-soil (V-I-S) model in classifying land use in the context of medium-sized and densely populated cities of developing countries. The V-I-S model describes the urban environment as a linear combination of vegetation, impervious surface and soil. As such, it is well suited to relate remotely sensed data, which are closely related to land cover, to biophysical aspects of urbanising environments. A Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper image acquired in June 1994 (dry season) was used to demonstrate the usefulness of the V-I-S model to map urban land use of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The V-I-S model was applied in a hierarchical classification scheme, in which each level of the hierarchy was designed to segment one or more land use classes considering each component of the V-I-S model. The performance of this approach was evaluated by comparison to a standard maximum likelihood classification. Official land use maps produced in 1994 were used to validate both classifications. The results showed that the V-I-S model applied in the hierarchical classification scheme provides more accurate land use maps (80% overall accuracy) than the maximum likelihood algorithm (53% overall accuracy). The higher accuracy is evidence of the relationships between the V-I-S model and urban land use, based on the physical composition. However, the accuracy of the land use map produced, was not at the level of practical application needed by urban planners. Therefore, further studies need to be conducted to improve the accuracy of land use maps produced using the V-I-S model.

Hans Christian ^D/Orsted (1777-1851) was one of the leading scientists of the nineteenth century, having played a crucial role in founding electromagnetism. Unfortunately for the English-speaking world, almost all of his research was published in other languages, particularly his native Danish. This book will help to elevate ^D/Orsted to his rightful place in the history of science by finally making his most important scientific works available in English. The book includes, for example, ^D/Orsted's account of his revolutionary experiments in electromagnetism. In 1820, he discovered that a compass needle deflects from magnetic north when an electric current is switched on or off in a nearby wire. This showed that electricity and magnetism were related phenomena, a finding that laid the foundation for the theory of electromagnetism and for research that later created such technologies as radio, television, and fiber optics. The unit of magnetic field strength was named the ^D/Orsted in his honor. Selections here also show the extraordinary breadth of ^D/Orsted's interests, which range through a long and prolific career from the study of plant alkaloids and the compression of fluids to the nature of light and the "natural science" of beauty. The writings are taken from scientific papers, ^D/Orsted's correspondence, and reports of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. The book will not only draw long overdue attention to ^D/Orsted's own work but will also shed new light on the nature of scientific study in the nineteenth century.

This is a very well-written and semi-ficitionalized memoir of the author's years growing up and working in a 'mom-n'-pop' jewelry store. The characters make it interesting, funny and at times, poignant. The author takes us from his first job search (and his mixed feelings about working) to how he grew into the patterns of life at the store, until he eventually became the store's owner.At the same time, it becomes the story of life in a mid-sized city in America, where personal service and even friendship used to be the standard of the times, until giant discount stores took over the landscape. That short description cannot begin to portray the pleasure you will get from reading this book. C. L. Rossman
