4 out of 5 stars Tips on how to become more valuable........2004-05-28

A short summary of good tips on becoming valuable to your employer. Somervill outlines a number of ways to become a better employee through self improvement. She also cautions people to find the job they are most interested in, rather than fight it out in some job you don't care for. The text of the book is that by becoming more valuable to your employer, you can improve both your job and yourself. Somervill also states that employees need to be true to themselves, since in today's marketplace, employers regularly discard workers. Those who seek to improve themselves will always be more marketable in the long run.
I found this book a very practical read. For those who need suggestions on how to improve their jobs and themselves, this is a good starting point.

Key (Federal Reserve Board Division of International Finaces, Washington, D.C.) is a close study analyzing the involvement of the World Trade Organization and the effects of the General Agreement on Trade in Services upon the liberalization and regulation of the financial services sector. The Doha Round And Financial Services Negotiations covers topics such as e-finance, the three "pillars" of liberalization (national treatment and market access, nondiscriminatory structural barriers, and freedom of capital movements), the repercussions of and pertaining to foreign direct investement, meta-rules that are crucial to developing and applying sound rules to financial systems, and much more. A scholarly and technical treatise, written especially for advanced economics students and field professionals.

    Book Description

This book seeks to answer one central question: do the U.S. cable and satellite retransmission statutory licenses comply with the TRIPs minimum standard? As with all legal problems, the resolution of ambiguity provides the challenge and the interest. In this regard, by far the greatest ambiguity is created by the use of the term 'equitable renumeration' in the TRIPs retransmission norm. Resort will be had to not only the drafting history of the TRIPs incorporated Berne Convention article, but also to the discipline of economics and to the field of restitutionary monetary awards in common law countries, to seek to provide a meaning for that term.

This book is unique in so far as it purports to undertake to provide an analysis whereby a TRIPs compliance issue is considered fully at a theoretical level in an attempt to provide an answer. In so doing, it is hoped that the analysis will provide a methodology for the consideration of the compliance of national laws with intellectual property treaty obligations, which is of use to anyone who may wish to consider such compliance issues in the future.

    Book Description

Based on the classic ecosystem studies at Hubbard Brook in New Hampshire, this book presents an in-depth analysis of the biogeochemistry of a terrestrial ecosystem. It synthesizes long-term data on precipitation and streamwater chemistry, hydrology and weathering, and also considers the dynamics of atmospheric gases and water as they flow through the system. Hailed as "ÄaÜ standard for ecological teaching and research for years to come", the book "bristles with unsettled questions, intriguing problems, and technical challenges". This new edition brings the 1977 volume up to date and presents the ongoing Hubbard Brook study to a new generation of ecologists. The authors have international reputations: they won the $150,000 Tyler Prize in Environmental Science in 1993, and Likens also won the $250,000 Australia Prize in 1994.

In 1977, this book transformed a scientific field. In the 1990s, its reprinting is mainly of historic interest. Not much of the biogeochemistry data from Hubbard Brook in the intervening 20 years have been integrated into this "2nd edition."

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of X-ray Diffraction.......2000-09-20

Klug & Alexanders book on X-ray diffraction has since it's release, of the first edition in 1954, been and still is the ultimate book on X-ray diffraction procedures. It covers any subject of interest to X-Ray Diffraction form "Elementary Crystallography" and "Properties and Production of X-rays" through "Precision and Errors" to "Operations of X-ray machinery" and many more. Even today, over 25 years after the release of the lasest edition, "X-ray Diffraction Procedures" is because of it's thoroughness, attention to detail, number and depth of subjects dealt with still a must for anybody working with X-Ray Diffraction. The depth, width and fundamental nature of the subject dealt with, and the book as a whole, more than makes the fact the it isn't up to date with the latest technical innovations. There can be no douth that "X-Ray Diffraction Procedures" is the Bible of X-ray diffraction.

                        Book Description

This monograph is a technical explication of the relationships between data-gathering methods and reporting methods in large-scale educational assessments, with the focus on `marketbasket' reporting. Complex survey-based assessments such as the National Assessment for Educational Progress (NAEP) use advanced data-gathering designs such as student- and item-sampling. Analyzing and reporting the resulting data falls outside the methods of familiar every-pupil testing, and sophisticated models and analyses need to be carried out to bring the data to a common reporting scale. Marketbasket reporting, or the reporting of results in a form that can be understood in terms of scores on a tangible collection of actual test items, has been proposed as a way to make the results of complex surveys more accessible to consumers of the data. For the first time anywhere, this book fully explains the definitions, concepts, methods, and issues that underlie marketbasket reporting in a clear and rigorous presentation, and illustrates the ideas with actual data from NAEP. This knowledge is essential for sound policy decisions, assessment design, data analysis, and reporting.

3 out of 5 stars Book not well received by students.......1998-11-19

We used this book to teach an introductory Java course for experienced programmers. Without exception the students didn't like the book. They felt they really couldn't learn from it--topics are covered too quickly. They wanted a text with a more step-by-step approach and one with more examples.

5 out of 5 stars A very well organized, and laid out plan of Java.......1998-06-04

I like the book for the way the approach is organized, and all the components, and details are patiently and thoroughly studied, no assumption is made about what you know , and the plan to this complicated program is laid out in a very understandable way

4 out of 5 stars Looking for learn real 1.1 java coding???.......1998-01-17

If you are looking to learn real java 1.1 coding then this is the book for you. Mastering java 1.1 is one of the faw books out today that will see you have to code with java to the 1.1 spec ! !

4 out of 5 stars Not too shabby.......1997-06-19

This is a very good book for those who want to get a good start on learning Java 1.1. Even for those with no OOP experience, it teaches you abstraction, interfacing, overloading, and the basic Java syntax. As far as all that goes, it's great.

When it starts getting into AWT, it starts jumping ahead a bit too quickly. AWT is something that needs lots of coverage and lots of examples and explaining, and Mastering Java 1.1 is lacking here. The on-CD examples sometimes lack the .java source, and in some cases, the .java sources are riddled with compile time and runtime errors, or trivial typos, like getId() instead of getID(), proving that the publisher (or whomever) didn't prooftest them. I've even caught the book using a few deprecated usages such as resize() instead of setSize().

Overall, not a bad book at all. I've got a firm grasp on the basics and non-visual part of Java, but I'm frustrated with it when it comes to learning AWT: GUI, animation, images, etc. This book leaves the reader to desire something a bit more complete and less in a hurry.
