    Book Description

A concise and thoroughly practical guide to building and installing car alarms. The project-based approach makes this book ideal for students and hobbyists; design and installation engineers will also find it of interest.

Every circuit in this book is clearly described and illustrated, and contains components that are easy to source. Advice and guidance are based on real experience, and the designs themselves have been rigorously put to use on some of the most car-crime-ridden streets in the world. The designs in this book include systems as simple as a warning beacon, a range of immobilisers, and a basic alarm system; and more advanced systems that include add-on features such as a personal attack button and a courtesy light delay. Intruder detectors are described, and full constructional details are given including a guide to fault diagnosis and step-by-step installation instructions.

3 out of 5 stars It could be better.......2002-02-27

A good little book with some interesting car security systems, the bad thing is there are some errors in the drawings of printed circuit boards and layouts of components.
Also in the "Basic Alarm System" diagram the author ommited the component list, i.e. values of resistors, capacitors, transistors, etc.
I was able to deduce the components from the component layout but it was for sure laborious.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for technician........2000-06-19

This book covers some basic and advance alarm systems, contains quite a lot of pics about electric panels, but I think to read and understand this book is quite hard for general people who are not mechanicians, but It is great for those who have some knowledge and are curious about how these alarms work.

                  Book Description

This book calls the attention of the scientific community, government organizations and non-government agencies, and the general public to arguably one of the most important and complex of the world's tropical rainforest regions – the greater Panama Canal Watershed. The Rio Chagres basin is the primary source for water to operate the Panama Canal, and also supplies water for electricity generation and potable water for municipal use, but this important national resource is largely unstudied from a scientific point of view. The broad objective of the book is to characterize and understand the physical and ecological components of an isolated and largely pristine tropical rainforest, and describe how the different natural components of a tropical rainforest interact with one another.

                      Book Description

The publication of The Broadview Anthology of Seventeenth-Century Verse and Prose is a literary event; this comprehensive collection is the first anthology of the period to reflect the breadth of seventeenth-century studies in recent decades. Containing the work of over one hundred writers, from John Chamberlain at the beginning of the century to Elisabeth Singer Rowe at its end, The Broadview Anthology of Seventeenth-Century Verse and Prose has generous selections from the work of all major writers, and a representation of the work of virtually every writer of significance. The editors have included complete works wherever possible. A headnote by the editors introduces each author, and each selection has been newly annotated.

While material that has traditionally made up much of the 17th-century canon is well represented, there are two areas in particular in which scholarship of the 17th-century has changed, and both are reflected in this new Broadview anthology; first, the work of women writers has begun to move out of the margins, and in this anthology such work figures prominently, with extensive selections not only from canonical writers such as Behn and Bradstreet, but also from other writers (such as Katherine Philips and Margaret Cavendish) who have been receiving considerable scholarly attention in recent years.

Second, there has been a redefinition of literature to include popular culture (and a corresponding shift towards a more historical approach). In a radical departure from the exclusively "high" culture taught in previous generations, this anthology includes memoirs, letters, political texts, travel writing, prophetic literature, street ballads, and pamphlet literature. Writing from America as well as from the British Isles is here, alongside a full representation of the literary poetry and prose of the period, such as the poetry of Jonson; the prose of Bacon; the metaphysical poetry of Donne, Herbert, Marvell, and others; the lyric verse of Herrick; and substantial selections from the poetry and prose of Milton and Dryden. (While Samson Agonistes is here in its entirety, Milton's epic poems have been excluded, in order to allow space for other works not so readily accessible elsewhere.)

At the dawn of the twentieth century, imperial powers controlled most of the globe. Within a few decades after World War II, many of the great empires had dissolved, and more recently, multinational polities have similarly disbanded. This process of reallocating patterns of authority, from internal hierarchy to inter-state relations, proved far more contentious in some cases than in others. While some governments exited the colonial era without becoming embroiled in lengthy conflicts, others embarked on courses that drained their economies, compelled huge sacrifices, and caused domestic upheaval and revolution. What explains these variations in territorial policy? More specifically, why do some governments have greater latitude to alter existing territorial arrangements whereas others are constrained in their room for maneuver?

In Ending Empire, Hendrik Spruyt argues that the answer lies in the domestic institutional structures of the central governments. Fragmented polities provide more opportunities for hard-liners to veto concessions to nationalist and secessionist demands, thus making violent conflict more likely. Spruyt examines these dynamics in the democratic colonial empires of Britain, France, and the Netherlands. He then turns to the authoritarian Portuguese empire and the break-up of the Soviet Union. Finally, the author submits that this theory, which speaks to the political dynamics of partition, can be applied to other contested territories, including those at the heart of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

                            Book Description

The life of Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778), the man who gave living organisms two Latin names, is celebrated afresh in this newly revised and magnificently illustrated edition of the definitive biography. In his native Sweden, Linnaeus is revered by children as the "Prince of Flowers" and by adults as a great biologist, the author of classics on natural history, and, owing to his impassioned study of the sex life of plants, as history's foremost "botanical pornographer."

Linnaeus was of pivotal importance in the Age of Enlightenment. Though an adventurous traveler, keen collector, zoologist, and geologist, he loved botany most of all. The son of a pastor, he believed he was chosen by God to resolve the jumbled classification of the natural world. Through his Systema Naturae, first published in 1735, he brought order to all recorded knowledge about living things, distinguishing and naming 7,700 plants and 4,400 animals in his lifetime.

This book gives a fascinating and rounded portrait of Linnaeus the man, charting his rise from a poor student at Lund University to Professor of Medicine at Uppsala and a founder of the Royal Academy of Sciences. Wilfrid Blunt's engaging text is interspersed with vivid passages from his subject's own writings--from riveting descriptions of adventures in the wilds of Lapland to a charming account of Sjupp the raccoon. Linnaeus's family life and his relations with pupils are explored alongside his epoch-making scientific achievements. William Stearn's appendix on Linnean classification provides a concise survey of the basics necessary for understanding Linnaeus's work.

Impeccably researched and highly readable, this biography is ideal for anyone interested in botany, zoology, or mineralogy, as well as naturalists and gardeners. It brings the world of Linnaeus alive with over 200 beautiful illustrations, including evocative photographs and exquisite eighteenth-century botanical drawings, paintings, and engravings.

                            4 out of 5 stars A charming life of a difficult man.......2003-02-20

This book reprints the text of Wilfred Blunt's 1971 biography, "The Compleat Naturalist: A Life of Linnaeus," adding lavish illustrations, a brief bibliography by Gavin Bridson, an explanation of Linnaeus's system of taxonomy by William T. Stearn, and a comment on modern biological systematics by C. J. Humphries. Carl Linnaeus was an egotistical, vain, and sometimes difficult man, but he was also a beloved teacher, and his impact on natural history is undeniable. Blunt is a charming writer, and he skilfully tells the story of Linnaeus's rise from obscure provincial to famous professor, drawing on Linnaeus's own writings and those of his contemporaries. The illustrations bring to life the places Linnaeus lived and traveled and the plants that he observed, described, and named. Blunt has less to say about Linnaeus's science; readers who want to know how Linnaeus's contemporaries reacted to his ideas and what effect they had on biology will have to turn to works by Lisbet Koerner and others. But if you've ever wondered who was responsible for modern scientific nomenclature, and what it was like traveling in Sweden and Europe in the eighteenth century, this book is a fine place to start.
