          Book Description

The chapters in volume 15 of ROCD address a wide array of topics, challenges, and gaps in our knowledge of organizational change. Purser, Bluedorn and Petranker explore the dynamics of time in organizational change, proposing the use of the concept of "flow time." Falkenberg and her colleagues examine the issue of excessive change in organizations, which they define as the simultaneous pursuit of multiple unrelated changes. Real and Poole develop a framework for classifying approaches to conceptualizing and measuring innovation implementation. Roth provides a case description of knowledge creation stemming from a team composed of university, business, and consulting organizations. Ferdig and Ludema examine change via self-organizing processes at the U.S. National Regulatory Commission, the government agency that monitors nuclear reactors. Wischnevsky and Damanpour explore the punctuated equilibrium model of organizational transformation in the banking industry. Golembiewski and his colleagues address the application of organization development across cultures, specifically the use of OD within those cultures where Confucian ideas are prominent. Coghlan and Coughlan report on the CO-IMPROVE project-an action research initiative funded by the European Union. Finally, Yeager, Sorensen and Bengtsson assess the current state of the use of appreciative inquiry in programs of organizational change.

            Book Description

For more than 150 years, the tales of hundreds of slaves and free people of color who used the judicial system to negotiate their freedom lay buried deep within the dusty records of the New Orleans district courts. Then Judith Kelleher Schafer spent fourteen years poring over Minute Books and trial transcripts, uncovering fascinating cases. In Becoming Free, Remaining Free, Schafer presents her findings and offers a profound analysis of slavery and manumission in the Crescent City.

Louisiana state law was unique in allowing slaves to contract for their freedom and to initiate a lawsuit for liberty. Schafer describes the ingenious and remarkably sophisticated ways slaves used the legal system to gain their independence and find a voice in a society that ordinarily gave them none. Showing that remaining free was often as challenging as becoming free, she also recounts numerous cases in which free people of color were forced to use the courts to prove their status. She further documents seventeen free blacks who, when faced with deportation, amazingly sued to enslave themselves.

Schafer's impressive detective work achieves a rare feat in the historical profession-the unveiling of an entirely new facet of the slave experience in the American South. With a rich bibliography sure to ease future research, Becoming Free, Remaining Free is a milestone in the historiography of slavery.

                      Book Description

Immune Mechanisms of Pain and Analgesia is the first volume to discuss a new concept of immune-neural interplays leading to pain or analgesia. It argues the classical view that pain and its control are restricted to the nervous system, offering a comprehensive overview of the emerging area of immune mechanisms in pain and its control. It challenges the traditional view that pain sensation or suppression is attributed exclusively to the nervous system and presents a critical analysis of this new concept. The book is written by an internationally recognized group of researchers and discusses complex and controversial issues such as cytokines and their pain-exacerbating but also analgesic effects, the production of opioids by immune cells, peripheral analgesic and anti-inflammatory actions of opioids, immunomodulatory effects of opiates, and immunosuppressive effects of pain.

4 out of 5 stars All about the journey.......2002-12-17

I gotta admit I liked it!
This book begins with the colorful story of how civilization came to be Indian style. The animated journey of not quite human humans as they travel through four worlds before settling down in the fith glittering world.
The books then proceeds to a journey in which the narrator starts at home on the reservation and rebeliously travels the country. From living on the streets to completing a MFA from Cornell, the narrator eventually completes the physical and metaphoric inner journey back home.
This book was not as mystic and symbolicially laden as its contemporary American Indian Literature, but it does not take away from the feelings one eventually shares with the narrator.
The creation story at the begining is an added treat!

5 out of 5 stars America and the World.......2007-05-15

As the world's first democracy with a written constitution and Bill of Rights, the United States has stood for global aspirations for democratic liberty, equality, and solidarity since its formation in 1776. However, as it developed into an empire by the late nineteenth century, the Unted States also has threatened the liberties of other peoples, including Native Americans, Hawaiian, Latin Americans, Asians, and Africans. The American role in world affairs has long been polarized around two conflicting images and strategies.

In the name of counter terrrorism, the Bush administration pursued a largely unilateralist policy in the Middle East and elsewhere. Yet, in the name of protecting its national sovereignty, the United Stated also has rejected most of the recent multilateral treaties that strive to contain violence by fortifying the rule of international law. A unilateralist strategy also goes largely against the U.S. postwar multilateralism, which established the Uited Nations and its specialized agencies. This volume explores these contradictions.

                                  Book Description

Exploring the interactions that swirl around scientific uncertainty and its coverage by the mass media, this volume breaks new ground by looking at these issues from three different perspectives: that of communication scholars who have studied uncertainty in a number of ways; that of science journalists who have covered these issues; and that of scientists who have been actively involved in researching uncertain science and talking to reporters about it. In particular, Communicating Uncertainty examines how well the mass media convey to the public the complexities, ambiguities, and controversies that are part of scientific uncertainty.

In addition to its new approach to scientific uncertainty and mass media interactions, this book distinguishes itself in the quality of work it assembles by some of the best known science communication scholars in the world. This volume continues the exploration of interactions between scientists and journalists that the three coeditors first documented in their highly successful volume, Scientists and Journalists: Reporting Science as News, which was used for many years as a text in science journalism courses around the world.
