A MUST read!.......2006-08-10
As a "headhunter" of 15 years, I have been a consultant to companies who are trying to attract top talent to their organizations. I have also worked with top-notch candidates who are searching to associate themselves with companies who are the best in their fields. What I have found is, that, which most excites quality, talented, qualified individuals to a new employer, is the company's leadership, their purpose, their culture and their core values. After reading "There Is No Place Like Work", I concluded that this easy-to-read, easy-to-understand, easy-to-follow and easy-to-implement guide is a "must read" for every business owner, CEO, executive, manager and human resources professional. Do you want to change careers? Do you want to start a business venture? Do you want to be crystal clear as to the direction you want to go with your business? Then might I suggest you read this book. While it is a metaphor to the wizard of oz, it is written beautifully so as to make you decide where you want to go with your business.
The information was just enough to get the wheels turning as to what is important and more importantly why?
I spent the day pondering the message in the book and created a business model that I am looking forward to implement tomorrow.

Tools for an organizational "tune up"!.......2006-07-15
There Is No Place Like Work...is an excellent tool for an organizational tune-up! My company's vision and mission are current and consistent, we are not looking to start over. But we have many entry level positions and a limited career ladder so we are constantly bringing new people into the organization. Using the tools that are provided in the book helped us to sharpen our presentations (tell our story)better, internally and to outside audiences. Additionally, we use the principals in our strategic leadership team as part of our planning process. This book is a winner!

Decent Primer for Beginners.......2004-01-12
This is an excellent introduction to analyzing financial statements, at least for those who have never done so before or who have no background in business. It even is of benefit to seasoned financial people who don't necessarily spend a lot of time reviewing financial statements.
It covers quite a bit of information in a relatively small number of pages: taxation, inventories, cash flow, depreciation, capital investments, and even intangibles like Research and Development and market position. It is well organized and presented in plain Englsih, much to its credit.
However, keep in mind that this is more of a starting point. If you plan on spending a lot of time doing indepth analysis of financial statements, I would recommend starting with this book to provide the basics and then moving on to a more technical and detailed volume. You might want to pick an accounting and/or finance course along the way, too.

I bought this guide to financial statements, and I was impressed on how much was covered in such a short book. However, much is vague and misleading to the reader. I would recommend questioning why all the reviewers that rank this book so well are from PA. Those reviews are undoubtably from people representing the authors. You may want to look elsewhere for more thourough input on financial analysis.

This is a good book if you do not know anything about financial statements analysis. However, since it belongs to the "Pocket MBA series", one would expect more advanced content.

An Accurate and Interesting Account of Life in Fitzgerald.......2003-03-02
I grew up in Fitzgerald about 10 years later than the author, but it was uncanny how similar his boyhood experiences were to mine. We frequented many of the same places and did many of the same things. His account of farm life in the 30's, 40's and 50's was also accurate insofar as I experienced it as a town boy. He even had an anecdote about my father "Doc" Reeves, which was flawless as it described him and his ability to "smell" bream beds. Mr. Hopkins was not only a master's graduate and a farmer, but he became skilled as a naturalist, and even discovered a new species of fish, which was named after him. All in all, I found this book interesting, and believe any male who grew up in Fitzgerald would also.

I was disappointed! The foul language and general meaness I found depressing. I had expected much better from the author. Jimmy Carter's "AN HOUR BEFORE DAYLIGHT," has a much brighter view of American farm life from the Depression to the present.
People & World of Fitzgerald, GA.......2003-02-07
I'm prejudiced, since (1) I grew up in Fitzgerald, the focus of the book, and (2) Hopkins tells well of my teenaged brother's death. But I think this book is a very fine account of a very interesting and unusual life, with rich human, commercial, and natural connections, in the "one place" of Fitzgerald, in central south Georgia. Hopkins is a life-long naturalist who has published much in ornithology; this book shows his broader life-long study of people and farming (and nature) in the land he knows so well.
An Authentic Storyteller........2002-07-24
Mr. Hopkins is a natural storyteller. His unpretentious, easy-going literary style and his obvious affection for storytelling make his stories accessible, intimate, and fun. If Mr. Hopkins would produce a steady stream of similar stories, he would find an eager and happy audience.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Panting is the name given to out-of plane movement and formation of secondary bending stresses which are produced when a deformed panel is subjected to in-plane edge loads. The role of panting, particularly as it applies to fatigue, is essentially unquantified. There have been reported incidences where fuel/ballast tank tops have cracked as a result of sloshing and pressure fluctuation between adjoining tanks. However, recent interest in advanced unidirectional double hull concepts for both naval and commercial ships has generated interest in the effects of panting on the fatigue strength of these types of ships. The intent of this investigation is to quantify the additional fatigue damage and associated reduction in fatigue life of a plate panel, which can be attributed to panting. These fatigue analyses considered the interaction of axial load and lateral pressure and established a fatigue analysis procedure where none had previously existed. These results help to identify acceptable aspect and slenderness ratios of plate panels, as well as ratios which should be avoided.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Surface combatants face a wide range of threats and perhaps the most destructive of these is the underwater explosion generated by a mine or a torpedo. The shock wave generated by an underwater explosion can cause severe damage or even a catastrophic failure. As the shock wave bits the ship, its energy is transmitted through the structural members of the ship. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how this energy is transmitted through the watertight bulkhead of a DDG and how the welded stiffeners affect the bulkhead's energy damping properties. To investigate the effects of the welding, the bulkhead was modeled both as a finite element model and as a scaled physical model. The modes and natural frequencies of the bulkhead were first calculated using PATRAN and NASTRAN. Using a one half scale model, the bulkhead was excited using random noise over a 250 Hz frequency span while measuring the accelerations at 60 points along the panel. These measured accelerations were then used to calculate the frequency response of the bulkhead and the damping ratios as a function of frequency. By plotting the damping ratios versus frequency for each measurement point on the bulkhead, there can be a better understanding of how energy waves propagate through a welded structure.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This study provides methodologies for defining failure for reliability-based, marine structural design and analysis. Structural reliability methods allow the prediction of an occurrence likelihood for a particular event of interest (for example, structural failure), allowing the designer to limit the probability of undesirable events. Changes to the traditional serviceability failure definitions are not possible without addressing the costs associated with the failures, either subjectively or objectively. A framework is provided by which this may be accomplished in the future. This study begins with a review and description of structural reliability methodologies as they have been applied to ship structure. Uncertainty types are then explored for information and tools used in a reliability prediction. Types of failure modes are described as reported in literature. These types are then expanded upon to establish classes of failure modes, leading to a methodology for formulating the range of failure definitions. Failure definition examples are provided for the hull girder and structural components at both the ultimate and serviceability types of failure. Finally, recommendations are made to provide guidance on applications and future research in this topic area.

This book is the second of three volumes in which the recent knowledge of the extent and chronology of Quaternary glaciations has been compiled on a global scale. This information is seen as a fundamental requirement, not only for the glacial community, but for the wider user-community of general Quaternary workers. In particular the need for accurate ice-front positions is a basic requirement for the rapidly growing field of palaeoclimate modelling. In order to provide the information for the widest-possible range of users in the most accessible form, a series of digital maps was prepared.
The glacial limits were mapped in ArcView, the Geographical Information System (GIS) used by the work group. Included with the publication is a CD with digital maps, showing glacial limits, end moraines, ice-dammed lakes, glacier-induced drainage diversions and the locations of key sections through which the glacial limits are defined and dated. The last deglaciation is also shown in 500 year time-steps. The digital maps in this volume cover the USA and Canada and include Greenland and Hawaii. Both overview maps and more detailed maps at a scale 1: 1,000,000 are provided.
