Tripod's Tools for Life: Streetsmart Strategies for Work, Life-And Everything Else
Manufacturer: Hyperion Books (Adult Trd Pap) ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0786883324 |
Amazon.com
This is not just the work of the Tripod editors and writers--hundreds of Tripod online community members have contributed to the book, adding their anecdotes and expertise on every topic covered. The editors have grouped everything into six main categories: the Net, work, home, food, health, and money. The tone is hip and generally light-hearted, but there's a wealth of good common sense buried in each article.Along with the articles comes a variety of recommended resources, both online and offline, where further information can be found. What makes the book especially worthwhile, however, is the commentary by Tripod members. These snippets appear in the book's wide margins. Some are profound, some are silly, many are helpful, and all help provide insight into the ways life's opportunities and challenges can be viewed. --Elizabeth Lewis

Disappointing.......1998-12-01
I was hoping for more "how to move into the real world" after college type information. Too much about getting a job - there's enough other books out there devoted solely to that. I wanted something different.
Maybe my expectations were too high. I'm just going to stick to the Tripod site, though.
More that a surfing lesson. It's an Endless Summer........1998-10-04

Climate Change in Contrasting River Basins: Adaptation Strategies for Water, Food and Environment (Cabi Publishing)
Manufacturer: CABI ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0851998356 |
Book Description
Dealing with climate change is generally considered to be one of the greatest challenges for the coming decades. Changes in precipitation are likely to have a major impact on the hydrological cycle and susequently on the enivironment and food production. However, until now, clear guidance on how to respond to this challenge, particularly at the river basin level, has been lacking. This book has been developed from the ADAPT project, focusing on the development of fregional adaptation strategies for water, food, and the environment in river basins across the world. A generic methodology is presented and applied to seven case studies in contrasting geographical areas of the world: Mekong (SE Asia), Rhine (Western Europe), Sacramento (USA), Syr Darya (Central Asia), Volta (Ghana), Walawe (Sri Lanka) and Zayandeh (Iran). The book provides a unique contribution and will interest researchers in climatology, geography, ecology, crop and soil science, environmental studies, and related disciplines.

Membranes and Circadian Rhythms
Manufacturer: Springer-Verlag Telos ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 3540601015 |
Book Description
The book shows that cell membranes vary according to the 24h cycle: it deals with circadian changes in membrane composition, principally the plasma membrane and with structural organization changes in some chloroplast thylakoids. The book deals with changes in activity or efficiency of pumps, channels, photo- and hormone receptors, in sensitivity towards external signals, in sensitivity to some drugs, including anaesthetics and in changes in signal transduction. The cell cycle is discussed on theoretical and experimental grounds, as well as its gating by circadian rhythmicity. The rhythm generating mechanism is modelized. The circadian oscillation of the plasma membrane confers a temporal parameter.

Book Description
Atmospheric and climatological studies are becoming more and more important in day-to-day living. Winds and ocean current owe their existence to the thermodynamic imbalances that arise from the differential heating of the Earth and air by the sun. Accounting for heat exchanges with the atmosphere and ocean is essential in any predictive model of the ocean and/or atmosphere. Thermodynamic feedback processes in the atmosphere and ocean are critical to understanding the overall stability of the Earth's climate and climate change. Water and its phase changes make the thermodynamics of the atmosphere and ocean uniquely interesting and challenging.

Microstructure of Martensite: Why It Forms and How It Gives Rise to the Shape-Memory Effect (Oxford Series on Materials Modelling, 2)
Kaushik Bhattacharya Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0198509340 |
Book Description
Martensites are crystalline solids that display dazzling patterns at the microscopic scales. This microstructure gives rise to unusual macroscopic properties like the shape-memory effect. Starting with the crystalline structure, this book describes a theoretical framework for studying martensites and uses the theory to explain why these materials form microstructure. The macroscopic consequences of the microstructure are subsequently discussed. Complete with a piece of shape-memory wire and numerous examples from real materials, this book represents a successful case study in multiscale modelling, giving a clear understanding of the link between microstructure and macroscopic properties. Beautifully written, in a most clear and pedagogical manner, it holds appeal for a broad audience. On the one hand, it introduces modern modelling techniques to those trained in materials science, mechanics and physics, and shows how these techniques can be used in real-world problems. On the other hand, it introduces physical phenomena to those trained in mathematics, and demonstrates how such phenomena give rise to interesting mathematical problems.Customer Reviews:

John Dee: Interdisciplinary Studies in English Renaissance Thought (International Archives of the History of Ideas / Archives internationales d'histoire des idées)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402042450 |
Book Description
The career of the sixteenth-century English mathematician and natural philosopher John Dee (1527-1609) has played a significant role in recent historiographical debates about the relationship between magic and science in the early modern period. This collection of interdisciplinary essays, which addresses a wide range of Dee's diverse intellectual activities (including mathematics, astronomy, navigation, astrology, alchemy, cabala and "angel magic") seeks to enlarge the scope of this debate, as well as presenting new archival and bibliographical discoveries relating to Dee and his collaborators and colleagues. The essays in the volume present new views on the nature of Dee's various projects, as well as the uses to which he put the books and manuscripts in his library at Mortlake (one of the largest private collections in Elizabethan England).Books:
