Book Description
Comet and Asteroid Impact Hazards explores the anticipated consequences of comet and asteroid impact. It presents the first computer simulations of the hazards of comet and asteroid bombardment of a populated Earth. Previous estimates of fatality and damage rates on the 100 to 10,000 year time scale are shown to be too low because they neglect rare, highly lethal outriders of the populations of bombarding objects, those with exceptional strength, unusually low entry velocity, and near-horizontal entry angles. This is the first realistic assessment of both the mean casualty rate and the expected statistical fluctuations in that rate. A breakdown of fatality and damage rates by impactor energy and compositional class suggests lessons for both asteroid search strategies and interdiction techniques.
This book is written so that anyone with college level experience in the physical sciences can understand it. It includes a disk that allows the reader to simulate impact catastrophes. It serves as a useful resource in various physical sciences courses such as astronomy, planetary science, and environmental science.
* Quantatively rigorous treatment of the state of impact hazard prediction, including stuctural blast damage, firestorm ignition, tsunami generation
* Realistic treatment of the impact on population, composition, and orbits
* Attention to economic and public policy issues of warning, interdiction, and asteroid and comet search strategies
* Comparison of simulation results to historical records
* Detailed and realistic Monte Carlo simulation software included
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book but the Software presents a Hassle.......2000-11-21
The text is an excellent and scholarly treatment of the subject. Itis very detailed, quite factual, thoughtfully constructed and verythought provocating. It generates a lot of interest in the includedMonte Carlo impact/fatality model.
Unfortunately, the attached model program is very difficult to use. It is written in native GW-BASIC which can only be read by GW-Basic running under DOS (not a Windows shell). One needs to find a copy of GWBASIC and a DOS boot disk to convert HAZARD5.BAS to ASCII format. Once in ASCII it will run in the more common QBASIC in Windows. In short, it presents an unnecessary hassle. Indeed, there were no instructions to do the conversion and Michael Paine and his web site .... came to the rescue with detailed instructions and some refinements to the model.
Wow!.......2000-09-14
Dr. Lewis makes a compelling case for the reappraisal of comet and asteroid impacts. This book is lucid, sharp, and, well, SCARY. I strongly recommend it to all readers curious about these potentially cataclysmic events; when you understand the energy involved in one of these impacts, and the effects on human populations it becomes clear that we are currently just as vulnerable as the dinosaurs were 65 million years ago. I also recommend Rain of Iron and Ice for the popular science audience. It is an equally compelling, and also entertaining, read. Worth every penny.
Devastating impact!.......2000-01-05
Of all the hazards facing Earth, impacts are the most dangerous. Their effects can be devastating over the entire surface of the planet.
I enjoyed the comparison of simulation results to historical records and the attention to economic and public policy issues of warning, interdiction, and asteroid & comet search strategies. David Egge's paintings (in the color section) are awesome.
Keep your eye on the sky!
Simulate asteroid and comet impacts on your PC.......1999-12-07
This book by Planetary Scientist John Lewis includes a diskette with a Monte Carlo program to run simulations of Earth impacts over time. The book is basically a handbook for the software with a wide range of physical information about NEOs, impacts and effects on the human population. An excellent resource covering physics, chemistry and environment. I can recommend it to anyone studying the possible influence of impacts on civilisation. Over thousands of years airburst events like Tunguska turn out to be important sources of fatalities and yet they leave little or no physical evidence so information about the danger is unlikely to be reliably passed from generation to generation.
Note that the program requires GW-BASIC to run To run the program in a higher version of BASIC such as Quick Basic you will need to convert it from binary to ASCII format from within GW-BASIC. To do this load the program in GW-BASIC (F3 path/filename.BAS) then save it with the ASCII option set (F4 path/new_filename.BAS , A ). This is all subject to the copyright conditions of course.
Book Description
Systems as diverse as clocks, singing crickets, cardiac pacemakers, firing neurons and applauding audiences exhibit a tendency to operate in synchrony. These phenomena are universal and can be understood within a common framework based on modern nonlinear dynamics. The first half of this book describes synchronization without formulae, and is based on qualitative intuitive ideas. The main effects are illustrated with experimental examples and figures, and the historical development is also outlined. The second half of the book presents the main effects of synchronization in a rigorous and systematic manner, describing both classical results on synchronization of periodic oscillators, and recent developments in chaotic systems, large ensembles, and oscillatory media.

First recognized in 1665 by Christiaan Huygens, synchronization phenomena are abundant in science, nature, engineering and social life. The main effects are illustrated with experimental examples and figures, and the historical development is outlined. The remainder of the book presents the main effects of synchronization in a rigorous and systematic manner, describing classical results on synchronization of periodic oscillators, and recent developments in chaotic systems, large ensembles, and oscillatory media. This comprehensive book will be of interest to a broad audience, from graduate students to specialist researchers in physics, applied mathematics, engineering and natural sciences.
Book Description
Zimbabwe has fine black writers and Shimmer Chinodya is one of the best. Harvest of Thorns brilliantly pictures the transition between the old white dominated Southern Rhodesia, through the Bush War, to the new black regime. It is a brave book, a good strong story, and it is often very funny. People who know the country will salute its honesty, but I hope newcomers to African writing will give this book a try. They won't be disappointed.
- Doris Lessing
A time of turbulence and turmoil is illustrated through the coming of age of Benjamin Tichafa, a young man torn between two worlds, between two sets of beliefs, between old and new.

Well-told Tale of the Bush War.......2005-07-26
Divided into four parts, this prize-winning novel provides a glimpse of the guerrilla war fought against the apartheid rule of Ian Smith following Rhodesia's split from Britain in 1965. It's not very clear why the book is broken into four parts, or why they fall out of chronological sequence (indeed, I am inclined to suggest reading them in the following order: Part 2, 3, 1, 4). Chronologically, the story starts with a young rural girl in the 1950s who is ardently wooed by a polite and dapper young man who serves tea at a colonial district office. The seventy pages of Part 2 tells of their marriage, move to township housing, religious conversion, and raising of three children. By the end of this section, it is the mid-'70s and their teenage son Benjamin is chaffing at their strict rules, and along with everyone else his age, protesting against the oppressive racist government. Here, the author is clearly drawing upon his own experiences, as some of Benjamin's encounters mirror that of the author. The details of township life and daily life under white rule, are all well-handled and quite interesting.
Part 2 is the longest (130 pages) and details Benjamin's flight to join rebels hiding out in the border countryside, training, and several years of soldiering with a small squad in the bush. The physical and moral hardships of the guerilla life are given vivid detail here, as Benjamin's squad spends a great deal of time waiting around, with brief bursts of activity, including political education of villagers, ambushes of army troops, fleeting encounters with women, and brutal retribution against informers. In a sense, the events and mood are no different from portrayals of any other bloody guerilla war of liberation, but it's well done and well worth reading by anyone with an interest in Zimbabwe's Bush War.
Parts 1 and 4 take place after the war has been won, as Benjamin returns home after several years away. Although he's now a citizen of a free Zimbabwe, he finds that has little practical meaning, as he can't find a job, and has to fight all kinds of administrative red tape concerning his service in the liberation forces. He a freedom fighting hero who not only never gets a hero's welcome or laurels, but also now must live with the things he's seen and done. Further compounding the tragedy is the depressing reality of what has befallen the country since independence under the corrupt Mugabe regime. After strong-arming his way into power, he and his cronies have been lining their own pockets for years while abstaining from any true effort to rebuild their country--disgracing the sacrifices of people like Benjamin.
A rebirth of a nation and self during Zimbabwe's independenc.......1999-07-28
One of the greatest struggles anyone goes through, is simply to figure out who they are. There is nothing simple about this process, weighing past experience, where you come from, and your family. Shimmer Chinodya identifies the growth of oneself in a more hostile environment, the liberation wars of Zimbabwe in the late 1970's. The main character Benjamin revolts against his families' norms, of living a content quiet life, collobrating with the oppresive system of Rhodesian Apartheid. Benjamin looks to find himself, leaves his school and joins the Zimbabwean liberation armies. The book serves as Benjamins recollection of his identity, his experience in the bush fighting, his personal relationship developed during the struggle, the family he has abandoned, and the oppression he fights. Wrapped into Benjamin's identity is the story of his parents, moving to Harare, their hardships with their new life, their adoption of Christianity, their worries over their son. Benjamin survives to see a free Zimbabwe, but now finds his world and identity unresolved. He is a husband, a father, a soldier, a philospher, and a forgotten hero. Benjamin returns home to juggle his new life and forge a better future for his infant country. Harvest of Thorns story is not only endearing, but accurate and informative. This story fits well into the historical context of the plot, accurately describing the struggle of Zimbabwe's independence, colonialism in Zimbabwe, and the forgotten hero's of the independence movement. The reader must dig deep into their own experience to find themselves at the end of the novel and wonder who or what has made them the person they are today. For this credit, it is clear Shimmer Chinodya's self-reflection into his native country have created a magnificent story.

Book Description
A little more than a hundred years ago, the San Francisco landscape was mostly sand dunes, meadows, marshes, and rocky outcroppings. Only a scattering of native trees, mostly windblown and stunted, grew naturally. Early city and park planners, bent on creating a magnificent city, transformed this sparse, fog-swept landscape by planting trees from around the worldtrees selected especially for their beauty and adaptability to the city's climate.
_The Trees of Golden Gate Park_ is based on the writings of botanist Elizabeth McClintock, whose column on the trees of Golden Gate Park was a feature of Pacific Horticulture magazine for twenty-five years; it presents the reader with the stories of 170 different trees found in the park and throughout the city. Detailed maps and elegant line drawings of leaves, flowers, and fruit make it a useful field guide; extensive descriptions of the biology, lineage, and horticultural history of the trees make it essential armchair reading for everyone who wishes to deepen their knowledge of San Francisco and the unique urban treasure known as Golden Gate Park.
Customer Reviews:
If you are near Golden Gate Park.......2007-08-09
Golden Gate Park, partly due to its frost-free situation, has plants not generally found elsewhere in northern California. This book is an excellent guide. All the species are illustrated (although a few of the line drawings are a bit too stylized for my taste), thoroughly described, and locations of specimens in the park are also given. For anyone interested in plants and who visits the Park, I highly recommend it.
Walking in San Francisco.......2007-01-10
Great book. The maps are great, and if you love trees in SF this is the book to help you explore and enjoy Golden Gate Park.

The stories of almost two hundred different trees.......2001-09-11
Trees Of Golden Gate Park And San Francisco is a 'must' bible of detail for any San Francisco resident or enthusiast who wants to know more about the city's urban forest and landscape. Chapters are packed with details ranging from early San Francisco landscape history to the evolution of its parks. The presentation is based on the writings of botanist Elizabeth McClintock, and presents the stories of almost two hundred different trees located in Golden Gate Park. No color photos, but the depth of text and detail doesn't need them; the b/w line drawings are enough.
Makes me happy I live here..........2001-08-23
...that there should be people in my community as to write such a book. Starting with the park's planning phases (did you know that Mr. Central Park himself, Frederick Law Olmstead, recommended putting the park along what is now the Van Ness corridor!), the book quickly progresses to encyclopedic coverage of the trees of the park... Sections from this book are destined to become long and enjoyable walks for us in the near future! Unlike many field guides, very fitting for pleasure reading.
Book Description
Predrag Matvejevic's writing glints and eddies as if subject to the same winds and currents that stir his Mediterranean. "Crickets often crop up in accounts of Mediterranean moods," we read. "The sound or possibly song of the cricket does not disturb insomnia--I know from experience--on summer nights when waking is easier than sleeping and the spirits keep watch and almost seem to merge over the Mediterranean." In the space of a few pages we encounter knots, ballast, voyages, swimming, diving, shipwrecks, burial at sea, sponge and coral gathering, rivers, and the distribution of olive, fig, and agave. The author has stories to tell about each topic and freely mingles the observations and discoveries of fellow travelers, ancient and contemporary, with his own, creating a powerful narrative tide.
The book is divided into three sections: "Breviary," "Maps," and "Glossary." "Breviary" catalogs the sights, smells, sounds, and features common to the many peoples who share the Mediterranean--Jews, Arabs, Copts, Berbers, Turks, Syrians, Greeks, Romans (and Italians), Spaniards (and Catalonians), the French, Dalmatians, Albanians, Bulgarians, Romanians, even Russians. "Maps" retraces the same itinerary through documents up to the seventeenth century that represent the Mediterranean; "Glossary" deals with linguistic diversity and history. The brilliant variety of details and the verve with which they are conveyed will appeal to active and armchair travelers alike.
With this portrait of a place and its civilizations, Matvejevic joins a cohort of writers that includes Claudio Magris (Danube), Angelo Maria Ripellino (Magic Prague), and Neal Ascherson (Black Sea)--authors who have created a literary genre all their own, at once personal and objective, imaginative and erudite. Although, as Matvejevic says, "we do not discover the sea ourselves, nor do we view it exclusively through our own eyes," this Mediterranean is joyously his, and it becomes ours as well.
Customer Reviews:
Mediterranean: A Cultural Landscape.......2007-05-12
Yeah...what those other guys said. I thought it was a great book. Don't forget your dictionary.
Poetry on the shores of the dark-wine sea.......2005-01-08
For a few years "Mediterranean. A Cultural Landscape" has been one of the most popular book here in Europe. One of the most cited and the most praised.
There are wonderful travel related books about the Mediterranean.
Besides the many famous, I remember with gratitude the excellent "Mediterranean. Portrait of a Sea" by Ernle Bradford, possibly the best book ever written on this argument - and the most evocative, true poetry in prose, "On a Voiceless Shore - Byron in Greece" by Stephen Minta with the priceless metaphor that begins: "There is a frontier in Europe, marked on few maps.... It runs eastward from Galicia in northwester Spain, turns south ..., ...takes a fringe in coastal France...then runs down the coast of old Yugoslavia into Albania and Greece. This is that marks the northern limits of the olive tree..."
What about this book?
Did I enjoy the work of Matvejevic? Well... actually I'm still asking myself the question.
And the answer is not easy.
I'd probably re-read with pleasure, yes, and I would recommend it to friends, yes.
Undeniably this is a book that stimulates imagination and has the ability to evoke, but...
But the "dish" is sometimes a bit too elaborate, descriptions most of the time a bit too synthetic to enjoy at leisure and also exposition is - possibly willingly (in the style of ancient Latin "saturae") - haphazard.
Like with an elaborate dish by nouvelle cuisine, here everything looks, smells and tastes good... you are captured by endless variations of colors and forms, but in the end you feel frustrated by scarcity and with a distressing sense of hunger.
Its main virtue consists in being a successful effort to evoke a world almost totally disappeared, stressing on the points of contact between the many peoples and cultures living on its shores (the Latin, Slav, Greek, Turkish, Jewish and Arabic) more than on the already over-stressed differences.
On the other hand, if you do not know already the background, it will be difficult to follow, perceive and appreciate the argument. Because most of the book is rotating on a endless variation of the same themes, presented under different points of view, and often in a most rarefied poetic dimension.
This happens specially in the first of the three parts in which the book is divided ("Breviary" - the other two are "Maps" and "Glossary") while in the other two this impression is less vivid.
Anyway most of the world here presented as still existing, was already totally vanished by the 1960s' and since then it has been transferred to the realm of mythical utopia, that blunders edges and fades true colors. But, of course, the evocative and poetic dimension is overwhelming.
What Matvejevic seems to ignore completely is the presence on its shores of the British (since at least 1704), as well as the fascination that our sea commanded since the XVIII century on German and Northern People (Goethe, Winkelmann, Byron, the British enclave in Florence... but what to say of the Russians in the Cote d'Azure?), a distinct aesthetic sensibility that greatly contributed to shape the poetic and sentimental image of our sea. And what about the chaotic multicultural cities of early XX century: Forster's and Kavafis' Alexandria, just to name one (but also Salonika, Istambul, Triest,...)?
This is possibly the greatest "sin" of this lay breviary.
Mediterranean: A Cultural Landscape.......2000-01-10
The book Mediterranean: A Cultural Landscape represents global, objective and unburdened approach to topics of our civilizaton's cradle. Namely the author managed to write about so complex and multiculturaly entwined subjects on a certain way that is acceptable to and appreciated by all mediterranean nations and religions and by all who are interested in overall hystorical and cultural development of this part of the world . The Matvejevic story about Mediterranean is far from being scientificaly cold and dull, as he is intertwining in it a lot of his own observations, which are witty, sparkling and deep at the same time. In the same sense his approach isn't sticking to cronological or geographical order, but wise comparing of different eras, cultures, civilizations, nations and religions of this "sea, surrounded by land". It is the book that unites. The medieval form of breviary, that the writer is using, is giving the treated topics some special nobleness that is emphasized by poetical language which is fluctuating like the Mediterranean sea.

Book Description
This book is the result of two interdisciplinary symposia held by a group of volcanologists, engineers, Near Eastern and Classical philologists, and Old and New World archaeologists, in Naples, Italy and Medford, Massachusetts. Contributors to the nineteen chapters examine the complex problems that can arise in volcanic environments and the various ways in which societies respond. These studies cross barriers among the volcanological, geological, antiquarian, and archaeological perspectives in studying such topics as risk assessment, responses in prehistoric and historic times, and representations in ancient literature.

Book Description
Mediterranean islands exhibit many similarities in their biotic ecological, physical and environmental characteristics. There are also many differences in terms of their human colonization and current anthropogenic pressures. This book addresses in three sections these characteristics and examines the major environmental changes that the islands experienced during the Quaternary period. The first section provides details on natural and cultural factors which have shaped island landscapes. It describes the environmental and cultural changes of the Holocene and their effects on biota, as well as on the current human pressures that are now threats to the sustainability of the island communities. The second section focuses on the landscapes of the largest islands namely Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Cyprus, Crete, Malta and the Balearics. Each island chapter includes a special topic reflecting a particular characteristic of the island. Part three presents strategies for action towards sustainability in Mediterranean islands and concludes with a comparison between the largest islands.
Despite several published books on Mediterranean ecosystems/landscapes there is no existing book dealing with Mediterranean islands in a collective manner. Students, researchers and university lecturers in environmental science, geography, biology and ecology will find this work invaluable as a cross-disciplinary text while planners and politicians will welcome the succinct summaries as background material to planning decisions.

Book Description
Specifically designed for high school students taking introductory and college-prep biology courses. Topics covered include life processes; principles of ecology; cell structure and function; genetics; a complete overview of the protista, fungi, plant, and animal kingdoms; and an in-depth section on human anatomy. Customer Reviews:
Helpful, but some careless typos.......2003-07-16
This book is of chapters on topics in high school biology. The chapters consist of a series of questions and answers. It is an interesting format, but is not sufficient to learn the topics. Think of this as a supplement to regular study or as a refresher course and you will be closer to the mark.
The images included in the book are useful, but in this day and age I would have expected at least some use of color. Color can aid understanding when used well. However, too often it is distracting because it is used for glitz. I am arguing to a judicious use to clarify the points addressed.
The one thing that disturbs me is the careless typos I have found (so how many have I NOT found?). For example: on page 2 the give the exponential notation for microns in millimeters and meters. Then they give Ångstroms in microns millimeters and meters. However, they exponents for the meters are switched (backwards) between microns and Ångstroms.
Then on page 11 the first give the formula for acetic acid as CH3COO, but then as CH3COOH (which is correct).
These might confuse a student trying to get some background in the subject.
I wrote the company for this book and asked for the errata sheet and they told me that they were unaware of errors, but would check into them and get back with me. The assured me they want to provide an accurate and dependable guide. I believe them. But right now, this one has a couple of issues that readers need to be aware of.
There is still a lot to be gained from working with this book. Just realize what it is and what its limitations are and you will be fine.
