Advanced info for those wishing to model the Stock Market.......2000-04-03

This book contains 33 articles some of which discuss using Neural Network models to predict the direction of the Stock Market on a short term basis (see table of contents on hardcover version). For those of you who are targeting long term results exclusively, you may want to look elsewhere. What I liked about the book, is that the articles are very specific, and they follow the format of A. Here is my idea for a model, B. This is how I tested it, and C. Here are my results, with plots. Some of the book is easy reading while other articles are more difficult and require some knowledge of calculus and probability. Most of the articles assume some knowedge of statistics. The writers and editors are well known in their field. Some are professors from business schools, others are from investment comapanies, and some are have an engineering or physics background. No lightweights from what I can tell.

If you are serious about modeling the market using your computer (and making money on your investments) then this book may help you do that. It is a serious book for academically oriented individuals. It has none of the fluff usually contained in consumer targeted books (aka - get rich tomorrow with my new stock picking plan...). One thing I didn't like about it is the smaller print on some of the articles, but this was not a big factor in my decision to buy it. When I saw this book it only took me a few minutes to decide that I was not leaving the store without it.

One of the best !!!.......1997-05-02

This book take you to a nice and different approach to how neural networks build their solutions for time series problems. There is a nice good explanation about applying this tool for real problems in financial world. IMHO, this is one of the bibles of neural networks in this days.

Description:
Evidence exists that emerging market stock returns are influenced by a different set of factors than those that influence the returns for stocks traded in developed countries. This study uses artificial neural networks to predict stock price movement (i.e., price returns) for firms traded on the Shanghai stock exchange. We compare the predictive power using linear models from financial forecasting literature to the predictive power of the univariate and multivariate neural network models. Our results show that neural networks outperform the linear models compared. These results are statistically significant across our sample firms, and indicate neural networks are a useful tool for stock price prediction in emerging markets, like China.

Becoming Scientifically Literate in Today's World.......2006-03-20

I am reading the book in conjunction with The Teaching Company's "The Joy of Science," which is presented by the Professor Hazen. The purpose of both is give you a background in the sciences-Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Biology-to make you scientifically literate for today's technical world. This sounds impossible because of the scope of the task. However through clear writing, examples found in the everyday world and excllent illustrations they achieve their goal.

The book is geared for a nontechnical person. It is not designed to prepare someone to be a scientist or engineer. Thus the authors keep the mathematics to a minimum. The book is very readable. As a result of the book I now understand the basics of relativity and genetics. Both are areas I had trouble before.

Got here kind of slow but the sender apologized in advance. Could be in better shape but you cant expect perfection now can you?

Good intentions with conceptual problems.......2004-09-14

The book covers a lot of subjects with the intention of providing a basic aproach to science. There are, however, conceptual mistakes or lack of precise characterization of important concepts. For instance, it confuses heat with internal energy ( not heat as energy in transit). Also it does not defines mass adequatetly as a measure of inertia, which may cause confusion when one studies relativity. These were problems detected at first sight. The book needs a revision. I suggest to by, through Amazon, "Integrated Science", by Tillery, Enger and Roos, from Mc Graw Hill, to get a general view of fundamental science with a more clear, and rigorous definition of terms.

Great for non-Science major.......2000-02-20

As a business major, satisfying a Science requirement, I have found this book to be informative, interesting and great fun. I believe it to be will written and thorough. Information is wonderfully balanced by illustrations, fyi's and interesting supplemental facts. I have one significant complaint to register with the authors/publishers of this text. The review and discussion questions should be answered either at the end of the book or in the review book. It is extremely disappointing that these answers are not available. As a student with a 3.86 average, I take my education very seriously and find it discouraging and somewhat insulting that I can not check my own work. I would STRONGLY suggest that those answers are made available within the text or on web. Thanks!

Defects in ion-implanted semiconductors are important and will likely gain increased importance in the future as annealing temperatures are reduced with successive IC generations. Novel implant approaches, such as MdV implantation, create new types of defects whose origin and annealing characteristics will need to be addressed. Publications in this field mainly focus on the effects of ion implantation on the material and the modification in the implanted layer afterhigh temperature annealing.
Electrical and Physicochemical Characterization focuses on the physics of the annealing kinetics of the damaged layer. An overview of characterization tehniques and a critical comparison of the information on annealing kinetics is also presented.

Mortimer's best non-Rumpole book.......2000-06-20

I'm biased: I think John Mortimer's Rumpole stories are so perfectly written that I've never thought his longer works quite measure up. This one comes the closest; in Paradise Postponed, Mortimer follows a disparate group of characters from the Second World War up through the late 1960s, using their stories to reflect developments in England during the same period. As you might expect from the creator of Rumpole, there's also an interesting mystery, but the real focus is on the relationships and dynamics between the characters, as Mortimer centers on a young man from a working class background who eventually becomes a powerful politician. Mortimer has an uncanny knack for creating characters who are believable, quirky individuals, and he makes us care about their struggles. The dialogue crackles, which one might expect since Mortimer was writing the TV adaptation of Paradise Postponed at the same time he was writing the novel. Paradise Postponed has had two sequels, which don't have quite the same scope either in terms of character development or time period covered.

What surprises me is that the TV adaptation of Paradise Postponed has never been released on video, at least in the U.S. There'd be a large market for it.
