Book Description

Just after a promising job interview and before the job offer, many of today’s applicants are marched through an unassuming ritual called “the business lunch” so prospective employers can determine whether or not candidates have “the right stuff.” And while it may look innocent enough, this one meal often “makes or breaks” the applicant’s future with the interviewing corporation.

Most college career counselors and many business schools prepare new grads for the job search with good baseline education and technical information, interview techniques, resume-writing skills and corporate research pointers but few of today’s job candidates have any guidance about conducting a successful business lunch/second interview. That’s when Rachel Seff – director of the University of Houston’s College of Business Career Center, Dr. Ron Adams, a veteran educator and Alice Adams, a former professor and current employment writer with The Houston Chronicle joined forces and developed 60 Minutes To Success: The Ultimate Guide to Power Lunching.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Stocking Stuffer for New Grads & Job Seekers!.......2000-11-29

Wow! I would have loved to have had a book like this when searching for my first job. The authors reviewed every possible lunch and dinner interview etiquette scenario and even included helpful tips from career services directors around the country. '60 Minutes to Success' is a must read for any job seeker, college student, MBA candidate or law school grad. I'm going to buy it for my granddaughter, Debbie, who will graduate from the University of Pennsylvania in May.

    Book Description

Debt capital markets and loans business has become truly global during the past few years. Many European and US issuers are visiting Asia's credit markets regularly to tap into what is one of the most important investor pools. The same holds true for non-Asian investors who are regularly approached by Asian issuers planning or conducting international road shows and non-Asian bankers who facilitate such investor relations' exercises, or simply want to understand the dynamics and mechanics of Asia's credit markets.

        Book Description

Based on interviews with key EPA decision makers and an analysis of the public record, this informative case study demonstrates how the contemporary movement for regulatory reform has actually affected the internal organizational politics of a highly visible administrative agency. The volume offers an in-depth look at how a specific agency effort at regulatory reform can be drastically influenced by the machinations of bureaucratic politics. Evidence is offered to support Cook's claim, in contrast to conventional views, that senior political and career leadership has considerable influence over the policy direction of an administrative agency.

              Book Description

With the sequencing of several entire genomes, including that of Caenorrhabditis elegans, completed, the stage is set for the next phase of "large-scale" biology, the identification of the functionality of, and the interplay between, all genes and their protein products. The aim of the ESRF Workshop 29 and hence of this book was to review the models, the powerful methodology, and selected achievements of developmental biology, which has in the past two decades not only unveiled basic molecular mechanisms of ontogenesis, but also made important contributions to deciphering signal transduction pathways with general relevance to adult vertebrate physiology and ultimately to understanding mechanisms of pathogenesis.

                Book Description

People throughout the ages have experienced—consciously or otherwise—the life-giving and healing forces of water. It is integral to life, surrounding us in nature as well as within our own bodies. Not all water, however, is the same. Water can carry beneficial energies or harmful energies. How can we understand water enough to know the difference?

Drop PicturesTheodor Schwenk, the renowned author of Sensitive Chaos, founded the Institute for Flow Sciences in the Black Forest of Germany. Schwenk developed the "drop picture" method, which photographically displays the characteristics of water for anyone to see and understand. Today, the institute continues his work and presents momentous discoveries about the quality of our drinking water, groundwater, spring water, and river water.

The authors of this stunningly illustrated book are scientists at the Institute for Flow Sciences. They offer a unique view into the world of water, helping us better understand one of the most essential elements of our earthly life.

                Book Description

Density functional theory (DFT) is by now a well-established method for tackling the quantum mechanics of many-body systems. Originally applied to compute properties of atoms and simple molecules, DFT has quickly become a work horse for more complex applications in the chemical and materials sciences. The present set of lectures, spanning the whole range from basic principles to relativistic and time-dependent extensions of the theory, is the ideal introduction for graduate students or nonspecialist researchers wishing to familiarize themselves with both the basic and most advanced techniques in this field.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly theory, few applications.......2005-01-04

Springer - Verlag has lately been publishing books related to materials simulation. One of their recent products is this short book on density functional theory, today's workhorse of atomic-scale solid-state simulations.

For someone who wants to know DFT, its origins, principles, and future, this is probably the best, and most condensed work currently out. There is minimal discussion of other techniques, and one chapter (the last) on implementing a DFT code. Everything is else is pure theory, but kept at an understandable level. The major publications in the field are cited and their importance to DFT's development are explained. The math is extensive, and the prospective reader should have taken at least one quantum course before reading this book.

Separate chapters are devoted to the three areas of DFT that are presently rarely seen in commercial codes: relativistic DFT, time-dependent DFT, and orbital-dependent functionals. This serves to show the reader probable advances in the field.

Unlike Martin's work on Electronic Structure, or Finnis' work on Interatomic Forces, this book concerns itself with DFT and its implementation, and not the use of DFT to obtain any properties. I would suggest buying this book as a complement to the two previously mentioned.

                  5 out of 5 stars very impressive.......2003-08-04

This is a very impressive scholarly work. Basically, it's an overview of, among other things, all remotely philosophical issues that tie in with animals. One regrettable thing is that it's not available in paperback. Hopefully it will eventually be issued in paperback so it's cheaper.

Professor Shanks is also Vice-President of Americans for Medical Advancement. AFMA promotes human wellness by exposing the lost opportunities for cures and the life-threatening results of animal-modeled biomedical research. They educate the public, showing how government and charities misspend medical research dollars and place us at grave risk.

Animal-modeled biomedical research yields results that cannot be safely applied to humans. It diverts research dollars that should be going to proven methods of curing human disease.

They disclose how industry introduces and keeps unhealthy and often deadly products in the marketplace through animal experiments.

Here is some information on the book:

Animals and Science examines the debates, from the Renaissance to the present, surrounding issues of animal rights, consciousness, and self-awareness.

Are animals self-aware, conscious beings worthy of our moral respect? Do they have rights? What are our obligations toward animals? Humans have grappled with these questions for five centuries. Our answers have revealed a great deal about animals, and even more about ourselves.

Animals and Science examines what science has (and has not) taught us about the nature of nonhuman animals and explores the moral, religious, social, and scientific implications of those teachings. It shows how the scientific study of animals, especially their cognitive abilities, has transformed our understanding of them. Animals and Science traces our evolving understanding of animal pain and considers its moral relevance to humans. It discusses Darwin's belief-shattering notion that species differences are not absolute, then traces its impact to the present day.

Ultimately, Animals and Science is about the nature of science-the kinds of questions science can and cannot answer, and the role of theory in shaping the interpretation of evidence.

                  Features
12 thought-provoking essays trace the evolution of our ideas about animals and their impact on science, medicine, and society
The book includes an extensive collection of primary source documents, ranging from Thomas Aquinas's Summa contra Gentiles to Peter Singer's Animal Liberation

                  Highlights
Explores the moral debate ignited by the scientific discovery that animals and humans experience pain the same way, and chronicles the resulting emergence of animal welfare groups
Details how comparative anatomy and vivisection in the 16th and 17th centuries revealed structural similarities between humans and animals

Niall Shanks is professor of philosophy and adjunct professor of biological sciences at East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN. He is the coauthor of Brute Science: The Dilemmas of Animal Experimentation.

This is such a terrific book and perfect for anyone with even a remote interest in women's history. I bought it to share with my 12-year-old daughter and the two of us have had a wonderful time reading it.

We were particularly excited about the Sports and Music selections. The choices were piquant and perceptive. The descriptions of the selections were particularly fascinating in their unique view of herodom in this age of popular consumer driven society. I would strongly recommend this book and its off-beat view of our world of American history to a generation unused to reading about our heros and role models from a realistic, while yet Zen, perspective. Kudos to the authors and particularly the fine editing staff!!!

This book is a bit of a disappointment. It is described on the front flap as 'magisterial' and the life's work of Jacques Roger, but ultimately it comes up short. After all, the one thing that Buffon is famous for is Buffon's Needle, the brilliant combination of ideas in differential geometry and probability, that initiated the whole area of what is now called geometric probability. Yet in Roger's biography it is barely mentioned: he gives it just one half page, and no analysis. Laplace, who corrected Buffon's calculation, is not mentioned at all in this context. Roger even seems unaware that Buffon's Needle is related to the experimental determination of the value of pi.

So, if you are interested in Buffon's mathematical ideas this is not the book for you. You won't find this book helpful if you are interested in physics, either. Or Newtonianism, for that matter. (Roger's opinions on the Newton-Leibniz controversy seem more informed by his anti-Englishness than any real understanding of who invented the calculus.) We really need a second book to cover these matters properly. What the book covers very well is Buffon the naturalist, and Buffon the anthropologist. Here Roger is in his element. The prose style of the book (or at least the translation) is occasionally choppy, but what is important is that one can see through it to something of the man and his work...or some of his work, at least.

                            Book Description

The world urgently needs a comprehensive system of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to conserve biodiversity and to help rebuild the productivity of the oceans. The aim of these Guidelines is to help countries establish systems of MPAs as a key component of integrated management of coastal and marine areas and as part of their sustainable development. The various actions to make an effective MPA are set out, from early planning stages to implementation.
